Can the Friedman BE100 keep up with the Splawn Nitro? Hear them both with the Mud Killer pedal and in a mix.

I've still got my old Nitro from I think around 2007. Still the hardest hitting amp I've ever plugged into. It's not a super saturated gain and I think that is why it remains such a clear and articulate amp at stupid high volume. The low end can be kinda wild to tame on stage though. I used to gig with an MXR 10 band in the EQ pulling those really low frequencies down some so people could hear the bass player.
I've since owned a Runt 50 and while it was a really nice amp, the Nitro still came close enough to the high gain sounds of the Runt that I still preferred just running into the Nitro and my Jubilee did the lower gain classic JCM800 and 50w plexi thing nearly as good as the Runt50 did the lower gain stuff that I felt like the Runt was a redundant amp in my collection so I sold it.
The clean channel on the Runt though smokes the Nitro and Jubilee cleans.
For high gain stuff with the nitro, I prefer leaving it on OD1 and hitting it really hard with a boost. OD1 stays clearer to me than OD2.

Sounds like the Splawn would feel better for leads based on your comments. Easier to play with more texture.
It's crazy to think that you can get a Splawn for less money and arguably, based on your taste, a better sounding amp. Personal taste I know. Friedman is such a big name in the business too. Both great, though. No offense to those who prefer Friedman.

The be-100 is a great amp. I own two of them myself. Go to Doug rappaports channel so you can hear exactly what this amp
Can really do. It’s probably the best out there.

The runt 50 is a bit tighter, great amp. But I was a splawn artist and the quick rod was a killer amplifier way more aggressive and ballsy

It bothers me when people start telling you how to use your amp, too much gain, not to use a boost or OD, etc. Do what works for you and make you want to play, I tell people. Thanks for keeping it real, brother.

Wow the BE100 flubs right up past 8 on the gain dial doesn't it! I think with some mucking around with speakers and cab you could get some satisfactory Metal out of it. Might not be the best bet for down tuning though with how loose it gets. Wonder how she'd go with the presence rolled off further and the treble brought up to combat some of that boom.

As always Jarrod, you nailed it and what's going on. The Friedman BE100 is very spongy and saggy. The Splawn in this shootout it tighter. All of the Friedman line except for the Butterslax are basically the same amp and only slight changes. Dave has changed the B+ over the last 12 year since 2010 from 47uF to 33, 22, 16 and it depends on the amp you use. The original BE100 is very spongy and has 47uF caps across the B+ line, even in the preamp. To get the tightness, like a Splawn or Engl or whatever, it would need to be tuned to the player and if I were having you do a shootout with closer comparison amps, I would recommend the JJ 100w. It has exactly that and Jerry Cantrell has it tightened up in the B+ and 16uF caps, so with saturation on and boosted with the yes, adds an additional gain stage to the front end....it's nasty and saturated, but tighter and more note definition!! Hope this help explain what's going on brother.

I had the JJ100 and it really didn’t do it for me. I’m a huge Cantrell fan and I got the modded version that comes with the Thump knob and an extra volume and gain for the JBE. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great amp, but lacked aggression. It was very thick and chewy and more of a hard rock amp. I couldn’t get it where I wanted for tight metal stuff. My Splawn Quickrod smacked it upside the head in that department. Sold the Friedman and pretty happy with the Splawn. I’d like to try a BE100 deluxe at some point.

@@brandonbryson3317 well that's the great thing about amps...different strokes for different folks.
It's pretty aggressive in JBE mode. You sure you had it engaged? Not brutal, but can be made to be, but aggressive, yes!
Don't forget, amps need to be serviced. Was the amp you played new or used? Was it biased appropriately?? Makes a significant difference.
I've modified a lot of Friedman's. One I did for Rob Singleton (mutual friend with Jarrod), has been modified a few different times to get where he wanted it. It's pretty brutal and nothing like the original BE-100 design!
I sent a clip to Jason Tong from Headfirst amps in Australia and he loved it. He said, oh man, that things sounds great and soo thick!! 😁👍

    • @brandonbryson3317
      @brandonbryson3317 Рік тому +1

@@RozsaAmplificationLLC it was definitely working correctly. Plenty of saturation. It’s core sound just wasn’t what I was looking for. It was darker sounding than I would have thought and it was totally useable for modern stuff, but just not for my ears. I like that really aggressive clank you get from Marshall and certain Engl style amps. The Splawn does it in spades. The JJ just seemed like it also lacked low end punch…even with the thump knob, I wanted a bit more. I think it just comes down to it being voiced more in the low mids, which I don’t care for. I like alot of high mid content like Splawn and Peavey do.
