Thomas Drance from The Athletic and Sportsnet 650 joined the guys and talked about how Hronek came across yesterday, Elias Pettersson battling and more.
Building a stanley cup winner takes time. You dont walk into a job and win a cup unless you just became the GM of a contender. The Canucks are on the right path. They have a great core and with some time and development maybe Lekkermaki and Willander become very good players for the Canucks. If you add these two to the core and add a few more pieces, this will be a very good hockey team. The future is bright, and with Allvin and Rutherford steering the ship, I believe they have a chance at bringing a cup to Vancouver in the future.
I think the Canucks management were hoping that someone on the farm could step in next year to replace some UFAs they cannot sign. The cupboard is bare. My half cup full says Canucks will be 10-12 points shy of this year.
People seem to be ignoring that the Canucks are in one of the better cap situations in the NHL as of today on May 24th. Based on historical performance we should expect a Jim Rutherford organization to improve this situation by July 1.
@@Jingling-MelO If their cap hit is league min + $375k or less, then it goes straight off the books. Anything above that counts against the cap. Currently that means $1.15M, so the Oilers get a cap hit of $3.85M for Campbell in his current state for the next three years if they keep him in the minors. Much more likely they buy him out when the next window shows up, which will have him on cap hits for the next three seasons of $1.1M, 2.3M, and 2.6M respectively, and then $1.5M for the three seasons after that.
What annoyed me is that people blamed Patterson and Drance for asking him these questions. We've had issues as fans with the Canucks in general in the past prior to Rutherford and Co being forthcoming with fans about the direction of things as the team floundered. Now the media asks questions that fans actually care about and they're upset. Hronek is an important part of the team and his 2nd half decline into the playoffs is a significant issue, especially if it wasn't injury related, and he wants over 8 million on a long term deal. I'd want to know as a fan that if I'm investing my money in the team in any way that these millionaires are committed to the team or that management is going to make sure they don't leave for nothing and that the cap is managed properly so that there's a competitive team on the ice. The media's job is to ask those tough questions, not act like the rest of the media and do interviews over tea and crumpets as they cruise around in a limo with powerful people. The media aren't supposed to be friends with the people they're interviewing. Their job is to provide the public with information. I don't care if some grouchy millionaire doesn't like it. It's a privilege to play in the NHL.
Every offseason in Vancouver is a tricky offseason to manage, but at least this time there is some success to build on. I really hope that after so many years of having one of the worst bluelines in the NHL, the Canucks don't move on from their big defencemen to pivot towards offence. I fully expect Team Ruhterford to do some unexpected moves, because that's what they do. Bringing home Malhotra is just a start and it looks like things are again headed in the right direction.
Ya Drance has it correct, the Canucks management are going to have their hands full just trying to be as good next year as they were this year. They are going to be hamstringed by the evil cap monster. The players everyone wants to come back are probably not coming back because they just can't afford them. Most if not all of Hronek, Joshua, Big Z, and Lindy will not be back due to the fact they are all wanting big raises. Not going to happen, my guess is Joshua may be the only one coming back. We will see what kind of offers he gets from other teams, most likely way more than the Canucks will offer. I expect a lot of changes and the team will likely be hard pressed to even make the playoffs next year, contrary to all the pom pom shaking enthusiasm from this successful year. I predicted the Canucks would make the playoffs easily when i seen what management put together. I will reserve my predictions for next season until i see what they do in the off season. So far this management team has been very good, so my hat is off to them. Great job.
Hronek to me will be traded I do believe. His performance in the playoffs didn't make me happy due to going for dangerous checks at bad times or not taking people in front of the net. I believe we could find someone else who could do a better at checking than he showed.

If his knee was already sore before the ASB, he should have stayed in Vancouver to rest and recuperate, not participate in a useless boring weekend of crap to jump thru hoops for the league.
Paterson is awful. It is not limited to his one question on exit interviews. Players don’t forget what is said by reporters day in and day out (whether about them or their teammates). Again, Paterson is awful and I struggle to see how he remains employed (mind you, he seems to change who he’s employed with, regularly). Another reason I wouldn’t pay for the Athletic. I didn’t like Drance either, until this season. He has improved. His negativity was gross. As a hockey reporter, Jeff doesn’t understand the game; hence why he asks the questions he does. His questions are about as relevant as he is to the market. The players don’t like him either, that much is obvious.
If Hronek can't understand what playing with Quinn Hughes has done for HIS career, then, he's too stupid to be a player on a winning team anyway. He has to MAN UP, admit how LUCKY he is to be 'here, now, paired with this guy', and accept a salary that doesn't screw the team out of its salary structure or competitiveness. IF he can't do that, let him walk. He's already acting like an A-hole to J.Pat and other reporters, insists he couldn't "figure out" why his 2nd half was so poor; then let him BRING THAT attitude to the arbitration hearing.
Nah brah. Patterson is very fair. He's somewhat long winded which helps for filling air time, but he's very fair. He did go hard in the paint on Hronek. Maybe a little too hard. I'd rather too much pressure than the "you have holidays" the media gave Hronek for a year before he got pissy.
Best defenceman on the planet? Not too sure about that. Bouchard just crushed him in a 7 game series. Got owned physically in his own zone for two rounds. Over a point a game player who halved that production when it got heavy out there.
Simply landing a Hronek interview would be a legendary achievement.
The funny thing is that people think Alvine gives 2 flying f's what Hronik said in an interview
