- The world can be a cold and cruel place, so sometimes it's nice to just talk about the things you love isn't it?
Here I'm simply going to talk about five of my favourite games of all time. No big analysis or critique - just gushing praise about some games that I love.
Don't even try telling me any of these are rubbish - I won't hear a word of it!

Fancy a lengthy video about another game I love? ua-cam.com/video/iGUVehTipgw/v-deo.html here is a deep dive into the Lovecraftian survival horror classic ETERNAL DARKNESS
Just came here from that video it was amazing
A fellow Golden Sun enjoyer. This was one of the games that shaped my childhood and my introduction to JRPGs. I feel it gets overshadowed since it's a GBA game.
It's just a goddamn masterpeice isn't it? I can hardly even believe it exists!
Golden Sun was incredible. Remember staying up past 3 am every night playing it until my hands and eyes hurt. How they pulled it off on a Gameboy ill never know.
Where is that dark souls III poster from behind you?!? It’s incredible and I need to exercise my consumerist rights. Also love the channel! Niche and just for the likes of me
I still get chills when I hear Chrono Trigger overworld music
I played Chrono Trigger on the Nintendo growing up with my mom. That and the Aladdin game were so much fun and we'd play them together for hours. Great games and great memories.
That sounds like a fantastic childhood my dude - hold onto those memories!
Pathologic 2 is the most miserable thing ever created - and I mean that lovingly. The devs had an exactly perfect vision and executed it more masterfully than anything else I've ever played. Playing it is the most frustrating and confusing experience I've had in games, but I'm amazed to this day by its meticulously crafted experience.
Absolutely spot on. It's a disgusting, cruel and torturous experience but so perfectly crafted to draw out all of those emotions. I'd love to do a playthrough of it on stream as I think it would make for such an emergent time!
Might be a few minutes late to the party, but this was a fantastic video man. Iv dragged sovmany friends into the world of Yharnam. I remember a wonderful summer filled with golden sun. About to reenter that world on the online switch thingy. Great video love to see the passion for our keystone experiences.
Glad you enjoyed it! It's nice to see some love for the first video I ever made haha! I think it's not so bad all things considered!
I also really enjoy hearing people going on about things they love. Thanks for sharing! Your enthusiasm is palpable, just like in your retrospectives. I've been meaning to play Chrono Trigger for ages, so I'll take your advice soon.
Something interesting to me is that of my top 5 favorite games--Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Medal of Honor, Hollow Knight, Ocarina of Time, and Metal Gear Solid 2--I played 3 of them for the first time in the past year! Ocarina of Time felt timeless playing it in 2022, and I honestly have no idea how playing stealth games will go ever again after playing the MGS games this year. Hollow Knight introduced me to Metroidvanias, which introduced me to Symphony of the Night and your first video... While I've only played them recently, I can easily rank those games next to my favorite 3D platformer (Crash) and favorite FPS (MoH). Keep up the great content!
I couldn't recommend Chrono Trigger more - I'm sure you'll love it!
That's a great list yourself - I really need to get around to playing Hollow Knight at some point! I'm sure I'd love it considering my love of Metroid & Castlevania
This was an incredibly impassioned video and it's nice to hear so much about, if I'm honest, a few games I have never heard of! Plus I had never noticed how DBZ Chrono Trigger is! I've heard you talk about Golden Sun so many times before but never checked it out myself! Seeing the footage, it looks great! Good vid matey! Thanks!
Thanks so much man! Yeah it's crazy isn't it because they're both so famous in their own right you don't necessarily notice it but once you do CT is absurdly Dragonball! I've really got to play it again ASAP!
These are pretty interesting choices, refreshingly different than the usual picks of people. Strat-Edgy Productions shouted shouted you out and made me come here.
I just finished your Dino Crisis retrospective and can't wait for more videos!
Yeah he's an awesome guy with some great videos so it was really cool to see that!
Golden sun was the first game i got with my gba for christmas. I was so hyped when i heard they were stocking the lost age at a store that i biked almost 50 miles, mostly in the rain to pick it up. Best decision i ever made.
surely there isn't only 5 fav games.
we need a part 2 ASAP!
I've actually been thinking about making a sequel to this and talking about 5 more video games! This was a lot of fun to put together so why not!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame
well...shit. it's been over a year now. we're waiting.
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Where's the sequel?!??!? Aaaaah!!! Your videos are so well done and this one really opened up my eyes to four amazing titles that I never knew of / thought much of. To me, your opinion is highly valuable
Hey man, I just discovered your channel and bingewatched all of the videos. I absolute love the content, keep going strong!
Thanks so much Christoph! So glad you enjoy my videos! I'm currently working on another really big one which should hopefully be out soon!
Way to start a list lol I had to fast forward as I am currently trying to beat bloodborne for the first time. It’s a absolutely amazing game. Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece. All the endings and even on the 3ds it has extra dungeons. I remember being pissed and devastated when Lavos first came up. Awesome video!
Haha I'm so sorry my dude! You definitely made the right decision as discovering everything about BB on your own is an amazing experience!
I know there is just something so timeless and pure about Chrono Trigger, looking at all the footage for this has made me want to play it again so bad... Here we go again I guess!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame to me the most frustrating part of Chrono Trigger is Chrono Cross. I have tried for almost 20 years at different times to get far in this game and I just cannot get into it.
I find it fascinating how there's a generation, several in fact, who state they came to love gaming through obtuse yer rewarding difficulty through the Souls games. I garnered satisfaction in a similar regard through Hidden & Dangerous 1 & 2 and the OG Commandos games on PC.
I'm not sure what generation you think I am? I played both Commandos and Beyond the call of duty when they released and they're a completely different type of challenge to the souls games. They are a combination of complexity and strategy, something which has always been present in PC gaming but console games have a completely different history
I really struggle to pick my favourite games simply because I haven't played too many. I'd say the most important ones for me are AC Black Flag, Destiny 2, Far Cry 5 (I'd say 6 but I haven't finished it yet), fallout New Vegas, and this wonderful little point and click games called Machinarium. I know most of them are pretty mainstream, but they really helped me get into video games. There's other ones that did help (things like overwatch, Star Wars BF 2, and Jedi fallen order), but they're not quite as influencial. Unfortunately I just don't have that much time or money, so I really struggle to get into gaming, or even keep up with it. As a result most of the games I do have I haven't finished, even New Vegas, and the live service ones I've basically abandoned because it got too much, especially D2. Which is a shame because I do love gaming, and channels like yours only help make that love greater. Learning about games that I'll probably never play makes me realise haw vast of an industry it is and how every aspect of creativity can be incorporated into it.
Oh man I have to say I also absolutely love Machinarium! I got it from the humble bundle about a decade ago when it used to be donation based and just loved everything about it! I've always been fascinated with point and click games and the art and aesthetic of that game is just great! I still listen to the soundtrack all the time!
Also my dude I would absolutely say that there is nothing wrong at all with just engaging with the medium through videos! There are some games that I feel like I know intimately because of the sort of second hand experience I get through a long essay! I own a copy of Tokimeki Memorial which is in Japanese, which I cannot speak, solely because I watched the Action Button six hour review of it and the video had a profound effect on me!
So yeah enjoy it however you want - even if that means not even playing them! That's totally cool!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Thank you for being so supportive! It's always great to find people who accept and engage with members of the community no matter they engage with it. You make genuinely fantastic content and I can tell you're passionate about your topics which is alway great to see! I wish you well on your future videos and will keep a keen eye out for your next upload.
Edit: I just remembered that I took a robotics and game design course last year and ended up making a very rudimentary point and click adventure/puzzle game, and Machinarium was a huge influence in me choosing to do that and it ended up being my huge final assessment piece. The course teacher really loved it so I guess it's influenced my life in more way than one.
Hey there! Stumbled upon your channel somehow down the youtube gaming rabbit hole.
Pretty pleasantly surprised by the variety of list, especially Golden Sun and Chrono Trigger - the 2 games I've played and absolutely love.
Also, the only souls game I've completed and blasted through was Elden Ring - this game was and is truly magical, I expected to hate it due to the challenge but found it more accessible and extremely rewarding.
He changes the Golden Sun text boxes to purple, too! 4:47
I've been so on the fence about starting Pathologic 2 but now I think i'll give it a play through
It's genuinely such a rewarding experience if you are happy to put the time in. I would almost advise peeking at a guide every now and then because it's so damn difficult! Once you get to grips with it, it's fantastic!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Planescape torment is incredible. Out of all the black isle/bioware infinity engine titles, it was the only one I actually completed it in its entirety when I first got it (I did eventually go back to finish BG1 and BG2 - including expansions - years later, which were great games in their own right, as well as icewind dale) because the story, the player character and the world was so captivating and unique, and the party members you get were so memorable and unique. I don't think any game I've played actually came as close to it ever since in terms of the narrative - not even its spiritual successor, torment: tides of numenera
It really is special isn't it. Me and my friends always quote "Updated my journal" to each other still to this day!
I have to say... you really have great taste for videogames. I'm glad I discovered your channel!
Thanks AJ! Glad you're enjoying the channel!
It took me maybe 5 tries over a period of 5 years to finally get into Planescape Torment. And yep, it's probably my favourite story in any video game. Awesome setting too, but I think my favourite setting ever has to be Arcanum.
I'm really thinking that I should cover it on the channel actually - there is just so much utter beauty in the writing. I think I could probably talk for about 3 hours about it...
Did you mod the game in any way? I think I messed up my game and that ludicrous shakespearian dialogue at the bridge (with the scoundrel and his lackey) isn't triggering, it's just plain english after modding.
MY top 5 in the order I played them. Not saying these are the best games but they all had a special impact on me at the time.
Streets of rage 2
Zelda - Links awakening -1993
Super Streetfighter 2
Devil may cry 3
Resident evil 4
Nice to see Devil May Cry 3 getting some love - that's such a great game!
Excellent call on Golden Sun, a real masterpiece!
If you like that, I would highly recommend Shining Force 3 on the Saturn. It was Camelot's magnum opus that they worked on right before Golden Sun. Split into 3 games; "scenarios" with a fourth bonus game after that. You carry over your save data just like GS from game to game, and all of the characters come together at the end, again just like in GS. I think it's the best SRPG ever, just a phenomenal experience!
It's crazy - I've never actually played any of Camelot's pre-Golden Sun RPGs and I really need to eventually get around to it! Shining Force looks right up my street especially as I've been doing lots of writing about the Saturn!
The 5 games that really impacted my life as a gamer:
1. Starcraft Broodwar. It got me into competitive RTS, I've also made real life friends on a forum back in the day. And they're still my friends. No other game did that for me.
2. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (and all other DLC): The best game design I've ever seen. Just so well thought out. All the systems interact in a meaningful way. Endless fun.
3. Assetto Corsa: Get a wheel and a VR headset. Sit down, start AC and prepare for your mind to be blown. If you're into cars this is peak gaming.
4. The Witcher 3: The first game that showed my what "next gen" is about. Immersive and just so incredibly detailed. Memorable characters, great voice acting, fantastic side quests.
5. Commander Keen 4: The first real game I got back in the 90s. I got instantly hooked. And it's still a really good platformer today.
Close but no cigar: Thief 1, Mafia 1, Microprose F1 Grand Prix, Might and Magic 3: Isles of Terra, Pathologic 1/2, Skyrim (espcially with hundreds of mods)
Some pretty damn great choices - I remember playing Commander Keen so much when I was younger round at a friends house. I couldn't believe how in-depth it actually was with the map screens / optional areas!
Just got done watching your Eternal Darkness video and although i never had any interest or experience with that game, you had me hooked. Great stuff, man.
I always take that as the ultimate complement! Thanks very much!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame np. N ty for the video man. Very insightful stuff.
Super video and some really interesting stuff in there. Golden Sun is my fave for the music alone!
I'm glad you liked it ❤️
My favorites are Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (and all of the other main MH games), Peter Jackson's King Kong (PS2 version specifically), Dino Crisis 2 (Still experiencing 1 for the first time), Halo 3 (First game that my wife got really into while playing with me, making her a Halo fan as much as me) and Ultimate Spiderman on the PS2
Honorable mentions to Dino Stalker and The Lost World Jurassic Park Arcade game
Those are some great picks - Peter Jackson's King Kong is a seriously underrated game!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame severely!
Planescape torment had a profound impact on my preconceived notion regarding good writing in games, before that I'd only played Disco elysium and considered it to be one of the best CRPG ever made but after going through planescape I realized that although both are different, planescape is the greater predecessor against Disco elysium. If planescape hadn't existed the world may not have seen disco.
If only there are games with writing and story as good as it, I want to play games that are more personal in their stories like the one about the nameless one. There are too many games that ask you to save the world in the end, with your friends and girlfriend by your side, space adventures or revenge tales that end with you never facing the brunt of justice or not empathizing to the pain your character feels when receiving such punishment. There is an innate pain that should be addressed in every character, their highest and lowest moments felt, their raison d'etre felt even if there is none. Set out to do that one task and don't fail, that's what planescape did perfectly.
Absolutely agree with you 100%. Along with Silent Hill 2, I think it is the most profound experience I've ever had while playing a video game. I'm considering putting together a really in-depth look at the game as I don't believe anyone's ever done one that tries to tie together the game's fantastic nuances.
Great vid man. Sending you love and prompt recovery. 🍻
Nice video, I probably had a very similar experience with Golden Sun as you did as a child, it completely blew me away and the two GBA games are some of my favorites ever.
My top 10-ish games in rough order:
1. Cave Story
2. Braid
3. Bayonetta
4. Golden Sun & The Lost Age
5. Metroid Fusion & Zero Mission
6. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
7. Dark Souls
8. Portal
9. Shadow of the Colossus
10. Catherine
I really want to put together a lengthy retrospective about the two GBA Golden Suns - I feel like they're kinda underrated now despite the reputation they have. People don't realise quite HOW good they are
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I agree that they are somewhat underrated. The one thing that could be improved on would be the normal random battles; they are often pretty trivial and often disrupt the puzzle solving. That is a pretty common problem in JRPGs though. Otherwise the visuals, story, music, Djinn system, psynergy, weapons and dungeons are all really good. The battle system also really shines in boss fights.
I often think what a 3D Golden Sun game could be like if proper love and thought was given to it. The Lighthouses and dungeons could take inspiration from 3D Zelda (but still keep it distinctly Golden Sun with psynergy and Djinn). The battle system could maybe take some inspiration from Final Fantasy XIII in the sense that it is skill-based and dynamic, but emphasizes co-operation within party members and djinn usage.
I think the game could lose some of the JRPG elements, for instance it could be interesting if the player is not allowed to grind, so that the challenge remains high and easier to keep consistent.
Golden Sun is a very special series for me and it shouldn't be afraid to question conventions and innovate in areas where it is needed. Sadly I don't think this will ever happen since Nintendo doesn't really have any interest in the series anymore, but maybe a similar sort of game inspired by Golden Sun will emerge one day.
For me it was playing Shenmue for the first time on a refurbished Dreamcast before games like GTA even existed. i remember a friend describing Shenmue to me and I was skeptical a game could even be open world, like sure buddy you can control a character walking through city streets...he must be exaggerating... But it was a magical experience sitting in my bedroom playing late into the morning, just living in that world like a tourist
Honestly, I played Shenmue for the first time a few years ago and I really felt like that experience is still very much in there. It's one of those games people love to say as aged poorly but I think if you can get your mind into the state of enjoying the slow pace and exploratory atmosphere - it's really great!
I’m gonna go for my top 5:
Dark souls
Morrowind
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Pokemon Crystal
RuneScape
Man Runescape is a real shout in there - that's such an underrated game to be totally honest. I watched a huge documentary about the history of the game and Jagex the other day and it's crazy how small it all started and how big it is now!
Great selection of games! I have a hard time pinning down what my top 5 would be. My first draft of top 5 would be Dark Souls, BOTW, God Of War (2018), Oblivion, The Witcher 3. I prefer fantasy as you can see. These sorts of things are always interesting because it is always evolving and changing as I go through life. I am sure in 5 years I would have a different top 5.
Those are some seriously good choices - it was between Dark Souls and Bloodborne for me and man, God of War 2018 was also an absolutely incredible experience!
You're spot on about how they are always changing... I just played Silent Hill 2 and that could have easily got in even while I was editing this!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame The interconnected map of Dark Souls 1 is what pushes it over the edge for me. Regardless Bloodborne is an amazing game and my 2nd favorite souls like. God Of War hit at the right time for me since the game dealt with fatherhood so much and I had just had a daughter when I played the game. BOTW I wish I could remove from my mind and experience again. Such an amazing world that game has. The Witcher 3 is flawed but I spent months with that game. When I finally finished the game I almost felt empty inside after having to say goodbye to that story. Oblivion is flawed but my nostalgia keeps it beautiful in my mind. Nothing has compared to when I first played the dark brotherhood storyline.
@@NexusRex7 I will never stop loving the Dark Brotherhood quest line in Oblivion - one of the best side quests of all time!
Hearing that Golden Sun battle music... oof. Such a great game. Great list!
Awesome video, mate. Love your content!!!
Thanks very much!
I like these games you mentioned except for one. Chrono Trigger is a game I love. Like you, i emulated it at 13 years old. I went through a “rebellious” phase with games where I told myself the new games weren’t able to capture the same “game” feel. It’s true, but to think modern games couldn’t create anything interesting was silly. Chrono sucked me in and never let me go until I finished it. I never replayed it as I was going through a deep catalogue of classics. Legendary addition to any top games list.
I think we went through a very similar phase my friend! When I discovered emulation (that was also free no less) I was completely absorbed into the world of older games (it wasn't even really retro at that point!). I think I never really left that phase and will always have a particularly large love for the pre-HD era.
As someone who can pretty confidently say Rain World is amongst my top favorite games, it really feels like Pathologic 2 would be right up my alley judging by how people recommend it.
(My other top games include Outer Wilds, Hollow Knight, and then it's a free-for-all between any of the Pikmin games and non-other M Metroids)
I highly recommend checking it out! It's absolutely brutal and you may well need to start over quite a few times but when it clicks and you get sucked into it's world - there is really nothing else like it
Pathologic 2 is on sale on steam right now for $10.49 until April 20th 2023
And you can get the DLC for $2.99
I just bought it
Hopefully lots of people check it out. It's truly fantastic
So many masterpieces there, good list and good taste 😳👍
always awesome to see where games have their roots and about the games that made them :) Keep it up!
Thanks for watching! Hopefully you enjoy my others too!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame already did the Prince of Persia one :) and the Jade Empire is next on the list.
Btw. Did you ever play Sanitarium? That seems right up your alley from a story perspective :)
An interesting list. Chrono Trigger is also one of my fave games ever, and games such as Metroid Prime and Zelda: Ocarina/Majora's Mask got me to like video games. I'm also now intrigued by Pathologic 2.
I highly recommend checking it out! It's a really clever game that I wish more people knew about. Just know it's unforgiving as hell and you'll likely need to start over quite a few times!
Of these games, I've only played Planescape Torment. I thought it was pretty cool, but I never ended up finishing it. I spent a lot of time trying to unlock the robot character so I could have a full roster. When I found out there was an additional playable character, I stopped playing because I didn't want to leave any of my companions behind.
You should really revisit it! It's got one of the most satisfying endings in any game I've ever played
ur vids are so well made dude
Thanks so much Jay!
Bloodborne is up there for me too. I haven't played any of the other games you mentioned, but I wanna check them out. For me:
1. Dark Souls
2. Bloodborne
3. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
4. Rocket League
5. Majoras Mask
That's a pretty damn solid list - I almost included Majoras Mask in mine!
Loved Golden Sun and Chrono Trigger but the swansong of the SNES is definitely Tales of Phantasia. Nice video.
I think I just see CT as it because it was such a big deal - you're certainly right about some other late releases one upping it. Terranigma and Star Ocean both do it for me
Great video mate, Chrono Trigger is such an incredible game. I've never heard of Pathologic 2 before!
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch it my dude! Yeah P2 is definitely one of those hyper niche games but something about it just radiated with me so massively. I really didn't do it justice in the video either! I'm glad it's shown it to a few more people though!
Snatcher blew my mind on Sega CD as a wee youngin'
That is a damn fine game. I've only played it emulated on a PSP years ago so I'd love to get the full console experience one day!
Pathologic 2 looks so interesting. Have to check it out!
It's an absolutely fantastic game honestly and still extremely underrated. Just be wary as it's as punishing as something like dark souls - so damn worth it though, the atmosphere is unparalleled.
Pathologic 2 is one of those games that I absolutely dread playing but love hearing about, the way everything is presented and directed is just perfect to me
Oh it's utterly miserable to play but in the best way possible. I had some degree of foreknowledge from watching videos about Pathologic 1 but jesus, I can imagine that going into 2 with no prior knowledge would be impossible! That being said it's such an inventive and fascinating game - fingers crossed we get the bachelor's path eventually!
Golden Sun is such a great game I wish they'd bring it back
You and me too dude - I'd be happy with Isaac in Smash right? haha
Before some spoilers for planescape torment: Check out Tunic if you haven't already. I'm an old videogame veteran and I love non-standard games that can surprise me. Tunic was one that initially looked by the numbers, but the more i played the more often it threw my expectations over again and again.
Ohter games that really did it for me were Papers Please, Return of the Obra Dinn, Outer Wilds, Hollow Knight, Factorio, Undertale and Into the Breach. Wether it was gameplay or story, these are some of my favorite games of all time.
SPOILERS FOR PLANESCAPE
You said the game has answers for all the questions you might have about the nameless one, but that is not entirely true. Iirc it is never explicitly stated what heinous crime against existence he committed. I think the going theory is that he was the one to start the endless war in the hells, but there is no clear event given what he is trying to atone for.
Some amazing games in that list - I'm a huge fan of Hollow Knight and Papers Please! Both of them highlight just how much creativity is in the smaller studio space these days!
Also you're very right about the nameless one's crime although I am certainly in the camp that took the final cutscene to mean he started the Blood war!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Return of the Obra Dinn is by the same guy who made Papers Please. Although they don't have much in common it really shows to me how great Lucas Pope can iterate around a core vision.
If you take any game from those suggestions to heart, I#d advise you to look into Outer Wilds. It's best played completely blind, but I'm certain you won't regret it. I HAVE heard people regretting getting spoiled on Outer Wilds before playing it themselves though ;)
Golden Sun is so good. If you like that you should definitely check out the Shining series, in particular Shining The Holy Ark for Sega Saturn. Same kinda graphical style and an amazing game. Sakuraba did the soundtrack for that game as well.
Oh I really need to play The Holy Ark - I might even stream a bit of it at some point!
I played Golden Sun as a young man and absolutely loved it. I still own both games and I've tried to pick it up again and but for some reason I can't get back into it.
Dude Pathologic is such a great game, a true masterpiece
I really wish it enjoyed more of a reputation. It's the single most terrifying game I've ever played
Yeah, lack of Chrono Trigger in PAL was rough.. I imported and got a converter cartridge, which had a habit of wiping my save file from time to time
That sounds brutal - I couldn't have handled losing my CT file!
I could never pick a favorite game of all time, but i can say one of my formative gaming experiences that made me fall in love with gaming was definitely Halo 1 and 2. The storytelling, action, and multiplayer blew me away as a kid who had only played Nintendo at that point.
Halo 1 and 2 really were special releases. The hype, the innovation, the story - it was a special time to own an Xbox!
Chrono trigger swansong of the cartridge era ❤️ IFAVG couldnt have put this better, the only thing I'll add is that you don't need a SNES to play it! There's an amazing app game for android and iPhone which I recently completed my 11th playthrough of the game on, which you can literally play anywhere! when your commuting on train or waiting for a mate or even in the queue for burger King 👌
I think since I first beat it on emulation, I've played it on SNES, DS, Steam and on my mobile. All of that and there is a PS1 version that I've never played that has the beautiful anime cutscenes in it! It's definitely almost time for another playthrough of it
The game that truly made love video games was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
There are other games that I hold near and dear to my heart but SW:KOTOR is the one that’s closest to it.
I would say that's likely number 6 on my list. What an absolutely rock solid sci fi RPG - almost every single element is exceptional
100% agree with you on Bloodborne. One thing that I adore about it is the insight system. The way some enemies change and some become visible after you gain insight is so cool. There are not many games that use the medium to their full potential but Bloodborne is one of them. You wouldn't be able to do an insight system in a book, movie or show. It's only possible in gaming. Same goes for Nier: Automata :)
I’d argue that Outer Wilds, a game released in the same year as Pathologic 2, blends story and gameplay as well as it is. Both are two of the best games I’ve ever played.
I’ve been convinced to play Golden Sun.
I have pathologic 2 but I need a handheld game..
Honestly you won't regret it! It's an absolute masterpiece of storytelling and expansive RPG gameplay in the handheld format. I really can't believe how great it looks sounds and plays even today!
i love hollow knight, Pascal's wager, remnant from the ashes, shovel knight. for franchises silent hill, resident evil and castlevania i wish i had more time to enjoy and love all of these things😊
Some really solid choices! I can't help but love Shovel Knight as well!
mic sounds MUCH better! nice one
Thanks man! Was a bit of a pain to learn how to record the video and audio separately but I think it's come out okay! I've learnt the benefits of doing a clap at the start to line stuff up haha
@@IFinishedAVideoGame yeh the click track is a good technique
My favourite games would be ICO, Project Zero, Silent Hill 2, Metroid Prime 1 & 2, Zelda-Ocarina Of Time & Wind Waker, Psychonauts, Beyond Good & Evil, Half-Life 1 & 2, Ratchet And Clank, Jak And Daxter, Portal 1 & 2, Resident Evil 1 (remake 2002) & Resident Evil 4
Pretty awesome list you got there - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the next few retrospectives!
Thanks for the vid!
My favourites are Kingdom Come Deliverance and Monster hunter freedom unite 🧡
My most played franchises:
The elder Scrolls
Mount & blade
Monster hunter
Runescape
Gran turismo
You're welcome! I really need to get around to playing Kingdom Come Deliverance. It looks like exactly my kind of game
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Yess, please do !
really great list!! also, where'd you get that dark souls 3 poster 😳
It was made by an artist in Germany and I'm not sure if they make them anymore! It's honestly one of my favourite possessions as it's such a cool 80s style design!
Pathologic is a strange game but sometimes the strangest are the best? Im glad they got the resources to finally make a sequel.
Great video dude - I absolutely love Bloodborne
Me too man! The artwork on the wall shows it!
It really hurts my eyes reading from monitors, i never could get passed the first hours of Planescape. Any tips ?
Unfortunately not really. It is a very reading heavy game - maybe find a longplay on UA-cam where the player does voice acting?
Honestly amazing picks
Thanks so much for watching dude glad you enjoyed the video!
Totally agree with Golden Sun, the GBA games were just AMAZING. The first one was actually my very first GBA game. 2 things about it I feel need to be mentioned to complete this though. 1) you could transfer your save with a link cable if you had access to one as well as a second GBA, and 2) the Golden Sun game on DS... I have no idea what exactly it's missing but it completely lost the feel that the GBA games had, which I realized was a big part of what made those so great.
Oh it was just a brief overview - I'll be doing a lengthy retrospective on the two GBA games very soon!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Nice! I'm really looking forward to seeing that one!
And if you can touch on the DS game enough to explain why it feels like it lost so much compared to the originals, that would be a huge bonus. This is something I've tried to figure out but failed...
pathalogic 2 is my second favourite game after dark souls! Glad to see it here
It's such a cleverly designed game - I can't believe more people haven't played it!
Shadow hearts, chrono cross, legend of dragoon just put me in my happy place.
Goddam those are great choices. Shadow hearts is so good
Did you used to have a video about that talks about Pokémon nuzlocks? Trying to rewatch it but maybe it was another channel
I did but I de-listed it as the tone didn't really fit with the rest of the channel. I have been thinking about remaking it though (as I'm planning on doing another nuzlocke run over on twitch!)
@@IFinishedAVideoGame okay thanks for clearing that up at least
pathologic 2 needs more love. that game is one of the only games i have ever actively replayed and it just makes me "feel" some sort of way just by thinking about it
Absolutely I think it's one of the most engrossing video games I've ever played. I'd love to do a playthrough of it sometime and re-experience everything especially considering how differently everything would turn out
@@IFinishedAVideoGame would love to see you do a retrospective on it
It would be a tough one because I believe Ice Pick are still working on it - it's just that the war in Ukraine has really affected them.
Mario Luigi Superstar Saga was my favorite GameBoy Advance game.
I'm a little older so mine would be .. streetfighter 2 , skies of arkadia, willow, blue dragon, gears of war series, final fight, moonstone, damm I've just realised I have a lot more favourites 😂😂😂 can not list them all
That's a goddamn great list though. Skies of Arcadia and Street Fighter 2 are some of my favourites ever games as well!
What do you think of Planescape Tides of Numenera? Do I need to play the first one?
So that is actually not a sequel to Planescape! It's made by a lot of the same people and has similar presentation and themes but actually has nothing to do with Planescape: Torment! You should absolutely just play Planescape before Numenera though - it's substantially better in my opinon
5. Sonic Adventure
4. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
3. GTA: Vice City
2. Star Wars: KOTOR
1. Shenmue
That is a damn solid list
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Thank you! Your's has a couple games I've never played that sound very intesting.
06:08 Maaaan, those numbers are totally wrong.
Maximum GBA cartridge size is 256 megaBIT, not megaBYTE, which is 32MB max. Also, Golden Sun 1&2 games cartridges are 8MB & 16MB respectively.
GBA RAM sizes are (copied from wiki): 32 KILOBYTE + 96 kilobyte VRAM (internal to CPU); 256 kilobyte DRAM (external to CPU).
Only correct information was about the 16MhZ CPU.
It makes the achievement of GS games on GBA even greater tho :)
Also, great videos. Keep up the good work.
Not sure how I managed to do that - thanks for providing the correction!
Where is that dark souls three poster from? It is incredible and I need to exercise my consumerist need ha. Also love the channel ✊ niche and just my bag
EDIT - Never mind, I found it. Either way you’ve made me day
Good to hear you found it! My girlfriend bought it for me ages ago and I'm not sure she remembers where it's from! It is absolutely badass though
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Quite possibly the best From Software piece of art I’m yet to see. Ordered and on its way.
Nice bonus that the content is exactly what I scroll YT for. Keep on keeping on brother.
Love Chrono Trigger, and Bloodborne. I must give Planescape Torment and Pathologic 2 a go.😅
I highly recommend them - both fantastically creative and interesting stories!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Yes..Pathologic 2 has become..unavoidable. Most of the town hates me.. It's a truly unique experience
I love that youtube is recomending me so many smaller tallented youtubers
Thanks so much - hope you enjoy!
So does that make Chrono Trigger or Bloodborne your favorite game of all time?
In the interesting of sharing and celebrating the good in the world, my 5 favorite games ever are:
5) Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
4) Final Fantasy IX
3) Nier: Replicant
2) Red Dead Redemption
1) Red Dead Redemption II
That's a really strong five!
Honestly I wouldn't say that this list is in any sort of order. On any day I could find myself loving one more than another! At the moment I'm dying to replay Pathologic so that might be nearer the top right now!
I want to get into Pathologic 2. I tried to play it, but was just so confused. Is there a guide or something for a novice Pathologic person to get used to the gameplay or give me idea how to get used to the game?
So I think because the game is structured around set days - you could maybe use a guide for the first few days and then go solo once you have a grasp on the mechanics. The game does actually slowly introduce every concept to you but I think that might be a way to make it gentler!
I would say my top 5 for this topic would be
5.Pokemon Fire red/leaf green
4.Star Wars Battlefront II
3.Super mario galaxy
2. Legend of zelda:Link to the Past
1.Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Stronk list!
I really thought u will mention "Last of us" ... PS. I found ur channel today I m loving it.
Sadly not! I do really enjoyed TLOU1 but I wasn't super hot on the second game. Gonna make another video like this soon with 5 more games!
I can't believe no one ever told me to play Golden Sun before. Thank you!!!
I hope you do - it's a goddamn great duology and really shows what the GBA could do in the right hands
The pathologic part about sentient plague is pretty hard spoiler imo
I mean only if you've played the game - there is no way someone would watch this and then 20 hours Pathologic 2 release what I meant!
Chrono Trigger really is that good and while he said he played it at 13 some might say nostalgia is playing a part and im sure it is but take it from someone who payed it in their 20's and what was considered the worse port of it to boot on the ps1. Chrono Trigger is well worth it, get the game if you are into RPGs and fall in love with it just like Matt and myself did. Also Golden Sun is also well worth a play through as well.
Absolutely! It hasn't aged a day and is still the finest 2D JRPG in my view
great video, my favorite games are final fantasy 7 and breath of the wild
This convinced me to buy atleast a couple games. ❤️
That's awesome! Which ones did you decide to pick up!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I sadly never had a PlayStation, always only had PC so couldn't play bloodborne. After seeing this i was like "fk it" and borrowed my cousins PS4 and bloodborne. 🤣
Bought Pathalogic and Planescape too. 🤣
That is like a couple months sorted 🙈 couldn't thank you enough.
@@basit_manzoor_ absolutely my dude! You're gonna really enjoy all three I'm sure! They're all masterpieces!
I see you're a man of culture! 🧐 very good taste!
Thank you! Maybe I should put together another and put my taste to the test again
P A T H O L O G I C! Please make a video about it, I need more content
Maybe one day the internet will be ripe for a 5 hour Pathologic video! It really is a fantastic little game that deserves more attention!
Never played any of these games. I confess I don't get the appeal of hard games and extremely long games. Guess I'm too old for this 😅
Cool video anyway, it's cool to see other people talk about their passion
It's really because it adds a journey aspect (either overcoming the game or finally seeing the end) that's separate from the game itself. I've always been a fan of super long things (give me some prog rock and Stephen king anyday) so it suits me perfectly!
I wonder as you played Chrono Trigger have you ever played Terranigma? I think they play in the same league.
I have actually and you're right it's an incredibly good game! The only reason I don't rate it higher is because I've never actually completed it so the second half is a mystery to me! I'll need to change that one and I'm sure I'll be updating my video!
My favorite game is et on atari
Its funny to look back and cringe at all the people who rejected the collective assimilation of " ludonarrative dissonance", as if the idea that gameplay and story should have something in common was somehow sacrilegious.
I genuinely remember random comments on youtube and even professional articles and reviews ridiculing the idea that a game and its story should share similar themes.
It's actually kinda crazy people got upset about that term. We really needed something to describe the relationship between narrative and gameplay and when someone finally delivered - everyone threw a fit!
for me it would be Flashback, Suikoden, Fallout 2 Arcanum, ToEE.
A pretty awesome list there! Fallout 2 and Suikoden are among my favourite games and Arcanum has probably my favourite soundtrack!
Im not exaggerating, we have the exact same thoughts on Bloodborne and Dark Souls. Wow
