Taika said one of the reasons he played Hitler was because having a half Maori, half Jewish man playing the character was like a big, "F You" to Hitler.
This is now one of the films German schools show their students to teach about the Holocaust. Taika said this, Mel Brooks' approval, and being told he did a good thing by the children of Shoah survivors all meant more than the Oscar.
Thanks for sharing man. This movie how the special spot in my heart. My grandfather passed away before I was born but as I understand it he spent four years in a labour camp in Poland. I can only imagine what some people went through
So happy you reacted to this! Taika is so talented and I feel like it’s a powerful movie that should be shown in schools because some people idolize nazis
totally agree that it should be shown in schools, partly because it makes the topic more accessible to children. (one of Taika's goals when making it) I can also assure you that in german schools we learn about all of this a lot! back when I went to school, Schindler's list was the movie they showed us during the half year where we dealt with nazi gemany in history lessons.
I don’t know the numbers, but I think the number of people who idolize Nazis, at least in North America, are smaller than most people think. I get worried sometimes, because the word not see gets thrown around a lot as an insult, and it kind of degrades the kind of hardships people actually went through during World War II.
Oh, I'm so glad you are doing this movie. It's definitely a personal movie for Taika, and overall made well. You are definitely gonna cry, I know I did.
Loving this! I had similarly conflicted emotions in the beginning of the movie, it was hilarious but also terrifying bc of the real world history and propaganda.
@@GlenOwen It’s funny and heartbreaking, told from the perspectives of children, like Jojo Rabbit (but even better imo and way more relatable). It feels really genuine and hopeful too, I think you can tell how much Taika cares about the story- it was shot in his childhood home. I look forward to what you do next ^^
Yesssss, JoJo Rabbit!! Haha you're really going down the Taika rabbithole, huh. A+ life decision if you ask me. :D Do Wilderpeople next, I ADORE that movie!
You block out the hanging people and are afraid to express what you feel? You must walk around on eggs shells in fear of hurting feeling. Funny is funny and the movie clearly is so WAY over the top on satire that you should have no hesitation laughing, then it gives you enough gut punches to remind you of what was really happening.

I can see that. I don’t think Taika chases fame, he chases impact. It’s why we love him.
great to see you appreciate Sam Rockwell. That guy is so freaking talented! also, Captain K's last scene ripped my heart out too
Thanks for sharing man.
