Removing the battery can cause an high unregulated voltage to appear on the output of the alternator along with very spiky transits from the unsmoothed output running the risk of serious damage to the electronic ignition and on modern cars ECU units. It can also damage the regulator of the alternator too, although this I am not so sure about this.
Good stuff and hello from Finland. I have same engine on Audi 80 1991 but aftermarket 4 point fuel injection because i don't have nerves to adjust the carburetors :)
What I like about your channel is that you're not up your own arse 😎 So many UA-cam channels are full of look at me, look what I can do types where you are down to earth and acknowledge you don't know everything. But give it another year and you'll be all ferrari and bling 🤣😉
Good job getting it running! If it was a slide carb (e.g motorbike type) then I would be adjusting the needle to get rid of the 1/2 throttle bog, but as these are butterfly style carbs, I have no idea, sorry! Maybe going up one jet size on the main will help without making it becoming too rich on full throttle?
Side draught carburetors are notoriously difficult to setup, several factors could be causing it to bog down. Do you have the correct size main jets installed, is the ignition timing correctly set, is the vacuum/mechanical advance system operating correctly on the distributor? Hope you find out what it is. Just love the induction sound 😍
These engines have to have silicone gaskets if you don't always see oil leaks, the same thing happens on mine, it's kind of annoying there always appears a leak sooner or later, vw engines without a little oil are not true vw 😂😂
I like this. Constructive tip - get rid of the screw clamps on the fuel line and replace with smooth band fuel injection clamps, even for a non-injected engine. Even clamping pressure without hose damage.
Very clean car! Try hook up a return line and a fuel pressure regulator, this means you will have cold fuel at the carbs all the time (consistent air to fuel ratio) and then you don't have to worry about flooding your float bowls. Looking forward to seeing this car drive and making good noises. For the oil leak, try a dab of rtv between cracks like by the timing cover and engine block. Goodluck 👍
Those rules in Belgium really suck! Here in the Netherlands it's still really easy (as long as it lasts...) go to the nearest RDW station, show something that looks like a receipt to prove it's not stolen (hand written piece of paper will do lol) pay €65 and done, new engine is registered on your car.
Very good!!! This hole in acceleration (from low and medium to high) happens because the pressure in the collector is dropping a lot, reaching almost zero. Try using smaller venturis for more air speed. The larger the venturi, the more air with less velocity, and the smaller the venturi, the less air but with more velocity. Consequently you will have to change the size of the gicles too. I've had this same problem on my air cooled with this pair and it took me a while to fix it too.
Hello, try a 1.9tdi oil dipstick, longer and a little curved. Too bad I don't speak better English or that you don't speak French .... Anyway, it's a pleasure to watch your videos and understand what I can !!!! Great and nice job....
It sounds great. You managed to get wheel spin in 2nd gear. NICE!!! Good build as usual and yeah sucks the gearbox has to come out but better now than later. 😀
@memphis Before taking off the gearbox check your oil filter and oil cooler. I installed a 2e engine in a mk2 inspired by your videos an currently have the issue that the oil cooler drips. The oil drips from the cooler than goes to the point where the sump and block meet and goes all around the engine along the oil pan gasket and drips out of the bell housing and behind the engine!
All my regards, my friend, I also work in the field of mechanics. I watch all your videos. You have a great job. You are skilled, my friend. I am getting better, my friend. All my greetings to you.💯👍👍😎
Great job! I am really enjoying your videos (I've owned 140 and 240 wagons). In some gasket installations, where two surfaces meet under the gasket (as in the rear crank seal housing and front timing cover) you need to spread gasket sealer over the seam of the mating surfaces. If it were mine, I would replace the pan gasket again, but put a good gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket. If the pan mating surface is not completely level, this could help make it seal properly. It's also a heck of a lot easier than pulling the gearbox. It would be worth a try. Good Luck!
haaaa if your leaking oil smells strong it's gear oil. But as you say if you have changed the seal of the engine oil pan and it is still leaking your problem surely comes from your oil seal at the crankshaft outlet. After on the high engine, there is an oil sensor but if you have not had the problem before, it will surprise me that it comes from there. Good diagnosis ;) I recently watched your car project on youtube and I love it
Great job and you have an elevator nice, I think for the oil leak it is your flywheel seal but it must be check. I had the similar problem on my dx engine. See you ✌️
Great project. Why don't you want to have a fuel return line. I think your carb have an output also, to prevent overflow. But it sounds like a diesel with the ticking sound from the valves.
Whatever microphone and/or camera/audio recorder/cellphone you use to record de sound of the engine, you have to be sure it doesn't have an "automatic gain control" or, if so, that you can (and do) turn it off, because what happens with most recording systems is that, in order to have the entire clip arround the same dB level, it turns up and down it's gain depending on how loud the source of the sound is, so you could whisper or shout and you will sound equally loud on the recording. Perhaps you knew this already, but if you didn't, it's important. Other thing, it'd be best if you could use a proper sound recorder apart from your camera, It could be a cheap used TASCAM or ZOOM H2/H4 with a "Condenser" microphone and not a "Cardioid" microphone. Im a big fan of yours exactly because i know nothing about mechanics, but I do know about making and recording sounds haha. ♥
great job friend, I'll be running into the same tuning procedures when I finish overhauling my project's engine and fit the AEM o2 sensor. I've heard that these are the generally accepted values: 13.8 idle, 12.5 full throttle, 14.7 cruise
Cool stuff mate, my tip for the future, do not hang to many key'zzz in the O ring of the car key. The weight of the key hanging in the lock will wear it faster over time and will end that the key no longer rotate in the lock. Happend to me 2 times with my 924 and it was a real pain in the beepppp to fix it. There are some topic's about that modern issue ;) Take good care mates, Regards from here, the NL and NZ ( Dunedin )
Your engine sounds lazy. I don't know what was modified on the engine but on a crossflow engine you need lots of attention and money into the head. With you side draught arrangement you can only expect it to perform with a 288 cam or wilder. Ideally a 298. Without a veneer pulley you will never get it tuned for optimum performance. Your compression needs to be in the region of 11.2-1. These crossflow heads runs 10 degrees hotter than a U-flow head so a lower velocity oil with an oil cooler is essential. Good luck with future developments and enjoy the ride.
Oil not leaking when engine is not running doesn't necessarily means it isn't the oil pan. When hot, oil gets thinner and leaks from spots where it couldn't go through before. I had a similar headache with my car. Oil seems to be coming mostly from between the gearbox and the engine, and I had the same thoughts as yours. But actually, it was just hot oil sneaking through the oil pan gasket, and wind pushing it back onto the gearbox, giving a very misleading look when looking from under. I just tightened a little more the bolt (A LITTLE), a little more than factory torques, and oil leaks were gone. Thing is : aftermarket gaskets are not necessarily made of the same material as the factory ones. and factory torques apply for a factory gasket.
Measuring the temperature on shiny headers is not ideal. The surface mirrors other heat sources, in this case surrounding tubes. For best results paint spots matt black. Love the swap, looks great!
Hello, I'm from Germany. Your engine has a little problem: Either the oil pump is not delivering well or your hydraulic valve lifters are not working properly, the engine does not normally clack.
You might be able to bend your dip stick tube forward, so you can clear your carbs. I shortened and angled mine by fabbing up a tube made from a aluminum mini mag flashlight, and shortened the dip stick to match.
Great job. The Golf is now becoming a very special car. Have you considered making a cold air box with an air filter? All that dirt being sucked into the carbs and engine breaks my heart. And it will make more power with cool air.
bro the sound of the carbs pulling air, its just amazing
Same upload time as M539 Restorations. Coincidence or 2 cool dudes timing it?
Coincidence, although we are cool 😎

I must say this golf is mighty cool! :)
My dad had a Golf like this, man does this bring back some memories from when I was a kid :D
Hi Memphis.
I really enjoy watching your MK1 Videos while building my own Scirocco. Go for it! Good work!

Car sounds gorgeous, best of luck finding and fixing oil leak
Heel mooi klank van die carbs! Hopelijk krijg je de olielek gefixt. Groetjes uit Brugge!
thank you for your videos ,they are so informative and I learn alot.

Nice work!! Also check that oil isn't dripping from the valve cover gasket area sometimes drips down if undertighted.
Good luck brother

Hey Memphis, if a larger idle jet helped things, then perhaps try going up in size again?
Yes, i’m going to experiment with that again
Bummer about the oil leak, car sounds awesome though. Nice work. 👌
Well done, you making good progress 👍💪✌️😝
Try playing with idle jet holders a bit because they can also change how your idle jets react.
