  • My channel aims to demystify the law school process, especially from the perspective of an elite T14 institution. In this video, I discuss the process rising 2L students go through in order to secure a prestigious BigLaw firm job for their 2L summer and beyond. This is by no means the only job track out of law school, nor is it necessarily the best. So much of the job search process is about fit, luck, and other factors outside of your control!
    The advice in this video, as in all of my law school videos, comes from my personal experience and perspectives. While it can provide a starting point, you should not take it as definitive or directly applicable to your situation! For info on jobs out of law school, your best resources are your school's career services office, or alumni from your school working in the legal profession.
    Happy job hunting!

    This is video is tailored to her experience in law school. Not every law school have these opportunities where students are able to start of as a summer associate and then, if admitted to the bar, work as a full-time associate in big law. Lower ranked or unranked law schools do not have the same job opportunities extended to their students that higher ranked law schools have. So, to make a long story short, if you want to work in big law, go to a higher ranked law school.

    Another great vid. I don't know if this is still done, but when I was in law school you could split your summer between two firms. So if you got an offer from Gibson Dunn and Irell & Manella you could do half the summer at each firm. The reason this is important is because it increases your chances of getting an offer. First, you will seem more desirable because both firms want you. Secondly, it's a lot easier to be on your best behavior for half a summer than full summer. In short, neither firm gets to know you well enough to really have a reason to say "no." This was something I learned later and I regret I did not split my summer, as I had multiple offers.

    This is so fascinating. As someone who is considering law school, I never knew anything about OCIs or what big law is even like

    This video was really informative, I’m a criminal justice major that is just now interested in applying to Law school when I get my bachelors. Your videos feel like a guide for trying to arrange all the steps in my head and stuff. Thank you

    I got into Columbia law and the majority of graduates end up in big law. I am very excited!

    My best guess is to land a job in a small to midsize law firm so you can have the chance to do REAL legal work from the beginning, to LEARN THE ROPES from day one instead of being the personal secretary of a Partner in a big law firm, doing the dirty work the Partner does not want to do, just reading extensive and boring documents and summarizing its contents to the Partner. This is especially true for trial lawyers, the more time you spend in the Courts litigating instead of in the office highlighting contents of a document to a partner, the more skilled and better lawyer you will be. I also believe that the Justice Dept. in Washington DC is a very good training setting for a lawyer starting his/her career. The pay is definitively not as good as in a big law firm, but that is the time to concentrate in your learning curve instead of the potential income. The high income will come later, when a law firm will be interested in your accumulated experience litigating on behalf of the government.

    What would be a talking point if you were to tell an interviewer, for-instance, you were more interested in transactional work (rather than litigation)? I'm considering matriculating at law school this fall and wanting a better idea of the two different focuses in a corporate setting. Thank you so much!

    I'm curious but not sure if you want to answer this, are you learning more towards corporate or litigation? either way, I really enjoyed this video, as you're such an eloquent speaker!

    Hi there! Your video was very helpful and reassuring. Are there any extracurricular activities that you believe have a greater value than others, at least for the employer? Thank you so much!

    Thank you for this very informative video. I've been working in public sector for nine years, but I'm not a U.S. citizen. Would a non-citizen (foreigner) have a chance to get job interviews while doing 1L? Btw, I like the way you speak! :)

      I'm not too sure! I know we have some LLM (international students who come to the US for a one-year legal degree) students who interview for firm jobs during OCI, but other than that I don't really know the details. I imagine it's possible, though.

      If you go to a good school (t14) JD program, you can get a 2l internship / full time offer.

    Do you know if anyone who went to a lower ranked law school and how their experience compares?

    • @FortheTimeBeingchannel
      @FortheTimeBeingchannel  5 років тому +2

      I can’t really speak to that from personal knowledge but from what I can tell, it becomes a lot more competitive to get these jobs and law firms may look more closely at things like ranking and grades. As you go down the rankings it becomes very difficult to get a job at a top law firm because there are only so many jobs to go around, unfortunately

      She’s not an employment attorney, or criminal attorney. Also, you should check your state’s laws on usage of criminal violations and employment considerations. Being convicted of any crime can have an affect on employability - specifically in the private industry
