Tip: Jet lag truly hits me hard if I'm going long distances, across time zones, & don't take the first day in the new country to relax at my home base. I usually take the first day to chill out at the hotel & do minimul exercise. I go to a spa (or a more budget conscious option take a bubble bath, eat room service, stay in with a mask watching netflix etc.) or something equally relaxing before I adventure out & demand more out of my body. I find if I don't it impacts my health during my stay & my body just rebels. it can make for a truly miserable experience.
I actually really enjoy that you spoke about how unwell you were, it made it feel much more personal! People get sick sometimes, and are fully in their right to talk about how they feel, & I think it's great you you tried to chug along as best as you could :')
Lizzy, you put out fantastic content that never gets old--I'm so glad to have found your channel a few months back! I've been nostalgically watching these after visiting Japan in January, and after a few clips I realized that we stayed in the same hotel! Thanks for lugging your gear around so you could share these memories.
Don't feel badly about talking about feeling ill. Everything doesn't go perfectly when you travel and when you're alone and feeling unwell those feelings can be magnified. I really appreciate you being honest!
I was laying in bed with my wife, who watches your videos. And I was awaken by Limerence - Yves Tumor as your intro song. I’ve loved that song for a few years now and never heard it used anywhere, and no one seems to know about it.
great vlogs, such a pleasure to watch. your vlogs always have the best atmosphere, so combination of you and Japan is the best. sorry to see that you've been so tired for most of the trip. I think when travelling that far, it's fair to stay at least 10 days and don't plan much for the first two days and take them as time for adjustment
I read that book last year. It is harrowing but I am glad that I read it. It is so well written, the main character is so profound and the book stays in my thoughts in a good way.
Lizzy I love these vlogs. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I do imagine there is a Japanese mood going through them. And the font you’ve selected fits perfect into this mood. These vlogs feel very unique.
Your vlogs are very enjoyable for someone like me that lived in Japan for a while. Since you vlog the random bits I all takes me back. The sounds, the backs of her people.. it's really nice. Also to see all these things and see your reaction as a first timer to it. I cracked up so much about your reaction in the Donkihote ... that store is so insane. Thank you. Now I am a bit "home sick".
when I went to Japan(from Europe), I was lucky to be there for like 3 weeks, but I had jetlag for *one whole week* it was _terrible_ as you mentioned, there is so much out there to discover! I love these vlogs Lizzy!! thank you so much for sharing them, you really captured Japan so so perfectly
Loved it! I feel you on feeling miserable on a trip, I spent weeks in europe coughing and dying and being annoyed at myself, but seeing and experiencing new things was worth it. Thanks for sharing! It made me excited to travel alone now.
Really enjoyed this vlog! I travelled to Tokyo last year and it was my first time visited Japan. Amazed at the quietness of Tokyo as you do. For the Harajuku girls, it may be better to go to that street in summer. There’s a very good vintage handbag shop in Daikanyama called Hedy which I think would be a nice shop to go. :)
Hi Lizzy 😊 The office where I work locates very close to where you've staied. Pity that we didn't bump 😂 funny but happy to see you in my territory. Hope you come back soon to jp 🤗
If you were Asian, you’d be wearing a face mask the whole time you were there. I’ve been sick while traveling, it’s not fun. I’ve had to make the decision of doing less each day, so I could keep going. Next time, chicken soup/ramen for every meal would have been a big help to your cold. Also ginger tea. You seemed to have navigated the city very well. Their subway is something I know I’d want to be prepared for.
i am loving these vlogs Lizzy. As for the jetlag, i think it can be worse depending on the direction you go. I am fine with south east asia, but when i went to south korea, it was hell during and even after i came back. Loving the more cultural side of things and the way you share you experience of travelling in Japan. Did you check out Japanese skincare stores ?
The general rule (I believe) is if you lengthen your day, it's worse. I.E when you do a long haul flight and the time difference is in your favour, so you land about three hours after you took off, that is meant to be easier to manage. So coming home hasn't been as bad for me! I went to a couple of beauty shops but didn't buy very much! xx
Oh my so much fun Lizzy...sorry you were unwell for parts of it. Its probably that whole thing of how the body responds when you are on holiday. All the allergies appear outta nowhere! Japan has been on wish forever so this has been lush to watch. Also bought the book you recommended from Insta for my brother's xmas gift as he has been a couple times and going back for his honeymoon. I'm soooooo going!!!....One day 😊
Thank you Abi! It was so frustrating to feel ill when I was there, but like you said sometimes you just have to listen to what your body is saying to you! the book is gorgeous isn't it, Monocle's current issue is also Japan based so that is another recommendation! xx
@@LizzyHadfield I'm wondering how cheeky it would be to carefully read the book I bought as a gift before I wrap it? 👀😅. By the way your solo travel experience was spot on with pros and cons...been there etc etc. Also...if you havnt already pls try this tea for pre/post 'this cold wont budge'. Does the trick...worth a try. www.amazon.co.uk/Dr-Stuarts-Echinacea-Plus-Herbal/dp/B003GZEN90/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=Dr+Stuarts+Echinacea+Plus&qid=1576429597&sr=8-7
The Harajuku girls that you were looking for, is on a square I think, and I think it's happening only once a week (Sunday if I remember correct). Then all these kids put on their costumes and meet up at this spot. Feel you on the jet lag. I always get like that when I travel to another time zone. Feels like I'm really ill. But I think that's how hard jet lag can actually be. I just go to bed super early and then I depend on lots of caffeine and pain killers to get through it.
Loving these vlogs, thank you so much. It’s making me want to go to Japan and I don’t even have a passport. Sorry you felt so crap but these were brilliant x
👌👌 well I can honestly say Im very glad you looking after yourself pease make sure you drink plenty of water. I really liked the open air museum I’ve never seen anything quite like that too waiting patiently for next part 🌸💖
I can totally relate with your jetlag. My husband feels terrible whenever we fly there, he needs at least 2 weeks to get over it. At first he thought he's sick but it was just jetlag. Good thing we always stay in Japan for 3 months :-) Sorry about your Harajuku experience. Harajuku is actually for much younger people. Also maybe it was too cold that day, that's why no young people hanging out on the bridge. You should have gone to Akihabara, there you'll see young hip people just standing on the side of the street. Maybe go there in summer, you'll see lots of them ;-)
About Harajuku- from what I know the "Harajuku Girls" culture for what it was some time ago- now it's more posing for social media, visiting cafes and stuff like that, but in cute clothes. Also not so crazy like it was before, again, because of social media. Maybe what you saw on videos was something like "Harajuku walk" that happens once a month.
god I reallllly struggled with jetlag big time when I went to Japan, couldn't do anything for two days really and we fell asleep in a park because we were so tired pre airbnb check in. It's killer!
You should be sure to go to Kamakura-has best Buddha in Japan (Daibutsu) -outdoors and there are many charming temples and shrines (e.g. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu). Wish you had a coffee get together so your viewers in Japan would have a chance to meet you.
Simona Holban I agree - I was so against them for years, then was given one as a gift and it changed my life. So much easier to fit reading in spontaneously when there’s no concern about the heft of a big book!
I get that kind of jet lag going to Tokyo... whether I come West bound from the east coast or east bound from London... it lifts overnight on day 4/5 and I wake up on day 5 for feeling normal
I have really enjoyed your Japan vlogs. Such lovely, thoughtful content. Two thoughts: 1) You have a viral illness, not jet lag. I seldom experience jet lag going east; going west is worse LOL. 2) I have not and now will not read A Little Life. I have just read a Flemish book of 550 pages of unrelenting catastrophic misery (from a well known author whose work I really enjoyed previously) and really, what's the point? It loses its potency when it's so one sided, really. Thanks for healing my FOMO LOL!!
Feel you on the jetlag lizzie. Flew from uk to tokyo with a 12 hr layover in Istanbul a few months back and felt awful for days. Luckily I had some xanax so they helped for sleep 😆 I really like the sleveless knit btw. Its so hard not to buy loads in Japan because everything is so different to what we have back home.
After hearing you talk about A Little Life I went to read the synopsis on Wikipedia...and omg I think I would be suicidal after reading something like that. Don't know how you managed. 814 pages of misery it seems like!
I think you had coronavirus whilst you were in Tokyo. You had a mild version of it because you're young. You probably caught it in the airport arriving. As there are a lot of Chinese tourists in Japan and I don't think Japan had closed its borders to the Chinese yet. Thanks for your vlogs in Japan. I'm a big fan of the country been 4 times. Indeed, the jetlag is a killer (I'm a lot older than you;_)
I had the same questions about A Little Life. Suffering porn. Beautifully written but I'm not sure what the point was. Loving your vlogs. Now I want to go to Tokyo!
Agreed. I actually stopped reading the book with about only 80 pages left because I was like f*ck this. I slowly realized that it was tragedy porn and became frustrated with the writer.
I think if your body needs sleep give it what it wants. Think you pushed yourself way too hard, you are allowed to go back and see the things you missed. The vlog was nice though.
Hi Lizzie, I am loving this, you are doing a great job! Can you tell me about the high neck cream knit that you purchased? I love the fit and I have been looking for something just like that one! Thanks!
A Little Life was really disappointing to me as well. It's compelling enough to get you heavily committed before it becomes clear that it's just tragedy porn, (well put below by Lilah)
such a shame you got such bad jet lag / sickness while on this leg of the trip. i went to Japan 2 years ago (from Canada) and experienced little to no jet lag surprisingly! maybe because it's almost a full day ahead. just had general exhaustion from travelling for 12+ hours the first day but was fine the rest of the time! loved seeing all the spots you got to hit up, and god, that view of Mt Fuji is gorgeous! getting major FOMO and wanting to travel there again next year. one thing i hope you got to experience or might have helped with jetlag was the hot saunas/baths - there was one in the hotel i was staying at in Kyoto and it was the best part of the trip! cured any soreness i had from walking all day & bathing in the nude in a foreign country is a bit exhilarating for sure. love all your videos Lizzy! PS did no one else catch the "almond covered chocolates" part while shopping in the sweets shop?
Why is this vlog screaming Coronavirus 😟 I’m coming through the end of a positive diagnosis and it is such an up and down illness and worse in the evenings.
that sleeveless knit would look amazing with an oversized white shirt
samia mubarak I was thinking a striped shirt. Definitely something with cuffs and a collar.
Was thinking the same thing x
Yesss
yesss! the lady in the shop was wearing it like that and It looked so so good! xx
Can you post a link for the sleeveless sweater?
Enjoyed every second of this vlog. Japan looks absolutely gorgeous. Can't wait for the third video, love!
Thank you so much!! xx
