Crazy how I just picked this game off the shelf at gamestop just because the name sounded cool. Never expected it to be so amazing. AND THANK YOU for ranking that annoying deer bottom. PS2 version I beat it quickly but on my ps5 it just wouldn't react. My favorites were Dirge, Pelagia, Argus, and Kuromori. Kuromori has such a creepy theme. Overall, surprised out how well a majority of the fights held up over 17 years.
Great video, Guys! Shadow of the Colossus is one of the most unique and hauntingly beautiful video game experiences out there, and it's definitely among my favorite PS2 games, alongside Snake Eater and Odin Sphere (although the PS4 remaster, Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, is the one I actually played in this case). I only ever played the original PS2 edition, so here's my boss ranking for that version: 16. Celosia 15. Basaran 14. Hydrus 13. Phaedra 12. Cenobia 11. Quadratus 10. Pelagia 9. Valus 8. Barba 7. Malus 6. Argus 5. Kuromori 4. Dirge 3. Avion 2. Gaius 1. Phalanx The OST for this game is incredible, and my personal favorite track is "Demise of the Ritual." It's such a somber, devastating theme that truly drives home the tragic, hopeless nature of your quest and the fact that the Colossi are not what they seem. I'd say it's my second favorite final boss theme behind "Dancing Mad" from Final Fantasy VI. Anyway, I enjoy your content as always and look forward to your next upload.
For me, the best boss fight in this game is the second last one. I like the ways you bait him into helping you on to his back, the environment you fight him in, and not to mention his AWESOME intro and appearance. Can you tell I like him a lot? Though Hydrus is probably my favorite colossus, the second-last guy is my favorite fight.
I too have enjoyed this game. Mainly because the collossi dont just look giant they FEEL giant. its been awhile since i commented on your vids but hi guys again good to see your growth. youve earned it. Loved the Elden Ring videos
Phaedra is super easy. the concept is to get him to walk towards the hole you want him to stand over by standing directly above it and firing arrows at him, then going down as he gets close to you. then I walk to the opposite hole in the tunnel and come out, and wait forever for him to do his thing and finally crouch down to give you the opening. I do it the same way every time and get the exact same results.
Overall great ranking, liked that you apreciated bosses like Dirge, Avion and Kuromori, though I dont understand why Hydrus is so low or the hate for Phaedra, also I think there is no such thing as a bad boss in shadow of the colossus, all are very good, itd be very hard for me to rank them, masterpiece of boss design.
I just saw this on my recommended and was like "why not watch it" this was amazing and I'm surprised you guys don't have more subs! I know I am one now!
Calming until you get to the bridge at the end where you need Argo to jump over it at least, lol. I must have died there 5 or 6 times at least. Was broiling with fury at the weird camera angle change -Alex
I could be a weenie, but any of the battles where I had to turn my back on the Colossi always scared me to death. Although we all have our opinions about what boss is which, I think this is a great video!
I hope for the day a spiritual successor comes for that focuses more on the... living side of the beasts. Præy is fun and all, but they looked too much like a closet of skeletons.
Even though I've never played this game the water fights scare the shit out of me. With land fights you have a decent sense of control. But in the water you're basically praying that whatever attacks you doesn't kill you slowly.
Wow. I forgot that the colossus has names. When I remember this game, I say something along the lines of "fighting a flying bunch of sausages was cool" A nice list, although I personally am a fan of Pelagia.
The names aren’t actually official, just widely accepted and used by players. Makes total sense that if you hadn’t been around the online community for this game much there’s not a way you’d be able to know em’ -Alex
Shadow of the Colossus - My Ranking of Every Bosses from Worst to Best: 16)Celosia 15)Hydrus 14)Basaran 13)Cenobia 12)Quadratus 11)Barba 10)Phaedra 9)Argus 8)Valus 7)Dirge 6)Kuromori 5)Malus 4)Pelagia 3)Gaius 2)Avion 1)Phalanx
Couldn't disagree more with this list. My own personal list would be: 16. Pelagia - Although it has a really cool mechanic of controlling the colossus, it's a pain in the a* swimming around it to grab it's back, especially when you fall into the water again after being hit, it's really painful and slow process. 15. Basaran - We all know why. Making it get on the spot above the geysers can be a real pain, and suffering a hit from Basaran can be fatal really fast keeping you passing out. 14. Hydrus - This colossus is one of the coolest imo, it's only ranked this low because of the repetitive process that's also slow. 13. Kuromori - This colossus can be very hard, aiming the legs even harder, but unlike other colossi, this one is about speed. Forcing the player to jump from one of the floors to hit her before she wakes up, even if that costs half their HP is a nice challenge. 12. Phaedra - The process of waiting the colossus can be really slow. Playing this colossus again is kinda boring because you know what to do, but when you fight it the first time seeing the colossus confused and searching for you is really cool and sinister. 11. Quadratus - Although he's iconic, aiming his feet is kinda hard sometimes. That's all, I don't see that much special on him, except for the music, here Opened Way plays the first time. Also, we have a really open field here, another thing that bugs me is that we have a really open field here but Agro has no use. Something that would be great to right on the second colossus. 10. Celosia - This colossus makes the player think outside the box, it has reminiscences of the first game ICO, since the torch plays a big role in that game. This colossus shows the player again that in order to beat the game you will need to pay a lot more attention to the environment rather than the colossi themselves. 9. Barba - I think this colossus is a lot harder and more aggressive than Argus. My only complaint is that his battlefield is really small, your two points of option are hidden or on him. There's not much movement around. 8. Dirge - One of the best uses of agro in the game, only behind Phalanx. His death screen is genuinely scary, and it's really intuitive of what you have to do once you fight him and see his big eyes behind you. 7. Valus - We all know he is the ICONIC colossus of this game, and his entrance is magnificent, but he's only an intro of how incredible the colossi of this game can be. 6. Cenobia - This colossus has one of the coolest mechanics in the game. It forces you to move around the field and fast. The score is absolutely frenetic. The armor of Cenobia is magnificent, and even though you play this game a thousand times you know you can't kid with Cenobia, otherwise you're probably dead. 5. Gaius - Fighting this colossus from above and seeing all the forbidden lands is really cool. Also it has one of the hardest time attacks in the game, and most definitely one of the best death scenes. 4. Argus - This colossus is a pain, but a good pain. It takes all of the elements of the other colossus and makes you progressively grow learning your enemy in the fight. 3. Malus - The pinnacle of this game OST imo, his soundtrack is menacing, it's like the game telling you that what you are doing is wrong, but you can't stop after what happened with Agro. The problem with this colossus is that despite all of the scenario soundtrack and all he's really easy to beat once you get under him. It's straightforward. 2. Phalanx - BRO YOU'RE USING AGRO TO JUMP ON A COLOSSUS ABOUT TO FLY THAT'S COOL AF. This colossus is definitely the most beautiful and enigmatic, feels like killing an angel. The only downpoint is that once you get on him you probably will need to climb again because of the shells, the shells make no sense. Going straight into the ground would be better. 1. Avion - This colossus is an experience, it makes you feel anxious, makes you let go of your comfortable zone to recharge stamina, and once you're on him you can finish without needing to restart the process. Not my favorite colossus, but the best by far.
there’s an obvious sort of categorical structure to these bosses, in no universe is like Cenobia better than Malus, Gaius etc. thanks for watching - jack

Hahahahahaha wow I used to beat phaedra by waiting in the cave till he ducks his head and jumping on his ....beard. I never knew to run through the caves and jump on his back wow lol
16:03 I’m sorry to say but that is false. You can kill Kuromuri in one cycle with good enough timing, even without time attack items or extra health/stamina from repeated playthroughs
Jack played on hard mode, where I’m pretty sure you can’t do that. The footage is mine (on normal mode) and not his so the gameplay shown wasn’t actually 100% his experience with the game. But yeah, if you just instantly jump down all the way you can definitely do it without needing to do anything too hard like with 1-cycling Dirge -Alex
That was one of my least favorite bosses for the ps2 (haven't played the new version). Not in terms of difficulty. It's just visually one of the least impressive bosses and the strategy on it's relatively lame. I played it back in 2008 though. I would have never thought anyone would rank that one in their top 5. Most reviews have that one ranked in the back and rightfully so.
The dude hosting this video said that Kuromori was one of the only bosses he didn't watch a guide on? Seriously? He didn't even experience the game in a fashion where he had to solve the bosses, yet he's doing a worst to best video? Don't get me wrong the visual element in of itself would play at least a 50% role in my rankings but the strategy and the play through on the boss would consume the other 50%, which is weird because Kuromori is one of the visually least impressive bosses, yet it was worthy of a #2 spot? Doesn't make sense. I realize this is subjective to a point I guess, but I didn't think that the play-ability or strategy on it was anything to trip out about either. Meanwhile a visual masterpiece boss such as Phalanx gets a #6 slot (and the play-ability and the solving of it was top notch as well). Did they draw names out of a hat for the order?
FINALLY, someone who doesn’t just trash Argus for being “too hard” or “complicated” or whatever. Appreciate seeing my favorite colossus getting some love here. 😉👍
wow phaedra last? maybe i liked him so much because i never figured out that thing where he bends down to look... i stood on aggro and jumped on his back... took forever to get right
