      What is the Bergdorff-Wilson Knot Specificity Index?

    • @s.owl9
      @s.owl9 2 місяці тому +3

      @@steeloniusIdk if it’s real, but if I were to guess, it sounds like a ranking list of how complex knots are. The more complex the knot is, the more specific steps one needs to know to achieve it. It’s like a ranking of how impossible it would be to make a know by chance, like inventing it from scratch. This one would be high because of how complex that last one was, and maybe because you need like 3 different kinds of knots to achieve this result.
      Otherwise it’s a ranking of how niche knots are, like how these knots are specifically made to be a door stop/lock.

    • @bn5055
      @bn5055 2 місяці тому +17

      @@steelonius created in 1985 by Jim Bergdorff and Hank Wilson, the Bergdorff-Wilson Knot Specificity Index defines a scale of knot usage specificity, with 0 being a normal overhand knot, and 10 being the hybrid Klemheist/Trucker's/Evenk/Matthew Walker knot used by Wilson to tie his 1978 DF-2234 Stihl chainsaw to the customised bed of his 1970 Chevrolet C10 shortbed truck to stop it coming loose and injuring his Border Collie, Zeke, who liked to ride in the truckbed.

    After some testing, I've discovered that the same thing can be done with only one short piece of rope, the exact same diamond knot technique, and a blackball hitch (I think that's what it's called). It's even quick release if it's done right, though it may be a little less secure. Still works great though. Thanks for sharing this amazing and useful knot, even if I decided to modify it a little. The general idea is still great.

      It’s one of the things I’ve learned from his channel-once I learned a handful of basic knots, I started to kinda see how other more advanced knots use some of the same principles as the basic knots, or are even just different forms or combinations of them. And if you allow yourself to play around a bit, you can start to come up with your own ways of using cordage in ways like this for very very specific applications. And after that, I started to see how keeping cordage on my person was like carrying innumerable potential improvised solutions to unknown future problems. Small, very localized problems, maybe, but I love solving problems like that.

    Line diameter selection could be important, depending on the clearances in the door selected.
    .
    This is basically the fork+handle, traveling door lock solution.
    I have a commercial version but I can never find it when I need it so something I can fabricate at the last minute is probably what is most used.

    I thought this knot looked familiar. It builds on the Perfection Loop Knot. Difference being, instead of merely crossing over then pushing the lower loop through the top and tightening, you wrap 2x.
    Advantage: Double Dragon. I used the Perfection Loop up until the first time I loaded it hard, and that thing won't come loose, but this one can still be untied after loading.

    Not sure what you call the second knot, looping over the orange cord, but I have a question.
    Why not use a Prusik around both strands? By going over doubled strands you have the diameter differential that gives greatbbite for a Prusik knot.

    So hold 3-4 pennies together. Slip them in the door crack, the space between the door and the door frame. There should be enough so that one penny will be too many. Holding them so that that one penny is in the middle of the stack of 3-4 pennies as you press that stack into the space. Then hammer the little stack into the space between the door and the frame. No one can push open the door from the outside…without a battering ram. To remove the pennies, place a butter knife behind the pennies and pull. They’ll come out easily. You’re welcome.
