Humble Pie - Natural Born Bugie (aka Natural Born Boogie) (1969)

- Humble Pie was an English rock band formed by Steve Marriott in Essex during 1969. They are known as one of the late 1960s' first supergroups and found success on both sides of the Atlantic with such songs as "Black Coffee", "30 Days in the Hole", "I Don't Need No Doctor" and "Natural Born Bugie". The original band line-up featured lead vocalist and guitarist Steve Marriott from Small Faces, vocalist and guitarist Peter Frampton from The Herd, former Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley and a 17-year-old drummer, Jerry Shirley, from The Apostolic Intervention.
I love this group. At 92 I still love to boogie!
Yep, you're never to old to boogie.✔👍
Thanks for that inspiration, I’m only 80 and still grooving to these superb, Super Groups. Rock on to those Pearly Gates, man.
Joan I turn a "Geezerly" 67 on Dec 5th...you gave me hope for the next 15 years...more Natural Born Boogie!
And the amazing thing is rock and roll has survived. There are 20 year olds rocking out to the early stuff. 😲
92 wow bro. Rock on
Real Rock & Roll, children. This is how it's supposed to be.
Bought this single in 1969. Remember walking home from work (I was 17) in the sunshine, with the 45 tucked in my lunch box. Happy, carefree days, with singers like Stevie, Greg and Peter at their peak. We didn't know how lucky we were, or how brief those wonderful days would be. 73 this year...
I am 70. But NOW you know how happy you were. That's the way it goes ... :)
👍👍👍👍👍 THOSE WERE THE DAYS. ETERNITY WILL BE SO MUCH BETTER. TRUST IN JESUS, HE WILL RETURN.
Me to man born 1952 still rocking loved Stevie
Mayyou rock for many more years.
75 this May! This music keeps us young! Luv this song!❤
Steve Marriot had more soul than he could control. Pretty damn powerful voice for a wee Englishman.
Best rock voice ever, never to be repeated Stevie .R.I.P..
Steve Marriott was such an unpredictable but skillful guitarist and Humble Pie had one of the greatest debut releases of all time. RIP Steve Marriott and Greg Ridley
That's what 100% talent looks and sounds like
It's rare to find a band with three talented singers.
@howard bianchi what are you trying to say and what does that have to do with Robert's comment?
Chicago
Three Dog Night, The Temptations
The Eagles
TOTO
This is what i call the ultimate Humble Pie line up! Classic Rockers! Steve was one boogie rockin soul singing giant no matter how tall he was!!! And Frampton was just the right mate to offset Steve's playing!! This whole group rocks!! I love how they trade off lead vocals on this classic song! Long Live Humble Pie!!
Frank quail finch?😂
@@Dragon-Slay3r Meaning What say you??
I still listen to the old groups! I'm 75 and going strong...
GREAT MUSIC KEEPS US YOUNG!
I am 71 young, cheers from Cologne 😀🍷🍷🎉🇩🇪😊
The old groups were great no gimmicks back then but a lot of talent, groups like cream, mountain, grand funk railroad .
I saw in concert alot of the old groups. The most entertaining in my opinion was "Jethro Tull." A rock and roll flute! Incredible...
@@JohnLHall-br8ik cheers 😀🎉🍷🇩🇪
Just been to a 60s weekend,, any of you coffin dodgers,, like me,, still find this track amazing,,fabulous.
Got to say, I revisited this 50 years on. Christ, the quality of these guys’ guitar playing. I saw Steve M at Soton Uni in the sixties. What a player. Thank you.
Two amazing singers and then Mr Marriott opens up his vocal chords …F..king unbelievable
One of the greatest rock bands of our time..Pete Frampton one of the finest fret masters to ever pick up the instrument.
Marriott was the total package. Best rock and roll singer ever.
He was a great soul singer, but a trouble maker and a diva. Just ask The Faces and Peter Frampton.
When Rod Stewart joined The Faces, they said thank God, we couldn’t stand another diva. They were glad to have Rod.
Are we forgetting the great Peter Frampton?!?!?!?!?!
@@kevinreily2529 OK Maybe so but all the bands that Steve was in PEAKED during HIS tenure.
I agree.
ever? come on, think about it.
Just looking at Steve waiting to unleash one of the best voices rock has ever heard is priceless. RIP mate.
Humble pie is one of the most underrated bands of all time.
Comments about bands/musicians/songs being "the most underrated...." are the most clichéd statements on UA-cam. Grow up.
Maybe if they were Immodest Pie.
@@thedolphin5428 I totally agree fella. 👍🏼 I’ve seen people say this shit on videos by the likes of Kate Bush, Japan, supertramp, porcupine tree and many others, it’s so obvious that they’re not underrated ffs.
Not underrated at all- Steve Marriott has always been a giant of rock- Frampton too.
Seen humble pie early 70s Glasgow 🏴with Marriott, Frampton , they were true rockers 🎸
MARRIOTT WAS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!
I can remember as a 13 year old getting my pocket money and running down the main road to the local record shop to buy this single record! I was over the moon. As soon as I got home I played it over and over again until my Dad made me take a break. The record is long gone but I have it in LP which I still listen to occasionally! Loved Humble Pie and Small Faces when Steve Marriott was with them. That music has stayed with me ever since. Great music and happy memories!
I get goosebumps all over the instant Steve Marroitt opens his mouth and starts to sing. He was exploding with talent... like a nuclear explosion!
absolutely Rylie....
Yes sister that man could sing .
Steve Ellis is still pretty good too.
Rylie I totally agree. In my opinion Marriott is the UKs greatest vocalist
Ryllie Riley...omg ...i was sharing this on another site and I said....""".close to 50years later i still get goosebumps grooving on this song"""" .ahaha.... sweet Jesus ..He IS rock and roll ..there is no equal..I was lucky enough to see the Pie back in the day. .I post this on FaceBook about once a month...with the obligatory fuck you to the RRHOF......no...lets put the Go Go's instead of Stevie and Humble Pie...Fuck you RRHOF...oh...sorry for the profanity RR,,,,
Steve Marriott- was a gift to the planets.
And we still miss him after almost 30 years passed. I am just getting around to reading Steve Marriott: All Too Beautiful.
Great song,oh for those days again!
Rock doesn’t get better than ,sorely underrated song and band.
I bought this single as soon as it came out in 1969 and I wore it out trying to learn how to play it. I've no idea what happened to my copy and I've never heard the track since until today on UA-cam. I thought it was mind blowing at the time and after 50 years I realize it still is. It's so comforting to know I had good musical taste even as a teenager. Hahaha
This has been on my play lists for longer than I can remember, never stops me getting my foot tapping, and head rocking.
We wore them out at party time
Never understand the small base they have now compared to other bands of their time. I mean they get recognition, but nothing close to what they oughta. Thank goodness for UA-cam keeping stuff like this accessible
I so agree with you! Why they didn't last longer and received more notoriety, I'll never understand. Thank God we can still enjoy them here!
They don't have a lot of music in their catalogs. Some wasted years there as well.
@howard bianchi That's not so far fetched. There are a lot of bands that have come and gone like that. Elton John was that way. He fired his whole band, including Bernie Taupin. He realized that mistake pretty quickly back then and brought his songwriter back on board. Nothing rare about a band with one driving force in it. FYI, back then it wasn't easy staying sober and that is exactly why a lot of bands were ripped off by managers or accts. As far as who wrote for Small Faces, I think you should read up a little more on them to learn the truth before you go bashing members of the band. Here is an excerpt of some history.
{"Marriott wrote or co-wrote most of Small Faces' hit singles. In an interview in 1984, Marriott was asked what his best Small Faces songs were: "I think 'All or Nothing', that I wrote, takes a lot of beating. To me, if there's a song that typifies that era, then that might be it. Words regardless, cos it's only a silly love song, but the actual feel and arrangement of the thing, and maybe 'Tin Soldier'".[34] In 1967, Marriott wrote the evocative rock-ballad "Tin Soldier" to woo model Jenny Rylance.[35] They first met in 1966 and Marriott was immediately smitten, but Rylance was dating up-and-coming singer Rod Stewart and so the two became friends. She later broke up with Stewart and had a brief romantic liaison with Marriott, but much to his disappointment ended it to go back to Stewart. Rylance and Stewart later split for good after a rocky four-year relationship; when Marriott found out he pursued her relentlessly, leading him to write "Tin Soldier". The song was a hit for the band in 1967 and for Marriott a personal triumph. He and Rylance were married at Kensington Register Office, London, on 29 May 1968."}
I wouldn't dwell to long on that matter, as it will only drive you crazy. Having been around back then I can tell you there were a number of bands that were very hot during that era, but somewhere along the way they got lost in the shuffle. Uriah Heep, Foghat, Bloodrock, and Atomic Rooster are just a few who you rarely hear anymore and if you do it's the same one or two songs played over and over.
What great guitar player Frampton was! Still is!
1969, one of the best years for music. I was 16 back then and listened on a tiny transistor radio
British rock n roll music.. no one can match it..
True
Steve Marriot was a brilliant songwriter, performer, and singer sadly died far too young but his music will live on forever
Marriott's energy is off the hook....was lucky enough to see them live!!
Lucky you.
Frampton or Clemson? ... when u saw the Pie
@@DonTerhune1200cc Clemson was there guitarist at that time...of course I would have loved seeing them with Frampton but I missed that opportunity
Seen Stevie twice in the sixties with The Small Faces...one of the best front men ever & one of the best bands ever! Terrible loss!
The framp was just phenomonal in this song.....great chords.
What a great band?? Surely Steve Marriott was one of the best rock singers of all time?
Steve Marriott was The Best.
Los tres heran muyyyyy buenos🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💪💪💪💪💪💪🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
no doubt!
He was Page's first pick for Zeppelin, but it wasn't meant to be.
@@jfo3000 I believe Sharon Osbourne's father Don Arden, who was The Small Faces' manager at the time, thwarted Jimmy Page's ambitions for Steve Marriott.
Humble Pie Rock On album was one of my high school favorite albums. It opened my eyes to the fantastic guitar playing of Peter Frampton.
This here was the best line-up of Humble Pie in my opinion.
Supergroup!!! Marriott, Frampton, Ridley & Shirley!!!
Saw them all in London 50s.and 60s Family, Stones,Who,nobody compared with Humble Pie,Marriott was best voice of all.
Per squisiti dalla musica 🎸 ☮️ 🎸
I was lucky enough to see them when Frampton was with them. If he would have stayed, Humble Pie would have been a super group.
It still was a super group
One of the first
Me too. R.I. auditorium. They opened for Ten Years After. T.y.a. were blown off the stage. Little Stevie Marriott.
They were called a supergroup (correctly) in the media when their formation was announced.Sheer brilliance.
Greg Ridley 👍 nuff said x
Everyone waiting for Steve to sing. Brilliant.
One of the greatest british bands. Forever Steve Marriott!
Steve Marriott - greatest rock singer of all time!
I am just reading Peter Frampton's autobiography, and so I am late to Humble Pie, but I LOVE it! They are so good!!
Better late than never! 👍
You get 30 days in the hole for being late!
Man.. Steve Marriott what a voice gives me goose bumps every time.. Magic.
Steve Marriott was gifted as an artist can be
God bless Steve Marriott. A musical giant.
This was never off my turntable when it came out....amazing!
It’s like “stand aside boys this is how you do it” god bless Steve
I don't think that is the case at all. Steve sought out both Peter Frampton and Greg Ridley, as well as Jerry Shirley and loved collaborating with them.
Music really isn't that competitive. In a band, it's working together to produce the best sound that you can make.
Stevie was my hero. What a voice. Never a note wrong and such power
He is the man!
PETER FRAMPTON!!! 19YRS. COOL! right here!!!
Humble Pie was the band who were ahead of every other band in their tine, Steve was just a total natural leader and great musician
A very young talented Peter Frampton, this band rocked. Their live at the fillmore is a Rock classic.Hall of fame band for sure.
Steve Marriott different class..r.i.p. mate
I remember watching this often of MTV's Closet Classics back in the late 80's because of Steve Marriot's singing. I didn't know who he was at the time, but his singing made the hairs on your neck stand up.
Steve Marriott should be up there in notoriety with Robert Plant, Lennon, Daltry or any other household classic rock singers name. Such a legend.
Plant loved him ❤
You can hear Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Beatles.........it's Rock n Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Boogie Woogie. Great song.
MGB where you hear Chuck Berry? 😂😂😂
Yes, sounds a lot like Get back from the Beatles ;-))
I can here the start of China town by Thinn Lizzy in this song.
@@charalampostseronis6500 it's a 1/4/5 progresion & there are stragically placed Chuck Unsison bends & licks all through ✌
Derivative Chuck Berry rip-off.
Steve Marriott is for always in my mind
Steve Marriot had it all. And these guys played every classic lick you can think of with an acknowledgement to Elvis and Chuck Berry too
I was 14 when this came along, had been a massive Small Faces fan and then this !!!!! wow
Likewise- I’m from that era. I’m 70 in January loved Steve Marriott with the Small Faces and Humble pie from
Whatcha Gonna Do About It to my favourite Tin Soldier to Rockin the Fillmore priceless.
Where has music like this gone today in 2020?????? Give it to me love it.
Few exceptions: The Brian Jonestown Massacre is still keeping the flame burning nowadays in 2020
Keep looking around. They're out here, and they need you now more than ever.
Check Dead Daises All forms of band...... just awesome
Now days radio stations are so formulated and there's so goddamn many of them unless you go searching you're never going to find great bands like this.
@@stewartbates5533 True, but a) searching and finding them is half the fun (as it was back in the days of bands like Humble Pie) and b) radio ain't where you find them now,
UA-cam and bandcamp is.
They do exist, and you're already here where they can be found; so don't give up.
Humble Pie is THE BEST underrated Band of all time !
They were considered one of the first "Supergroups" :)
Brilliant Steve marriott in his other band I like this one used to have this one on vinyl along time ago, rip Steve marriott ❤❤❤❤🎉🤩😊😎🤗
He (SM) could out sing “Mick J”’ by a mile. Not only that …he could play the guitar. Mick J. knew it, that’s why he didn’t want him around
Sheer class the band are superb fine musicians Marriott and frampton complementing the rest. Great song
Lol,lol, lol, lol…listening to this in 2023 this has a whole other meaning!
I'm 67 and this is the 1st time I've ever seen Peter Frampton perform with Humble Pie, and have to say i really enjoyed Natural Born Woman, great vocs😢als, and great guitar licks, thanks
Fantastic! I'm 67, always liked R-N-R! That's outstanding!
Love this number, shame that they weren't big in this country. It's a crime
I totally agree it is a crime, a crime against music. Love this band have done for many years.
What a year 1969 was!
I remember that, my dad killed my mother that year! it was a pity but still a pretty good year in music! we got abbey road! and led zeppelin II!
Hats off to this guy behind the drums who, I assume, had to dig deep in his own self confidence to team up with those killer singer/guitar/bass players. What a frontline!
Jerry Shirley was an accomplished drummer and was a huge part of the success of Humble Pie .
@@gordonlandreth9550 I agree. And he was only 17!
@@charlieb6001 Nice ! Good knowledge Charlie .
Worry not! without that drummer's groove, it would have been a total different sound.
Such a rocking tight performance you can hear again and again.

Awesime music from my youth love it still today. Steve is missing.
Love Greg Ridley’s bass playing & voice harmonizing with Steve; all the members taking turn singing lead is so very cool. Boogie Woogie Blues sexy tune!! LOVE.

one of the rockinest bands i eer had the pleasure to see in concert.they would leave you wore out after the show,.non stop rock
John Little When did you see them live?
So true. Saw them in '73 post-Frampton with Clem Clemson and it was a powerhouse show driven to the heights by the fact that Foghat opened and burned it up, leaving the Pie to "top this."
AMEN
This was the classic line-up of Humble Pie. Amazing vocals by the front line and great Hard Rock riffs. Rockin the Fillmore is one of the greatest Live albums of all time. Awesome live act. Glenn Augustyn
Totally agree. The re-issue of Rockin’ the Fillmore is worth getting for the different versions on different nights. The King Biscuit Hour album is good too, includes their versions of ‘C’mon Everybody’ & ‘Honky Tonk Women’.
So early on
Frampton still in his "face of 68" look
I loved this music and can still dance to it
Fantastic. And he is talking about all of his influences
Greatly underrated band! Dig Peter Frampton, people!
Greg was previously with Spooky Tooth, who had two excellent lead vocalists, namely Mike Harrison and Gary Wright. When joined Humble Pie, he was finally given the chance to show off his fantastic vocal skills.
Steve Marriott just put everything into it, no holding back.
As all people playing live should
He always did! In everything I’ve seen of him anyway.
This song is obviously not about any of the Jenner/Kardashians.
"All or nothing!"
All or Nothing!
RIP Steve Marriot a stressed guitariste and singer on stage thanks for the songs you did
Stressed?
Steve Marriot had the most unique and incredible voice shame we lost him so soon.
I believe Marriott perished in a house fire a number of years ago. Just as Frampton was wanting to start up a band with his old friend Marriott.
Saw him play at the Three Rabbits Pub (Manor Park, east London) in the 80’s, he was on stage (very small) with Joe Brown and Vicky and Sam Brown......... brilliant
@@iananderson7972 I was just a little kid in the 80s I wish I was born in 69 instead of 79 I missed so much of the best era of music it all ended in 80
By the way A Passion Play is your absolute masterpiece I listen to it ounce a week for the last 10 years thanks
Agree a great performer.do you know tin soldier.little stevie ansing
all of these guys are great, but my favorite was always Greg, ever since I was a kid.
Greg was a good singer and absolutely gorgeous! I'm always amazed that he didn't have a massive career. The drummer and Petey Pie are the only two left. I know this is a long shot, but I'd love to hear Peter play "Natural Born Boogie" at his Rock Hall Induction. My dream group would be Peter's son Julian, Peter's pal Joe Bon(amassa), Andy Timmons who composed "The Boy From Beckenham", and Jason Bonham or Ringo Starr or both drummers. I think they could blow the roof off the place! 🎶💙🎶
remembering the legendary Steve Marriott (1947-1991)
I'm 64 years old , just learned Marriott is British, he sang of swamp, moonshine, red neck jumps, his raspy voice disposed of any accent, I surely love Humble Pie's old songs , R&B blues and so 60s American Classic. ,I mean Brit. Lol
Whole band's British....
Steve was also a child actor in the London West End Musical Oliver, playing the Artful Dodger. He and Peter Frampton played together for one nite in a British pub, The Half Moon, one year before Steve's death. There are a few beautiful photos online from that gig. Steve died within a day or two of Peter's birthday. 😥 🎶💙🎶
When the pipes that Steve Marriott possessed burst in, in this fantastic boogie song, it lifts
it to another dimension. Brilliant, driving Rock from a supergroup, there are none like them now.
Yes, what do we get now... heaven help us.
How can anyone not want to get up and dance to this jam? It just gets your motor running 💃🏻
So glad this was recorded! Never heard this before. Most of the 'New' music I like in recent years is old music I missed the first time around.
1969 great music, great year and an awakening for me.
I love humble pie!
listened to this record many times, never realised there was 2 lead vocals on it
No, actually 3
Just a Grade A solid rocker with a groove for miles. Humble Pie was a monster group with this line-up. I'm glad their performances were captured on shows like Beat-Club.
THE classic Humble Pie line-up. Steve Marriott always was ahead of the curve.
@Ron D The Beat Club hosted some of their best performances by most groups that played the show.
This is one band I never got see live, one hell of a group!!!
Keep looking at this and thinking, "my god, how does Marriott have that much energy?"
Its Called a Speedball....
This is my dream playlist! Love the heavy layers of Small Faces/Humble Pie....Steve Marriot...sigh. Best rock/blues voice ever, and he died so young. And broke. His voice puts chills through me. I always wondered if he was succumbing to schizophrenia, and the r&r life just put him over the edge...
They had a good singer, another very good singer, then they had Stevie Marriott
Spot on man
No fear in sayin' it: greatest singer to ever live
Steve Marriot rules !
Many good bands couldn't make it to have an efficient manager and quickly disappeared like day flies
MrMjp58 too right.
Steve, the only front man I know that throughout the years wore his hair very well in so many styles, they all suited his gigs, so sorry he passed and so sorry that I did not give him the respect he so rightly deserved. Well he's not here and I am, so will pray for him and hoping he will pray for us as we need prayers in this crazy world too!!!
Steve had great hair.
@@paulaolson8956 yes he did, though my fav is the shag, it suited him in a wild way as he danced across the stage
I thought I'd put this on in the background while I worked. Cannot take my eyes off this video between Frampton and Marriott, total energy.
I think Steve liked and respected Peter's talent. Rocking the Filmore East in '71 in my humble opinion was and STILL is one of the Best concerts and recordings to this day!!!
i think Frampton was about 18
@@wwbuirkle yup,I heard he was like 17 when he joined in with Steve.
@@allenbeck7321 Humble your opinion may be but I share it completely. My all time favorite live recording. Steve Marriott’s vocals are spine tingling. But something we haven’t touched on in these discussions is the late Jerry Shirley’s drum work. The Filmore live recording features him at his best. Especially on Get Ready and I don’t need no Doctor.
