Ok, if you saw it, the times were he became a different person, was only when life or death stress situations came. If you watch the series again, you will see all the time Jake showed up, Marc was in the thin line of being killed. My theory is, Marc only let Jake go(Who is the more violent personality inside him), when he saw no other way to win. In other words, when he knew he was going to die if he didn't go haywire. In other words, my guess, is that even though Khonshu was inside Marc or Steven, they held back because of the natural instinct of Khonshu. So, Jake was the only one personality who held nothing back and let khonshu have 100 percent control. And, if you think about it, it is the personality he does not even recognized as if it even exists precisely because of his violent behavior. So, in Marc's mind he doesn't exist, just his subconscience and his instinct to protect his life at all cost does. If that makes sense. So, if you think about i think it does.... I hope i helped a little at least for you to understand it better. Cheers guys!!!!
Steven, this is what understand. At the beginning neither Mark or Steven were aware of each other. When their mother died the wall between them started to come down until they died and accepted each other. In the red sarcophagus Jack was trapped and both Marc and Steven completely ignore it because they weren't aware of Jack's existence, even that he was present since the beginning. Jack is Khonsh's a atar and the others came for the ride, this is the reason why Marc was chosen, because the alter Jack. Jack is the real fist of vengeance.

I think Marc created Jake to deal with his more Violent tendencies and to deal with taking the abuse because even though Marc kills he seems to have a strict moral code when he has to do violent acts. Steven seems like the soft side, Marc seems like the middle of the three, and Jake is the harder more violent personality. Jake could have took the abuse and that's why he becomes more violent because of that situation.
I thought it was really weird that we saw Marc switch into Steven as a child, but Steven doesn’t remember how their mom truly was. It may be that Steven created Jake as a way to escape the abuse, and Jake was the one that grew up taking the punishment.

@@Comatose_Rat Neither of them do. Either of them could have unknowingly created Jake, as a biproduct of handling the emotional side of the abuse. Marc is protected, Steven masked the negatives, and then Jake handles it.

I really think Jake was created during his time in the military or as a mercenary. Maybe Marc was in a tough spot where he didn't have the stomach to do something bad to survive and that's when Jake manifested.
To answer the question of Steven not knowing the abuse, this is actually common in DID sufferers. To deal with abuse, a person with DID has to first imagine or create an alter that gets to live an idealistic, conflict-free version of "their lives" and the original suffers the abuse. Marc suffers the abuse and Steven is the idealised version fashioned after a favorite 90s movie character. So Marc knows and experiences all the abuse and runs into his mind to be Steven to block out the trauma. Later on, because of continued trauma and a growing attachment to escape reality, DID sufferers start to act out their alters and that's how the personality starts to "live in the real world." The series did a really great job at showing a realistic depiction of DID, which is not usually the case in Hollywood where they usually skip the conception phase for time or for dramatic effect. Same goes for the Jake alter, when people already suffering from DID experience an event that is too traumatic to ignore, an alter can be created tasked at doing the "dirty" job like attacking the abuser or protecting the other personalities, because the original feels like they are too weak or cowardly to do so. In the show, I suspect that Jake was created because Marc actually hates the cold-bloodedness of murdering somebody, so he creates an alter who has no qualms at doing that, making him a successful mercenary. As it delves deeper, a original can even lose control and not even be aware of other personalities that have been created. It's a truly fascinating but dark aspect of psychology/psychiatry.
When you say Jake was created because Marc hated the murdering, do you mean as Khonshu's avatar or from what he experienced in the military? Marc says in episode 5 that he went AWOL in a fugue state and was discharged so he became a mercenary. I thought maybe Jake was created in response to his experiences in the military, before he met Khonshu. It would make it a little more understandable how Marc hadn't really realized he was there as he would have been fairly new.
I could see it either way, but Marc didn’t seem to particularly mind his work with Konsshu. So probably what happened in the military was worse
@@thesithchef8760 I don't know about that. In Episode 5, Marc says every time he punished someone for Khonshu he hoped they'd kill him instead because working for Khonshu was a curse
@@srae1971 In the Lemire/Smallwood run of Moon Knight, it was a nonviolent episode shown when he went into a fugue state (stripped himself bare, wandered off to stare at the moon), but doesn't specifically tie into forming the other personalities. It was used there to indicate how his DID had been around his whole life. While the show would likely have its own interpretation, if it were to take from the aforementioned run I'm familiar with, it would indeed make sense that Marc's time as a soldier would form Jake.
@@srae1971 mark was in the military before konshu/mercenary stuff, and he said he was fired for going rogue "on a fugue state" so jake was there before Konshu. I think it's fair to assume that Jake showed up when Marc had to leave home and join the military/commit his first immoral actions

I think Jake was created from all the abuse Marc suffered from his mom. Which is why Jake is more violent. Jake was definitely the one who asked the lady out in the first episode.
I also think Jake may have popped out to kill the guys in the village and during the car chase in episode 1.

Here's my short theory:
Steve experienced the Love from his mom. Marc experienced the Verbal Abuse and Jake experienced the Physical Abuse from his mom.
Jake seems to be the manifestation of Marc's (or even Steven's) unconscious hunger for vengeance, which perfectly fits Konshu's need.
Marc is the Moon Knight, Steven is Mister Knight and Jake is literally Konshu's Fist of Vengeance (unrestrained willful violence)... I can picture Jake "waking up" at night, bringing retribution on anyone who treated badly either Marc or Steven during their "waking" lives, both unaware, until now, of this other persona... There could be good material for a second season in there...
According to the Moon Knight wiki which could be wrong. When Marc's mom came in the room, Marc took control back, which would make sense why he told Steven that he's not supposed to see the abuse. Because he never did

with DID you don't always remember when your alters are at the forefront and you don't always remember every single alter and it's clear Jake is keeping Marc and Steven from remembering him as he is the violent alter as a result of the abuse. his morals would align very much with khonsu for sure.
Well the whole thing with DID is an Alter has their own memories so to expect Marc & Steven to know certain memories about Jake doesn't make sense BECAUSE they all have different memories & life experiences. You can't just make an Alter remember something they didn't experience. Until they start to want to communicate with each other. So hopefully that's something we may go through if season 2 becomes a thing.
I mean...a system CAN share memories between alters if they think they can or do need to know something. But I assume that's something that needs to be done with a professional helping. But yeah, memories can be shared, technically.
Bit of explanation, Jake was created from Marcs abuse which is why he is the strongest and the most twisted and ruthless. He was his pain and it just made him stronger and Marc never realized he made him. Jake also killed the people from ep3. He's essentially a heartless killer badass with loose morals
i look at it like this. Marc as the true personality is somewhere in the middle. He created steven to be his good Innocent side, and his anger from the abuse he took created Jake as his Dark side.
@@Knightfang1 Well you look at it in a pretty toxic and reductive way. "true personality" not how it works. That is a valid if oversimplified version of how they started but it's important to note these alters are people, or have the same capacity for change that a person does. They have tendencies and are recessed to at different times but we don't have to go back to the 1980's versions of the disorder and undo the work the show did to understand them better.
Marc going back to save Steven was such a wholesome scene. That speech he did was so beautiful. Marc and Steven are better together. I love this show so much. The finale was very satisfying.
I didn't like it. For me, it symbolized that Marc was never ready to move on in the first place. Which makes me wonder why he had ended up in the Field of Reeds in the first place.
Steven is part of Marc... Marc just had to separate that part to protect it from the abuse.. he compartmentalised his innocence
The explanation I've heard from people with DID is that there will commonly be an alter/alters who is "present" for the abuse so the other alters don't experience it, but then that alter experiences delusions and doesn't recognize that the abuse took place or doesn't recognize what happened as abuse.
Steven was there to ESCAPE the abuse, so I think when his mom came in to beat him Steven went away. Jake was probably the one who was created to endure the abuse therefore he's a lot more damaged and willing to kill. Think Marc falls somewhere in the middle - still more violent than Steven, but not wanting to go to extremes. So yeah, in whatever next iteration of this story we get, I hope to see more of Jake in-action, and also Marc and Steven finding out about him!
I agree and think that the confusion (when Marc turns to Steven for the first time-in the bedroom) stems from the off screen switch from Steven back to Marc when the mom is in the room.
The other thing I think he was escaping was the guilt and shame. Steven didn't experience the abuse but also he wouldn't hurt a fly - unlike Marc who clearly saw himself as his brother's murderer and internalized what she had been saying.
If that's true, jake should have the most badass suit and absolutely destroy everybody in fights

That's not how did works.
Jake is Marc's rage from youth. He's the violent unstable killer. Steven is Marc's protector. Khonshu was well aware of Jake from the start. He set Marc "free" but he's dealing with Jake.
Marc and steven know there's something weird with the sudden black outs and dead bodies. Why they're still using the ankle restraint in their bed.

It is possible with DID for there to be alters that other alters are not aware of for different purposes.
However Marc and Steven both know they are blacking out and really violent things happening. They have not accepted there is another personality. The glitching transitions are definitely Jake and it shows that he can effortlessly take over without the other alters remembering. Clearly he is more in line with what Khonshu wants and so they fooled the other two for now that they are "free". It is really cool how they handled Jake without spelling it out 100%.
As for questions, Moon Knight always leaves questions and a bit of confusion. I am ok with that but I do want to see more of these characters. They are so good.

It was Jake who took the abuse, he's the violent, protector when the abuse started. Steven recalls the good times only. Both know there's a third personality that's why they're still tying themselves to the bed. Leaves open many possibilities for a 2nd season.

Steven wasn’t created to take the abuse he was created to save Marc’s innocence and shield a part of him away from the abuse Marc endured. I don’t believe Steven experienced any abuse. That’s why Marc said “You’re not supposed to see that, that’s the whole point of you.” Not sure if you missed that line from him. My theory is Marc took the abuse from him mom and Jake may have been created while Marc was in the military. (But he also could have been created to take more of the physical abuse from the mom) We know Marc is aware of both the emotional and physical abuse which makes me think Jake was created later.
He could have split off during the abuse, both taking turns protecting Steven from the abuse and the military made it worse.
DID is formed in childhood.

I think Steven and Jake were created at the same time - Steven to be the happy nerd and Jake to take all the abuse from mom year after year after year. I think all that abuse has pushed Jake to the extreme anger/violence path making him the perfect assassin for Khonshu.

I think there was a split second in that scene before they got their ass whooped in the last episode when Steven switched to Jake to take that, and all the other, beatings.
I also think the red standing sarcophagus remaining LOCKED was a deliberate choice - Marc/Steven aren't aware of Jake nor of what he's capable bc he's so angry/violent. That darkness remains locked away from both of them.
Saving the world w/o Khonshu == FANTASTIC QUESTION!!! Thing is, they get to keep doing that just w/out their knowledge bc Khonshu is playing WORD GAMES!! Both of them got released while Khonshu maintained an agreement w/their most willing alter - Jake likes killing and Khonshu needs a killer in the name of justice. Marc/Steven remain relatively unaware. Sneaky vulture indeed.
I didn't really get the feeling Marc and Steven wanted to save the world or be superheroes. I think they just want to go live their life without Khonshu.
Also, I think Nikki is spot on this time with why Steven doesn't recall the abuse. Marc created Steven as a coping alter, Steven simply blocks and ignores when the abuse happens, I think they've shown that when he calmly kept cleaning his room even as his mother broke down the door. Steven's mind simply doesn't register the abuse, which is why Marc created him. Steven tends to be a bit odd so it fits, he always called his mother even though it was always voicemail. Or when he took over Marc during their mother's funeral, he didn't even question that he's in Chicago instead of london, his mind simply blocks that out. That's my reading, anyways.

I understand what your husband meant about Steven being switched in when the mom beat them, but an alter can create another alter to protect themselves inside and out when also stressed or threatened. Steven couldve created Jake to take the hits and has no recollection of the abuse, or Steven couldve switched himself back to Marc (so Steven has no recollection of the abuse) and in the process Marc blacking out during the beatings while creating Jake. Believe it or not during constant severe abuse especially physical and sexual abuse, multiple alters can be created to absorb what a new alter cant handle and the mind will keep creating amnesia fragments (alters) to protect itself. Alters can block (Aka blackouts) what other alters have access to in their part of the fragment or when they front (take over body) or share what they see or do while others sorta backseat. So its possible they dont know theres another alter or how many alters there are, some people can make up to 100+ Every system (mind) is different. This is what I thought of what couldve possibly happened in creation of the Jake alter.

I'm not judging this by episodes... I'm judging the entire series as one. This show could've easily been in theaters and would've done well. Phenomenal acting from Oscar Isaac and Excellent writing and directing.🏆
From what I learned about Jake, he is the most violent of the 3 personas, The abuse that Marc couldn't take he gave to Steven, and the the pain that Steven and Marc couldn't take became Jake. So it sort of goes like this:
Steven will try to disable you, hence his batons.
Marc will kill you if necessary, but still try to disable you.
Jake will straight up just unalive you.
His persona is also that of a cabby, a taxi driver. So he's multilingual.

i think that Marc created Steven to protect himself against the emotional pain. Jake Lockley was created for the physical pain whenever the mother abused him, Marc or Steven would change to him.
edit: specifically i think Steven was made from Marc's guilt and want to be a different person than he was.
While Jake was made for Marc's pain, he was made to take the punches which would explain why he's so brutal

I think you're on the right track.
Marc's home life was a Russian nesting doll of trauma. The emotional abuse caused Marc to retreat into Steven. So Marc was never present for the abuse... but Steven did the same and retreated into Jake.
The entire time, there's been bleed through, between the identities... so I don't think the wall between Marc and Jake is all that solid. Remember, Marc was kind of aware of Jake's time in Harrow's office (did you inject me with something? Or, "wow, those drugs are a trip"... but Jake just hasn't bled through as completely as Steven did by the time the started to integrate.
Which also would explain why Jake is the monster of the group... because he had to shoulder both the emotional and physical abuse
I think Jake is supposed to represent what marc feels that he’s become, whilst Steven is supposed to represent what he wants to be. Marc feels that he’s undeserving of love, and feels that he’s undeserving of peace, furthermore he believes that he’s just a killer, which Jack lockly is.

I think when it showed young Steven about to get smacked from the mother, he must've blacked out/transition to the 3rd alter aka Jake to take the abuse that's why Steven has no recollection of that memory and why Jake is the way he is.
I love how they showed Marc/Steven’s heart is full between the two of them and then at the end you meet Jake… if Marc and Steven have half a heart each then that would indicate that Jake doesn’t have one at all.
Steven didn't have the bad memories, he was only created at that point in the room. Subsequent abuse was buried by Marc. He only found out about his brother and his abuse from his mother when he was on Tawaret's boat. He was as shocked as we were because the memories only resurfaced at that point. Keep going guys, I love you both and your reactions.
I'm pretty sure that Jake was the one who endured their mother's abuse. To be able to successfully protect Marc and Steven, he had to be able to completely isolate them whenever he had control. He still comes out when they need protection, such as when both Marc and Steven were knocked out in the middle of the fight with Harrow's minions in the street, and when Harrow was about to kill Marc in the final battle.
Now the problem is, that since it is the body which is technically Khonshu's avatar, both Steven and Marc are still Moon Knight, they just don't know it. If either of them suffer a serious injury Khonshu's scheme will be blown when they discover they still heal.

My guess is that in the future--in Blade, Midnight Sons, West Coast Avengers, The Avengers: Secret Wars, or wherever--just like the mother's death caused Marc to lose some control over when the Steven alter appeared, there will be another trigger event that will cause Jake to not always be able to keep Marc and Steven at bay, so they will all be Moon Knight again.

I think the best way to explain it (it being how "alters" work) is to learn how "alters" work. Episode 5 was a perfect explanation and awareness of it I believe, but if there are some parts you don't quite understand then the best thing for you to do is probably to read up on D.I.D. instead of waiting for a next season. Some people with D.I.D. also have this "alter" called a protector, that might clear some stuff up for you as well, I hope this helps in understanding anything you had questions about! I enjoyed seeing you both on this journey through the show with us and I can't wait for the next adventure
Nikki asked how did Marc balance when Steven went overboard if there's a third alter. I think you guys answered your own question. If the 3rd alter was created by Steven to deal with the mom abuse, then that alter went overboard with Steven allowing Marc to balance the scales.
I don't think that's it, I think the scales balancing has everything to do with the emotional journey they were on on that boat, and nothing to do with whether or not there were alters.
@@SeeAndDreamify you may be right, but the scales didn't balance when Steven and Marc resolved the emotional journey they were on. The scales came into balance the very second that Steven died. I don't think that was coincidence. And if the third alter didn't die with Steven, I don't think the scales would've balanced for Marc.
Good theory; when Steven went overboard, he took the 3rd personality with him, so that's why Marc balanced.
I think May Calamawy deserves some praise for her acting in this finale

Mark/Steven still bind themselves to the bed because they know there is a third personality and they don't want to risk switching to him and killing people. Khonshu released them ''both'', meaning Mark and Steven, because he knew there is a third personality of which Mark/Steven know that he exists but they don't know what he's called and where he came from or how to switch to him. So Khonshu basically made Mark/Steven believe they were finally free while making/keeping them AND Jake as his Moon Knight. But only Jake knows that he's still the Moon Knight while Mark/Steven think they are free. So if there is a second season, I can see it play out basically the same as this season but instead of Steven finding out about Mark being Moon Knight and them accepting each other, not both Steven and Mark will find out about Jake being there and him being Moon Knight.
@@katv1195 Interesting, you could see it that way too yes. But I think they really do bind themselves, like Steven bound himself because of hin fear of Mark coming out at the start of the show. Because Steven binds himself but also unbinds himself and lives his daily life in the museum. That's not all inside his and Marks mind.
Marc protects. Steven is an optimist and ignores. Jake is the fighter who attacks. So Steven came out when Marc hid from mom, before and after beatings. But Jake is the one who took the beatings fought back after the beatings. I just can't decide if Marc or Jake took the beatings. If it was Jake he may have even enjoyed the beatings.
It's so much fun to watch people's reactions to the finale of MK. It was an awesome show. Can't wait for season two.
Most kickass stuff in the show was all Layla second she came on till the end and DOMINATES with the coolest costume. She out Avatar-ed protagonist. AND ANTagonist, in two minutes,, Queen laid everyons since she Sarah Conner-ed that thing rt away. Can NOT be denied.

According to the director, the third personality, Jake, was not the one with the bandage on the nose. We never see Jake until the after credit scene, he appeared twice but both times we didnt see what happened. Once was in episode 3 and of course the other in this episode.

There is an older made for TV film that Sally Fields did called "Sybil" that I recall seeing that revolves around DID. It's been years, but I remember it being pretty striking. I was hoping the wiki on it would mention how accurate it's held to be now, but after watching Moon Knight it might be a good one to look for. It got a Golden Globe at the time.

Jake IS the personality taking the abuse. This is a mental story. Many psychotic individuals was created as a result of being abused which is what they'd hope the viewers would pick up. It ended perfectly and left room for a second season. Cannot wait!

I rewatched last episode many times because I was also confused that we see Steven being created followed by his mother’s abuse, so why doesn’t Steven know of it???? It was confusing how they shot it but if you look at it again, the MOMENT his Mom burst into the room he actually switches back to Marc (or Jake) he doesn’t do they eye-roll thing but you can see him take like a deep breath and change back as he’s putting his pens and pencils away.
The next scene the mom is saying “he’s gonna learn a lesson” and Marc or Jake is bracing themselves.
I don’t think Jake is manifested at this point tho. I think Marc is taking all of the mental/physical abuse and tries to contain his anger/frustration, ignore it and push it away, eventually leading it to manifest a personality of its own hidden from the others?

Mark switched into Steven before his mom came in, trying to clean the room before she came in.
Steven pretends the mom wasn’t like that. Remember the whole time he was talking into the phone thinking he was talking to his mom when in actuality it was just the disconnected sound.
If either Marc or Steven created Jake as a "final stop" of sorts, to handle the violence and rage of the abuse that he went through...then the persona you have to feel for the most...is Jake. Marc was blind to the pain and Steven masked it himself. But it's Jake who truly had to actually DEAL with it. This is why he's the more dangerously screwed up of the three. Pain is all that persona has ever known. So yeah, he's as violent and ruthless as one can get. And I feel like neither Marc nor Steven knows when Jake takes over, because of that primary function of protecting Marc from trauma. It's a vicious cycle. I doubt his scales will ever be balanced.

Nikki, I love your heartfelt reactions. Steven, I think your questions are emotionally intelligent. What is Jake Lockley's role in the "system," which is what people with D.I.D call themselves. Was Jake taking the beatings from their mother? We already know that Jake is a killer, but his relationship to Steven and Marc? I'm as curious about this as your are and I hope the next season fleshes more of the story between these personalities.
I think that Jake was unconsciously made by Marc to take all the physical and emotional pain, and acts as a defense mechanism for whenever Steven and/or Marc are in danger and Layla as well 🤔.

I think Steven is sort of a substitute little brother. Not replacing the brother he lost, but letting Marc keep the role of big brother protector. It will be interesting to see how Jake fits into the “family”. Hope we get a season 2.

I think as a origin story to Moon Knight and to Marc it was fantastic, it set up motivations, the whole multiple personality disorder angle and some of the powers and even wrap up the whole Ammit and Arthur evil scheme, only stuff not explain was mainly the third personality stuff which felt intentional, maybe teasing a movie sequel or even season 2 which also makes me glad they wrap up the whole Ammit plot so we can focus on the Third personality if a sequel ever does happen, anyways love moon knight love his back story, super relatable and as a American-Latino I'm glad we finally have a cool dark super hero we can look up to, anyways really hope moon knight's story continues

27:00 Notice in episode 5 when Steven is created; it's not when Marc is being beaten by his mom, it's before that when his mom is causing him mental trauma by yelling at Marc and banging on his door. Then Steven says "I want to see what she did" and Marc drags him out of the room saying "You're not meant to see that, that's the whole point of you". Marc is literally explaining why Steven was created. Further proof of this is later in episode 5 when Steven takes over while Marc is having a severe breakdown during his moms funeral. Steven is the substitute for Marc's metal trauma, and Jake is the substitute for his physical trauma.
I love the fact that not everything is explained directly in Moon Knight, but that you have to really pay attention as a viewer. It's definitively a series that's worth watching twice.

Since Jake is still a part of Marc, sharing the same body with Marc and Steven, that body still belongs to Khonshu. This is WHY we see Marc and Steven, operating together in the London flat, ending the season the same way the season began, STILL CHAINED TO THE BED BECAUSE THEY MUST KNOW THERE IS A THIRD ALTER THAT IS LEAVING THEM WITH BLANK SPOTS IN THEIR MEMORY.
For me, just like the question of why was Jake created, I find this method of story-telling--showing but not telling to an extreme--is fucking brilliant. It's beautiful, original, and fun to look for the clues and piece it together. They are not relying on the audience being stupid. THANK YOU, WRITERS.
Khonshu only agreed to free Marc and Steven but never agreed to release all alters of the being/body. Technically, Moon Knight is alive and well but it’ll be a film or television show or season 2 to explain. And as Khonshu cleverly implied at the end, they are actually still attached to him. In the comics, they eventually were aware of all alters and came to challenge the gods power over them and yet retained their powers.
I don’t think Khonshu has actually disconnected from Marc/Steven. He is just letting them think that as he works his will through the Jake personality

hey it's fun to see your reactions. The way DID works is that when one personality is in control the others are not aware of what's happening - this means when Steven is not in control he will not remember anything. In this way you don't need to ask why Steven doesn't remember certain things such as abuse and other important events because he was suppressed for that time - he was intentionally hidden away to be protected so that he will have different memories or will not have the bad memories which are the real memories - Steven is protected and so he keeps the good memories. Many of the events we saw is consistent with this all the way from episode 1 in the car chase etc when Steven would black out. In the bedroom upstairs we see Steven cleaning up or whatever but he is unaware of the mom pounding on the door, this is just to depict that he is not aware of any peril or any pending trauma - when the abuse happens he will not be present, somebody else will be taking over either Marc or the other guy and they will take the abuse. I'm no expert and also let's see if this comment makes it through 😊
I think they both decided to do Stevens trick with the bed after the Harrow blackout realizing there was someone else they didn't know about with them. And I think the bed scene where Mark trips is after Jake kills Harrow.
