  • Are chronic aches in your knees, back, or neck holding you back? Contrary to widespread belief, this is not a normal part of aging. Many factors contribute to chronic pain, but one unspoken area could be a part of the problem: your shoes.
    Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Galahad Clark to discuss how our modern-day footwear could be an overlooked area contributing to chronic pain. Dhru and Galahad discuss how conventional shoes restrict our feet's natural shape and movement, making them weaker, and how this impacts the rest of our bodies. They also discuss the environmental impact of the shoe industry and why we need a radical shift toward a more sustainable solution.
    Galahad Clark is a visionary entrepreneur and sustainability advocate who is revolutionizing the footwear industry with his innovative approach to crafting eco-friendly and socially responsible shoes. Galahad inherited a deep appreciation for shoe craftsmanship and quality design as a seventh-generation shoemaker and descendant of the Clark Shoes enterprise. A degree in Anthropology matched with his family background, eventually led Galahad to create the minimalist, environmentally conscious barefoot shoe company Vivobarefoot. Vivobarefoot is on a mission to make the world healthier by designing footwear that allows our feet to function the way they were intended to.
    In this episode, Dhru and Galahad dive into:
    -Dhru’s experience with chronic knee pain from wearing conventional shoes
    -How modern-day footwear contributes to knee, neck, and back pain
    -The connection between foot and brain development
    -Top types of shoes that contribute to chronic pain
    -The many functions of the “great” toe
    -Why bunions are not hereditary
    -How barefoot shoes help strengthen the feet
    -The benefits of walking barefoot
    -The three areas that make Vivobarefoot shoes unique
    -A look at how footwear has evolved throughout human history
    -Navigating the adjustment period to barefoot shoes
    -Galahad’s story and why he started Vivobarefoot
    -Trends in sneakers and footwear continue to get worse

    Its quiet interesting how we reject the reality of our situation and expect to be able to observe it, control it and even change it. I used to be financially depressed until I read a book that made me realized that the secret to making a million is making better investments.

    Just want to highlight this gentleman is not a scientist nor clinician. As a practicing podiatrist for 27 years , I would argue that a high BMI and the western inflammatory diet is the source of chronic pain and incorrect shoes may play a small part . (I do call woman’s dress shoes torture devices though)
    Although I agree with natural foot movement, many people have foot conditions , alignment issues , or maladaptations which would make things much worse jumping into these minimalist shoes . If this is the case , I would recommend working with an open-minded podiatrist to determine if one can slowly adjust to these shoes or not to prevent injury and exacerbation of their foot issues.

    I have been living barefoot for a long time now, and I am much healthier for it. Dhru isn't quite ready to abandon societal fashion just yet, but it would be better for all of us if we did. In the modern world, shoes are about as necessary as gloves. You may need them when doing something specifically dangerous, but otherwise why not just go barefoot?

    Long time Vivobarefooter. In the early 2000s I wore Camper Peu street shoes as an introduction to wide toe box, zero drop shoes then dabbled in the “Paleo Diet” who recommended vivo’s “Neo” road runners, which I loved. Another favorite back then we’re the “Breathos” lightweight trail runners. Many models back then, all inspiring 🦶

    Great podcast (as most of Dhru' :) !!) My track&field coach in the 80ties gave some attention to foot exersize, and like Galahad explains also advised by Bill Bowermann. So we did some of this, but this got lost afterwards. As track&field athletes we were also confronted those days with Abebe Bikila and Zola Budd racing barefoot. I have my long term foot-problem with pretty extreme hallux valgus developed over the years and kind of permanent nagging pain wearing "classic shoes". Recently I came across some nice people with similar background and they told me about their experience with Vibrams. Bought a a pair and my short-term experience with barefoot walking, toe-speaders, and Vibram 5toes....wow... what a difference. Just got 70yrs and hope to enjoy painfree feet many more years. No more pain from day1 of wearing Vibrams. And maybe some real correction of malformed feet ahead. 😇👌

    I love minimalist shoes, if only Vivo’s fit me. They are made for low volume feet, and I have high volume feet (high arch, high instep) I’ve tried 3 times with different models, but alas, no success. I think Vivos are actually quite fashionable and could care less what societal fashion tells me I should like.

    What's not discussed by either the host or guest is that we now have a concrete and asphalt jungle world where minimalist type footwear, and how minimalist footwear may be potentially harmful. We don't live in the jungle or forest anymore.

      A lot of natural environments are virtually as hard or harder than asphalt, like certain types of clay soil, which feel like concrete in hot, dry environments. And I live on an island that is mostly rock🤷🏼‍♀️.

    How crazy disabling that Chinese fashion was! Once one had given up tight-fitting&high-heeled shoes, there's no going back. Any form of hat had always been irritating to me. There still are other forms of restrictive clothing, such as tight-fitting jeans, and different length tights; not healthy, since inhibiting the skin's natural function.

    Without going into the primary cause, I had an extended hospital stay in which I developed sever pitting adema. After several months it reduced in my legs however it is still causing issues in my feet. It feels like I'm walking on a mattress now. Lack of balance, pain and loss of movement. Any suggestions? It has disruptive effects on many aspects of my life.

      Sounds like peripheral nerve damage and muscle wasting in the foot (similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, which I had in the hand 2 decades ago).
      When adequate blood supply had been restored, the nerves can regenerate. Recovery to optimum function usually takes about the same time than what the condition took to develop. The muscles get stronger according to how much they are used, but might not end up being as strong as before. In general regular exercise improves blood flow ('Motion is the lotion' & 'Blood is the life-force'). Also look into Grounding.
      At the time was not aware, but to assist in nerve-regeneration, you might benefit much from taking B Vitamins (should at least contain B1, B6 & B12); as well as Collagen-, Vit C-, Fat-soluble Vit ADEK-, Omega-3 and Cholesterol-rich foods. Regular sun exposure to produce enough Vit D, or otherwise supplement with D3 - alongside Magnesium& Vit K2. To boost metabolism, Kelp is useful (containing Iodine&Selenium), and to encourage nerve regeneration, there also are other supplements, spices and herbs to consider; interesting, and worth to look into...
      Also make sure to get enough deep, restorative sleep, and you might consider employing regular fasting (daily&more extended), since when not digesting, the body can use more of its energy to detox, heal&repair. Wishing you a speedy recovery 🤗

    • @maricamaas2326
      @maricamaas2326 10 місяців тому +1

      To improve blood circulation, you could look into doing hot&cold contrast baths of the whole body or the feet alone: For example repeat - over period of 30 min: Hot emersion for 30sec, and icy cold for 2min;
      or otherwise ice for 20 min, and heat for 15 min.
      To promote detoxification: Add Epsom Salts to hot bathwater.
      To alleviate pain, break down adhesions, and promote healing&repair: Apply DMSO (if available with Aloe Vera Gel) on feet.

      @@maricamaas2326 Thank you, all good suggestions. I'm going to try a pair of Vivobarefoot shoes to see if that helps in several ways. I'm not sure it will help as not only does it feel like I'm walking on a mattress, but a mattress full of needles 🙃 I also have significant blood flow issues,(two emergent Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms and now one of less than 100 people world wide with an experimental device placed in my aorta, many not still alive or experiencing issues far worse than me (paralysis)). Again, thank you for the good advice, it shows you know what you are saying.

      I think you should walk barefoot as much as you can because of the nerve damage and lack of feel and balance. I speak from experience. The sensory information of your hands and feet have a very big representation in your brain (compared to for example your hip or arm). Let your feet make direct contact with the ground as much as possible and give the best possible feedback to your brain, also your damaged nerves can improve faster due to more stimulation. Also you reduce the risk of falling. Walk barefoor on different surfaces. Use only shoes when you go outside shopping etc.
