Shine on is such a complicated song expressing complicated emotions about an ex-friend and co-worker, Syd. Glad you have the patience for Floyd. Other reactors start fidgeting during the long introductions and you listen patiently. I can believe you actually like the band. A couple of years ago I did a year of only listening to Pink Floyd. I never got tired of them.
DKS, I beat you. I remember when See Emily Play came out. 😃 So about 55 years. They truly never get old. I struggle a little on the albums since they broke up, but there's things to like there.
Snakelight. 55 years is a long time to be a fan but the music is so great that you can’t help it. I might stray and listen to other bands genres of music but I always come back to Pink Floyd. When I need to get away from the world.
Thank you very much. Shine on you crazy diamond is one of the most heartbreaking songs ever. And the opening solos just make me want to weep. Absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Anyone who has experienced loss heartbreak or longing knows it’s effectiveness.
This is probably the best reaction I've seen to this album. Kid did everything right: Listened to the whole album at once, had headphones, looked up the lyrics and meanings to the tracks, seemed to really 'get' the album.
By listening to it this way you're getting the concept. You're getting the whole reason why these albums should be listened to in order from beginning to end straight through! Each song leads into the next and that way you don't get that abrupt cutoff you do when you listen to bits and pieces of these albums. Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were here, Animals and The Wall were meant to be listened to straight through from beginning to end. You are getting it! One more thing, it's amazing to hear you say these sounds are so "futuristic" when they were done 40 to 50 years ago. That's how far ahead of their time they were & are! Can you imagine what we thought when these albums came out that long ago! These guys are the Mozart of our time once again I say it because I really believe people will be listening to this 500 years from now going "WOW" did you hear that new album by this group called Pink Floyd?
During the recording of this album, a person the band didn't recognize showed up at the studio. He was over weight, had a shaved head (including eyebrows), and was behaving oddly (he was brushing his teeth in the studio). The band was devastated when they realized it was Syd. Great reaction! Keep 'em coming!
I think the whole band had pangs of guilt about Syd that seeped into a few of their songs. They were still very young guys when Syd started to go off the rails, the tragedy of seeing a band mate disintegrate, and maybe not knowing how to handle it themselves, but they were still ambitious and wanted a career. They all still clearly admired what Syd had helped create on their first album and singles, and it shows in their tributes to him.
The gravy train is easy money. Syd Barrett had his mental breakdown in the late 60s years before they became the international Superstars they became. But he remained an influence on much of their music going forward. As much as this album is about Syd, it could be also about any of us. A cautionary tale.
Yeah, everyone always talks about Dark Side of Moon (which IS amazing in its own right) and The Wall.... but this album just has a certain je ne sais quoi that I can't put my finger on but love to death.

That statement "oh by the way which one is Pink" actually happened to the whole group of Pink Floyd from a record executive! It just goes to show how little they cared about the people in the group as opposed to the money!!! That is the point of the entire lyrics to "have a cigar"!!!

The machine is the music industry. It is also referred to in "Have A Cigar". This is something Syd picked up on pretty early and he wanted no part of it. It was his unwillingness to allow the band to be commercially successful and his increased drug use that brought Dave in to the band at the end of 1967 and by the spring of 1968 the band stopped picking syd up for gigs. Yep, the gravy train is the record execs getting rich riding on the backs of the musicians who put in all the hard work. At the end of Have A Cigar the sound gets sucked into a AM radio. A number of Syd's songs were mono including, "See Emily Play" the theme of which Rick Wright uses to close out the very end of this album. One last goodbye. Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in the cage. If there is one line in this album that encapsulates the album, "The Wall", this is it. The lead character, Pink, creates the lead roll in a cage rather than fighting life's daily struggles.

WYWH is my favourite Album. It has the best transitions of any PF Album. SOYCD vi-ix is my favourite song from this album. . The first half of it feels as though you are entering syds mind. And part 9 is Pink Floyd saying good bye.
The band left Syd. They were driving to a gig and decided just to not pick him up. They had already brought in Gilmour as Syd's behavior became more and more bizarre. I personally believe that losing Syd was the best thing that happened to them. They sound they ultimately developed didn't come from Syd. Syd's lyrics were more "daisy chains and laughs" as they say in DSOTM.
@ snakelite61 I agree that replacing Syd with David was crucial. Absolutely. But let's not forget that much of that playing in those early "pre" professional years is due to Syd. Those long and wild jams in concerts, which had "relatively" little to do with the lyrics and with the songs themselves "packaged" for release on 45 and 33 rpm, were the training ground in which individual attitudes developed and learned to blend. In that way, after, all those "shreds of genius" were born which, skilfully stitched up, formed the stratospheric Suites that will make Pink Floyd immortal. I think Syd himself understood that the "jokes were over on his script". m.ua-cam.com/video/jMOynjuAPvM/v-deo.html
Wow In a sort of way this is a analogy for personal growth Imma have to listen to the band when Syd was in it to make the comparison because I really like David Gilmour.
Interstellar Overdrive and Saucerful of Secrets were massively influential in the bands direction and growth. Sid helped them to break the three minute single format, big time. Dave Gilmour admitted that it was some time after Sid's departure that they felt they were finding their feet as a band.
Jony. No problem mispronouncing names or any word for that matter. We all do it. What's important is you discovering, reacting to and enjoying all this rock from the 60s on up. Watched your Beatles White Album review yesterday and your Sgt Pepper's recently, and enjoyed your reactions. You do nice work because you don't comment much or talk over the lyrics while it's playing.
I really butchered the name 😂 but you’re right at the end of the day the music matters more I just didn’t want to disrespect Syd by saying his name wrong. I appreciate you checking out the my videos and commenting 🙏🏾 thank you.
My interpretation of “The Machine” is coming out of school with little or nothing, and being thrust into life/society to become part of the rat-race. A cog in a huge machine that moves people through life, chews them up, gives them hope and dreams and then spits them out when they are of no more use.
(S)hine on (Y)ou Crazy (D)iamond Did you notice the cover art photo? It depicts a deal (handshake) and one guy gets "burned". This album is just a great work of art. Gilmour and Waters get all the props, but Richard Wright's work on the keyboards on this album is under-appreciated.
Trivia: The last notes played by Richard Wright on Shine On Part IX are the main notes from See Emily Play, the very first song they recorded as a group - written by Syd. The ultimate tribute.... My favorite Pink Floyd album because of how emotional it is, and for each member of the group. They share all their feelings with us in their individual emotions and memories of Syd that come together in harmonious tribute. David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright have all publicly stated it is their favorite album. Trivia Part 2: since you loved Animals, the songs that became Dogs and Sheep were supposed to be on Wish You Were Here, under their original titles: Gotta Be Crazy (Dogs) and Raving And Drooling (Sheep), but Roger Waters fought with Gilmour to leave them off because they didn't fit the tone of the album. One of the battles I am so happy Waters won... Thanks again for letting us share your first listen.
My favorite thing about this album is if you listen closely at the very end you hear notes from an early Pink Floyd song called See Emily Play, which is another reference to Syd since he wrote it
I LOVE to see people especially young people listen to Pink Floyd for the first time. Its a musical journey and it feels like your listening skills have been blessed.
This is probably the deepest, most socially conscious band I know of, and the fullness of their sound is crucial to the message. One of the incredible things about Pink Floyd is that, even when there's silence, there's never emptiness.
The album is both a critique of the music industry at the time and a lament for their former bandmate Syd. Astonishingly, he actually turned up out of the blue at the studio while they were recording this back in 1975. They hadn't seen him since about 1968. BTW, it's guest vocalist Roy Harper on Have a Cigar.
The line When the band your in starts playing different tunes during Brain Damage refers to Syd Barrett because when he was going crazy he would come on stage with the rest of the band and would be playing a different song then everyone else.
Loved it brother. This album hits hard af. Truly sad but blessed to hear the influence of Syd. His impact on the music/art scene is much larger than we know.
And, especially thank you for listening to the entire album - and your other videos (although different sides) - and not breaking it up into separate videos, as other reaction video watchers do. It was meant to be listened as one piece. Bravo to you, young man!
Funny cause it always fits, Bob Seger also did it well. If you really like sax and guitar riffs watch the movie Eddie and the Cruisers 2, it features both with a pretty good story also. Wish you were here is nmy fav. song of all time and my fav. album also, my 1st Pink Floyd album was called A Nice Pair which was a combination of their 1st 2 albums A Piper at the gates of dawn and A Saucer Full of Secrets, I guess I bought it about 1971 but it had been out for a few years by then.
This is a no judgement zone!! Just happy to watch you react to music that has been the soundtrack of my life for the last 50 years!! Welcome to the machine known as Pink Floyd!
Not all. Just Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar. The rest is about Barrett. Although within the lyrics of Shine on You Crazy Diamond there is a hint of Syd Barrett’s dislike of record companies who wouldn’t let a band let their creativity show - they just wanna throw out singles
@@michaelsuder3956 Yes, they're about the music industry. They criticise the industry's greed and exploitation of artists. Artist is nothing more than a money making machine, nothing special. There is no artistic integrity, only products. If you look at the album's artwork, there is a photo of a faceless man in the suit handing over a WYWH vinil. The absence of the artist.
Your reactions to Pink Floyd are so amazingly perceptive bearing in mind your age and your first listening. Most kids your age would not have your patience or depth of thought to analyse the deeper meaning of the music. Every time you listen to Pink Floyd you will understand a little more, it's like doing a jigsaw, every piece contributes to the whole. Keep it up son, enjoy the journey!! 😁😁🇬🇧
Roberta Kline yea seriously I learned in a philosophy class that there’s a philosopher who said people don’t really have free will because everything we do is shaped by our society us having to work and go to school this and that. Would we really be the same ppl if we weren’t raised in the society we grew up in? I’m not really explaining it that well😅 but I hope u get the point.
Bruh you got it. 100%. And “Scouting for boys” was a tv show in England back in the day. So Syd was “provided with toys and scouting for boys” in that he was given whatever he wanted to just sit and keep making shit. Look up the story of how Syd actually showed up at the studio while they were recording Shine. It’s crazy. Keep it up! Love seeing you watch and listen deeply. ❤️
Before moving on to the next album, this might be a good time to check out some live Floyd. Check out 'Wish You Were Here' live Pulse. Choose *restored version* just recently released.
He could also watch "The delicate sound of thunder " which is my favorite. I also was a teenager back in the 70s, l'm an old fart now and still listen to them, always will!
Gotta jump back about 4 years and listen to Pink Floyd Meddle before moving forward to The Wall. When you listen to the wall do it via the movie The Wall. Gives you visual to go along with the music. Never mind about Meddle I see you did that about a month after this video....lol. If I remember correctly Pink Floyd has a total of 14 albums over their career. New subscriber here, love seeing you reacting to the entire albums and not just a song.
I just wanna say, I never heard these albums before... and I am going on this journey with you too. I am starting to really love Pink Floyd because of you.
This whole album is pretty much in honor of Syd. The part about "trading a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage" .. . to me is a reference to people who burned their draft cards during the Vietnam War and were sent to jail.
I think that line is more about enjoying trhe process of becoming famous before recognition, hence walk on part in a war, then after being famous never having any privacy yet having all the trappings of fame hence a lead roll in a cage. It also how I felt after getting out of the Navy after 10 years, and reassociating back into civilian society.
Thanks for letting me spend this qualitytime with you, it was just very nice! Like me at the time you were searching for clues and were starting to dig it. Nice job, bro!
I can't express how much I like this album. It is strange and still it is wonderful (others are brilliant but this one is special). Thanks for reaction! It's nice to hear it with someone who appreciates the music like this^)
Thanks again And, BTW, the quality of your videos is fantastic. I can thoroughly enjoy the sound. At some other people's videos it sounds like on the phone or half of the instruments is missing., which really puts me off.

The machine is the music biz. Scouting for Boys is the boy scouts manual :D, that was better known in those days. A record executive did ask which one's Pink, showing how little they really knew about the band. Roy Harper sang on the album but he was just a guest.
Hey man, very nice reaction, if I do my math right..The Wall is next, it's long. 26 total tracks. Or you can go the other way now and jump back to the beginnings, Pink Floyds first album "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn". No David Gilmour. Syd Barrett the Lead singer/guitarist/lyricist. Not sure you are ready, but it is very very different. Enjoying the journey, whatever you do, I'll be watching.
I am enjoying your trip down the rabbit hole of Pink Floyd. Fear not, there is plenty of Floyd left and there are many gems in the pre-Dark Side of the Moon era. Wish You Were Here (1975) is a concept album about Floyd's experience with the music industry, music executives and the impact fame has on the mental health of individuals caught up in the music 'machine'. There is an obvious connection here with founding member Syd Barrett who succumbed to the pressure of the business and took psychedelic drugs to cope, causing mental health issues and Barrett to leave the band. Shine On You Crazy Diamond was originally written as a single piece of music in 1973 and performed live as part of a set of new material during the 1973/74 Dark Side of the Moon tours where it was refined and improved. Wish You Were Here originally meant to be just this song, however in 1975 they split the nine-part song in two and developed three new songs to insert between them. Syd Barrett was one of the founding members of Pink Floyd. He was the guitarist and lead songwriter for the band. He wrote most of the material on their 1967 debut album The Piper At The Gates of Dawn. As the frontman for Pink Floyd, he was courted by the music executives who saw him as a paycheck. Syd was a free-sprit and become quickly uncomfortable with their attention and the constraints of the music industry. He soon took to taking Acid (LSD) to cope. There are legendary stories of Barrett as he began his mental decline. He turned up to one performance with no strings on his guitar and pretended to play. At a recording of Top of the Pops, a TV music show, he refused to mime over the pre-recorded song. The other band members soon become frustrated with him. They asked Barrett's friend, David Gilmour to join the band as the guitarist so that Syd could just write songs and sing. At a practice session, Barrett introduced a new song called Have You Got It Yet. Every time he played the song it would be different so other band members never got it. The five-piece Floyd lineup only lasted weeks, as halfway through recording their second album, A Saucerful Of Secrets (1968), the band members decided not to pick up Syd on the way to perform in concert. It is true to say that Pink Floyd would not have started without Syd Barrett, but would not have been the band they became with Syd. After Syd left the group, it took a while for Pink Floyd to refine their sound. Syd was only with the band for the first two years or so and only produced material for 1.5 albums, but his impact was massive. After he 'left' the band, the group did not see him again until, coincidently, he turned up at the recording studio when Floyd was recording Wish You Were Here. He was described as a being overweight and lived on pork chops. The band members didn't recognise him at first and were distressed when they did. Barrett lived his life as a recluse, an artist (painter), and didn't speak about Floyd. He died in 2006.

This is my favorite album by anyone. I have a lot of memories of this album, none of them worth writing down. The one that stands out right now is listening to this in a bar with a guy who had obviously never heard it before, spent twenty minutes telling me how it related to rnb, and became...well, upset when it ended after the first half of shine on.
Very perceptive jony. I love your analysis of Floyd music. Roy Harper is a songwriter in his own right, a favourite of mine. David nor Roger could sing 'Welcome...' Roy happened to be in the next studio, David asked him to have a go much to Rogers anger (still)..... Syd Barrett and Roger were school-friends and founder members of the band, he named them Pink Floyd, when they were into more psychedelic sound. Their earlier songs are brilliant too, mostly written by Syd. Alas, he couldn't handle the attention, really sad story. Check him out, a fascinating guy, painter, poet, musician. there are plenty of references to Syd in their songs. Check out 'The Piper at The Gates of Dawn' 'A Saucer Full of Secrets' be prepared! I'm happy to say I caught PF many times in the 70's. TDSOTM Album tour 1972. 10/10 The Wall' 10/10. Sadly never got to see Syd. Shine on you crazy diamond. R.I.P. I'll leave it there. Wish You Were Here is such a beautiful song. Other than the bookend songs on Animals, I don't think they do any other solely acoustic songs. I think it's about what we now call "frenemies". They care for each other but can't get along when they get together, and that cycle keeps repeating itself.

In that way, after, all those "shreds of genius" were born which, skilfully stitched up, formed the stratospheric Suites that will make Pink Floyd immortal.
I think Syd himself understood that the "jokes were over on his script".

@@larryfrootsaucerful of secrets was written by waters, mason, wright and gilmour
@@larryfrootunless you're talking about the album then yeah he wrote one song
Your insight serves you well. You are listening to Floyd the right way: with your ears, your heart, and your mind.

Did you notice the cover art photo?
Hey I love how you analyze this music and really try to understand the words meaning
The line When the band your in starts playing different tunes during Brain Damage refers to Syd Barrett because when he was going crazy he would come on stage with the rest of the band and would be playing a different song then everyone else.

Check out the Pink Floyd Live Pulse Concert 1994
Loved it brother. This album hits hard af.
Truly sad but blessed to hear the influence of Syd. His impact on the music/art scene is much larger than we know.
Definately my fav Pink Floyd album. So glad another young bloke has now had the chance to listen to greatness.
Pink Floyd stands apart in my musical preferences. I can't stop listening to it over and over again.
There is "Music" and there is "Pink Floyd".
Keep up the Floyd great content
This is my favorite album of all time ...
And, especially thank you for listening to the entire album - and your other videos (although different sides) - and not breaking it up into separate videos, as other reaction video watchers do. It was meant to be listened as one piece.
Bravo to you, young man!
Pink Floyd is one of those rare bands that can get away with using saxophone in rock.
Goes from generation to the next generation. My dad listened this record in the '70s as a kid and learned listen it too. Now over 50.😃
This is a no judgement zone!! Just happy to watch you react to music that has been the soundtrack of my life for the last 50 years!! Welcome to the machine known as Pink Floyd!
Love your Pink Floyd reactions,. Every album is my favourite!
The whole album is about syd in a way and how currupt the music industry has become
T Nig And specifically how the music industry affected Syd.
The whole album is about absence, not Syd. Just SoYcD is about Syd
@@duje8739 Have A Cigar and Welcome to the Machine aren’t about absence
😁😁🇬🇧
The best part of this album starts at 34:20.
Be sure to turn the volume up!
You have to do the final cut full album it's never mentioned but it's amazing
You are really getting the point. This same philosophy can be applied to any of us. Are we all not just part of the machine?
Roberta Kline yea seriously I learned in a philosophy class that there’s a philosopher who said people don’t really have free will because everything we do is shaped by our society us having to work and go to school this and that. Would we really be the same ppl if we weren’t raised in the society we grew up in? I’m not really explaining it that well😅 but I hope u get the point.
Great job
Been watching your reactions to the albums. Great to see how you are quick to get the subtext and meaning of the words.
I subscribed, I am enjoying your Pink Floyd journey so much. Thanks for taking us along.
Wonderful to see you connecting to music made 40+ years ago...and get it. Amazing.
Great reaction and video brother. Love the Floyd reactions! Much appreciated!
masters of sound and sounds
This whole album is pretty much in honor of Syd. The part about "trading a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage" .. . to me is a reference to people who burned their draft cards during the Vietnam War and were sent to jail.
that's not it at all
Doubtful, as UK didn't participate in that particular war.
Welcome To The Machine as well as Have a Cigar are knocking the machine like quality of the music industry
It's nice to hear it with someone who appreciates the music like this^)
You're a great person. Love your reactions. Aloha from The Big Island. ✌❤
Thanks again And, BTW, the quality of your videos is fantastic. I can thoroughly enjoy the sound. At some other people's videos it sounds like on the phone or half of the instruments is missing., which really puts me off.
Nick's drums sounds so good on this album
And here's where you got my sub, man... Welcome to the strange, my friend. 😎
Just ran across yr channel. Appreciate yr playing the whole album. Appreciate yr reaction 2. My age 64, happy U enjoy Pink Floyd. Looking forward 2 yr content. Big fan of hip hop/rap, will U do some of those ? Am now a subscriber, tks
Nobody judging son, just glad you are listening to pink floyd.share with your friends, expand some minds
Come in here dear boy... Have a Cigar ... Yeah man, You got the groove... I can see it in your face my brother...
Beautiful Roger (Syd) Barrett... it’s okay, cause I know you are loving the music ♥️💎♥️
I see these 14 time live I just love it
Love Pink Floyd... for many years, never saw them live.. but a few years ago I saw Waters live...I' m a huge Rush fan. You should check them out.
The Wall is my favorite album
No worries; we know who you mean. Great reaction!
this album is perfect, bro ,I loved reaction and Pink Floyd.
It's not for everyone but try Atom Heart Mother.
Nice analysis dude. ... ... Yeah nice.
Hey Jony, Awesome well thought review. You are going to enjoy pulling apart The Wall
NopRob4Rob just listened to it today I got to watch the movie after listening to the album
@@fiendjony778 awesome. It's quite dark but life isn't always rainbows and chocolate cake. I think you will return to these albums from time to time; it will be interesting who among your family and friends will learn to enjoy it too 🙂
Oh and you have to check out their debut, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Syd's character and playing is all over it. It's a bit different and weird but really helps you understand everything
Much love to you!
ha,,,im at 35:13,,and was just thinking outloud,,,"oh yeah dude, you be lovin on the horns,,,buckle the fuck up dude, cant wate to un pause and watch to see if you react like i expect you will,,,lol,,,,im enjoying this
Hello again you are knew to Pink Floyd so I hope you have like 2 or 3 years to catch up you won’t be disappointed have fun and enjoy 😉
Hey man. Great stuff throughout their vast catalogue. Start with The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Then you'll see what Syd Barrett was about. Genius
Enjoying very much you youngster listening, analyzing en appreciating Pink Floyd the way I did 50 years ago. I reckon it settled somewhere in your mind and you'll enjoy it also the rest of your life, because it will never ever bore you.
Keep on discovering!
Have you reacted to Tool...Fear Inoculum? Another great song
Like your reacton togood music
My man, fantastic!!
the 'machine" is in reference to the music industry of the time
Very perceptive jony.
A new subscriber. Peace brother.
Great reaction man. My favourite album of theirs and you have a great interpretation of it. Lots of boring paperwork to do at work today so stuck this on and just chilled with you. Helps me get through it all.
the first time I heard this I was about 18 and it was just out..I was listening to a radio station that played new albums during the middle of the night..i was still high from earlier and this album really defined music at the time...
I'm new, you just showed up on my UA-cam, so I love reactors. Xoxo's
3:05 this man know how to listen to Floyd fr
Love Pink Floyd's bluesy sound.
Fuck yes... My brother... You got it...The instrumental at Shine On... You felt it!! As I did...My brother...
Wish You Were Here is such a beautiful song. Other than the bookend songs on Animals, I don't think they do any other solely acoustic songs. I think it's about what we now call "frenemies". They care for each other but can't get along when they get together, and that cycle keeps repeating itself.
It's 3am right now, i remember when i had the "Time" cherish it brother
Oh, and Darkside of the Moon is my fav too!
