一躍アイレムの看板作品となった大ヒットシューティングゲーム「R-TYPE」の続編。プレイヤーは「R-9改」に乗り込み、蘇り逆襲に高ぶる新生バイド帝国の手から宇宙を守ることを目的としている。基本的な操作方法やパワーアップシステムを継承するなど、前作を大きく変更することは避けている。ただし、前作の3種類の武器に加えて、新たに2種類のレーザー系の武器が追加された他、ある一定のタイミングで発射可能な「拡散波動砲」も用意されている。また、グラフィックに関しては、前作よりもかなり渋め。全6ステージ。
ストーリー:
帝国が蘇った。それは新たなるパワーを得、異次元空間で急激な進化を遂げていたのだ。再び恐怖と戦慄にさらされた宇宙を救うため、人類は強化型R-9を前線へと出撃させた。新生バイド帝国の逆襲がここに始まる。

The sequel to the hugely successful original finds the evil Bydo Empire once again intent on the destruction of all mankind in this sideways scrolling, six-level shoot-em-up.
The innovative weapons system of the original game - the 'Beam Weapon' and 'Force Pod' - make a welcome return and remain unchanged for the sequel.
The tight, demanding gameplay and high emphasis on correct usage of the weapons system also return - although the sequel is, if anything, even more demanding than its already unforgiving predecessor; with more durable enemies and trickier level design.
R-Type II features three new weapon shot types:
Green - Search Laser - fires semi-homing lasers that can bend at 45° angles.
Grey - Shotgun Laser - fires large shells that travel a short distance before exploding powerfully.
Scatter Bomb - drops bombs to the ground; when these explode, the explosion scatters forwards along the ground. This is a supporting weapon that can be equipped instead of missiles.
In addition to the new weapons, R-type II's Beam Weapon has received an upgrade. As with the first game, holding down the fire button makes a power gauge fill up, releases the button then unleashes a powerful plasma shot. For the sequel, however, continuing to hold down the button causes the gauge to charge up further. This 'double-charged' gauge flashes blue and red and releases an even more powerful plasma burst.

初めてゲーセンでハマったゲームであり、かつ初めてゲーセンの実機でワンコインクリアしたゲーム。うまい人のプレーを必死で見ていろいろ学びました。BGMと波動砲の溜めがリンクするので、動画見ながら「このタイミングで溜め始めるのか」とか「このルートは思わんかった」など、この動画で何杯もお代わりできます。アップありがとうございました😊

Even the arcade version has the occasional bit of slow-down. The freed R-9s who start backing you up at the final battle are about as much use as a fart in a jar.

The game could have been so much better had it had better audio. R-type was trying to do something similar to Gradius but Gradius had far superior sound and that gave it the edge to me, R-types sound, sounds so cheap.
Sometimes I look at stages in various games and I wonder why the heck would someone build this? What purpose does it serve? How was it paid for? What do these enemies do with there free time when not being attacked? Does the stage boss just sit idle waiting for things to aggravate them? Etc etc...
Neat. Sometimes it kinda happens to me. With the answers you could be write a novel I guess. And many R-Type bosses basically sit on a throne, like the Bydo princes and kings they are.
For Bydo at least it makes sense - they're a highly mutating hive hellbent on evolving and killing/torturing humanity. They literally have nothing better to do than form a big bug factory, to abduct or infest any given city, satellite, colony, or just glue space junk together and have a go at humanity.
There's also a time paradox where to fight the Bydo, humans start using the Bydo/Force tech, resulting in them... inventing/becoming the Bydo.
Who then go towards the past to exterminate humanity because that's what they were made to do.
And every time humanity pushes back the clock, and learns more, they make the Bydo more real/closer to reality as they try to make a better weapon (to kill Bydo).

細かく描き込んであるはずなのに、イマイチ印象に残らないグラフィック。
前作の様にステージごとのカラーが定まってないせいだろうか?
赤系統の明るい色が殆どなくくすんだ色使いのせいってもあると思う。
アイレムのアクションやシューティングゲーム は暗い感じなBGM ばっかりだったな。
ストーリーも暗くてハッピーエンドが殆どないのもタイトーみたい。
設定からしてかなり鬱設定です

This looks so familiar. Is Super R-type based off this game? It looks just like it, that and I have that one.
All the R Type games seem to just keep borrowing and repeating things found in the others.
Super R-Type is the SNES remake of R-Type II. It is also the inferior version.
Funny how this game says it's a crime to play it outside of Japan, when the game has English text

これが、拡散波動砲の醍醐味ですよ。
拡散波動砲の弾一発一発が通常波動砲と同等の威力です。
そして、適切な距離から撃てば一点に当たります。
一点に収束=数十発の波動砲の直撃を受けるのです。
うまいな、しかし、良くできたゲーム、完成度は高い(笑)
