Just got denied by the NYC embassy for the first round of acceptances for MEXT after working on the research proposal for a month, gonna try again next year, but this scholarship is no walk in the park. It is extremely competitive, so keep that in mind for everyone applying!
Congrats on getting the application in though. As you said, it is no small feat. I hope you're not too discouraged. I'm curious if there are any common pitfalls that may come up in the comments of this video over the next few days.

Years ago I watched your video about applying for the MEXT, and last year I graduated with my masters as a MEXT scholar. I really appreciated your video as one of the few informational videos out there about the MEXT and I'm sure lots of people will find this video insanely helpful as well! I agreed with a lot of your points. As for my experience, I would put extra emphasis on being prepared the entrance exam for grad students. My MEXT friends and I had no idea beforehand that an entrance exam was required, and let me tell you these exams were brutal for my school (U of Toyko). Many of us ended up failing at least once (even math and engineering friends). In my case, I failed the first year and had to wait a whole year to take it again. Mind you I had passed N1 the summer before I took the test (in December), so the level required to pass was literally a step above N1. At the time, I was depressed, but by the end of the masters I was so grateful I failed. As you said classes were intense and writing a decent master's thesis wouldn't have been possible if not for the grueling entrance exam and classes. Good luck to all who are applying now or in the future! I feel blessed to have had the opportunity despite the difficulties I experienced! @@ELEETIST Hi! That's a hard question because tbh it depends on the region/ country you're applying from. Some are much more competitive than others. For my region, it actually wasn't that competitive. Hi I'm doing the specialized training part and I'm going to take the test soon but what do you recommend to get ready for the interview stage and any other things I should know now.
This is great! Thank you so much! I’m currently in my last 2 years before graduating on MEXT and am at a TOTAL loss for how to go about job hunting. I can’t do it like the Japanese students, nor do I possess any of their cultural knowledge about it, and the career support is all in Japanese, which isn’t helpful at all. I know it seems you’re going to focus on the application stuff more, but I would really appreciate a video in more detail on that period of exit for you - your last year or so reaching out to companies, internships, how well you transitioned after graduation, how you found companies to reach out to. All of it. I feel really lost and this one video was like a small beacon of light for me. So thank you again.
Thank you so much for this, Loretta! Your videos about the MEXT process are always so accurate and insightful. I’m currently a MEXT graduate student and throughout the whole process of my applications, I had your videos on repeat! You’re also right that it’s difficult to find a job but still more achievable now than it was in the past. I’ll start my own job here in Japan after graduation in 8 months, watching your videos gives me hope that a life and future here is possible. Looking forward to all of your videos and future updates! Wishing you and your beautiful family all the best!
Do you have any social media channels where you talk about your MEXT experience? I’m really looking for someone to learn from for the job hunting process here. I’ll graduate from MEXT in less than 2 years and could really use some advice
I'm not applying for a MEXT scholarship but this video is just a treasure trove for those wanting to work in Japan (and probably go to school at the same time). Thank you.
The point @12:47 is a big one. I made this mistake when I first went to live abroad and it has essentially taken me 4 years to rebuild back to where I was before. Just because you have a new life, it doesn't mean you can or should abandon your old life
I was the only MEXT scholarship applicant that made it to interview rounds over 7 years ago. The reason I didnt make it past interview and "failed" was they pulled professors of Japanese descent from surrounding Universities in Houston and ALL their questions stemmed of why I want to leave the US, the US has a better higher education system, do I hate America....blah blah blah. I left the interview biting my cheek and ran to the restroom to cry. I wanted so badly to say back, why did you or your parents leave Japan for America? It was almost as they were mad that I hated America which I DONT! I just wanted to study another culture and language since America IS a melting pot....never tried again as I felt humiliated
Hello, I began watching your video 2 years ago ( very interesting and entertaining). Thankfully, I got accepted in MEXT this year on my 2nd try🎉.. See you in Japan inshallah and keep up the good work dear❤
Thank you! I love your channel soo much and your videos are always extremely helpful. I'm 22 and want to do a Masters in Japan in a few years and thanks to you I don't feel lost.
Thanks Loretta for the new MEXT video! Your MEXT videos helped me so, SO much years ago and I'm now close to graduating from my master's at todai :) You dropped some very nice info here too especially about job hunting/外資系 here as well which I hope people will be able to pick up on~ I don't know if you've covered this in a different video, but I think I've definitely received a certain level of antagonism from some locals regarding being a government-funded scholar (the whole using their tax dollars thing) which I have struggled a bit to grapple with. I find it hard to identify if it's from a xenophobic sort of place, but it's interesting since in the US I would never hear anyone talk poorly of Fulbright scholars from other countries, for example. I could also go on a rant about how MEXT has not made any amendments to the stipend amount to account for inflation and how the COL adjustment by location is a bit insulting for those who have to contend with the COL in Tokyo lol. But anyways it could be an interesting future video topic!
You're truly a fountain of knowledge! I've said it a million times, but you're such an inspiration!! Thanks so much for making moves and helping people along with you!! ❤🐦
I regret not trying to get MEXT when I had the chance (MEXT cuts off at 35). I kind of didn't want to do a Master's program. Now at the edge of 40, I would go to school for sure in Japan, but there isn't a direct scholarship offering.
合意どおりに納品しました。 : ) I remember watching your MEXT videos as a teenager about 5-6 years go. I had frantically expressed the feeling of missing my ship to sail to Japan for many academic reasons and you'd made a comment encouraging me to keep looking for opportunities. Though I'm very much just starting my full-time language learning journey, I am proud to update that as of next Winter I will have my first work visa arranged to work in Japan. I've kept up with all of the updates on this channel and I'm so proud of the life you and Boomer have been able to create in Japan. Congrats on the news! 🎉 I hope that someone can take advantage of this MEXT scholarship the way I wish I could all of those years ago!
Bitter sweet memories. I tried 5 times when I was in my 20s. It never happened for me. Now as an adult I can say I'm glad it was that way. I'm grateful for my life and my family. Had I gone to Japan I would've never met my wife.
Thank you for this video! I've been following your channel for a couple of years, and I remember being really impressed by your Japanese ability and you doing your master's degree in Japan, in Japanese, and alongside Japanese students. When this video popped up on my feed today, it felt very meaningful to me, as after all those years I am now doing a master's degree in Chinese in Taiwan. Your videos inspired me and I know they inspire others:)
I just found your videos a couple of days ago and I am so grateful for sharing all this information. I am a student from Latin America and managed to pass Embassy First Screening and already got my Letters of Provisional Acceptance and curenltly waiting for Second Screening results early next year. Your videos are helping me more understand the cost of living in Japan. I hope to see more of you soon!
I had watched you MEXt videos before I applied to MEXT prior to the pandemic for the research student portion, my friend helped me draft everything, for months on end, preparing. Got everything in. Waited. Got denied. The pandemic hit and they cancelled it completely for that year. Tried again, got denied again. Tried to even just go to a language school, and jumping through the amount of hoops they have was so impossible that I just coughed it up to it's not meant for me. I tried my hardest, but sometimes rejection is a redirection, and eventually I ended up not even wanting to do school anymore because I made a living for myself by my own means here. Honestly, I'm pretty happy it didn't work out. I have a much better life than what I could have imagined back then. My cousin is a video game developer in Japan so I can go and crash on his couch when I want lol, but I definitely do not see myself living or moving to Japan. My dad is kind of mad about it because he wanted something to brag about since it's his nephew that lives there. -_- But like, I created my own business, I have time freedom & location freedom, I'm working towards financial freedom. And I'm now 31, and honestly in the portion of my life where I'm thinking about marriage and children. Things changed! Especially when I met someone. I've always known I wanted kids and marriage, it just came down to meeting the right person to be with. I didn't want just anyone. I was single for over 4 years before meeting the right person. My dad will get over it, it's my life anyway.
Update: I have passed my exams and they have invited me to the interview... I get to show them who I really am that no matter what, until I become a Mangaka Artist living in Japan who will speak japanese..there's no way I'm giving up.

I literally just got an email from MEXT this morning that bears a bad news; my application has been rejected based on the written examination that I did last month. (I applied for MEXT for undergraduate.) Boy am I devastated right now. Though it was not a total surprise that I didn't pass the exam..because the Math exam was SO HARD. I chose the Social Science course which features English, Math A and Japanese exams.. I did studied (+answering some past mext math A papers) before attending the examination because it was important for me to do so as the last time I ever studied math was in high school. I went and get my diploma after high school at a College and there were zero Math classes (English Communication Diploma. Similar to Sociology). I am still young enough to apply for the MEXT application again and I may do so..but man the Math exam was so difficult for me.
I considered applying for the MEXT scholarship as a graduate, since I got denied from the JET program, yet still want to go to Japan. I definitely want to do research in the field of Japanese linguistics and issues in the realm of teaching Japanese, but unforunately as a single parent it's incredibly difficult to not feel held back or feel like things are out of reach. My son is now 10 yeas old and I landed a full time job after graduating with my BA this Spring so things are okay and I think I may apply still, but a lot to think about T^T"
Aha, that tip about the timeliness and urgency of the research topic for MEXT was probably why I didn't make it past the consulate round on my application. I totally just did a topic I thought I could tolerate going to grad school to study😆 But going through the application process prepared me for all the planning it takes to move abroad. And now I'll be going for a year just to study at a language school--no grad school required. Gonna make sure I get in on some networking early! Thanks for your super clear, concise, and informative video!
If you are considering MEXT scholarship, you should also consider Chinese CSC scholarship, it is much easier to get. And if you are a graduate already, you can also study in English. But of course, if you prefer Japan over China, then good luck with your MEXT application! 🙂
Oh wow this video came out at just the right time! I'm trying to go to school in Japan. Or rather, I'm trying to find a way to live and work in Japan for an extended period of time. I'm If I don't have to go back to school, I would prefer not to, but if that's the best way for me to move out there, then so be it. I'm actually a software developer, so I am skilled. I just have to either find a job at a Japanese company, or apply to school.
If you don’t care to be a student again and you’re a native English speaker, you can pretty easily come over via JET! I had applied when I was maybe about 23 and they accepted me, but the same year I got accepted into MEXT so I turned them down. Then if you don’t really want to teach English, you can look for a job related to your software stuff the first year while you work and then transition out asap 😎
Thank you so much. So enlightening. I remember watching your clips last year while applying for MEXT. Interestingly, I am presently a research student at YNU, where you graduated from. More vids please
I'd love it if can do a follow-up video for this in the future! I'm thinking of applying for the MEXT scholarship next year and I'm sure more tips from you could be really helpful 😊
One thing that fascinates me about Japan is that it's fairly common that hospitals will NOT offer anesthesia to young mothers giving birth for the first time. I am still puzzled as to whether it's a cultural thing or an economic scarcity sort of thing. It sounds like there is a belief, I am not sure where it comes from, that first time mothers should give birth naturally. But I am not sure that makes any sense.
I got accepted for the scholarship and didn't see the email that i got accepted for the competition until the day they were already passing it, the biggest regret of my life
Much appreciated it. Can definitely relate to the uni websites looking like scams. Same thing when applying for Taiwan universities. I swear they could hire me, a person with zero website skills, and I can still make a better website 😂
I'm glad you're doing well, and thanks for secret list of schools. I just noticed the school I'm graduating from now and the school I'll be joining for my PhD in Japan are on the list. That's pretty lucky! Does have more than one give extra points for the visa?
Could you please link the Math Exam video for my daughter she is an engineering major and math minor and will be taking the N-1 in December. She wanted to take the N-1 while we are in Japan right now, but has no time. It seems since the pandemic a few things have changed. Thank you
Should a person do good, let him do it again and again. Let him find pleasure therein, for blissful is the accumulation of good. The liar goes to the state of woe; also he who, having done (wrong), says, "I did not do it." Men of base actions both, on departing they share the same destiny in the other world.
Hello, can people who have gone through the MEXT program get in touch with me? I'm finishing school next year and I want to apply for the program, but there is very little information about the MEXT program, and I have many questions. I'm from Ukraine, and when I finish school, I will be 17 years old, so I'm not sure if I can apply for the program since I won't be 18 yet.
Thank you for this video! Do you know an approximate time span for which we have to work full-time to get those points for an HSP visa? And yep, please do post a video on research proposal if you can!
Greetings Dear, My name is Christiana from Liberia. I’m a current MEXT applicant. Your UA-cams videos on the programs have been really helpful. Thank you However, can you talk more about the University qualifying entrance exam to achieve regular Masters student status. I applied for a program in Geoscience and have passed the first screening. I am nervous about the entrance aspect and want to be prepared. Thank you
im considering going to med school in my country after that moving to japan as a doctor. to do that i need atleast N1 and japanese medicine knowledge what do you think about that
Is it possible to get a 2-year student visa for a normal Japanese language class, perhaps private not associated with a University. I am older and just want to learn Japanese. I have enough saved up that I would not have to work for two years. So I wouldn't mind studying full time or part time. Do you have any videos on language programs. Or could you possibly offer some links or do a future video. I need to move to Japan since my Mom is very ill in a nursing home. And I want to spend some time with her before she passes. She is a US citizen, currently a Japan permanent resident. She used to be a Japanese citizen but gave it up when she married my Dad in Hawaii. He was Japanese American born in Hawaii to Japanese parents.
Hi, I think I am somewhat in the same situation as you were. I am in grad school in Japan (studying architecture ) where I am the only foreigner. I want to work in Japan but again, even thinking working in company with only Japanese gives me anxiety ( partucularly because of my poor language). And going thru job interviews gives me nightmare. There are 発見会社s with many foreigner employees, but the pay, facilities are just so, so. How was your experience as a shakaijin. If its Ok to you please also share what type of company you worked in.
Hi everyone i have a question, does japan Mext Scholarship supports Information technology courses? Im planning to per-sue my dream of being a Computer programmer
I passed the application portion for the specialized training scholarship. There were 2 other people with me, the english was easy... the Japanese was a bit tricky... i have been studying Japanese with a teacher but the exam there were many vocabulary and structures that i haven't locked it in my head. But the math... i feel like i was let down because my high school made us rely on calculators that when came the exam i froze.. i recognized the problems but didn't know how to solve them... in all honesty i flunked it but never left it blank. Im not sure if there going to pass me through but ill know tomorrow. There can only be so much said on an application and an exam but the real thing that shows who you truly are is not by some test scores...its the chance to talk to the person... thats what shows them who you really are. Even though if i dont make it, that doesnt mean im going to quit learning Japanese and not become a Mangaka Artist in Japan....Never... no matter what i will find another way. I feel like Naruto when he was taking the Chunin exams... not knowing anything and worried if he is going to pass but through it all he somehow managed to find another way... "just you wait.. some day ill become a Mangaka Artist who can speak japanese... because thats my ninja way" "Until i become a Mangaka Artist in Japan who can speak fluent N1 Japanese.. theres no way im giving up... BECAUSE THATS WHO I AM"
I passed the research proposal screening but failed the interview due to getting sick from an inflammation combined with hard-hitting questions... It was frustratating but I will do it every year until i get it or turn 35...
Thanks a lot for this video! I didn't know that I had to apply for the MEXT so long before, so I unfortunately didn't apply... However I'm curious about the list you are mentioning. I checked it, and it seems that 2 of the universities I attended are on it, the one I'm going to attend is on the list, and I intend to ask for an exchange program during my program in Japan to one of the university ALSO on the list. The big question is now: attending 4 (or 3 if I don't get the exchange program) universities of the list count?? or do they just count it one time? Thanks a lot!
Whichever ones you've done a full program and graduated from (not exchange) would count towards points. You then get additional points for different levels of degrees and for them being in Japan, so not exactly the same category but you can squeeze points out of different schools for sure!
I have a huge question...as someone who wants to live in japan i just have to ask if it is true that jaapanese people dislike foreigners and that it is difficult to live in japan as a foreigner???
I really think it comes down to attitude and willingness to learn the language. It's not perfect here but no where is, and I've enjoyed my life here so much. I've met people who have struggled here who very obviously would have struggled back home for the same issues. Either way it's worth trying for a bit. I feel like you'll know in about a year.
So to get a master's degree you need to transition as an actual student correct? And you go through the entrance exam? If you dont do this what does the research account for, just experience in your CV?
Correct, your research would just be on your CV. If you arrange to publish it with your school per the HSP visa rules you might be able to get 5 pts that way but not every university is set up for the correct publishing method 😵💫
oh lol guess this StoryLearning company is dishing out sponsorships right now cuz the video i watched right before this (tips on learning korean) was also sponsored. Good to know they have Japanese too; now i gotta try it lol
I have to ask: does the permanent residency visa expire if I live outside of Japan for a period of time and then have to start all over again? or is it permanent permanent? like glued to me til the day I expire from this forsaken place?
My schools in the UK are on that list! I’m about to graduate from a a masters course here. I felt like the Mext was too advanced for me at the time and chose to do schooling here and think about a PhD at Waseda. I had no idea it gave you extra points, and no idea non-Japanese schools are also on the list! This gives me hope if I decide against mext (or I’m not accepted). And when you say 1 year fast track, does this mean 1 year off the original 10 years or it you only have to wait one year to be eligible for the PR?
don't like the ageism practiced by these programs. it promotes a connotation tht only youths should/can pursue education when in reality people come from all sorts of circumstances where they may not have been able to study while younger

Loretta, the info you provide on the MEXT program is so valuable that it needs to be documented!
Thank you! I love your channel soo much and your videos are always extremely helpful. I'm 22 and want to do a Masters in Japan in a few years and thanks to you I don't feel lost.
Thanks Loretta for the new MEXT video! Your MEXT videos helped me so, SO much years ago and I'm now close to graduating from my master's at todai :) You dropped some very nice info here too especially about job hunting/外資系 here as well which I hope people will be able to pick up on~
I don't know if you've covered this in a different video, but I think I've definitely received a certain level of antagonism from some locals regarding being a government-funded scholar (the whole using their tax dollars thing) which I have struggled a bit to grapple with.
Please make a video about how to write a research proposal🥺I would highly appreciate it since it's so crucial 💙
合意どおりに納品しました。 : )
I remember watching your MEXT videos as a teenager about 5-6 years go.
Yes please would love a video on how to write a research proposal
Thanks for the video. I would love to see a video about networking in Japan as a grad student!
Really appreciate all your help and tips about MEXT!
Hey, I have the same dream! I am thinking about going for MEXT exam too!
Hello I thought they we’re supporting higher education I didn’t know they would support art n theory’s ?
@@hamko9417 theres different sections of each catergory depending on what school you want to go, as far as i know I heard that the art section was only applicible for 1 person and more limited compared to others such as science etc.
Hi does japan Mext scholarship support Informatin Technology? Course?
@@Johndavepogimo21 You would have to research schools in Japan that offer an Information Science program
wow, before I really get into the video, can I just say: has it really already been 4 YEARS since you graduated!!!!! oh my days! how time has gone by! and I've been subscribed to you since before you graduated! that's gotta be like 5 years now! oh my god how time flies!😮😮youve come so far Loretta!!😭😭♥♥
I'd really love to see a video covering the research proposal side of things. It was very confusing to me tbh😅
I literally just got an email from MEXT this morning that bears a bad news; my application has been rejected based on the written examination that I did last month. (I applied for MEXT for undergraduate.)
Boy am I devastated right now.
Thanks for the video and the tips! MEXT scholarship is a wonderful opportunity to study in Japan.
LORETTA I NEED YOU TO TALK ABOUT JOB HUNTING FOR FOREIGNERS , ESPECIALLY MEXT SCHOLARSS PLZZZ
Aha, that tip about the timeliness and urgency of the research topic for MEXT was probably why I didn't make it past the consulate round on my application. I totally just did a topic I thought I could tolerate going to grad school to study😆
But going through the application process prepared me for all the planning it takes to move abroad. And now I'll be going for a year just to study at a language school--no grad school required. Gonna make sure I get in on some networking early!
Thanks for your super clear, concise, and informative video!
Yes Loretta, please keep bringing these topics to your channel 🔥
Wow this was very informative thanks for sharing this
If you are considering MEXT scholarship, you should also consider Chinese CSC scholarship, it is much easier to get. And if you are a graduate already, you can also study in English. But of course, if you prefer Japan over China, then good luck with your MEXT application! 🙂
You really inspire me! I can see what I'm aiming for after doing my degree at my local university.
Loretta, I have missed your videos I'm happy to play catch up with what's been going on with you and your growing family.👍
Then if you don’t really want to teach English, you can look for a job related to your software stuff the first year while you work and then transition out asap 😎
so informative, thank you so much.
Thank you so much. So enlightening. I remember watching your clips last year while applying for MEXT. Interestingly, I am presently a research student at YNU, where you graduated from.
More vids please
WOW, just WOW!
Buddhists believe in reincarnation
It could be a factor?
Please do a whole separate video on Job Hunting in Japan for foreign students… plz !!
I am so proud of you!🎉❤
Your accent sounds really good. Love your videos.
I got accepted for the scholarship and didn't see the email that i got accepted for the competition until the day they were already passing it, the biggest regret of my life
So interesting! As always 😍 more info about the research project also about getting and doing internships in Japan 😊
I appreciate your informative videos. ❤
You graduated 4 years ago! I remember when you got accepted. Time flyyyyyyys!
Too. FAST.
Thank you for the information this is so helpful i still have 2 more years till i can apply i just hope i can actually pass the tests 🤞
I wondered why Japan had gotten so much cooler 4 years ago...
Much appreciated it. Can definitely relate to the uni websites looking like scams. Same thing when applying for Taiwan universities. I swear they could hire me, a person with zero website skills, and I can still make a better website 😂
Has it been 4years? Omg - it’s been a minute! 😎
Thank you for the well-presented video...
Thank You So Much for this video.
Oh man I wish I was smart, you have so much great advise!! ❤
I'm glad you're doing well, and thanks for secret list of schools. I just noticed the school I'm graduating from now and the school I'll be joining for my PhD in Japan are on the list. That's pretty lucky! Does have more than one give extra points for the visa?
Reading the point list my lawyer sent I think you only get list points for one school but you get more points for multiple degrees

Definitely email your Japan consulate, they'll know the specific age range/entry processes for your country👀👀
Does mext has negative marking ??
Am I required to write a detailed research for my application?
If yes how many pages ?
Thank you for this video! Do you know an approximate time span for which we have to work full-time to get those points for an HSP visa? And yep, please do post a video on research proposal if you can!
Could therebe a fast track towards becoming citizen instead of pr since im stateless i was looking for marriage but god its so difficult 😞
🥺🥺🥺👉👈.. please make a Social Media group for MEXT aspirants.. please please please.....
Greetings Dear,
My name is Christiana from Liberia.
I’m a current MEXT applicant. Your UA-cams videos on the programs have been really helpful. Thank you
However, can you talk more about the University qualifying entrance exam to achieve regular Masters student status. I applied for a program in Geoscience and have passed the first screening. I am nervous about the entrance aspect and want to be prepared. Thank you
Best of luck Christiana🥰🌟!!!
I'm sure this video will be helpful to someone!^_^ Happy to see you've doing well!^_^ Happy Father's Day to Boomer! 🥳🎉🥂 God Bless your family!^_^
you are amazing. ❤
im considering going to med school in my country after that moving to japan as a doctor. to do that i need atleast N1 and japanese medicine knowledge what do you think about that
what is the best age to apply in the MEXT program? im graduating high school and am currently 16 so I really wanna know
Is it possible to get a 2-year student visa for a normal Japanese language class, perhaps private not associated with a University.
And how much of the application was done entirely on paper!?
Thanks for providing the super secret list bahahaha
YOU HAVE A DISCORD?!
oh lol guess this StoryLearning company is dishing out sponsorships right now cuz the video i watched right before this (tips on learning korean) was also sponsored. Good to know they have Japanese too; now i gotta try it lol
They're trying to GETCHA. Let me know what you think if you do the free trial!!!
I have to ask: does the permanent residency visa expire if I live outside of Japan for a period of time and then have to start all over again? or is it permanent permanent? like glued to me til the day I expire from this forsaken place?
Was I the only person that was stoked to see American Universities on the list (mines included) for the HSP Visa?😂
I'm sorry but WHAT? No painkillers--like at all?! 😱 Ain't no WAY! 😭
There are some yes but they are few and far between, especially at dentists and women's clinics
Depending on how many points you have, possibly one year total once you're on HSP visa
Looked this up and apparently we're far too old for this scholarship.😂
Yoo kerby moved
omg I FINALLY CAUGHT IT ON TAPE😱

don't like the ageism practiced by these programs. it promotes a connotation tht only youths should/can pursue education when in reality people come from all sorts of circumstances where they may not have been able to study while younger
