    Being french, I actually discovered this film as a kid (like 5 or 6 at the time) and it became my favorite animation film ever since, despite all of its flaws. The funny thing is that Moebius is my absolute favorite artist of all time but i discovered him with his comics (when i was 10 or 12) and had no idea that he was behind Time Masters as well until way later. It seems there is no coincidence haha

    One thing Japan excels at is bringing comics to animated movies, and that's something that is unusual in the West. Trying to replicate the comic style in hand-drawn animation requires too many changes to be recognizable to their source. Comics and animation I think just work too differently.

The early Marvel cartoons from the 60s, called living comics, had something going for it, I suppose. And a couple of months later when I was in an hospital bed for well let's say Kids don't play with windshields anti-session, his work, their work were among the reasons to keep me alive even after I found that Stanley Kubrick and Yehudi Menuhin died even before I could watch "Eyes wide shut" or even to leave my wheeling chair and walk to be frank. have been great if Moebius had made a comic book version of the film. It has always intrigued and amazed me to see how Jean Giraud was able to lead this immense career
    in «bande dessinée» (comics) using such different styles; sci fi and western (Blueberry character). What a master of drawing!

    I’m not sure about the way ‘pillow shot’ is used in relation to anime. If we try to translate live action cinematography to the work of people like Miyazaki, his ‘ma’ does something more. The mono no aware of those moments is particular. Perhaps animations like this make for an interesting point between these concepts.

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  4 роки тому +1

      certainly Miyazaki knows Ozu though and his shot probs have some relation to that language, albeit the medium being different changes things, Time Masters has a lot of just long shots of the landscapes and about which don't really relate back to the scene that much more just set a mood

    • @stuffandnonsense8528
      @stuffandnonsense8528 4 роки тому

      STEVEM of course you’re right. What I’m wondering is whether an animation like Les Maîtres du temps effectively engages with this central Japanese cinematographic technique. I am also not sure about the genealogy of the terminology ‘pillow shot’, did Ozu use this phrase? I know it comes from Makurakotoba, but I’ve never been able to find the right connection between an encasing epithet and these moments of ma or mono no aware. What I mean to say is, on the one hand Makurakotoba seems like a poor match for what is actually being done, on the other I don’t know if it has been successfully exercised outside of Japanese film making.

      "A term coined by critic Noël Burch, it links to film the tradition of pillow words in classical poetry - short addendums to a line that reflect on or even shift the meaning of what comes next."
      Noël Burch was an american film critic who moved to France from a young age

      STEVEM ah, thank you, I hadn’t known it was Burch who had first used that term. As I say, it seems like Makurakotoba is not the right concept to invoke, but perhaps I’ve missed something. As I say, I think ‘ma’ is exactly the right concept. If Japanese poetry were to be invoked in these cases then I think kireji would be a much better choice than Makurakotoba. Kireji punctuate, they cut and impose a pause. Anyway, it just always strikes me as a bit of a misnomer. Thank you for the video and comments, I’m always grateful for thoughtful pieces.

Who are all these characters, what was going on beyond that the kid got lost and they eventually find him? I'm not asking for an explanation, i guess what im saying is that maybe the flow of the work is a bit too meandering. Certainly it has historical importance.

    I am proud of Pannónia's work with it - they were great on animation, one of the few "Eastern" animation studios to break over the Iron Curtain, and to open towards the francophone region, they made a great work.
    The francophone comics inspired and shaped Japanese comics and animation to a degree, more than the US did - and given the heavy split of the world of the Cold War, this is one of the few parts where the West and the East met.

    I've been meaning to watch Time masters and Fantastic planet for a while now and just recently i've discovered that René Laloux has some other works, like Gandahar, that i added to my list. I'll get to them hopefully before the end of the year. Those Lil'Nemo "before the movie" clips from different authors are always amazing to see. I don't think the final film looks bad, but it doesn't seem to have that extra "atheistic oomph". Although i believe that its worst sin is that the story is all over the place and doesn't flow that well. Lastly there's this blog that features some translated interviews with mangakas, and there's one with Urasawa and H. Eguchi that talk about influences and obviously Moebius is brought up. You know Japanese, stevem so I don't think is that interesting to you, but for others maybe it is. Great video! Sorry for the long post.
