- Leopard 2 best tank in the world | From Leopard 1 To Leopard 2A7+ MBT - The Leopard 2 is a MBT developed by Krauss-Maffei in the 1970s for the West German Army. The tank first entered service in 1979 and succeeded the earlier Leopard 1 as the main battle tank of the German Army. It is armed with a 120 mm smoothbore cannon, and is powered by a V-12 twin-turbo diesel engine. Various versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and 12 other European countries, as well as several non-European nations, including Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Singapore, and Turkey.

One thing need to be mention is that at the beginning of the MBT-70 program there is no such thing called "rh120 L44". Rh120's program started after the MBT-70's first prototype is made.
Not sure if the best tank even exists but the Leopard 2 is definitely the best looking one.

There is no such thing is the best tank, each nation has their own doctrine and requirements. For example the Challenger 2 is an excellent tank for Britain but would be useless for Germany.
In terms of looks (yes I am biased) I think the Challenger 2 is the best looking tank, but the Leopard 2 (without the arrowhead armour on the turret) is a very close 2nd.
I think the Russian MBTs are the worst looking tanks though.
Tanks are preference on look and combat skill. I personally love German and Russian tanks by looks.

Chile's tanks were modified to operate at heights of more than 3000 meters and other electronic improvements. That version was called Leopard 2A4CHL
Chile has no special version...all Chile Leo2 CHL are former Bundeswehr Leo2 A4 tanks that simple recive a complete rebuild. The only thing they changed was the electronic added from the A6 and the integration of a battlefield managment system

USA didn’t take the Leopard II but Canada did and it never looked back
Why would the US take it? The M1A2 Abrams has been great for the US and is modular. No tank is invulnerable look what happened to all those Leopard 2s that got destroyed in Turkey.
@@smithnwesson990 Well, at least they worked together on the MBT70 project, which resulted in the M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 MBT series. The US does not often use foreign military products, but much of the technology comes from projects with allied countries.
When talking about the Turkish Leopards, it is always worth mentioning that they were not used in their natural environment. The tanks are mostly designed to fight against other tanks, not so much for insurgents without proper infantry support.

Much of US weaponry besides guns comes from Boeing, Lockheed and Raytheon but Rheinmetal and MBDA amd Nammo also are big contributors hence why the US just adopted the Norwegian Naval Strike Missile or Israels Trophy system. The US would be smart to take the best weaponry from any allied country while developing its Rifles and Armour domestically. Makes sense since the Brits Germans Nordics and Israelis all make top notch gear

Denmark has had leo2 since 2003 called the Leopard 2a5dk with upgraded versions from 2a5dka1, and a2. Which were fielded in the ISAF operation in Afghanistan. Denmark has then gone to procure an upgrade package, to the newest version which will be newest version Leopard 2A7DK.
They already recived the first Leo2 A7DK November 2019 which is in general identical to the A7V
You guys stayed with the Leo 1 for a very long time. I had training in Oksbøl with the Leo 2 in 1993. I remember 2 Danish Leo 1 crew died by drowning during nightly maneuvres. A very sad experience.

singapore has about 180 leopard 2A4 and 2A7 as its MBT on its tiny island. to compliment our fleet of F16s, F15s, F35B, apache airforce. we has also bought German made submarine type 218. to compliment our fleet of -class frigate.

@@GraffDK You mean 1999, I was a gunner in the squadron (1/III/JDR) which where the first to train on the leopard 2a4. for a trail periode for the Armys combat school. We had them for about 1½ years, before they where all sent to KMW for the upgrade to 2a5.

The 105mm gun tested in the Leopard 2 program wasnt the british L7 guns. The 105mm was a smoothbore version. A common misconception but in no document is it stated to be the rifled 105 L7. Perhaps this comes from the fact that the us chose it as their first cannon in the XM1 program
I dislike about this program is that they are frequently talking about one tank and showing another. For instance, at the beginning, they are talking about Leopard I tanks and showing Leopard II tanks. Same goes for antitank weapons.

I heard one of the main reasons was that they still had tons of gas turbines laying around that were built to use in helicopters during the Vietnam War, but then were mothballed when the war ended. The new MBT was a good opportunity to make use of all those turbines.

We in finland bought 100 2A6 for cheaper than scrap value, to ad our 139 2A4 fleet. That bought was greatest thing that our army hq-officers have done in peace time.

Tank fanboys can argue over their favorites all they want. I have seen Abrams and Leo 2 taken out by anti-tank missiles and no tank in the world can survive a hit from a Javelin or top-end Russian anti-tank missiles. PERIOD.
Tom Bombadil keep in mind those were export versions and wasn’t used in it correct combat conditions. So really yes any tank can be killed by anti tank missiles, but there’s also trophy systems to destroy those missiles.

The sloped frontal turret armor is Hollow because of that a Dart round will start to change its path when penetrating allowing 0 Penetration
Yes, It is increasing the armor of the turret's front but 0 penetration is, theoretically, only able in the middle where the distance between the Front of the sloped part and the actual turret is long eough to fit a whole Dart round. But on other areas where the distance is smaller than a dart round it wont stop it completely/change the directon enough, just kind of "help"?!

you forget a basic thing about the leopard. It was the first and until the 1980s the only tank that had a gyroscopic weapon stabilization system since version A2, which always aimed the cannon at the target while driving. The technology at that time - the stabilization of the weapon and the tracking of the optics - served primarily only for better targeting and observation during the movement, in order to minimize the shooting stops otherwise required for the opening of the fire fight. With a trained crew, a fire fight from the movement was possible to a limited extent.

Sorry, but that is incorrect. T-55 uses a D-10T2S 100mm main gun, which was stabilised in both axis. However, it had a rifling of 40, which means it uses spin to stabilise the round, instead of fins. T62 was the first tank to field a smooth bore main gun as mentioned in the video.

Canada uses 112 Leopard 2 delivered since 2010. 20 A6M CAN, 20 A4M CAN, 42 A4 CAN (for training), 12 Bergepanzer 3 and 18 Wisent 2. All were refurbished from 80 A4NL, 20 A6NL and 12 swiss Pz 87.

The german AAA and SAM are not famos and not very numerous. For the few units, the Leoprd I chassis is completely sufficient. I don't think they're on duty anymore. Today 67 Ozelot are said to be on duty. Thats Wiesel with SAM "Stinger".
When I was still with the German armed forces, they had 2000 Leopard II, 2000 Leopard I and about as much M60 and M48 been stored in salt mines that could have been put into service in a short time.
250 of the originally more than 2000 Leopard II are still left today and not even half of them will be ready for use.
If you want to attack Germany, NOW would be the best timing.

You'r mistaken, the Leopard1 wasn't designed and built by KMW. The Leopard was designed and built by Porsche. The Leopard2 by later KMW.
No he is not. The design was by Porsche, Atlas-MaK, Luther-Werke, Jung-Jungenthal, Ruhrstahl AG, Rheinstahl-Hanomag and Rheinstahl-Henschel, with the turret by Rheinmetall and Wegmann. The final production then was done by Krauss-Maffei, which todays is Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann. Porsche later got the order to improve the Leo1, which went nowhere.
Leopard 2 was developed by Krauss-Maffei, Porsche and Wegmann. Krauss-Maffei was then general contractor for Leopard2, however 45% of all Leopard 2 were produced by MaK, not to mention the other 1498 companies that built at least some parts.
