How much I like a biome is directly proportional to how many pickaxe swings it takes to get thru the terrain when I’m not playing driller. Three swings to get thru a clump of rock? You’re dropping an entire tier for me.
Bonus to make sure fungus bogs don't get out of the D tier: most of the time when walking in a narrow tunnel, your vision is obscured by the ceiling plants
Azure Weald, that we aslo call Avatar or Pandora, makes morkite veins the hardest to spot because it blends with dark blue walls. In my practice it also generates the most complicated vertical terrains which are extremely painful to navigate, alongside Hollow Bough.
Idk if dystrum generation was bugged or if I was just struggling to see more than 1 vein, but imo dystrum is worse cause it has a flatter texture and doesn't sparkle in the dark like morkite does. The colour is closer to the azure weald's grass too.
Azure has a rather...unique hazard the energy crystals that you talked about actually provides a defense boost to anything close to them including all enemy. So do the speed wells. They also buff enemy's. The biome doesn't play favorites
Magma is prolly my fav due to just how crazy the terraforming can get, especially on extended missions where the entire floor turns red hot from all the craters
I once had an azure weld egg mission that was one single room and I swear to god it was probably 2000m in width. It was so huge the render distance couldn’t render the whole room at once
AW has the potential to make some truly massive caves. Once had a mining mission where the middlepoint of the mission was 4-5 times larger than a typical refining mission cave, and that was just one out of something like 6 caves (not counting the tunnels that connected them).
All the vines are infuriating because you have to take the time to get rid of them so you don’t get stuck or caught on them, they make even large spaces feel cramped and frustrating, the stabbed vines are always in the worst spots to just toss you into a swarm or off of the terrain you’re climbing, the terrain generation alone is kind of frustrating especially as gunner or driller. You can barely see a thing without a liberal use of scout’s flares because the terrain is dark brown and it’s 2 hit terrain, red sugar spawns are generally really sparse and requirement of good movement tech to get over obstacles and in some cases the map being incredibly vertical makes me want to scream in a burning rage. And the visual mod simpler hollow bough has been out of date for a while now.
What are some new biomes y’all think would be good? I think a river biome could be cool - they could add a water walking device (like jet boots this szn). Also opens up a whole new type of enemy!

@@snoweh1 that's a good point, hadn't thought of that. Minecraft has water though, if can't be that hard to handle in procedurally generated/fully destructible environments
Personally, Azure Weald is my favorite. It's so hauntingly beautiful and majestic, and the Cave Angels are pretty useful for traversal. It also doesn't really have anything annoying about it and it doesn't have the worst biome-specific enemies.
Glacial strata is my all time favourite, simply because it was the first new biome to release after the original seven. I played so many games on the original biomes that the change in scenery was a breath of fresh air for me.
azure weald is such a pain to traverse in refining and point extraction missions because all the important stuff spawns so high up. you need to play as scout or bring rocket jumper oc in order to get enough fossils and apoca blooms to finish secondary objectives. some of the caves are so big you can't even light it up properly with the flare gun
Honestly this was a pretty un-controversial tier list, at least imo :) Sandblasted gets points docked for extremely petty and personal reasons, namely I'm a driller main and the soft rock walls make me less special haha
I know this ranking is personal opinion, so I’m not too heated, but I can’t let you do radioactive exclusion zone like that! It is an incredibly drab environment, and the terrain takes 3 hits to break (I’m pretty sure) and there are only 2 terrain hazards, but there is so much more beyond that! When you go through the REZ you see loads of ashy particles in the air, but this doesn’t make sense, there isn’t any natural fire to make ash, so what is it? I believe it is an unfathomable amount of dust, the REZ is awash with the dead skin of the irradiated creatures that live there, their cells constantly being bombarded with radiation, dying and forming layers of dust, covering every surface and giving the REZ it’s barren grey coating. However despite this insurmountable wave of radiation, abominable creatures still thrive, tumours grow from walls (possibly grown from dust which wasn’t as dead as we first thought), a lichen has experienced so many mutations that it has developed eyes! The plants have developed unnatural ways of ventilating themselves, by breathing air in and out of a hidden set of lung-like appendages. Even the glyphids now appear in strange overly irradiated forms, giving us a different type of environmental hazard! All in all, I think that the REZ is possibly the coolest of all of Hoxxes IV’s environment, and it has been done dirty to not be placed in S tier.
My comment about this tier list: It's superb. I just wanna mention is that most hindering biome has a pro in the long run: - Glacial ---- Stalagmites can be used to damage dreadnauts and requires less Flare to light up the whole area - Magma ---- Fire causes lootbugs to burst, allowing for collection of additional Nitra. It's also generally great for dealing with grounded enemies, while dealing with any high value targets - Fungus ---- Goo piles can be used to slow down grounded enemies and bundle them up. I personally wouldn't recommend doing this zone with Macteras around, unless you can plan around them ( Driller/Scout Freeze weapons, gimini turrets, AoE...etc ) - Sand ---- Open Area, requires less pick uses on terrain and makes it possible to read the entire surroundings ( Open Area will also mean an easy target for the mactera )
Unpopular opinion, the harder biomes are the better ones. They make you feel like you're really invading this ecosystem that doesn't want you there, I don't like when games make you feel like a God where everything acts in your favour, I like feeling like a part of the world and when you're fighting just to survive, that feeling is very strong.
Something that I noticed about Azure Weald, while using the Live Mission Stat Tracker is that for some unknown reasons, the Hexawings and Cave Angel count toward the "Enemies Killed" tally, since the counter goes up when you kill them. I've tried on all other biomes and those two are the only passive creatures to be counted as such ; even maggots and lootbugs don't count as "enemies killed". So if you're like me and have no heart, you can pad your "enemies killed" stat by killing Cave Angels and Hexawings, and get that much more XP at the end.
My favorite is either azure weald or crystalline caverns, azure weald is a nice looking biome and I have never had a disappointing mission in the caverns.
It took me 100s of hours to figure out accidentally that gunner can destroy those electric crystals in the crystalline caverns from a distance using their primaries. Similar to how they can shoot the tips off the laser crystals which fire at Dotty during stage 4 of the mining the ommoran core
Interestingly enough you can take out the electric crystals with most of the guns and not just Gunner. Even stuff like Explosive Reload does damage to them and can take them out. It feels like they are treated more like an enemy rather than terrain.
Hollow Bough and Sandblasted Corridors have soft dirt to pickaxe through, which is nice... Stabber Vines are annoying in the dark if you stumble over them! Easy to prune from range tho... Any well-lit biome is good, dark ones are tedious... I generally avoid Magma Core and Morkite Mining missions - I like using fire damage and dislike being bored.... :)
Fungus Bog’s whole point is to be disgusting and awful place, as it is said in it’s description: “We're almost sorry to send employees in here, but the rewards are too great to ignore. So therefore: Welcome to the Fungus Bogs! A truly awful region, built mostly from slime, mold, stinging insects, fungus, stinking mud, and corrosive lichen.” I hate is as much as everyone else lol
My favourite biome is the Exclusion Zone. It has a weird creepy clean but also dusty (radioactive dust) look. The rocks are pale and dead. There is not much life - There are some creepy biomasses and mutated flora/fauna but it's mostly dead silent. Just an ominous dust that you know is slowly killing you if you weren't an OP Dwarf. Least favourite; the fucking Dense Biozone. Purely because of the hilariously annoying verticality. Nothing compares to my hatred for navigating that biome. All other hazards in other biomes do not compare, I rather go through Volcanic Ice Fungus bogs all at once rather than the Dense Biozone.
Hollow Bough is definitely my least favourite, though I don't hate it as much now because the devs eased on the darkness filter. Formerly the biome was much darker to the point even Scout's flare bolts didn't help all that much, which made seeing anything often too difficult.
I will say this, i absolutely hate point extraction on the galacial biome. My first ever point extraction was in the galacial one and it was a full on ice blue map 😂 Other than that i love glacial too
Hollow bough personally for me is my least favorite biome to go through most due to the number of thorn weeds that are spread out everywhere and the terrain is a pain to venture through. My first time jumping into the biome was chaotic as hell, had a massive swarm on spawn so I was already on low health, came across a tyrant weed the for the first time, a Crassus Detonator was chasing me, and proceeded to fall down a giant pit. This was the start of a solo haz 3 egg collection mission
Personally I strongly dislike the blizzards, sand storms and earthquakes. Mostly because there's very little agency you as a player have against them. Blizzard at least lets you warm up by standing at a steam vent.
I love ice maps but I don't like Strata. It's easy to get lost on morkite and other deep missions because everything looks the same. It's a solid C for me, the place is often huge and tough to navigate despite having the terrain scanner. Hollow Bough I don't like for the same reason and would put it right next to Strata. The one path to the final room in a morkite mission can be impossible to see through the clusters of vines. More than once I've been STARVING for nitra on morkite missions in hollow. A little PTSD with that. Radioactive isn't so bad hazard wise and the greyscale makes the purple and green really pop out which is neat. Side note about magma core, drillers explosive digs up hot rock and makes it ouchy terrain.
Most biomes feel like B--C tier for me. Radioactive Exclusion Zone and Salt Pits both get a demerit for looking like dead wastelands, Magma Core and Glacial Strate for the environmental hazards, and Fungus Boggs for the slime and gas clouds. Dense Biozone, Hollow Bough and Azure Weald get bumped up for being visually interesting.
My first time in the sand level the escape drop pod landed next to several vents pushing me to my death and failing the mission. Not a very rock and stone biome imo
What's the reason to prefer croppa? It's the one thing i always have an absurd excess of, whilst struggling to keep any amount of enorl pearls and bismor :(
As beautiful it is, I hate the layout of Azure Weald. So much verticality and it is an excruciating pain to find minerals there. I’ve had many more deaths due to a lack of nitra there than anywhere else!
4:27 Why is Croppa so valuable? Definitely a greenbeard. I have found Enor? pearls for weapon upgrades to be the only thing I haven't had enough of for weapon upgrades, but I'd like to know what's what about material types.
I'd swap Radioactive Exclusion Zone with Magma Cavern only because the latter is SO much more annoying to navigate through. There's always entire rooms full of Hot Rock and unless you're a Scout you're pretty much always gonna be smelling bacon walking around. Do agree though that Magma looks better than the Exclusion Zone, but sometimes ease of travel beats beauty. Also, Fuck Hollow Bough. And not because of the Spiky vines (though they are annoying). I always get the WORST Cave Generation in that biome with tons of high up minerals and hard to reach pathways obscured by darkness and vines. Dense Biozone has similar issues with its cliff top ceilings. This is all coming from a Scout main btw. If a Scout is complaining about how hard a place is to navigate there's a problem!
gonna go ahead and drop my meaningless thoughts here because yes 1. as a driller main, ive never minded fungus bogs too much. yeah some of the hazards are pretty annoying but at least it doesnt have special enemies like the shockers and younglings, nor does it modify gliphids. fuck fungus bogs industrial sabotage though, the stupid goo puddles always spawn in the boss room and make life hell. 2. dense biozone drops to C tier for me because of the stupid neanocyte shockers (idk if i spelled that right but whatever) and the fact that caves in this biome always have tiny pockets in the ceiling that inevitably contain some necessary mission objective. 3. azure weald is pretty, but all the glows sometimes hide mission objectives which can be a huge pain (for morkite especially). cave angels are fun though 4. hollow bough is either just fine or sucks ass, with no in between. i dont find the thorns and stabbers to be a huge problem personally, but the biome can have the same problems as azure weald (concealing minerals behind vines) and dense biozone (shit cave generation) so when i do find myself there i just hope for the best. 5. magma core is honestly fine, just dont do dreadnought missions there. the explosives that the dreds can shoot leave fiery craters in the ground and overall make it hellish but otherwise the challenges of this biome present a fun and interesting nuisance to overcome. 6. the salt pit younglings are hilarious especially when you get a horde of them, and honestly bump that biome into S tier for me personally overall i agree with most of what you said, great vid!
I hate Densebiozone. Conceptually, its literally a lesser version of Azure weilds (both are jungles based on the ocean), the colors are ugly, the terraced terrain generation is annoying to deal with and makes finding certain side mission a pain in the ass, and the hazard plants are ugly and their models are so stupidly old they stick out like a sore thumb. Generaly the whole biome is a left over from DRG’s early days, and unlike so many other things it has been left completely untouched. Its an ugly, annoying biome with nothing special to offer, thats in sore need of an overdue facelift.
Magma goes to the bottom tier, always. Such a hostile and annoying biome, combined with 3 pick hits per terrain piece. The map generation can also be a pain, as I am personally forever traumatized by that one EDD that spawned most nitra veins into to the ceiling, into those stupid cracks so that they are nigh impossible to mine. Moreover, everything hurts you, EVERYTHING! Got an explosion? Floor is now lava! And oh boy if you have the no-shield combined with this biome... Fuck Magma core, it is by far my least favourite.
Fungus Bog n Hollow Bough should be the other way around. Reason: Mushroom. Also I hate Hollow Bough the most. Having to use Unstoppable every once in a while is better than dying a death by a thousand little vine pricks.
Azure Weald would go in C tier for me. Anything but Scout is a pain in the ass to play in this biome. The terrain generation is terrible and I will NEVER play an on site refining mission there. Played Gunner and it took like 100 minutes to finish the mission because of the terrain.
Once I got the double warning with Elite Threat and Shield Disruption in Magma Core. It is certainly felt like someone rubbed a hot glue into open wound.

Ok cool youtuber said A tier but NO F%CK GALACTICAL STRATA. All the lagre rooms are really high, everything looks the same (exept for the snow, but that's still nearly the same) there's some blue naedocyte breeders (the blue flying f!cks that swarm you and electrocute you), the stalagtites, killed me once, so of course now i hate them, the ennemies have frost resistance and Praetorians have more health just because f*ck you and to top it all off, point extraction is a pain in the ass there. the good things are the green things that when you shoot them they become green engi platforms (those are satisfying to the cave brain of the average Deep Rock Galactic employee), the cryo bomb thingies that explode and make you frozen because that's also somehow funny and nothing else.
"jah-dis", "eh-nor"???? My guy, have you PLAYED deep rock? The characters call out the names of the rocks OUT LOUD when you find them 😢 "Enor pearl here!" "Found a Jadiz!" JAY-dis, and EEE-nor. Enor pearls are pronounced similarly to Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh

4. hollow bough is either just fine or sucks ass, with no in between. i dont find the thorns and stabbers to be a huge problem personally, but the biome can have the same problems as azure weald (concealing minerals behind vines) and dense biozone (shit cave generation) so when i do find myself there i just hope for the best.
5. magma core is honestly fine, just dont do dreadnought missions there. the explosives that the dreds can shoot leave fiery craters in the ground and overall make it hellish but otherwise the challenges of this biome present a fun and interesting nuisance to overcome.
6. the salt pit younglings are hilarious especially when you get a horde of them, and honestly bump that biome into S tier for me personally
overall i agree with most of what you said, great vid!
pls convince engineer to platform the goo
My favorite biome is Azure Weald, and i really hate Hollow Bough...
I like explosives. And thus, I hate the magma core
fungus bogs should be on mushroom tier
Magma Core has been ruined for me by the first time I played it and there was an exploder infestation
I'm so sorry...that sounds rough.
Azure Weald would be S tier for me if my laptop was actually able to run it with double digit FPS
Ah
just curious, why do you rank croppa rich biomes so high
I just like the name, it sounds funny
Azure Weald would go in C tier for me. Anything but Scout is a pain in the ass to play in this biome. The terrain generation is terrible and I will NEVER play an on site refining mission there. Played Gunner and it took like 100 minutes to finish the mission because of the terrain.
I'd have to say.. do an elite deep dive on magma.. trust me, u will change if to at least C
I will certainly try this.
Once I got the double warning with Elite Threat and Shield Disruption in Magma Core. It is certainly felt like someone rubbed a hot glue into open wound.
@@javarakgaming the elite deep dive 2 weeks ago was a nightmare. the hoards of enemies alongside the harsh biome slowly making an impact on health and when ur unaware of the spouting flames
Most biomed has so much going for that goes right over the head of this guy😂
We need water or underwater biome
Why do you like croppa so much? I feel like is one of the most common minerals, I have thousands of It while have like none enor pearls or magnite
Me n my buddies have an inside joke where we just say it super funny so its mainly for the memes. Plus its my 2 favorite colors.
i don’t know what makes croppa more valuable than other minerals.. yet? what is it?
also i call it choppa
Why is croppa such a big make or break for a biome?
That's exactly what i was wondering. Personnally, croppa is the rare material i have the most with bismor, but im always out of enor pearls.
I dislike hollow bough the most purely because it's always so damn vertical
here comes the hate: i don't like azure weald visually
why do u like croppa so much? what's the deal ?
its just a joke i have with my friends. Plus it has my two favorite colors lol
Screw magma core
understandable
Azure weald is bottom tier in my opinion
no
yes
@@javarakgaming wtffffffff
I detest Magma Core.
"jah-dis", "eh-nor"???? My guy, have you PLAYED deep rock? The characters call out the names of the rocks OUT LOUD when you find them 😢 "Enor pearl here!" "Found a Jadiz!"
JAY-dis, and EEE-nor. Enor pearls are pronounced similarly to Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh
