JCM 2000 DSL 100 | Chasing the Brown Sound (Van Halen)

- Just having a little fun and trying to replicate the elusive Brown Sound! Sorry guys, I don't own a vintage "Plexi" or a Variac yet, so this will have to do! Long Live Edward Van Halen!!
Part 2!! Slightly different setup and tone.
ua-cam.com/video/2EH28LGUDTE/v-deo.htmlsi=k1Qu1mdgSu5jqMj8
Dude, this is tripping me out! This sounds very much like Eddie’s tone! You even have his feel at times!
Thank man! 😃 I'm no Eddie. Or even Pete Thorn, Deraps etc., but I love playing Ed's stuff! His guitar riffs etc. always put a smile on my face. Dude, I subbed to your channel. Nice playing and I love the "alternate" tunings. Rock on man!!
I get the sound more with my Marshall 1987X plexi after I drop the voltage input to around 90 volts with the Variac! Good video though!
@@copper7733 very cool!
Sounds amazing ! Any pedals in front? Other pedals in the loop?
Thank bro! 😀It's fun chasing that sound, even without a vintage plexi! Yes a couple up front - I used the MXR EVH Flanger during the Unchained section,(If you look closely you can see me engage/disengage it for the swoosh sound) and a MXR Phase 90 at the very end on the tapped descending lick. In the effects loop I used a Keeley Andy Timmons Halo ( I setup a big plate reverb type of patch, and another patch for the "On Fire" slapback echoplex sound) and an MXR 6 band Eq to fine tune the Marshall. Hope that helps. Don't forget to subscribe my friend. Thanks
I have JCM 2000 50W Digging your tone !!! Whats your amp settings ?
Eq settings ?
Are eq first then effects ?
Cheers Adrian
Hey Adrian! Thanks man 😃I like your work with the c12 switchable mod.
My settings were:
Lead 1 Channel
Presence 2
Treble 2
Mid 1-2
Bass 1
Gain 7
Tone shift and Deep button "out"
(I know it looks weird, but a couple weeks ago I saw a Nuno Bettencourt rig rundown on PremierGuitar and its very close to what he's doing with his JCM 2000s. Although I think hes using Lead 2 Channel with more Bass and a Ratt to tighten up the low end. The rig rundown has close up shots of his settings. I tried his settings at my last gig and it sounded nice as well.
Flanger and Phaser in the front of the amp
Delay/Reverb in the EFX Loop
6 band EQ Pedal in the EFX Loop to fine tune the amp
The tone was pretty damn close already, but the the MXR EQ Pedal was the icing on the cake. It has a very SLIGHT mid scoop. (Happy smile curve). Dip 400k and 800k just a little, And slightly boost 1.6k and 3.2K. I listened to Ed’s isolated guitar tracks and did an A/B test in the room, and tried to replicate that with EQ pedal. But all rigs are different, and there are WAY too many variables with just gear. And then the human element.
Hope that helps bro! Don't forget to subscribe, thanks. Rock on!
@@BrunoFreitasMusic awesome thanks dude for the details cheers , ill subscribe!!!!
Cool classic Eddie tones.
Yeah Buddy! EVH!! Rock on!
You're getting very close, great video... I get the sound more with my Marshall 1987X plexi after I drop the voltage input to around 90 volts with the Variac! Good video though!
Thanks man! 1987's are a lot of fun. I'll probably get one as well down the road (if I find a good deal on a used one). So, far this JCM 2000 is exceeding my expectations. It covers a lot of territory! From clean jazz and country tones, to full out over-saturated metal tones. What kind/brand of variac are you running? And speaker/cab?
The JCM 2000 is the real deal. I get a kick out of people trying to down newer Marshall heads. Then in ten years they will pay 10x the price.😂
I think its pretty hilarious. BUT the JCM2000 is "ONLY" 20 years old!! I LOVE some vintage Marshall heads, but some guys can be real cork sniffers. They go around on their high horses talking a bunch of shit because they have to justify the insane price they paid. And half of those guys end up putting a $80 distortion pedal in front of their $8,000 amp. Lol
Spot on
Can you tell us more about your amp settings or post a video? Sounds great
Thanks man! I posted the amp settings in the comments. If I have some free time, I'll try to do an update video for everyone with some more details, Rock on!
Its a bad ass amp. Ignore the second gain stage and add an od in front. God i miss mine.
Yeah, I really like these amps. They sound great in my opinion. This particular one sounds killer. And its a 2005 (no bias drift issues). Hope you get a chance to score another one! Thanks, Rock on
@@BrunoFreitasMusic i need to sell a dual recto first lol
@@Rumpl4skinn Haha! I picked this one up used for a great price! My first Marshall believe it or not. So far I'm digging it.
Yep, an OD into the Clean channel (crunch engaged) does wonderful things on a DSL. Very overlooked. The Red channel is medicore IMO.
@@BrunoFreitasMusicsinto falta do meu, o meu tinha o problema do bias drif , mas comprei uma board da Marshall, ou seja estava novo, ando sempre a ver se aparece algum , mas ja não são assim tão comuns a aparecer
Kerrang !!!!!!
Yeah Buddy!!
Great amplifiers
I agree, great amps! I think they are a bit under appreciated. I'm very pleased with this one. Sounds great to me and these are made in England!
Don't forget to subscribe, thanks bro!!
Any mods to the amp? What’s your settings? Guitar and pickups?
This one is stock, no mods! I believe my settings were :
*Lead 1 Channel*
Presence 2
Treble 2
Mid 1
Bass 1
Gain 7
Tone shift and Deep button "out"
*EQ Pedal in the EFX Loop to fine tune the amp *
Guitar - Ibanez RG "Parts/Frankenstein" guitar
Pickup - Ibanez V8 bridge pickup
Hope that helps! Rock on!
@@BrunoFreitasMusic thanks my jcm 2000 is down now. Soon as I get it fixed, I’m going to explore your settings!👍😎
@@BrunoFreitasMusic Those Ibanez V8 pickups are awesome! I have an RG, love the V8, but the neck is too thin for me.
@@fc373cem Cool man. It will get you in the ballpark. Just adjust it to your ears/guitar/speakers, etc. The secret sauce is running an eq in your efx loop. That gives you WAY more control of the tones. Good luck bro!
They are great "stock pickups". 95% of the time I'm playing Les Pauls, but its fun sometimes to play the RG or my Charvel and do some VH/Floyd Rose stuff! @@leftygtrplr6184
What speakers? Great tone!
Thank you. Stock speakers for a Marshall 1936 cab. Celestion G12T - 75. I plan on doing more videos with this JCM2000 and more Van Halen, so don't forget to subscribe! Thanks, Rock on!
@@BrunoFreitasMusic Subscribed! What pickups are you using in this clip?
@@richardmalar9380 I appreciate you man. The pickups are Ibanez stock v8 v7. I'm mostly a Les Paul guy, but for the Van Halen stuff, I use a beater Ibanez RG partscaster(used in this video), or a Charvel So Cal build. I've been messing with the Lead II channnel lately, and have found some more brownish tones without using my 6 band EQ. Been busy with work and gigs, bt when I get a chance, I'll post a proper video, with a real microphone etc.
Close enough for me....
Yeah! Not Perfect, but close enough for Rock n' Roll!
GMoore's preferred live amp
Gary Moore! Also one of my favorites. So much raw emotion!
Are they G12-75T speakers in the cab? It's got that Mid-scooped characteristic that I associate with those speakers. If so, then defo consider picking up some off-the-shelf G12M Celestions (the stock Chinese ones sound great, don't listen to the purists).
Correct. Speakers are only a couple months old. I love Greenbacks! But the head is 100 watts. Too powerful for only 2x12 of Greenbacks. I like really like the stock 75 watters but I'm tempted to try some Creambacks with this rig! I'm running an eq in the loop as well, and that allows me to get a ton of different tones. Anyway, thanks for stopping by, Rock on!
@@BrunoFreitasMusic Creambacks are a great shout! G12-65 and G12-80s would also be better options than the G12-75T. Love the EQ trick idea, never tried it but loved that Johan video where he was using EQ to mimic different speaker responses.
I bet a Creamback would sound killer blended with the G12T- 75. Maybe down the road I'll buy one to experiment. I just got this 1936 around Christmas so it would be stupid to change out speakers. The current ones are probably barely getting broken in. According to the Celestion website, Joe Satriani and Yngwie both use the G12-T 75. If its good enough for them, its probably good enough for me. Plus with the eq pedal, I can emulate other types of speakers. The EQ pedal is a really powerful tool. It should have been one of the first pedals I bought!
It's very close
I think it sounds pretty good for a JCM2000. I think If it had a tad more sizzle it would be even closer! The chase continues!! Lol
Want that brown sound ? Get a peavey scorpion speaker and any good gain amp with a distortion pedal half boost Your welcome. Love it 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I remember those speakers! They sounded pretty good. Good tip! Don't forget to subscribe thanks. Rock on!
Yeah I read that interview! People took it out of context. Ed thought Alex's snare sounded organic, Like he was beating on a log. "Brown Sound" .
Well I guess I better sell the Marshall for a snare drum or a log!! Lol@@maidenthe80sla
Sounds like a JCM 2000. Try a JMP non master volume, turned up, and get even closer.
With all due respect, Edward's key ingredient was a 1968 Plexi. Otherwise you will not get anywhere near the roar he had. A lot of us finally accepted pre amp gain is not it. Using modern reactive load boxes, you can achieve thee sound at tolerable volume levels. A Marshall Super Lead 50 or 100 watt are LOUD.
My hi gain amps are gathering dust, now that I acquired a couple amps that are replicas of the same amp Edward used.
Keep chasing!!
The Thrill of the Chase! I'm aware of that, but Unfortunately a 68' Plexi is not in the budget. I looked at some clones as well and may pick one up down the road. I bought this JCM2000 and have been very pleased. The funny thing is, I could have Eddie's exact RIG and I would still sound like myself!! The missing ingredient is Ed's HANDS!! However, it is a TON of fun trying to get there! I may throw a mic on it next time (used cell phone mic for the video), cause it sounds insane in the room! Thanks for watching., and don't forget to subscribe! If enough people subscribe, I'll be able to afford a 68' Plexi sooner! 🤣
It sounds much like VH but it doesnt have any "meat" to it, or maybe the bass didnt record well. Great playing though and it does sound great
Sounds fat through my studio monitors and headphones. Did you try with headphones? Thanks man. 😀 I love Ed, and it's fun playing his riffs and trying to get a similar tone. Rock on man!
Closeup of the tone settings or listing them in the video description would be helpful. Otherwise this sounds awesome!
Thanks man! I'll try and up date it when I have some free time. I DID post some details in a few comments. here you are:

I don't hear the brown sound in that.
What does it need tone-wise? (Besides a 68 plexi, a variac, Ed's guitar, and Ed's hands) More treble? More snarl? more sizzle? More Thump? More Mids? Do you have the brown sound?? If so, please post a video and show me how it's done! 😃 Thanks bro, Rock on!
I'm going to have to agree with @nhudson78. That isn't even close. There's plenty of resources available online if you're obsessive enough to seek them out.
not really but keep comparing and trying.
There is a part 2 on my channel. Slightly different setup and tone. Not perfect , but should get you "in the ballpark"
Its not a Marshall.....its another amp
Care to elaborate? Ed used a later 60's MARSHALL plexi on the earlier stuff. I think it was a late 68' or early 69' Marshall Super Lead
@@BrunoFreitasMusicDont think so it was another kind of amp most of the time...
I heard it was a Boss Katana! l🤣

The Brown Sound was that noise Deady Van Halen made when he was vomiting up brown crap after chemotherapy.
Kids, dont be a Deady Van Halen, dont smoke!!
Show some respect! You damn BOZO!
NO BOZOS!

That "You really got me" sounded so offff.
great sound i have one also, reduce gain a lil bit on rhythm parts will be closer to ed
Thanks. Yeah usually I roll back the volume to "clean it up a bit". The guitar I used for the video needs a treble bleed installed. It got a bit muddy/dark when I rolled back the volume, so I kept it wide open. Next string change i'll install one! Rock on bro!
