      They didn’t hit anything…..a part blew out from the inside. Still a mfg issue…..However, with thousands of these things being made, there are bound to be a few problems here and there. Nothing that consists of hundreds of parts can be perfect every time. I would still give Yamaha an “A” in outboards. Probably the best on the market.

      wazup3333 mines been out of warranty for years. The only “major” issue I’ve had is the fuel pump go out, but it actually turned out to be a collapsed fuel line that was causing fuel restriction. Ended up replacing the fuel pump anyway because it was already apart and I chalked it up to “preventative maintenance”.

      wolfe fishes funny you should say that about research. That boat will plane with one 300. The reason for dual engines is two fold. One is for safety, if one goes you have one to make it back. The other reason is two motors will push that boat easier than one. They will turn lest rpm and get better fuel economy than one. Over time those motors should last longer

      At least, with two engines, they could still get back to shore. If a single large engine fails, you're "dead in the water". You ALWAYS want an alternate means of propulsion, especially, in a boat like that, that's too big to paddle. Having more than one engine is the ideal solution.

    Okay, I have to comment. First of all there is a lot of anti Yamaha in this video and in the comments. If you know of a lower unit that wont go out then I would love to know about it. This isnt really a reflection of Yamaha since this happens with all of them. I still think something was hit, but even if it wasn't that's the ways she goes sometimes. I've ran a lot of outboards of various make and model and the only unit I've ever had go without hitting something was a left hand rotation unit and that happened on both a Mercury and a Yamaha to me. 75 percent of my hours are on Yamaha. I have maybe 15,000 (30,000 really since there are usually 2) hours, so not as much as some of you guys but enough to know that these outboard issues are pretty much universal. I will give mercury the nod for sweetest outboards these days if iam forced to answer, but Yamaha makes a hell of a durable product for sure.

    Being the port engine, it’s probably the counter rotator, which have a extra cog in the lower unit, to reverse the direction of final drive, so the prop spins opposite way to the starboard engine prop.
    It looks like it spat that extra cog out through the lower unit gear casing.
    That suggests maybe there was no oil in that lower unit!
    You’d expect with HP 80/90 gear oil to have seen a pretty big oil plume on the water where the engine went boom.
    I didn’t see that, which makes me question, did the mechanic servicing the motor maybe forget to top off that lower unit with gear oil?
    Pretty unusual to blow a lower unit in under 12 months on a new Yamaha OB like that without there being a causal factor like no oil.
    OMMV.

      i tought the same. Even when they lifted the engine up no oil on the water at all. I have let a few drops of oil hit the water and that was very visible allready. Imagine dumping 2quarts? of oil in there. And even when there is prettymuch no oil left, if you tilt it like that there wil stil be coming oil out of there. So i think you might be right, it might have run without oil

    • @sailorkid94
      @sailorkid94 6 років тому +1

      But one of the biggest points for two engines is redundancy. If you're 25+ miles off shore, VHF's don't have great range, if your radio does work you'll be waiting hours for towing, and EPIRB response is at minimum 3-6 hours after the plane spots you. Having a single engine offshore just isn't very comfortable. Albeit they weren't very far but it's still a factor.

    • @dancheesman1752
      @dancheesman1752 6 років тому

      sailorkid94 I do agree, but there are a lot of single engine commercial boats in the Northeast Canyons. Up here there are people in 20’ single screws fishing 20 miles off.

      at the moment i have a 20 hp suzuki as main engine and a 4 hp backupengine mounted on a bracket on the side.
      the 4 hp i use-test regularly when trolling, becouse it saves fuel compared to the 20 hp, but its also na safety in case somthing happend s to my main engine.
      20 hp is nothing compared to 2 x 300. hehe but i get enough speed with 20 on my 14 feet boat.
