Using a cane can help with flare ups of hip or knee pain. Here is a video on using a Cane/crutch to relieve hip & knee pain ua-cam.com/video/VzT3L_N0da4/v-deo.html
I really appreciate you Bob and Brad..the two most famous..physical therapist..on the internet 💛
Thank you!
Thank you for the tip on shaking the cane at little kids to stay off the lawn, I've been doing it wrong for years. 🤣 This is WHY you are the most famous physical therapists on the internet. Love the show, thanks for all you do!
When I go up and down the stairs, I remember my doctor saying "up with the good, down with the bad." I have been waiting for a video like this. Thanks!
Happy to help!
Yeah, I was taught that too by a physio when I was on crutches.
I don't always need a cane, but for those late night bathroom trips - I feel more secure walking.
I learn so much from you gentlemen. Thank you & may God bless you both for your kindness to others.
I need to do "To the porcelain on all fours" wee-wee hours crawl 'cause my bladder hates to wait, thing's so spoiled I sure won't miss being a slave to it once I cross over ⚰ !
Thank you for watching!
It’s providence! I left the hospital around three hours ago with my first cane. Here you gentlemen are to guide me! Many thanks.
Great to hear!
That Bob immediately gravitates towards the cool wooden stick cane that Brad had also gravitated towards when he first found it. That was really funny!
LOL, glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for the pep talk, I definitely needed that. I push it too hard. I go from feeling good to flaring up; hard to find the middle ground. Great reminder!:) Miss you Bob!
Thank you for mentioning the cane's height. I am going to pass along this information to my husband who is very unsteady on his feet after a stroke. Best wishes from Middle Tennessee!
Thanks!
Thank you for the tip on shaking the cane at little kids to stay off the lawn 😄
Love my cane , I need it mostly for standing still. I take one on walks all the time, aggressive animals and people can be handled with the cane. Then I never know when spasm will hit and its good to keep you off the ground. FYI I put a section of pipe insulation on my cane so when not needing cane I use this for grip exercises.
Thanks for sharing!
I also use mine for standing still! I get dizzy spells, so having the cane is helpful so far (got it yesterday)
I just want to say that, even if I'm under the weather by the time I've posted this comment, I appreciate your videos. Thanks for your help.
This ought to help me plenty in my senior years.
I love you guys, Bob and Brad, especially your humour. Wishing you the very best! Lotsa love to all ❤❤❤
Brilliant, lads. I started with one foldable walking stick (u.k.) and over the years progressed (or should that be regressed) to two with ergonomic grips. With long use the lower part that adjusts for length became a little loose and at every step there was an annoying, clicking sound as the bottom part dropped slightly then was pushed up as the weight went on. To fix this I pushed the parts together then taped it with Gorilla tape. Job done - silent walking again 🙂
Lol, "more sophisticated". Okeydoke, I'll take it.
Starter cane just arrived from Amzn today. No idea how to use it. 😊🎉
I love you guys! You have truly helped me! ❤️
Thank you so much for watching!
Tyvm I usually use my cane for my right leg and hip. Yet lately it's my left. So I switched it up to stay safe. I've been using a cane for nigh onto 10 years and I'm 55. Hugs ♥ 🤗
Keep up the great work, and thank you for watching!
Have bursitis left hip - really aggravated it this past week doing couple of yard projects. Have decided cane needs to used to decrease healing time. Thanks for great tips.
I hav my old fashioned mountain climbing ice axe..wood handle..it's a weapon also a cane...yodeling..
That's great, good thing climate change is only a myth! 💋 😇
Thanks for sharing
Great advice, you both are so helpful, bless you guys!
We are happy to help!
Wooden cane IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO. They are warm and comfortable and very sophisticated. The metal ones scream “ I am handicapped” which upsets many.
Thanks for sharing!
Unfortunately, they are not always the best choice ergonomically. I have four canes including the original wooden one.
Great teaching as always. You guys rock!
Thanks!
I'm using a very sturdy 1 piece aluminum crook top cane due to hip surgery . I wrapped the crook with handle bar grip tape for bicycles. Just enough cushion and non slip.
great alternative!
I use a motorbike foam handle grip. Perfect size.
Nicely explained...thank you. 😊
Thank you for your sound advice. It is true that many people misuse their canes.
Happy to help !
Yes, "House" uses his in his wrong hand despite what the physios told him!
Thanks! One bone to pick. I have peripheral neuropathy in both feet from Covid, and my static balance is shaky. So both feet are about equal. When going on stairs, I ALWAYS put the cane on the LOWER step, whether going up OR down. Putting it on the upper step means I have to lift my whole body weight from a less advantageous position when going up, and have less stability when going down. Always put the cane on the lower step.
Thanks!
I've used a cane for several years to have better balance. I don't have to be super disciplined about how I walk. I just do better with a third point of contact and just the slightest pressure on that third point. I find that I don't get as tired walking this way. I'm sure I'd get tired more quickly if I were putting much force on the cane. For many of us, just that little bit of force to provide balance is wonderful.
My experience as well. Good luck!
Thanks for sharing!
@@jeroldpaquette9068 Great!
Thanks so much! 👍👍😎😎
Very helpful video. I'm 38yrs old with CRPS and just had to order my first cane to use on my "bad" days when I can hardly walk. I had no idea how to use the darn thing and was resistant to getting one at my age, but the limping was hurting my back. I have back issues too and don't really need to make that worse either. Loved the Dr House reference, as I actually ordered a flamed cane much like his! 😂
If I forget my cane, my back remind me after about 20 steps.
And for the next lessons, how to twirl your cane like a cheerleader, followed by self-defense with a cane. ;-)
Right!
Thank you dear friends! watching this video I have found that I am doing 3 wrong things with my cane, I am hoping after I make these corrections I will use my cane correctly and get more body relief.
Hi. I like n follow your exercises . There is request to make video on sternum pain . I m confused with costocondrytus and sternum issue. Looking forward to see your video on this topic soon.
we have done some videos on this, here is the link to our channel with all videos we have done on this so far: ua-cam.com/users/BobBradsearch?query=sternum%20pain
Thanks, Bob and Brad!
Yall have helped me so much as i get older✊
Happy we can help! Keep up the great work!
the walking will certainly help me. i use my cane at least mostly for balance, but that means it's even more important to walk with the leg opposite of the cane.
Mind you, I've also realised that I need a cane that's generally longer than it should be, or my back aches when I walk.
Happy you found something that can help
I had no idea there was such a variety of canes. I remember having to alter my crutch when when I had to use crutches after leg issues. How does it compare to a walker I guess the walker is a stronger support? Love you guys.
A walker would be for more support, if you need more than a cane, then we would go to a walker
You are fantastic guys! Thank you so much!
Our pleasure! Brad
make sure you get cane with padded or foam handle. really helps if you have any arthritis 👍
🤔 I need to check the height of my canes.
Could you do a video about walkers? I see a lot of people bent over. Thanks again guys!!
We have done a few on walkers. Here is a link to our UA-cam channel with all related videos on walkers on it: ua-cam.com/users/BobBradsearch?query=walker
@@BobandBrad thanks. A few weeks ago you were talking about knee replacement and I had one a year ago and I complained about pain. I have an overhang on both L and R. I’ll need to have a revision done. Dr not sure yet to do a complete replacement or just the bottom half.
Do you have any videos on knee revision?
Thanks!
You guys are the greatest!!
21yo with a suspected connective tissue disorder. Never felt "disabled enough" to deserve a cane but that's wrong. I'm human and i deserve support and comfort in my life. I think a cane might really improve my life.
You will never know if you don't try and you are right! You DO deserve support and to live your best life! We would recommend you trying a cane to see if it can help improve your quality of life!
How about a video for hiking poles or hiking staff.
Thank you sooo much for this video.
Hello thanks for showing and telling how to adjust the right way for the height for the cane. I'm 57 years old. In November of 2023 I had broken my leg hip bone on the ball side it was broken looked like a saw blade I was told need a replacement I was passing out when I was put in the hospital the knocked me out and kept me out until the surgery was done . The PT Drs had shown to use the cane but now my bad leg the knee is acting up on it? Back in 1974 or 1976 at wrestling practice I hit the gym floor with now my bad leg the knee cap popped out the wrestling coach popped it back in and made me walk the pain off. My question is could the wrong height and the surgery could have it flared up on me. 6 months later or could it be the healing process is causing the knee trouble? Thanks
Some canes have a flip down seat guys...wish I never sold mine in my fortties.....now I'm 71
I think they sell them for golf tournament watchers.
Thanks for sharing
Have you guys ever done reaction videos to the Knees over Toes guy Ben Patrick?
Reaction videos?
@@BobandBrad Videos where you break down pros/cons of someone performing some exercises. Benefits, myths, etc. Have you heard of Ben Patrick Knees Over Toes guy?
Thank you for this! I was just diagnosed with severe arthritis in my ankles and I need a cane. It's weird being a young adult with a cane.😅😬
I started using one surreptitiously in my 30's as I'm hypermobile all over. But now I love my rollator, which I use surreptitiously in large malls. Now have four canes I also use - a folding cane perhaps if you want to hide disability a bit. I don't look ill and for employment reasons hid pain and fatigue. Good luck!
My Great Grandfather owned and used a cane that contained a rifle. He could lift the cane, aim, and fire.
Awesome, I'd prefer one with a metal
pin 📌 though then I could pick up stuff!
Oh man
@@joseenoel8093 LOL
I think it would be very handy some days! If only to scare the pants off annoying harassing people. "You don't need a cane" types. Geez, I'm nearly 70, in chronic pain since 23 yrs old. Using a cane about three years.
I just quit my job. The pain is unbearable.
My manager was very abusive towards me.
Way to go sugar, you don't have your health you don't have anything, I'm glad you're out of there and you deserve better!
We are very sorry to hear this!
@@joseenoel8093 Great words of encouragement, thank you!
Thanks for thos video. Great tips. Ya'll be blessed
Thank you!
Always wonderful 😊😊😊
Thanks for watching!
A few years ago my kids asked me what I'd prefer for my birthday, "x" or "an awesome (another word was used here - k$ck a**) walking stick"? I jumped on the walking stick. It is awesome and I get many compliments. I'm in a 3-point back brace most of the time and I much prefer the comments on the walking stck vs the brace.
Great to hear, thank you for sharing! Glad you like it!
I have permanent neuropathy nerve damage, and sometimes my right leg turns to jello and I lose balance, roll ankles, fall, go flying off my steps into my truck,, etc, you get the point. Happens the longer I am on my feet. Fused right SI and fused l4-s1. Anyway, I instinctively used the cane on my right side, because that's the leg that I lose control over. Should I be using the cane on my left side?
It isn't so much a pain thing, the pains chronic, in back etc, but I felt that if my right foot is coming to the ground and my left foot is still on the ground, but then my right leg gives way, it made sense to my brain that I would want the cane to be on the right side, so I have a stable grounding on both sides of my body, left (left foot) right (cane, because right leg turned to jello) .
Cliffs: When I put my right foot down, and go to lift my left food up when walking, my right leg will randomly give out.
I am open to changing, but local doctors and physical therapist never said a thing. Anyway. Thanks for the videos guys.
THANK YOU
You are very welcome
This is excellent! Thanks guys.
You are very welcome!
I have degenerative disc in my neck. They are causing EXTREME pain in my left shoulder. I've started PT a few weeks ago, but like on the weekend I am hurting. So bad,, I'm about to cry.
What can I do?? Thanks!!
Hmmmm, well if you're in pain you're working hard aren't you, no working isn't an option, I did cry when my groin injury surfaced and again as my hip went back to its more proper location. My bud had me terrified about Tylenol via what it would do to my stomach but honestly shouldn't have listened because it took me a ridiculous time to heal, good luck!
We are so sorry to hear this. Without being able to do a proper examination we wouldn't feel comfortable giving you advice on what to do since we are unable to know your specific situation. Do you have another diagnosis other than the degenerative disc in your neck? Here is a video that may help, but again, without knowing your specific situation, we can't say for sure what will help and what will not: ua-cam.com/video/0SLairHEutE/v-deo.html
@@BobandBrad I also have degenerative disc between L 1 and S1. Had lumbar laminectomy for that. Dr didn't use any support, so that area slipped and now have scoliosis. Have osteoarthritis in majority of back and neck. The PT seems to only help if the therapist applies strong pressure to the places that really hurt. Makes for a long weekend in pain.
Thank y'all for replying to my question.
@@joseenoel8093 Thanks, but I can only work for about 5-10 minutes at a time.
Thanks so much, guys!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you Bob and Brad
You are very welcome
Thank you very much! I cane is helping my balance
Great to hear!
What if you have to use 2 cans. I have a bad right knee which is bone on bone and si joint, rotated hip and weak leg issue on my left side. Can you do a video on that?
I will add this to our to do list
May I suggest a rollator? Mine is very sporty looking.
so my bad leg at the moment is my left leg, however my right wrist had been fully fused so i cant bend it, what would be the best style of cane for that?
I live in an apartment with only an outdoor staircase [Australia and sunny Qld] to access my apartment. The railing is on my left going up, and my good leg is my left leg. There is only one railing, with the building on the other side. I can't use the railing and the cane at the same time as you suggest!! I just muddle through. Any suggestions for this situation??
Good info!
Thanks!
I PURCHASED a nice hickory walking stick with a nice rubber tip, can use it for many ways but it keeps me from falling, and I can use it to stretch, should have 2 both legs hurt
Great to hear you like yours!
I love my rollator!
I need to know how, I reduce the swollen in my leg and it stay stiff all the time
Elevate, ice, compression, ibprofeun - here is a link to some videos we have done on this as well in case you wanted to watch more: ua-cam.com/users/BobBradsearch?query=swollen%20legs
I think you should see a doctor unless you have done so already. It could be a clot or lymphoedema / lipoedema and you'll need compression pantyhose / leggings.
I was never a fan of The Hobbit but if
Brad's up for modernizing his look then
it's ok!
LOL
I love you guys but walking with the cane on the opposite side of pain would find me on the ground more often than not! I have the unfortunate of having a knee which will completely go out on me. The only way to stay upright is with the cane on the same side.
Rollator maybe?
LG ..... Life is Good
Yes it is!
LOL ... hurt my knee a couple of years ago and had to use a cane; don't really need it anymore but I use in case I get attacked by dog.
My concern is people, not dogs. Animals often have better manners.
👍👍😎😎
After an injury 5.5 yrs ago I needed to use a cane (or rollator). I asked several medical professionals (doctors, nurses, therapists) what the right way to use it is and they all said there is a "way" just do what feels right. I didn't really believe them.
Did you try it?
Don't know about shaking a cane at kids, but there was one particular young male I really wanted to use it on as a numchuck. He was abusing me saying I didn't need it, trying to get sympathy, special treatment etc. What special treatment. I walk to the store, no disabled parking, no special treatment. I have OA in both hips and CPPD in right knee. I was handed the cane by a hospital physio as I had severe pain in left hip from doing a physio exercise! I'm hypermobile all over as well.
What is wrong with young people these days? I know I sound old but I'd never treat someone who was ill or with a disability that way. I blame YT! Maybe they should teach us self defence techniques for using it as well!
Hang in there gents
Thanks!
lol😄
:) Thanks for watching!
I just walk onto my porch open up my bathrobe..get out of hear u punks ...i'm terrible..
Omm
Course my leg is sore twins not in WORLD SERIES..
Sorry to hear you have sore legs!
N no I’m mom
Sounds like Bob just returned from happy hour !!
Takes 3 minutes to get past the bullshit part and start the reason for this video
An old old man flowing gray hair past his shoulders massive stone gray beard and wearing a flowing robe walk into ur office..spread his arms wide holding his walking staff...
good video bob is very informative but it would have been much better without brad.`he is definitely not a comedian and just louses up what bob is saying. cut him out.
did the taller guy have a stroke or was he just drunk? He was slurring his words and hard to understand
I think he said it was Ataxia. It affects his speech and balance, but not his thinking.
He's not drunk. He has some illness which has really affected his speech.
ataxia cerebelosa
He indicates it is slight aphasia. Bob’s delivery is markedly improving.
Clearly Bob was not under the influence of alcohol
Just drunk!
Course if warren buffet hav 4 buxom blonds carry ur chair around.
Thank you for watching
I wish you guys would just get to the point you waste too much time
Our thoughts exactly cuz. .... Errr....
We got the doorbell (oops Amazon guy split) to answer and anonymous on call display not be calling back!
Thanks for sharing, we have been working on it!
I'm glad you're working on it I wish you could think of it this way I'm sure you're a couple of lovely characters characters with wonderful personalities and interesting stories but that's not why I tune in to you I legitimately wanted to learn how to use the game but I couldn't listen to all of the baloney sauce and I never really found out The same has been on quite a few of you I really want to learn But I don't know if you ever get to the point and I just don't wanna stand there it's like click bait is it really worth my time will you ever really get to the point think of yourself as teachers not entertainers And your channel will be much more useful to me anyway I'm sure there's people that are just bored out of their socks and really have nothing important to do and they'll sit there and listen to it but I would bet the vast majority as a majority when they want to be entertained they turn to a different channel for entertainment Thanks for listening hope I didn't hurt your feelings it's just an opinion and I could be wrong
U no ur old when u fantasize about walking unaided..😳🙉🫂
