I keep a handgun and an AR-15 in my bedroom for self-defense purposes. The reasons behind this will be discussed at length in a later video.
That said, if I for reasons wanted to use a shotgun for home defense, it would without question be my Benelli M4 and here are the 5 reasons why.
However, as important as the type of gun is when it comes to home defense, it's also about the training and ensuring you're prepared.
    That's why I'm a USCCA member.
It's an easy way to cover all my bases if I ever had to use my gun in self-defense.
I could find myself in a costly legal case to prove that me using my gun was justified.
The beautiful thing about a USCCA membership is that you don't just get self-defense insurance; you also get access to their treasure trove of education and training programs.

I shot the Beneli M4 in 2002 when I was in the Marines. The Marines just started using it. Very easy to use and is extremely tactile. You can either load it from the bottom or the side. After shooting it, my plan was when I ever by a shotgun, it would be my shotgun of choice.

Must have been a minute since you bought your kit (or the world is sane again since the last time I attempted to buy one) ; about a year and half ago I purchased one and $3K was there price for the base package straight out of the crate direct from Italy. Except my order was cancelled; they couldn't import them fast enough or in large enough quantities to meet the demand and the crate my local sporting outfit had reserved either fell through after the fact or was oversold from pending backorders. I got a bead on one in Texas and it was running the same price point. And this was through an associate of a friend. Also was gone by the best day or two by the time I responded. So, they were running that price stock, before w even consider the beating the dollar has taken recently with regards to inflation. I couldn't get one at any cost while shouting, "take my money" and eaving cash in the air, metaphorically speaking. Except for the cash part. I was offering cash to anyone that could get my hands on an M4 in any condition. Maybe three market is sane again, but I'm not holding my breath.

If you want to use a shotgun for home defense make sure you make a good choice on your ammunition; #4 Buckshot was determined by FBI ballistic testing to be the best shotgun ammunition regarding home defense as it is lethal at defensive ranges, pattern well out of a cylinder bore, and had the minimum risk of over penetration. While the FBI found the .223/5.56x45mm was the best round in general for home defense as it was lethal and had the minimum past penetration distance of the rounds tested. 00 Buckshot penetrates much greater than #4 Buckshot and is able to travel through enough wall structures to equate to 2+ houses when it is not stopped by a body with slugs (12 ga.) being able to actually go past 4 houses of equivalent walls. Oddly pistol caliber ammunition’s were also quite prone to over penetrate when a body was missed.
Our department and our co-training department also did quite a bit of independent ballistic testing and found similar results; we still standardized 00 Buckshot for most of the time, however warrant service in homes emptied and reloaded #4 Buckshot. Personally I too prefer an AR pattern rifle for home defense but do run 3-gun competitions and have a tactical shotgun (Remington 870 police special with tritium night sights) which doubles up as a home defense backup, it is loaded with #4 Buckshot with 00 Buckshot set up on a side saddle and slugs set up on a stock saddle.
Whatever you choose practice as I’ve seen people that have, under stress, forgot to pump the shotgun. You can also keep a shotgun patrol ready, which can be a bit safer than keeping a round chambered; patrol ready involves closing the action on a verified empty chamber, loading the magazine tube, then pulling the trigger, this leaves the slide unlocked and simply requires racking to load a round. If you choose to keep a round loaded then that’s fine to.

That said I will trust individual people over an agency while unsolved understanding agencies can bring incredible pressure to bare to get people to comply with what it wants, be it citizens or workers, so you should always have your eyes open. The M4 is a great tactical shotgun . The one big thing they did that messed it up was what they did with the magizine tube making it far more expensive and difficult to install an extended magizine tube. This is where the M2 sines for less money. ( although both are over priced compared to other great semi auto self defense shotguns)
If you like the m4 or m2 you really should try a FNH SLP 12 gage semi auto. It is a truly great shotgun. And for 3 gun competition check out the XRAIL M2 semi auto shotgun and remove the need to reload all together. It is a 28+1 round rotary fed semi automatic 12 guage. Or you can get just the xrail system and install it to your favorite shot gun in 16 to 25 rd options.
But the m4 is a proven tank for sure

Careful with other Turkish M4s cause the bolt carriers can be made of soft metal that deforms from the pistons slapping them. Sometimes the pistons can also be soft metal.
I got 4 Panzer M4s and couldn't be happier. Yeah it was a ton of work to completely strip all of them down but now I got 4 M4's for the price of one.

I enthusiastically agree...! I am very fortunate to own 2 M4's. One is the M1014 with collapsible stock and full capacity tube. I added a Trijicon RMR using a ScalarWorks mount, a Ferro Concepts Slingster, and a Mesa Tactical M-Lok handguard, which enabled me to mount a Surefire M300 light with remote switch. It is a reliable and a no-brainer to shoot well as Colion stated. If you want to make it even softer to shoot, add a Limbsaver butt pad also.
My M4's are both r922 compliant using Freedom Fighter Tactical after-market parts.
I enjoyed the M1014 so much that I found an M4 NFA 14" SBS for sale online. I bought it immediately ($😳$) but had to wait for 4 months for ATF approval. It also has the adjustable stock and for home defense, nothing can touch it. I installed another RMR with a taller mount for faster dot acquisition, and added a Briley MLok handguard, a surefire M140 micro light, the Limbsaver, and the Slingster. At 14" the SBS, like AR's, is very maneuverable, lightweight, and surprisingly accurate out to 40-50 yards, depending upon the load. I use #3 or #4 buck for home defense. It will end a threat very quickly and it's not likely to do as much peripheral damage as 00 buck or slugs.
I understand that M4's are VERY costly when compared to mass market shotguns. It was "buy twice and cry twice" for me, but NO doubt worth every penny! imho.

The only thing that makes me hesitant on it is the fact that it's nearly 2G's where I'm at AND if I wind up using it defensively then it's 2G's the police will be holding onto for a while as they do their 'investigation.' Seems like the police have an easy path to taking possession of a citizen's firearm but a not so easy path in returning it even when they've found no evidence of wrongdoing and it would be too great of a temptation for them to not want to give it back ever.

I have finally for a reason to disagree with you. I have seen Benellisfall apart in demonstrations. I'll stick with my M97 . Anyone can be fast. But even with a shotgun accuracy count on the first shot.

@GhillieGoat unfortunately I saw the same failure. Two years in a row. So that turned me away from Benelli

Good points made, and nice to see you do another video with it.
Personally, I like the way you've left it as it was built.
To each their own, but to me, the standard stock is primo.

What's your thoughts on a Saiga 12 for home protection

Don't use the larger capacity magazines.
A friend has one & it turns into a jam-o-matic with the 25 mags & the drum.
Maybe he just needed to break it in but it was frustrating trying to get doubles with it.

Great gun. If the Marines' endorsement is not enough for you, the M4 has Colion's as well. That is enough for me.

If you shoot clays and bird hunt, running the pump is second nature. But yeah m4 pretty much tops everything.

I've had one for several years and love it. Easy to shoot and cycles blindingly fast. Only kids a collapsible stock and a weapon light

My favorite truck is my 1994 f150 manual transmission and love it. Nothing like a revolve and a Shockwave behind the headrest.

I have this rifle, the best feature is that you can ghost load 9 rounds in it. You left the best part out my man.

M4 is sick; love it - self cleaning ARGO system! if you’re tweaking this with 3rd party add-ons ensure you take the time to install correctly.

Colion I thought my Saga 12 and Mossberg 930 was my best home defense tool until I got my Beneli. Say no more. It’s a beast

I have two M4s when they first came on the civilian market my buddy also a Marine and I took mine out to our shooting range and purposefully tried to trash it. We are pretty disrespectful to it and it never missed a beat. I have since tricked my primary out with extended mag tube, red dot, Mlok forestock, with a light attached and picatinny side saddle. My suppressed, SBR, LWRC is my go to long gun but I wouldn't feel outgunned in the home with the Benelli.
