Exam is now totally waived for research category as MEXT decided that Philippines is English speaking country. We did took the exam for japanese though but they said it has no bearing. In my experience my interview went smooth, they did not ask much on my research just some clarifications on definition of terms. Most of the time it was story telling. What struck me was the last question they ask, "Unfortunately we cannot accept all of you as we have limited slots, WHAT makes you more qualified than the other applicants to receive the scholarship?" Fortunately I have big edge vs other applicants being topnotcher and being a member of NRCP (national research council of the Philippines) with the panels happen to be members of also. To aspiring mext scholars goodluck! see you all in Japan
Hello, regrading 9:27 i have 15 years of education because Bachelor's education in the country i studied is done in 3 years. I explained that in my application as well. I hope I'd be able to qualify for the entrance exams for masters degree.

Thank you for this. This is so far the clearest video I've watched regarding MEXT scholarship for Filipino aspirants. By the way, you must be really intelligent to have finished law school, two master's degrees and now on your way to completing PhD. 👏👏👏
Thanks for this helpful video! Do you know the passing mark for the english exam? Also for the personal photo in the application form, what color should the background of the photo be? And do we need to attach 3 photos for 3 application copies or just 1 is enough?
Hi! Thank you for the kind words!😊 Unfortunately, I’m not certain what the passing mark for the English exam is. As for the photo, I used the usual white background to be consistent with the usual visa photo requirements. Attach photos to all copies of the application form :) Hope this helps and good luck!
So in the placement preference we can put the universities and courses that we want to attend without contacting any supervisor, they'll accept the document even if I put the name of the sueprvisors without contacting them until I pass the first round ?
thank you for this video. please could you explain how can I get provisional acceptance from university. do I have to send my document via post to get the acceptance
Hi! I hope this doesn’t come too late. The LOPA (letter of provisional acceptance) is something you secure after passing the first screening. Your local mission will give you the go-signal and let you know the deadline for this request, which is a date that MEXT sets and is quite strict about). The exact procedure for securing a LOPA will depend on the university and graduate school you intend to secure it from, so aside from instructions from the local mission, be sure to read through the instructions of the university on how embassy-recommended scholars are supposed to get in touch for the LOPA. They will usually have specific landing pages on their websites for this. Hope this helps!
Hi I completed my degree in 2019. Currently working for the past 1 years. So can I apply for master this year 2024 and also try again next year 2025. Also is the any study gap limit of 6 years for masters.
Hi! Hmmm... I don't remember encountering any provision that limits applications to those who graduated within a certain number of years. I personally completed my master's degrees 7 and 4 years (respectively) prior to my application, and it was not an issue. Hope this helps!
hi i am just very confused , for applying masters program , do i need to send the documents via post before 15th may or just send the prelim form and THEN wait for getting selected ???
Hi! I just want to ask about the MEXT scholarship since I want to apply for the next application period. When filling up the application form did you took some JLPT (under Japanese Language Qualifications) and TOEFL (under English Language qualification)? Since I think you need to fill this up with your scores I think? Thank you for answering.
Hi! Since I've never taken a JPLT, I left that blank. I had an old IELTS (from 2015) that I opted to put in the Others box instead of the English qualification (which I left blank) due to the two-year validity of the results. Hope this helps!

hi :) i have one question! when i'm preparing my documents will i need to also write a research proposal or will the "research plan" document be enough for the primary selection/first screening?
Hi! For the embassy recommendation pathway, your research plan is essentially your proposal ☺️ so the research plan will suffice. (the format once you apply for the MS/MA/PhD program with the University down the line may change, however, depending on what will be required of you by the Uni, but at least for the embassy, the two are the same ☺️) Hope this helps!
Heyyoo Tysm for making this video. I am planning to apply this year and I’m very confused about the language section. They said you didn’t need to know Japanese to apply but as I was scrolling through past examinations for research students I noticed they evaluated English AND Japanese. So my question is wether the Japanese evaluation is for people that already knew Japanese prior to this or for everybody? And can my high school principal write my rec letter? I hope you see this and reply to me!
I'm also planning to apply for the MEXT scholarship. It is for everyone regardless of japanese proficiency. From my knowledge, Japanese Is tested so they know how much you know the language since you will be placed in a japanese language learning class
Hi! Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with how the university nomination-track works exactly, but for the embassy recommendation, what happens is that you are to secure a Letter of Provisional Acceptance (LOPA) from two graduate schools after the first screening (prompt and instructions given by your local mission). This is an official MEXT document issued by the universities. These LOPAs are attached to the Placement preference application form (Document no. 2), and the local mission sends everything to MEXT in Tokyo, which then decides the final placement. I have read of cases where applicants were unable to secure at least 1 LOPA; from what I understand, MEXT will still exert its best efforts to place the applicant in a university based on their Placement preference (Document no. 2). I don't personally know anyone who experienced this, so uncertain about details on this front. Hope this helps!

Actually very soon I'm going to enter the college life say just in 2-3 months for my undergraduate degree as I have given my 12th boards recently. But still there i a great yearning in myself to go and even for a semester or two study in Japan, it's a dream actually! But I'm confused that will i be able to apply for this scholarship even if I'm in my 1st or 2nd yr of college to pursue my undergraduate degree there even it's for a short term. Is that possible?

Hello, need help lang po. I was planning to apply for MEXT 2025 and I'm now in my 12th grade this upcoming school year. I recently found out that the deadline is May 27 and it's already June 9. Is it fine to still apply next year and pursue my undergraduate degree there right away or am I suppose to take a gap year?
Hi, I had same situation last year, after deadline I'd found up about MEXT, and no you cannot apply after deadline. Honestly, Id recommend you to take gap year (if you really wanna study in Japan) and prepare yourself for written exam. Also, you can start learning Japanese along with preparation for written exam (for me it's really hard>_
Hi! There are two layers to this issue - technically, a MEXT research scholar can get a part-time job for as long as they get this specific permission stamped on their Zairyu or Residence Card (the card itself is issued by immigration upon arrival). They will have to seek this permission from immigration either at the airport upon arrival (the form for this is available online) or at an immigration office later on. However, there are some universities/graduate schools that specifically disallow MEXT research scholars from taking on a part-time job. Just something to consider/keep in mind in case relevant 🙂
