I was watching the game in Sappro in 1972. As far as I know, Janet is the best skater in the world even compared to the latest top skaters because her technical skill is second to none. Her sophisticated and irresistible performance is always makes me cry.

She and John Curry are the greatest skaters I’ve ever seen, They understand technique and musical interpretation like no other skaters I’ve seen before or since. UA-cam has Curry’s exhibit at the 76 Olympics where he won gold. He skates to “Scheherazade” and skates and interprets the music beautifully. Look at his face shortly before the performance ends. He is completely one with it.

Set up, the move, obvious recovery, quickly begin the next set up, repeat. They may be much harder moves now, but it is vastly less appealing, at least to my eyes.

Her coach, Slavka Kohout, is a genius for crafting this program. I think it's her and Janet's magnum opus. The choreography at 2:31 and onwards is especially intricate and ethereal.
The interesting thing about this video is that the audio is about 2-3 seconds behind the video almost the whole way through. But near the end, the audio speeds up and is perfectly synched when she hits the final pose.
She was behind Western skaters and Schuba was Austrian, not from a Soviet block country. What the heck are you talking about. Schuba won with strong compulsory figures according to the rules at the time.

She was so way ahead of others before the free skate that it was impossible to beat her. Those were the rules at that time so she won fair and square. Janet Lynn wasn't as strong in figures so even with a great free skate she didn't have a chance to win. You should accept it, and not cry like a baby that the American skater didn't win the gold medal.

It seems unfair by today's standards but those were the rules at the time. Any criticism levied against the system in an attempt to vindicate Janet's breathtaking free skate should not take away from the similarly impressive accomplishment of Ms. Schuba in compulsory figures.

She became a superstar there and inspired so many. In fact you can definitely see her influence in many Japanese figure skaters today as her qualities were instilled through various generations of coaching. That's why they have those soft knee bends and emphasis on blade work. Yuka Sato was probably the closest skater to emulate Lynn's style and her parents-coaches definitely instilled that in all of their skaters. Peggy Fleming even noticed how their skaters had such excellent knee bend and blade work while watching Arakawa and Suguri at 2001 Four Continents and admired it as that wasn't the most emphasized thing during that era outside of the top skaters. Also, the reigning Olympic bronze medalists, Maia & Alex Shibutani, are noted for their soft knees and ability to naturally and effortless ride the curves because their developmental coach early on was Lynn's coach.
She had a graceful style that we don’t see much of today. The top women skaters are concentrating on their most difficult jumps, and it interrupts the flow of their program. You see them lining up for their jumps. Lynn’s jumps were easier (fewer turns) but were integral to the flow of her program.
