      If my ultimate goal is to be a professor, am I advantaged by going to the highest ranking school I can get into, or should I try to attend the school I ultimately want to teach at, or at least in the state(s) where I might want to live?

I feel like I can learn something special. Also I like the trend that people from all socialstrata make youtube videosJust an impression, also interessting how his first videos are very "youtube-professional".
      Also he spins into memes now, reviewing popular culture stuff, and must be shaking his head a bit from the million views difference to his core videos.

    Recent law school grad. I might add: multi-colored highlighters. Book briefing is the best way to be sure you’re ready when you get cold called, without using a bunch of time writing a physical brief. Highlight the holding in green, the parties in yellow, facts in pink, important sounding dicta in blue, etc. I recommend mild liners for blue and purple, since those highlighters are usually too dark with normal pens. Can attest that the book stand and paper planner/calendar thing works wonders for your neck and productivity! I still use a paper planner because it reduces the time I spend staring at a screen and is way less likely to pop up a text message to throw my concentration while working (unlike my phone)

    These advises apply not only to law school, but to any other academic field either. I am an engineering student, but we face very similar problems as you described. Also as a side note, as a true engineer, I never trust a single piece of technology to wake me up, I always put on alarms on two separate devices.

      You heard it here second! I forgot to mention in the video that the moldable silicone earplugs work better in certain circumstances (especially during sleep because the pillow doesn't poke them into your ear). They were designed for swimmers to keep water out, but I think they work just as well as regular foam earplugs. Link in the description.

    Hi D, I have a suggestion for a video about a day/week in the life of your job specifically. How you prepare for a case, how you fit in time for taking care of yourself, how you juggle multiple cases.
    Also, have you ever taken a case that required you to go against something you valued, but your dedication to serving your client outweighed that? You seem to have a lot of integrity, so it would be interesting to know how you would handle that.
    Loving the channel and your earnest approach to helping people out.
    Happy Holidays,

    I got an electrical outlet timer (the kind you use to make it look like you're home when you go on vacation) for $7 and connected it to a lamp I already owned. It turns on at 4:00AM every morning, and my alarm is set to 4:30AM. I am an extremely deep sleeper who only fully wakes up two or three hours into the day, but since I've DIY'ed the sunrise alarm, I've felt much better in the mornings and have been more likely to actually get up with the alarm!

  • @David-bz7pi

    A couple of important notes:
    1) On the earplugs. If you do wear them every night, be very sure to also clean out your ears (not with q-tips). Use the water from taking a shower to help clean the inside of your ears. Your ears are constantly pushing wax out, and ear plugs actually block it in and interrupt the process. Daily cleanings (or near daily) are very useful to help prevent any wax issues.
    2) On the phone. If you are too cheap to buy a separate alarm, look at the settings on your phone for a "night time mode". IOS definitely has this, and I am about 99% sure Android does too. The tl;dr is that you have a set time that notifications are disabled. Mine are from about 9PM through 6AM. While I generally sleep far less than that window, I like to have a buffer in case I go to bed early, or wake up a bit later. Keep that on, and consistent. Also, if you're bringing your cell/tablet/etc into the bedroom - *do not use it*, either one, at all during the time in the room. Personally, I still use my cell as an alarm, but I just keep it charged on my nightstand. Also, in the morning, when I get up, I do not check my cell phone (outside turning off the alarm) while in the bedroom. I leave the bedroom first, then check my phone. Bedroom is for sleep, only sleep, and nothing but to sleep (so help me sleep?)

    • @Reofrax
      @Reofrax 3 роки тому +1

      How do you hear the alarm when you have ear plugs in though?

    • @David-bz7pi
      @David-bz7pi 3 роки тому

      @@Reofrax The best route I've found is to use something like a smart watch that can have some interaction with the alarm on the phone.
      In my case, I have an Apple watch. I can wear it at night, and any alarm I put on my phone will vibrate on the watch. That's usually enough to wake me up, assuming I got decent sleep.
      If you're really dead tired, or can't wake up very easily, then this doesn't work particularly well at first. It takes some time to get used to, but does work once you get used to it assuming enough sleep is gained. The main risk you would run into is hitting a REM cycle. Those happen every 90 minutes or so, so making sure you go to sleep and wake up at some time as close to divisible by 90 as possible should mitigate the REM issue.

    • @Reofrax
      @Reofrax 3 роки тому

      @@David-bz7pi so. I dont get enough sleep, i never do, its just the way it is. I have to wake myself up with 5 alarms with black metal playing and even that isnt guaranteed. So I wont be trying ear plugs, the lamp alarm thing though, ive heard good things about those.

    • @LegalEagle
      @LegalEagle  6 років тому +22

      Ya, that's a great strategy. My only problem is that I can't be trusted not to check Twitter before I go to bed if my phone is anywhere near me. Better for me to just keep the phone outside of my bedroom. I put a charging dock on a small table in the hallway outside of my bedroom.

      I solve the problem of checking my phone by not having it next to the bed, even though it's what I use as an alarm. Goes back to my time in high school where I'd just turn the alarm off and go back to sleep if it was next to me. Put it across the room and it forces you to actually get out of bed to turn it off. Much easier to then not just go back to sleep.

    I feel like this is good advise for anyone going to school or working in an intense field or one that requires a huge amount of mental energy and reading/study/paperwork. I work in healthcare and a lot of them could apply there. One I would add is a little clippy thing that sticks or clamps on to your desk top computer monitor(I suppose it'd work on a laptop too) it's a simple little contraption that has a horizontal arm that swings out with one or two clips on. Then you can secure paper in them and it holds it while you type. It saves your neck and saves time. It makes is so you don't have to look down at the paper, back up to the screen, back down at the paper trying to find where you left off. They make free standing versions also but they take up too much valuable real estate on my already crowded desk.

Pilot metropolitans are very good workhorse pens that only cost $10 and can work on non-fountain pen paper. I am totally in to avoiding noise pollution...but way back in school, I used to have a pair with me at all time...especially during exams...I could concentrate better than anyone else.
    Best Suggestion!
    BTW, I will buy those book stands as well...I like that idea.
    ...and I'm not in Law School, but your videos are educational.
    Best on UA-cam. Keep it up!

    I swear law school is like ship life. Writing on the windows is a classic move. We write the next turn on the windows so we can keep our eyes staring out the windows and not miss our turn. No I am not making this up. I have also done onboard on the window. Just be sure to put an eraser on the sharp point of your compass

    I set a daily "do not disturb" function on my phone so I don't have to deal with notifications over night. I like to use my phone as an alarm because since it doesn't bother my wife as much when it's in vibrate mode.

    A lot of writing on windows happens in software. Actually not a pun. At Amazon, there were dry erase markers at most windows for impromptu brainstorming/diagramming.

    That sunrise alarm could be problematic for those who sleep on their stomach or for those who may nuzzle their face in the blankets as a reaction to it.

    Good stuff. The ear plugs? Often your brain just dials up to listen (I've got gun range level ear muffs. I can follow a conversation through them.) Try earbuds, if they don't work then I would suggest earbuds, but instead of your favorite music, have a some Mozart, Bach, Chopin tracks. If these classical composers are your favorites? Still okay. Don't get ersatz classical music or Muzak, Elevator music-- that's just insipid and you end up being distracted trying to 'name that tune' being melted. UA-cam has some 3 hours of Bach, etc. study videos that are good too.
    Part of any discipline is a regular sleep pattern. I always get up at 5, even on those days I then go back to bed to sleep in. To consistently fall asleep when you want, I think white noise is much better than earplugs. , but watch out for the bad, noticeably repetitious stuff. The apps I checked about 5 years ago were all like this, maybe they're better now. EcoTones machine I've had for ten years. Also good for falling asleep is an audiobook, something you've read, something good. Eventually I've found I begin to focus in on it, enjoying it even more; but it's no longer good for falling asleep. Whiteboard, butcher paper. A good whiteboard 2x3' is the missing component of your computer. I'm good with graphics programs, database, spreadsheet, word processing; they just don't do what a white board can do. I make too many 'skipped step' errors to be able to use butcher paper, meaning I'm listings the first four things so I can get to the next 4 I need to work on. I forget a step...Another good thing to do is once you've sorted out your whiteboard diagram, take a photo of it, but maybe make a neat copy on butcher paper. If you're in a study group and your handwriting sucks, get a digital projector. After you've whiteboarded, type out the sections on your word processor. Use a font like Chalkboard, then project the text onto the butcher paper and trace it. Sounds like a lot of work, but you quickly get really fast. If you have blocks of text arranged in a circle on your whiteboard, then just move the paper around instead of trying to lay it out on the computer. (I find that a lot of this additional work helps me remember, makes it easy for others to read it, but all this might not work for you. Also I did a lot of this as a school teacher, so it might not be relevant to law school.
    The earplug behavior mod? That's a good tip. Are their any recordings of final exam room noise?

    I noticed you speak of a physical calendar in the video, but list Butcher Paper instead on the video info. I like the suggestion of both... but maybe remove the Butcher paper on this video, replace it with calendars, and then make another things to buy video, and be sure to include the butcher paper in it. I hope this didn't sound rude to say, I am just a fan of your channel and am offering a suggestion I hope helps you. Keep up the great work.
