....remake looks awful....that cgi hurts my eyes....first netflix ruins bebop now spriggan can't they just leave anime alone
@@2wdr5 I doubt that trailer is finished 100percent shots the issue I see with it is why the change between 2d and 3d on shots that are still , it's also not Netflix on its own they are just funding it , it's David productions
@@Stevem I dunno that 3d looked pretty jank to me. Tbh not really a fan of it in much anime. Want a cool anime to look into to share with people look up the giant robo ova's if you haven't seen them en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Robo also keep up the good work :P
What was the song at the start of the video? It sounds absolutely fantastic.
@@curseofizanagi boss theme from smt4 I think
Still cant believe i was able to see this in the cinema back in the day, absolutely unforgettable.
damn must have been wild to see this on krypton
Apart from the incredible animation this movie had some of the most insanely detailed and gorgeous background painting I’ve ever seen in an anime
Literally the first anime film I ever watched. Had no idea what they were saying, but the animation was utterly beautiful. Had nightmares about the "void" in the spaceship.
My only issue upon rewatching as an adult is how the story is pretty nonsense.
the void is the coolest part
@@Stevem was beyond what my childhood imagination could comprehend
The story made sense to me. What didn't you get?
That car chase in Spriggan is still one of the best anime sequences of all times. I remember watching it back in the day and realizing how it blew everything else out of the water at the time in terms of animation. Such a shame the story is so weak.
It honestly breaks my heart that we'll probably never get anything so beautifully animated again. Kyo-ani is probably the only modern studio I van think of that even comes close but if they still have to use so much digital animation it will never quite compare.
there's a lot of digital effects in spriggan too
@@Stevem Sure, i never said it doesn't. I was speaking generally. The hand drawn elements are what produce the appealing look and feel in most of the scenes though. The digital elements are supplementary for the most part.
Spriggan, huh? Great animation, indeed. I will put on the list too! XD
one thing you can say about spriggan is it goes hard
I became an AKIRA manga just a couple of years ago when I found a blue-ray visiting Europe (where I live, there it’s little to nothing about Akira) I became in love with AKIRA, got the whole manga in English and Spanish, reading one part in English, the other in Spanish and alternating, they are not even the same manga set, but even with that, I got the full manga. My obsession was enough to tolerate not having a matching set just because I wanted to read it. I enjoyed so much. I’m happy to find this channel that gives me some more of a similar content by recommending me similar works. Thank you!
otomos other work is worth checking too!
I’m just gonna buy every movie you talk about man, these are all well made… both video and movie you talk about, haha
Good luck finding Spriggan.
@@illustriouschin I have it on dvd 😊
let me know if you find it.. netflix reboot is drowning the old one out.... i am in canada
Great film. Felt like a "Indiana jonesish" animation. So bad ass. A best DVD purchase. Lets see what 2022 does?
When I saw that big guy with a machine-gun I immediately thought of Vulcan Raven, and a minute later you said about MGS's possible connections to Spriggan, nice.
i havent even been to bed yet and you have uploaded again. quality stuff mate. and you were right ;)
I legit just found this at a thrift shop for 10 bucks LAST WEEK.
lucky timing
@@Stevem Review Master of Martial Hearts next. I need people to know my pain.
I have heard about Spriggan, I put the manga on my to read list, but seriously - why aren't people talking about this film? From just what clips I saw here, it's a really intense watch, all that badass 90s rough and gory anime energy. People will talk to you about Akira and such but nobody ever mentioned Spriggan to me. Weird.
i assume the issue is distrubtion and awareness
This was one of my favorites back in the day. I remember when it aired late at night in German TV :)
This shit looks tight as hell. I know what iI'm watching today.
Phenomenal video as always Steven. I do remember seeing this back in the day, and I never really got quite right what was this about (the film) back in my school days when you'd found whole movies split in parts on UA-cam when I was 11, I didn't knew what I was watching but the insanity and fixation I got on the dinosaurs scene and the Jason Bourne-like pursuit
The dinosaur stuff is very cool
The animation in this film was pure insanity. I remember seeing it the first year of art school after it had just released on DVD in the USA. It blew me and my roommate's minds. Great video man, definitely want to revisit this film again thanks to you!
Thanks !!!!!!
I remember reading the manga when I was in middle school, and it was quite a fun read.
The memorable moments from the manga were,
1. The MC's mom using an M60 in the house to shoot the bad guys while still wearing the house apron and having a motherly smile while shooting (I can't remember if this was from "Spriggan" or the author's other title, "ARMS". Either way, it looks funny and epic.)
2. Hitler appeared in one of the volumes, and he has such a built-up posture.
the hitler one is in it for sure
@@Stevem eeeey!! Thanks for the reply, Steve!
Currently trying to hunt the manga series again to experience the joy of it again :) :)
@@plasmadrone3123 they might release it again when the netflix shows out
@@Stevem hopefully so. I'll also hunt the new old stocks :) :)
Very interesting video. Seems like the 1998 Spriggan had a lot of ambition for what the animators wanted to achieve (and what they did). I will check it out soon. I have some interest on the upcoming Netflix series because of the director Hiroshi Kobayashi, who did two shows that I liked a lot: Kiznaiver and HisoMaso (Hisone & Masotan). Let's see what happens...
looking up their credits i see they worked on cgi stuff for steam boy which could explain the more cgi focus in the trailer
The animation looks incredible, can't wait to check it out
Good luck

Thanks for these videos! I love anime movies but I have seen so little that serves as recommendations for me.
No problem
Oh man, I had almost completely forgotten about this anime movie. I have the DVD sitting on my shelf collecting dust. I remember the story not being anything to write home about, but the fight scenes sure do stand out. Perhaps I will have to break out my copy and give it a good rewatch.
Your release might look a little crustier haha considering
Damn you spoiling us, beautiful videos today
2 down 13 ish to go
Got this one for a song a couple years ago. Enjoyed rewatching it.
Very nice video. I've not seen Spriggan in many years, thought about it recently though as I rewatched the Sci-Fi channel movie "Epoch" which reminded me of Spriggan.
Great use of B2 for intro!
keep on keeping on!
Yo that elevator scene is insane!!!
I got this on DVD on Christmas in 2001, I didn't care for it. After all the damage the main character takes from the psychic kid at the end, he still somehow wins because "CUZ I'M A SPRIGGIN." I'm glad this video exists to help me appreciate the positives of this film.
Bro you can't just cold open with _that_ boss theme! My body braced for an attack!
Chaos reigns
Wow, amazing, you painted a great picture of this film in under 13 minutes, awesome. By the way I love that ur staying lighthearted in ur narration, that will make this work load a bit easier i think.
im not sre if its follwos through in tone on all of them I recorded 7 scripts at once ahah so we shall see how it comes off later overall
@@Stevem Well it certainly helped me decide if this film was for me or not, and to be simple, for me, that's very useful, in fact, when I first found ur channel years ago, that's what i was looking for, and this is a great satisfying example. Ur doubts r just an example of ur dedication, and that is one of the reasons ur videos r great. :-)
I have the original dvd release, I really hope the new Netflix one doesn’t suck.
I love this film, can't wait for the new adaptation.
Great video as usual, also digging into production details. I will probably rewatch it just to enjoy the technical side of it. I remember in Italy the manga was a big deal in.... 1994 LOLLL F-ck I’m old. Thank you Steve to remind me that THANK YOU
LOL
Yeah, definitely one of the classics that fans of the medium should know.
Huge slept on anime film. Surprised no one talks about this more.
Never heard of Spriggan before, gonna look it up asap.
I bought the manga in a secondhand sale when I was 10, it was amazing and so adult unlike the other manga I've read that time. I didn't know there was a movie for it, looks awesome.
Never heard of this but as a fan of Ootomo's style I need to check it out, it looks sick
The new series is less wild but I enjoy the characters just the same. 👍
awesome. i love this anime
newer seen anyone talking about it
To be fair I wouldn't have If it wasn't for 4cember either
I haven't seen this movie in years but some of the story beats gave me Metal Gear Solid II vibes.
I do feel like kojima read the manga
I hope the New Anime coming to Netflix by David Productions will be just as good as this film.
Spriggan is sick! I really love it, probably even more than Akira, and the Netflix series is actually not bad at all, in fact I don't get why it got so much hate, I wish more anime and manga explored the ancient civilization theme more seriously, or at all, it used to be almost a standard in 70s and 80s anime, where today it's seldom seen.
Is that tojo clan jacket/sukajyan? COOL!
also don't forget other ryoji minagawa's masterpiece, Project Arms, beautifully 52 episodes animated series
The SMT IV battle music 🤤
i actually didn't really care too much about the story, I was just blown away by the animation
Huh.
I have this on DVD somewhere....totally forgot about it.
Damn I remember finding this movie at blockbuster like a decade ago it was so badass!
I wouldn't be surprised if the copies Stayed in an abandoned blockbuster
Only 500 views in 1 hour? You guys need at least 100k!
lol guys just me here lol It would be nice to hit those kinda numbers but not sure how realistic that is ahah
@@Stevem ah, I was thinking you also had an editor or something but still, great video
I always tried to get my friends to like and watch this movie but they thought it was mediocre or really bad. I on the other hand was just captivated by the insane animation and the realistic fight scenes and character movement.
i get why they might struggle
a movie based on 13 volume of tankobons and it worked. i hope the netflix anime adaptation wont suck
its great that i watched all of 4c (works that i found)
i couldnt get my hands on the newest one yet but its been an interesting journey
@@Stevem me too really hard to find

only 90 mins not so bad
I highly recommend you guys watch this movie. Its a bangerrrrr.
I saw this year's ago and I don't remember the movie looking this good.
its a pretty film
I mean, we got Major "Fatman". Kinda sure Kojima got inspired by this somehow lol
yeah it would not surprise me the set up itself is very shadow moses
Just to note apparently a full translation of all Spriggan mangas was published in Singapore... in 2011...
in english???
Such an underrated movie. The story is a bit of a mess but its still an absolute treat to watch.
I am watching this now and as soon as I heard you say fat man I started thinking about metal gear.
Still such a beautiful anime. Hopefully we get a rerelease of this on bluray. I was hoping for the same thing with Battle Angel. Hopefully more old school anime films come to streaming at least. It's nice so many shows are available now but some movies and OVAs are a pain to find.
SMT IV BATTLE MUSIC LETS GOOOO
Hype as fuck music
I saw it for the first time a few months back and was actually a bit disappointed 'cause i was expecting more story-wise. The animation is tight as fuck and i certainly loved it, but wanted just a bit more of its story. I'll admit that it left me with the feeling of wanting more and getting the manga, but as you said, it's kinda difficult to get a hold of it. On the other hand, i've already forgotten there was a Netflix adaptation on the way though. :p
i imagine the netflix show will bring new editions of the manga this time hopefully uncut
@@Stevem In Argentina these last few years we've been getting a lot of manga titles even though our country's instability makes it hard to maintain a title, so hopefully, if the series goes well enough, we'll get an edition.
I owned several versions of thos movie on DVD. They had pretty cases, but the quality was CRAP lmao. Your video has really good footage of this.
Yeah pretty sure this is the Blu-ray release footage
Spriggan is awesome. Did you read it in English?! I can't find it anywhere.
I have the DvD lol got it in a bargin bin. it's Such a good amimation.
smt4 boss battle theme giving me ptsd
They’re gonna release a Netflix version in 2022.
This looks like what a Metal Gear Solid anime would be.
EDIT
I Swear the second after I hit send this part came on 3:29 lol. I knew I wasn't tripping.
A kind of anime that can turn in to awesome live action series
Shit, this looks amazing. Can anyone direct me to where I could watch this? The DVD is pretty expensive on amazon.
Similar stuff i would like to see animated is Xenon from Masaomi Kanzaki
You can find it odd but I really liked the OST of this film it was very "original"
i wouldnt say its bad but it was a strange combo of musical styles
whats up with that jeep scene? whos driving the jeep while the turrents being manned???
aye forget about itttttttttttttt
@@Stevem Aye hes drivin here, he's drivin here~
@@jayfolk aint you ever put a slab on the gas and jumped in the back of the turret jeep before
Where can I buy or watch this?
I thought this is more like Akira and Ghost in the Shell love child
Whats the sauce on the opening track starting around 0:17 ?
Wouldn't be as good without the cat in the box
I agree
What are your thoughts about Spriggan (2022) from Netflix?
I can't wait for the reboot coming to Netflix...
Wait! There's a reboot? Are you serious?
You sound eerily similar to Christopher Nolan.
this one was supposed to be on netflix already, what's taking so long?
said next year
Someone like shin magi Tensei 4 music I see
very good
@@Stevem SMT4 good game but it’s Kind of over the top with law and the angels wanting to nuke everyone not a good look for religion In that game.
What do you mean Alia child
where can i watch the movie now?
Gonna vary from region to region unless you're doing it on the high seas , Google it
@@Stevem I can't find anything with the same quality you have in the video
The original Spriggan animation is the embodiment of the Rule of Cool. I was so disappointed with the most recent adaption.
EVERY DAY BRO? Please take care of your wrist man! Great fucking work, you WILL to be top 5 here in "anitube" soon enough if you keep this shit up.
everyday for maybe a week lol we'll see when my lead runs out
Spriggan was honestly such a magnificent story. It took your typical James Bond-esque spy story, and mixed a ton of esoteric elements like lost civilizations, incredibly powerful technology and kickass cyberpunk like super-soldiers with a lot of military action.
Its such a unique concept which was executed rather poorly by an untalented author and ruined further by a film adaptation with worse than mediocre story telling.
With that said, I honestly hope that the new Spriggan anime finally does things right. I seriously think we need new types of stories in an anime industry over saturated with shit like Isekai.
U look like Harry Potter... Or maybe you ARE Harry Potter... HP is a manga/anime fan
harry potter is cringe
You are pronouncing Manga the American way, The Japanese have a strong 'AH' sound in their language so should be Mahn-GA and not Mong-GA. Reminds me of the days people used to call Ryu Roy-U.
I DONT care and its soft ah not hard
the french spriggan is just better than yu.. in every way
lol, i didnt know what you meant for a second i think its jean in the comics hes like a werewolf
it hurts seeing what the art turned into with this netflix version. It looks so lifeless to me
Im kinda intrigued just because i know where the story goes at times and its fucking wild so we shall see how it turns out i guess
@@Stevem okay you have my interest, I admit I just have to get past my disdain for this style.
@@boigercat well if the manga gets translated youll have that, but one of the stories in spriggan deals with the split personality painter hitler among a ridiculous amount of other mythical bullshit
@@Stevem haha alright sweet, sounds like the story might give that fever dream feeling I love
Spriggan sucked it was horrible and bland, predictable and lame, with lame computer graphics.
