Dr Bikman gave a wonderful insight into fat cells - It was fascinating to hear how some ethnicities can “ multiply “ fat cells and thereby grow fatter without having health consequences whereas other ethnicities cannot multiply fat cells , and their cells become so enlarged that they ultimately start leaking to prevent bursting .. And thereby cause metabolic disaster to the body.
Yes. It's natural that ethnicities differ due to the different nutrition situations past generations have faced. I greatly dislike how woke cultists try to control science by stating all people and ethnicities are the same. They are not! That's why all ethnicities have certain diseases they are prone to have. For example sickel cell disease, which prevented malaria for the forefathers of black Africans. Our DNA is so specialized on our epigenetic values. That's one of the wonders of life. 🌱
I tested my fasting insulin, and glucose 5 months ago it was 26.4 and 113 respectively. Since I started a weight lifting combined with mtb riding combined with intermitent fastind, last week I tested again and the results were amazing. Glucose 106 and insulin 15.2, that got me more motivated to avoid all junk food, carbohydrates and keep the lifestyle. Now I am being more rigid with what I eat
After having experinented with with every diet and protocol for years, I have finally achieved perfection on every metric including lipid profile and body composition and never feel hunger in the following way = One meal a day consisting of = at least 500gr grass fed steak, 5 organic eggs , 1 can sardines in spring water, 30 gr grass fed butter and one scoop grass fed whey with stivia. Total carbs 3 gr. And 30 min resistance training in a fasted state per day.
I so appreciated the doctor's honest forthright answers to even admitting he's not an expert in different areas yet still clearly giving his voice to other possibilities. Another great interview!!

Keto carnivore diet really helped me get out, was hopeless for the longest time, the hardest part is adjusting mentally 🙃 was surprised how quickly my body reversed many of the issues I had brought on to myself. What I was not prepared to deal with is the mental aspects and figuring out the root cause of my personal problems. There's hope out there folks think of it as an non linear upward spiral journey.
This is one of the best explanations I’ve heard about fat metabolism and why we gain or lose weight. Thanks for making this accessible to the layman such that we can be better at building our own health.
Dr. Bikman is a fascinating interview, always. Dhru ,not so much. How many times does he have to brag about physical appearance. I'm skinny, I have only 15 % body fat...etc,etc. Please!
In April my fat % was 22.8. In August came down to 18.2% I skipped breakfast and had some protein for lunch and did exercises for 3 times a week. I increased up to 4 days a week and I am planning to reduce my fat %.
Loved this great interview of one of my favorite resources for metabolic health! I love the shakes by the way. and Why We Get Sick . . I wish Dr.Bikman had elaborated a little bit more about length and frequency of fasting that he would suggest. I am 72 year old woman, prioritize ruminant protein, and do resistance training. I would like to lose about 10 lbs of fat, gain muscle and bone strength. I am RN and still work part-time as substitute school nurse. I think I have never felt better in my life. I am familiar with DietDoctor, Jason Fung, Eric Westman's page 4, Dr. Ted Naiman, Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Robert Cywes, and others.
Are you familiar with the work of MD Mindy Pelz? To lose fat, doing alternate day fasting (not eating for 36 hours) works very well; with resistance training on the feasting days.
It’s always pleasure to listen to Dr Ben Bikman have learned so much from me .thank Dhru for having this dr with so much to to offer.thank you have been following him and my health improved greatly .thank you ❤
Type 1 diabetic, and trying to reset my food -- way too much cheese, because it doesn't raise glucose much. Still fattening, though. "Insulin" is not the enemy -- we'd all be dead without it. "Excess insulin" is not as easy to control as people seem to think, when you have to control it yourself, control your eating, etc -- it's overwhelming sometimes. You don't know how lucky you are if you are worried about "insulin resistance" and are not even diabetic, and can still make your own insulin and amylin. Wish you could do an episode for T1D who are having weight gain issues, because there are too many of us. "Choose: High glucose, or fat storing insulin, or obsessing about not eating and exercising all of the time." Theory goes out the window in the real world. As a lifelong insulin dependent diabetic, I understand the complaint that T2D are being given too much insulin or sulfonylureas to reduce glucose, but some of us need injections of this slow and dangerous medication or we croak. And so, more of a qualifier needs to be said by these doctors, because not all diabetics are in the same situation, and we don't have a choice. It is always going to be to inject engineered insulin, or get sick and expire. I'm glad he mentioned us, but missing an easier solution. Obviously "diabulimia" is self harm and eventual suicide.
I think he's addressing type 2...that one can be manipulated. Type 1 is different from type 2.. needs other options....not critizing the type 1 diabetes insulin
I understand. Cheese is addictive...it has an opiate like molecule in it. Somehow or other it would be likely be wise for you to switch to all meat and animal fat diet for about 90 days. I would need more info to be more helpful. See Dr Ken Berrys and Dr. Lustig and Richard Johnstone and Daniel Amen for starters. It's a lot of homework. Slow steady progressive but better than the horrendous suffering that diabetes causes By the way type 1 or type 2 can be mixed up by even endocrinologist.
I can’t agree with you enough! It somehow felt warming he briefly mentioned us. Completely agree there should be more studies for those who require insulin and are trying to lose weight
Thank you, Dhru & Dr. Bikman for a good conversation! You both seem sincere & your info very helpful. In the same vein, I do hope to inspire the kind Scientist to be even more desirous & diligent in his search for the eternal, Truth, noting that, "....God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise;..." Praise God for His Grace wherein the uneducated & the most educated among us can find ourselves on level ground at the foot of the ✝️ with the power therein to test for Truth as well! I thank you for the gift of knowledge for the here & now & pray you find & grow in the greater knowledge of the here & forever-after! 🙏🏽
Yes true, dr Bikman It’s one of the kind passionate about his profession and helping people.he is awes🎉some! His clear beautiful diction and wording he is using is truly remarkable! I love Dhru podcast, he simply the best! Thanks
Ben Bikman: Nobody puts insulin in a corner. I'm sooo glad you pressed him on weight gain while in a low insulin state! Because that's a question that needs answering. Those who are all or primarily about the endocrine model of weight loss constantly try to hand wave caloric intake. Like you, Dhru, I endlessly see anecdotal reports (on Reddit fasting/carnivore/keto subs) of people eating low insulinemic diets who aren't losing any weight, have plateaued with their weight loss, or who are even gaining weight. I lost half my body weight (from 252 to 124) and my last DEXA puts me at 18% bf (I'm female). But all along the way I experienced plateaus that only fasting would bust. I did many a PSMF cycle and the needle wouldn't budge for a week or even more. There is an explanation for that that cannot be explained with just insulin. Or, if it can, I haven't heard the answer yet. Not even from Ben Bikman. And lastly, why is "counting calories" such a dirty word? I did it and I loved it. It provided structure, accountability, and knowledge! How else was I going to know how much protein I was getting? How many calories I was REALLY eating? NO ONE knows how much they're really eating by just guessing and doing mental math. Now, are calories/thermodynamics perfect? No. But in my experience every obese person trying to take the weight off must weigh and log everything they eat, at least for a significant period of time, if they want to maximize their results.
If people are drinking 5 gallons of heavy cream a day they will gain weight because the fat doesn't disappear, it just goes to the adipose tissue first and not to the liver first unlike the fats produced from fructose or alcohol which go straight to the liver. That's why many low carb doctors discourage liquid calories and want people to eat the fat that comes with the protein and don't add more. I think the most powerful combination is a low carb diet that lowers insulin combined with time-restricted eating (which is easier to do when your insulin is lower and your body body is fat adapted) and also do some kind of alternate day fasting. I had struggled with my weight since I was a kid. I finally was able to attain sustained fat loss with a keto diet but I still plateaued after I lost 100 pounds with 70 to go. The next 70 I lost when I incorporated 2 or 3 days of non consecutive fasting days per week. That way I reduce overall calories without having my basal metabolic rate collapse which happens when you do the same caloric restriction everyday. Love the work of Dr Fung regarding this process. I also just eat 2 meals a day during my eating days eliminating all snacking
Excellent. I would say if someone is gaining on carnivore, they need to minimize to one meal a day. OMAD keto or carnivore. Working like a charm for me.
Forget the freezing over, the warming up, the asteroids, so often depicted in dystopian futures, what we need is a movie based on a dystopian future of obesity, the picture he paints at the beginning is so bleak and utterly true and horrifying. And no govt seems to care at putting a stop to all this processed food.
I agree. The movie WALL-E kind of shows that with all the characters being sedentary and obese. I know its a cartoon and a Disney (yuck!) movie, but kind of depicts it.
My entire family is fat & diabetic. I refuse so I fight by having no carbs. (a few of my children are fighting too) So far 66, no longer obese, and no symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Dr Ben knows insulin. Thanks for the real science @Ben Bikman, InsulinIQ
I have been SO Lucky to be born 1950. Good home cooked meat and vegtables. 3 meals a day. After that Overlacto Veg. Sugar freak sadly. No meds at all at 73 years young. Since they have AMBUSHED our food. Now pescatarian thanks to wonderful people like YOU. FAMILLY UNITY was Paramount. SPIRITUAL. cheers
Our ancestors focused on survival. They ate animals, fish, snails, plants, seeds, nuts, berries. I'd love for these discussions to sway away from specific diets and more towards the study of why certain populations live longer and healthier.
Great information Ben is a wonderful guest. I agree 100% ancestors would not have sought out only protein. I think the whole protein debate is so as protein shakes can be sold. My preference is lamb meat and Oxtails And fatty free range duck and eggs. Satiety is the key.
I've heard Dr. Bikman many times, but this might be the best one I have ever heard. There's something about the way he rolls out the information in this one that's particularly good. Great job on the hosts part as well.
PCOS, Hashimotos, polycythemia vera, 60 years old, 5'3" 218 lbs. Fatty liver, SO VERY HARD for me to loose weight! VSG 8 years ago. Only lost 20 pounds! Then the weight started to come back. Eating healthy now, low carb, 80 grams protein. Off 2 diabetes meds. But loss is so slow!
I'm convinced I was insuline resistant before going Keto. Prior to doing the diet change I asked my doctor to prescribe a fasting unsuline test and the answer was i dont need it because I wasn't diabetic...Also went to see 2 nutricionists, the fist didnt know the difference between Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load so I didn't listen to anything else she said when she couldn't answer that. I went to see a 2nd nutricionist, he didn't know Fructose metabolism is different from Glucose metabolism... It's a weird feeling to realise that you are better informed than some physicians...
It’s obvious that the daily loading of sugar and simple carbs are driving this problem. But admittance to it and the subsequent corrections might not gel well with the food and healthcare industry.
his words at the beginning touched me very much and made me think. aspects that have so far received little attention on the subject of nutrition and illness - thank you!
It is with great pleasure that i will say this was one of the most educational video i have viewed, i have gained a great deal of info to assist me and others. Thank you
I really enjoyed listening to this edification on diet/life style plan. In the end, when he listed his 4 things to do, it was great to hear because I'm doing them already. And I hope to see some results of weight loss soon.
Totally amazing very practical and useful information for my journey to keep trying to understand my system and lose weight. Greetings and blessings from phoenix Arizona from Imelda.
EXCELLENT - thank you Dhru, Dr. Ben Bikman is amazing - and I LOVE how he always explains difficult concepts (what I believe to be difficult, anyway) so well!! :)
I really respected Ivor Cummins videos and his analyses of Covid, the lockdowns, epidemiology and all cause mortality graphs throughout the pandemic and how different countries approaches created better or worse outcomes in a holistic way. He's an engineer, not a virologist so he brought a refreshing and novel viewpoint to the topic.
Great information. Because I follow you dhru, and guest. Dr. Bikmn has said so much regarding insulin, the average person would be confused, along with your injections. It's about your guess. 🤔
I am so sorry but I really believe that ninety percent of the people that are interested in what you have to say won't listen to you more for more than about fifteen to twenty minutes but you guys are doing a good job
Yes so cows and pigs can have leaky gut so if they are grain fed we are exposed to the grain proteins by eating the grain fed meat. And that has all kinds of legal implications.
The reason this has gone global is because America has exported a lot of these “fast food” restaurants. If it’s from America, it seems like the world will accept it and not consider the consequences of doing so.
Great insights. Just stop using your experience in evry interview.... Its not about you. Itsa about the insights of your guests. Or just go have a coffee with them
Dr. Bikman said something that contradicts most every diet authority (meaning teacher or doctor, influencer or other person's informing the general public) denies, and that is that consumed fat can be stored as body fat (46:54). I have been told for years, that is not possible. I have struggled to understand why I am putting on body fat when I was eating only moderate protein (not enough actually according to most online health authorities), high fat and very, very low carb (averaging 1800-2000 calories per day). I can even gain weight on a high fat carnivore diet! Every other authority seems to claim it is the protein being converted to glucose and that the glucose is then stored as body fat. But Dr. Bikman seems to indicate that the consumed fat itself can be stored as body fat. This is paradigm shifting.
Around 47:12 Dhru and Dr. Bikman we’re talking about people who were gaining weight on carnivore or kept diets. Dr. Bikman seemed a bit stumped as to why this could happen because insulin would be low… but what if these individuals are under heavy stress? I remember hearing how you can become insulin resistant despite a healthy diet due to stress causing high cortisol which raised blood glucose and then insulin. So in theory, these people COULD be gaining weight despite their diet not causing the increase in insulin. I know with my husband, we have been low carb/Whole Foods for a long time BUT his job is high stress in addition to having 3 young kids which is high stress in itself. His blood work showed him having an A1C in the pre diabetes category and my only conclusion would be it’s due to the stress, NOT the diet because it would be nearly impossible for us to eat any healthier. Thoughts?
Problem with Insulin is it's a sendout test that has to be handled quickly, frozen and delivered to a large specialty lab with results coming back a week or so later. Everything else, like glucose, A1c, liver enzymes and lipid panels are all done in house. Also insulin is relatively expensive as a sendout... So most doctors think twice before they check "insulin" off as a lab order.
There is in general a shortage of doctors. There are almost 0 doctors that work WITH patients and have any real knowledge regarding metabolic health. I am very motivated to stay extremely healthy and mentally competent so I can take care of me.
Guys: Blood Type A can readily digest higher protein and fat foods from animal sources while Type A has lower stomach acid and digests vegetable sources of protein and fat more readily. People could consider their blood type when selecting their foods.
About fiber. It seems even Dr Bikman grants that it will lead to lower consumption *in the meal*. Of course, if you get hunger faster, or get more hungry in the next meal it's possible it won't matter in the grand scheme of things. That said, for someone with strict eating times, I don't really see how intentional consumption of fiber-rich foods (for the stomach filling effect), won't lead to more satiety overall.
All fiber does is to create bulk, like eating rice cakes, it might make you FEEL full briefly, but it does nothing for the satiety hormones and provides zero nutrition. Same thing for the "drink water" trick. But at least with water sometimes that and/or salt is what you're actually craving so it's useful. But you can't trick hunger that way. Hunger isn't about filling an empty hole, it's about signals from the body in search of certain nutrients. This is why we're always hungry on a high carb, highly processed, low fat diet. Your body is still looking for the nutrients it needs, both macro and micro, so will keep sending hunger signals. There is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate, including fiber. We have no requirements for it and the nutrients are not in the right form or as bioavailable as animal foods, so it does little to really nourish us or turn off the hunger signals.
Dhru: to move forward along the lines of current metabolic debates, a meaningful step would be to consider the work of Dr. D'Adamo on blood type. He has uncovered differences in the amount and type of protein individuals can digest and the types of lectins they react to. You have got to get Dr. D'Adamo on your podcast!!!
Thanks for having Ben, and I have to second all the above positive comments in reference to him! Wondering about DHA, which is a high priority to keep my brain from shrinking but Alaskan cod, which obviously doesn't have any fat, so wondering about which fat to add, and what about salmon, which has more fattiness, but wondering which fat to add, and how often he would recommend, to have seafood, but not be shortchanged on DHA. It seems I feel less satiated after a fish meal.
You don’t have to watch your calories if you’re eating real food. It’s really hard to over eat veg and meat.”Keto” snacks and packaged foods are never really good. If you’re snacking, you aren’t eating enough of the fat/ protein or You’re triggering your insulin and creating hunger for yourself..
As a former binge eater with BED, fasting was a recipe for disaster and bingeing for me personally. I can appreciate it’s helpful for some but after losing 100lbs and maintaining it for 3+ years I’ve learned we cannot discount the psychological component of the individual and a lot of us need to just do what works for us long term and experiment with different ways of improving eating. I didn’t really do as much to clean up my diet until after I had lost my weight and was trying to maintain but even just losing massive weight by cutting calories and counting calories and protein, I got rid of pre-diabetes. Now that I’ve done body recomposition and would like to lose an additional 30 lbs of body fat, I’ve started focusing a lot more on cutting out a lot of ultra processed foods and getting way more whole food while continuing weight training and moving a lot daily. Fasting sometimes happens for me naturally by eating better and paying attention to hunger and satiety but I don’t “fast” intentionally because it triggers binge urges for me personally.
A similar conversation with "Dr. McDougall " would provide another professional point of view on diet, weight, and good health. He has written several "Best Sellers" over the years and operates a facility for recovery from sickness based on food consumption. Dr. McDougall, and his wife, now in their 7th decade, are very thin people with high energy and apparently enjoy good health. I believe he also has a telemed practice. (No affiliation)
In Quebec, I asked my newly graduated GP to request a fasted insulin blood work for which I was willing to pay for at a private lab. She categorically refused. I figure she would not know how to interpret it and/or it may lead to a detrimental impact if ever overlooked by the college of GPs down the road.

Glucose 106 and insulin 15.2, that got me more motivated to avoid all junk food, carbohydrates and keep the lifestyle. Now I am being more rigid with what I eat
Excellent!
Fantastic congratulations
Fasting insulin should run 2.5 to 5ish. Keep it up!
How u test your insuline?
@@irenevalk521 it’s a simple blood test, but you have to ask for it😊
After having experinented with with every diet and protocol for years, I have finally achieved perfection on every metric including lipid profile and body composition and never feel hunger in the following way =
One meal a day consisting of = at least 500gr grass fed steak, 5 organic eggs , 1 can sardines in spring water, 30 gr grass fed butter and one scoop grass fed whey with stivia. Total carbs 3 gr. And 30 min resistance training in a fasted state per day.
Sounds delicious!
I so appreciated the doctor's honest forthright answers to even admitting he's not an expert in different areas yet still clearly giving his voice to other possibilities. Another great interview!!
Dr. Buckman is a really nice man - #9 of 11 children. He is a professor at Bringham Young - obviously a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints.
What a wonderful conversation, with plenty of useful information. Listening to Ben is a absolute pleasure.
Dr Bikman is an exceptional.. exveptional man. Thank you so much for bringing him on. 🙏

Dr.Bikman is Brilliant!!!
" eat protein 1st " that is my new motto!
Like that advice!
Nonlinear, upward spiral journey-I like that way of describing the search for a healthier life. Well done!
What an amazing, knowledgeable, humble, gentle human being. Loved the interview. Thank you
Bikman is the man. He is just so great at explaining.
Please!
CARNIVOE FOR LIFE! IT HEALED EVERY PROBLEM I HAD!
How long have you been carnivore?
@@mad2itch 5 months
@@lesleyannthecarnivore A little over 6 months for me and feeling wonderful. Congrats to you and keep up the good work! Spread the word!!!
@@mad2itch love that for us
What problem u had??
Plant base people say the same
Amazing show, this guest was very informative and helped make insulin resistance make sense. I hope to have this guest back.
In April my fat % was 22.8.
In August came down to 18.2%
I skipped breakfast and had some protein for lunch and did exercises for 3 times a week.
Your getting good advice from those guys!
Love UA-cam when it keeps giving me more and more of Ben Bikman!
Thank you, Dhru & Dr. Bikman for a good conversation! You both seem sincere & your info very helpful.

Just eat less
Wow! This is a very informative interview! Dr Bikman is a wealth of knowledge, very helpful!! Thank you!!!
Thank dr. Bikman for stating your ground on these issues
By design
So far the best advice on this subject. Thank you!😊
My entire family is fat & diabetic. I refuse so I fight by having no carbs. (a few of my children are fighting too) So far 66, no longer obese, and no symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Dr Ben knows insulin. Thanks for the real science @Ben Bikman, InsulinIQ
What an ultimate podcast! Please please must watch this…Thanks so much to both of you! 🙏🇮🇳
Great information... Amazing! Thank you very much for this interview
This interview with Dr Bikman opened new horizons to me. It's true help in understanding and eye opening.
Dr. Bikman is so right on!!!
Another fantastic talk. Great host and guest. Thanks guys!
Done a very good job with this podcast and it is worth watching more than one time because of the information density👍🙏💰
Ben is such an outstanding teacher!!!! 🔥
This blew my mind!!
Thank you guys!
Reverse my fasting insulin with adopting a low carb diet along with IF. Current reading 3.4ulu/ml and HOMA-IR is 0.80
PCOS, Hashimotos, polycythemia vera, 60 years old, 5'3" 218 lbs.
Dr. Bikman is the best!! ❤️🙏🎉
It’s obvious that the daily loading of sugar and simple carbs are driving this problem. But admittance to it and the subsequent corrections might not gel well with the food and healthcare industry.
Extremely informative. Great questions asked too. Thank you
his words at the beginning touched me very much and made me think. aspects that have so far received little attention on the subject of nutrition and illness - thank you!
Dr Lyons is very strict about counting calories and advocates eating low calorie. I agree with dr. Bikman
Bikkman is right about the "satiety focus" is wrong thinking and going backwards to just another way for counting calories
EXCELLENT - thank you Dhru, Dr. Ben Bikman is amazing - and I LOVE how he always explains difficult concepts (what I believe to be difficult, anyway) so well!! :)
So informative ❤Dr bikman is awesome
Thanks …a real dr/expert in the field …not a so called bro science expert …
I really respected Ivor Cummins videos and his analyses of Covid, the lockdowns, epidemiology and all cause mortality graphs throughout the pandemic and how different countries approaches created better or worse outcomes in a holistic way. He's an engineer, not a virologist so he brought a refreshing and novel viewpoint to the topic.
Respected sir.
Best scientific informetion to prevent ,control over weight ,obesity and metabolic syndrome related diseases.
Fantastic podcast! 👏🏻 👌
Question: are we doing this same thing to our animals? Pets and the ones we eat (cows being fed corn & other things)?
Yes so cows and pigs can have leaky gut so if they are grain fed we are exposed to the grain proteins by eating the grain fed meat. And that has all kinds of legal implications.
The reason this has gone global is because America has exported a lot of these “fast food” restaurants. If it’s from America, it seems like the world will accept it and not consider the consequences of doing so.
So true. And other nuances ua-cam.com/video/oEjZk15SXaU/v-deo.html
For me the adventure is Feed the gut biome and it will will care for all the above. I love your scientific research and evidence. God bless YOU
Great insights.
From what I understand: Fiber dilutes stomach acid, so that less nutrients are liberated from food, which can explain why hunger returns sooner.
It’s the most important test
Thank you guys
Love this guy!
Dr. Ben is so good
Great interview Dhru!
Thank you so much
Excellent talk, this “grandma” is going to the gym to lift heavy!!
Hell Yeah! Put on some good music and pre tend you are dancing!
This was legitimately enjoyable. Thank you
There is in general a shortage of doctors. There are almost 0 doctors that work WITH patients and have any real knowledge regarding metabolic health. I am very motivated to stay extremely healthy and mentally competent so I can take care of me.
Love to hear Ben.
Fiber is said to dilute stomach acid, and thereby it leads to less liberation of nutrients from food.
@@maricamaas2326thanks for pointing that out
All fiber does is to create bulk, like eating rice cakes, it might make you FEEL full briefly, but it does nothing for the satiety hormones and provides zero nutrition.
Wow, what a good interview.
Have fun and go with the flow though
Mind over màtter, be resolute
Awesome interview Dhru!
Love your channel and so much gratitude to you.
