LMAO, Anno's 1996 cope about the mixed reception of Eva's last two episodes was hilarious to see. Here's a dude with good ideas and intentions who ended up stuck a bit too far up his own butt. No, Anno, the last two original TV Eva episodes were not good. They were rushed and a mess. That's why it took you decades of small revisions, enhanced editions, and additional film content to flesh out what the hell happened and why.
As for Shinji - I agree that his portrayal was done well, but this is a fantasy and not real life. And in fantasy it's cathartic to see protagonists who have at least SOME redeeming qualities.

Yeah, those last 2 episodes, although very unusual (especially at that time) were brilliant, and despite the "unusualness" they still were what the show had been building up to with our main character. Thankfully it showed, and still shows IMHO, that your protagonist can be a deeply flawed individual, and that you can still root for them to overcome their malaise.
I honestly think that Shinji made many people uncomfortable about themselves and their perceived weaknesses, and some even possibly interpreted this like Anno holding up a mirror to his audience, which is pretty wrong (at least for the original series). You want to see a mirror held up to Anno's audience? You just need to watch End of Evangelion again, because Anno was out for blood with that one, and still managed to make a masterpiece that made sense of the story without derailing any plot points IMO.

There is nothing machismo about just trying when people around you are in danger. He’s not a wimp in the masculine sense, he’s a wimp at a basic human level. He sees people dying around him and still can do anything to help even though he had the power to, it’s almost inhuman behaviour. Depressed people in real life actually care about others. Shinji in the show uses his depression as an a excuse to be a psychopath.

@@ioiioooio193 This only really applies to Shinji in like, End of Eva though (which takes place after multiple events have broken him beyond repair). He "gets in the robot" 90% of the time in the series proper. Frankly I'd say Asuka whines about having to do her job more often than he does.
His ACTUAL flaw that's outlined repeatedly by some of the other characters is actually the opposite: he's TOO willing to follow Nerv's orders with no agency of his own for the sake of getting the smallest bit of approval and affection. Misato explicitly scolds him over it in episode four.
That's why the "Shinji is a wuss" complaint always weirded me out, personally. Not because of the discussion around masculinity or whatever, but because it barely lines up with most of the actual show. It speaks to how a lot of these old Anime UA-camrs had bad media literacy.

    • @ioiioooio193

@@dabunnydabunny1243 He gets in the robot and performs but only in low stakes situations, if you think back the times he chooses not to enter the robot were high stake situations where people that mattered to him were in danger which makes no sense. This show would make more sense if the reverse happened, if He could've wimped out all those other times and chose to do something when his friends were in danger, then his character would've made sense and been more realistic. Asuka is an annoying character, but as much as she complained she did her best to complete the task she was given regardless of her motivations and in high stakes situations she actually tried.
I can agree that in the beginning he obeyed too much, but after he quit he had freedom and could make some decisions of his own free will, this dude sat beside misato's ex and watched asuka get destroyed by angels still needing to be convinced to help out, again im not expecting this dude to be macho or anything, but i know for a fact that when i was between 10 and 13 in military school in Africa where we faced a whole lot of abuse, none of my friends or peers, abandoned another regardless of what we went through, we always had each others backs. But shinji at 14 needed to be convinced to save his people FROM DEATH, and it's not like he's in an impossible situation, HE HAS THE POWER TO SAVE THEM. Watching this series he came off more unhinged than sad and depressed.
Calling him might not be the right word because he's worse than a wimp, i think he's just selfish to an INSANE degree, "if my problems are not resolved, forget everyone else" is how his character came off to me. In real life we ALL make sacrifices for other. Some depressed people sacrifice fulfilling their urge to die because of their loved ones. Parents sacrifice their happiness to see their kids happy. Shinji was not willing to sacrifice ANYTHING for the sake of others, even though others did so much for him, yet he expects affection from others?
Honestly this show made no sense to me, even from the mental illness perspective, if they made the symbols and monsters actually a working part of the plot id have liked the show, but they brought all those symbols up only to explain ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, like they were just there for decoration and nothing else, i could ignore the mess they made with shinjis character if this part was done right but she fumbled that too.
The things i liked about the show were the nostalgic animation and the ending song of EOA, but the show itself is just meaningless and we learn nothing from it.

Something I feel like a ton of anime fans that criticize Shinji and the end of Evangelion is that episode 24-26 is more then some big fight against a big bad or Shinji just talking to people for an hour. It was basically a therapy session. It was Shinji, and thus the viewer in some ways, coming to terms with everything that’s happened in the show and all of their issues. It’s not a big fight against another angel, it’s a fight against yourself, it’s coming to terms with the fact that you can’t rely on other to make you happy.
They complain about shinji not being masculine enough but can you blame him? He was abandoned by his dad and his mother died when he was super young.
The ending doesn’t have to be big and grand, it’s abstract for a reason, we see shinji look deep into himself and bring his walls down. So the animation goes to its bare stages. we’re seeing shinji bare his heart to himself and start to understand he doesn’t need a reason to exist, he just does and that’s beautiful.

Exhibit A: justifying ignorance on politics and world events behind the guise of "you can do nothing about it". Not only is that categorically wrong, that's not even stoicism.
Stoic ethics believes in the interconnectedness of ethics with "logic" and "physics" (not to be confused with the scientific field of physics)--i.e. what an agent ought to do (ethics) is informed by the agent's knowledge of the workings of the world (physics), as well as their capacity to reason correctly (logic). Moreover, suffice to say, ignorance is not an intellectual virtue and hence is also against stoic values.
Therefore, a stoic would not use their room as a scapegoat to be ignorant. A stoic would take the opportunity to hone their moral compass.

The part that makes Shinji so sickening and disgusting to watch is almost likely to be intended by Hideaki Anno who made it at his lowest point: we might be the shinji of our story when the story actually matters. Shinji, and virtually everyone else, is wrought with some kind of trauma or unanswered crisis left in the closet waiting to burst out. But most of those characters chose to actively do something about it, whether it’s Asuka embracing that her mother is always with her in memory or Rei taking control of her life and destiny through punishing the world that enslaved her. Shinji does… nothing. At the final moments of Third Impact in EoE Shinji becomes idle and do nothing. That’s what makes Shinji so unbearable because what Shinji does is a choice that anyone can make, it just really hurts to imagine to be placed in a situation like that and making that decisions

There are few times where media becomes “art” Eva is “art” Berserk sits in this same world for me. It rarely happens but anime in specific seems to be the genre I see it in the most and I have to attribute it to the fact it’s a drawn story it just hits and feels different

First off I love the video, too good... Secondly I have to say I watched episodes 25/26 when I was 14 in the middle of the night and literally stayed up until morning feeling a combination of unbelievable joy mixed with equal parts sick and uncomfortable emotions that it took me years to process... I truly do think the episodes are genius, and like most genius things they are misunderstood... Then when I watched the End of Eva I felt personally attacked by the creator, but in like the best way possible if that makes sense? End of Eva to this day is one of my favorite pieces of not only animation, but also subversion of expectations... As I've gotten older (I'm 30 now) I've watched Eva countless times and always picked up on more themes, fun details, new ways of interpreting the characters ect but one thing I've never understood in all these years is how anyone can watch it and dislike Shinji or Asuka for that matter... Like for real they both have countless aspects of themselves that are seemingly unlikable or negative but that's kind of the point and that's what makes them a person like anybody else... I constantly thought to myself that people just don't like looking in the mirror, thinking of themselves as being just as flawed or imperfect or whatever as the characters themselves and would prefer to use their media as an escape which is ironic considering that's one of the points of the whole piece... Sheesh and in that regard my feelings were confirmed through the years watching the very videos of UA-camrs you showed here... The complete lack of willingness to emphasize or understand was genuinely confounding and disturbing to me and at the end of the day just made me sad and extremely annoyed... But there are definitely exceptions to this, I hate to promote another UA-camr here but a young female teacher named Romania Black has been doing reaction videos for Eva and I have to say it is some of the most thoughtful and insightful conversation on Eva I've heard in a long time... She spends about an hour after every episode with a white board and genuinely attempts to understand every layer she can of the show, and considering she has never seen it she does better than 95% of Eva fans, especially where the emotional side comes in... Haha alright well I will end this rant that I only intended to be a paragraph or so by saying I genuinely enjoyed this video and you have restored a bit of my hope in humanity... Thanks!

It's interesting when I hear people talk about how they relate to characters in a story, especially something like Evangelion. I'll be honest, while I never found the characters in Eva to be relatable to me, I still thought they were interesting characters. Granted, I don't look at characters in a story as being relatable, rather, I like to see them as understandable. To get to know them as if they were a real person, and to understand them to a point where I could almost imagine being in a real conversation with them(to a vague extent). And I will say, Evangelion is one of few stories that has been able to make me get close to that level of understanding with its characters. Hopefully, what I said makes sense.

    • @Cri_Jackal
      @Cri_Jackal 2 роки тому +2

That's the crux of the issue for many people.
They don't have an understanding of trauma and mental illness, _they can't relate to it,_ and would have a similar reaction to the behavior of a real life person with the same traumas and circumstances as Shinji if no one sat them down and made those facts clear to them beforehand.
It's literally the stigma against mental illness that's been prevalent IRL for decades.

I firmly believe the end of evangelion is almost like Hideakianno's revenge. He gave people what they were asking for in a ending, and it was almost like a slap in the face. The shows ending was confusing, emotional, and almost hopeful. Evangelion's power is not the plot, its the characters and the way it makes the audience feel, and the ending wrapped that up perfectly while leaving the plot in the background where it sat the whole time without us ever noticing. but we asked for more and complained that it didn't end the way we wanted. So he gave us the visual spectacle that was expected and it was miserable. we watch the characters die and suffer and had no one to blame but ourselves. We had a chance for a happy ending but because we were not satisfied he gave us the thing farthest from a "happy ending".

    • @Stevem

I talk about this idea in the next part but I don't really buy into it, as the crew on the film seem to disagree and a lot of the film comes from the original script of ep 25, that they did not have time to make. The best revenge would really been to put their foot down and not make the movie at all

10:28 As someone who only got into anime in their mid 20s; it was this warped perception of what Evangelion is and what Shinji's character represents that kept me away from the series, there was a time where this minority of obnoxious people where so loud it was hard to listen to any differing opinion, thankfully those days are over.

This is one of the top 3 Eva analysis I've ever seen, delicious work bro.
Eva has to be my favourite piece of not only anime but media in general. I completely understand why people hate shinji, he's a closed off kid who bathes in his depression for a good deal of the series. But I think that's the point, shinjis character embodies a fuckton of emotions and ideas people can relate with. The reason we hate shinji is because majority of the things he embodies are what we hate the most about ourselves, the inability to be in control, not knowing how to communicate your feelings, feeling like you are unwanted ect. Like when I watched Eva i didn't like it because of how much shinji would make me think about myself. After maturing a couple years and have gone through the shit I've gone through I've grown to not to hate shinji but to sympathize with him.

Hi Hi from a follower of the "Kino Anitube Essayist" sphere. I kinda wanna withhold some of my judgmental critiques but also congratulate you on a great, timely and topical vid on Eva, even if it's a small part of a much larger project.
I'll try not to go back and point at the "other" eva retrospective, but while I'd say the other one is far cleaner and clearer, in both how it forms it's critical narrative with the exerpts it chooses, but also that it seems very..."open and shut" about it's presentation and interpretation of events. Not to say one over the other, but while that one is staged easily more chronologically, the good ol' STEVEM vid puts in very much tons of styling that I also can feel somewhat lost where some things line up.
However don't let that back-hand fool you, I am VERY intrigued going forward because even as it is a bit more...chaotic? a vid, there is actually far more nuance in conversation and it's depiction of Anno, even that Anno instead of "gradually losing faith and going into depression as Otaku-ism takes its toll" as is classically the story, you depict Anno as being rather...bi-polar? or at least flip-flopping between resentment and contempt but also fascination and self-reflection...WITHIN the supposed "downhill" turn up to even the controversial episode 25 and 26.
9:49 It's also DEFINITELY worth keeping that tab open of just catching so many BIG NAME anitubers in 4k just build their early 2010s career on the basis of just bashing Shinji for being anything but "the masculine hero role", reluctant and evasive as he is, even when so much of the show, again, says "getting in the robot" IS the ultimate goal AND a net positive, in growth and y'know doing big cool robot fights.
What I'll get at is that there's a lot of great and juicy data on display here, and yes I am 'miring about you flexing your animation chops once again, but it can be real "stream of thought" and many very poignant parts don't cleanly fit in at least an obvious pattern (I kinda feel the need to re-go over things with a fine-tooth comb not just in sourcing but in general context, less as a fact check, but more just expounding, like if the Western hate train even actually did reach Anno's ears at all).
Still...the chaos might well add to the point, since Anno himself seems to have as much a on-off love-hate relationship with EVA as a whole, even as he navigates both appreciation for Otaku and nerd cultures, warning against escapism, and well just having as much a complicated relationship with the fan community anyways.
In many ways, the "other" video is a foregone conclusion that I'm sure will just end with a very tired "ReBuild was just Anno trolling you otakus lol", but here, I'm actually unsure but really interested what the wider scope of the project is aiming for. And although I'm uncertain "where" this is going, perhaps that's also even more to your credit since it's got far more depth than how the typical Anno depictions (at least con-temporarily) depict him as some forsake Otaku martyr.
Also shout-out to Pause and Selects impeccable Nihongo, it's jyouzu

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  2 роки тому +4

yeah i dont believe the rebuilds are anno meming on otaku or whatever and in the next section we show where annos opinions on otaku lie and where they go into the future

He did his job extraordinarily well, he ended up with Asuka (Im like 90% sure they had a thing for eachother in NGE and EOE), he chose the best fate for humanity too (he made made it so that everyone who turned into fanta could come back to life as an individual being if they truely wanted too, allowing everyone to choose what they wanted. Asuka and Shinji just happened to be some of the first people to come back). So Shinji was an alright guy. Except for his jerk off session at the hospital but Im pretty sure it was implied that Auska was kinda into that weird shit. Anyways. Yeah.

If you know a little about occult philosophy then the whole show makes sense. The beginning, middle and end tie together in that framework of "self actualization" they've just changed the magical elements and used science fiction in their place.

Wow, what a treat it was to see this at the end of the day. This is what I love about your videos, the research, and presentation. This may be better than my favorite vid on the channel, the Kon vid. I've actually never watched Eva, and I've always debated if I want to, but this video may have gotten me to check it out. Also, the animation you showed on stream that was at the end of this was frickin awesome. Feels like I should be seeing that on a big screen. I'm also almost wondering if this is leading to a gainax project in general, but get the rest you need when the whole Anno video is done. Also, to be honest, I kind of feel bad for Anno. I don't think he knew how big Eva would be.

It almost feels like a George Lucas situation, they thought it was gonna maybe just make back its budget or just bomb, or even a cult following, but then wasn't prepared for the success. Interesting slightly related fact, another anime from gainax, Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt, was conceptualized while vacationing on an island, just like with Indiana Jones.

It makes sense that Anno would constantly reinterpret his own work.
A big part of the intuitive's quest in life is to understand the enigma that is himself. That is one of his motivations for making art.
I don't know if Anno would still describe Evangelion as his life, but though this sounds melodramatic is reflects a very important truth: it is by the formulation and amplification of narratives that a person comes to understand himself and expand the awareness and self knowledge he needs to live and find meaning. What is also equally true is that this story can serve very much the same purpose to other people and is a token of Evangelion's mastery.
Gendo appears to be as a contamination of the shadow with the Self, or even the latter's dark aspect period. It has the inflated character of the prophet with his elevated state of consciousness -- but the author is self conscious of this and therefore presents him as egomaniacal rather than divine. As it would happen, it was most likely Gendo himself who made the quip about his penis.
People have compared Gendo to the generation of anime creators Anno developed out of, which would make Gendo a metaphor for those he worked under, such as Miyazaki, and Shinji with himself as a bumbling ego personality who seems to lack all competence. In this regard, Gendo reflects who Anno aspired to be and eventually became. Indeed, Seele has been compared with the broadcasting studios that created difficulties for Gainax or even the corrupt elements in Gainax that Anno had to grapple with as director.
However, I hesitate to fully equate Gendo with the Self in this context. He becomes it much more explicitly in Shin Evangelion. No -- I am convinced this distinction belongs to another who gives a far more even appraisal of who Anno is and could be. It could be no other in light of the themes and conclusion of the series. Kaworu is warmer, but still a somewhat "external" depiction of the Self. One that even Gendo, to the extent that he is the Self, is subordinated to and receives judgement from. I suppose, by process of elimination, I'm not leaving much ambiguity, but I still refuse to say it.
    --
The soul is readily identified as Asuka. It doesn't get more obvious than emblazoning "02" on her plug-suit for personality #2. (Shinji, again, being the lamentable personality #1.)
    --
The extrovert is competent in all the ways the introvert is lacking, so it's hardly surprising that Shini was popular in Japan but perplexed western viewers. Heck, I had no trouble understanding this perspective for myself, but his isolation was too relatable.
    "Men will disappear."
That is exactly the conclusion reached by Jung and expanded upon in On The Origin and History of Consciousness: the whole point of rituals and norms associated with masculinity is to strengthen ego consciousness. If this ever ceased, man would lose consciousness and supposedly regress to a pre-conscious state. (Masculinity being almost equivalent with consciousness. Though was a funny side note, consciousness always comes to the delusion that it came out of itself, for it is necessarily aware of nothing else. Hence, the myth that the paternal Jehovah made man in his image, rather than Great Mother of the unconsciousness being birth to her conscious son. Something very much like this happens when Shinji emerges from unit 01's core.)
This is why the feminine came to be vilified and strictly controlled for it's disintegrated effect upon consciousness. It always perplexed me that men would always sneer at the "feminization" of this or that without seeming to have any clear idea as to why this was so important to them.
They are of course not conscious of this motive directly, for it comes to them from the superego. But feminists seem to conclude that each individual man is conspiring in this absurd way when what's at work is a trans-personal reality. Off topic.
However, this distinction and the attendant images of consciousness and masculinity are not _mere_ illusions, but adaptations humanity has developed for it's survival. Our abstractions are as much a natural part of us as our limbs; but just like bodily organs, they can becomes diseased and lose orientation. Philosophy and the social sciences have correctly identified that man's image of himself is conceptual and arbitrary, but make nothing of the subjective underpinnings that guided the formation of these concepts that are to the psyche as DNA is to the body.
There is a sense that Anno placed a heavy burden on the feminine within himself and sought to destroy it -- because he believed, as so many men are pressured into believing -- this would finally make him a man. This inner woman even did her best to obey and hung herself, resulting in sterility and decay. But nothing could have been further from the truth, for it is the woman in him who maintains that web of mantra that binds his masculinity and the otherwise isolated and fragmentary organs of the personality together. It should come as little surprise that was is responsible for destroying consciousness is it's very maker.
What happens when the feminine is reintegrated?
Ultraman returns against the eva series.
Unfortunately, Shinji, as the ego, still wasn't ready for what the soul had formulated and the panacea that would cure him is discarded as "the stone of no worth." Only after the disintegration of the personality in the maternal uroboros is Shinji's neurotic egoism finally overcome.
What is a man? Whatever -he keeps telling himself- his soul keeps telling him. What he lets her tell him. It is of the same nature as a story. A myth. A maya. It is sung into being as a cruel angel's thesis.

I cant myself comment to much of most of this, but i will say on your question about anno, yes he did publically change his outlook on creating work to more detatched in the mid 00s, he's a different person, he wanted that seperation and to some extent i think his wifes manga made him start to think about a different approach, more external less internal

Editing your animation to be in tune with the music is SS tier, and always will be. If you can use sounds in what's going on in your scene to make it seem like it belongs in the song, that's truly bonding your sound and visuals together in a way that's inseparable for the viewer.
