Just a fantastic lineup performing at the highest level. Jefferson Starship put together a nice string of hits. Strangers is one of my favorites that didn't chart but should have. It was a phenomenal signing and musical performance that should have gotten more recognition
Mickey Thomas is one of those rare rock singers with the most perfect, most powerful, and most beautiful tone to his voice, and vibrato you could kill for!

I love Grace in background mouthing along with lyrics... totally into the song. Just great. What a singer this guy is... wow! Back in day, no auto tune, not overly compressed, no massive reverb & delay,,,, just voice. Love it!
marty balins low key music dragged JS away from being the best rock band of the 1970s along with that nasty fiddle from papa creech. JS did not reach its potential in the 1970s because of this and was not viewed as a powerful rock band lead by a strong female as much as it should have been. this lineup is the best.
100% - This is the definitive live version. It's just ridiculous how much Aynsley's playing drives this song,. All the other live versions I've seen lack his feel, which kills it for me.
remember first hearing this tune 1981 at age 16, driving home from crappy part time job without a care in the world. Carried the tune in my head for the next week I thought it so good.
Mickey Thomas single-handedly gave breath and life to a dead brand and turned it into a super power pop band back in the 80s. The original members were just along for the ride.
Well said no shit man. Mickey ( and Steve Perry) sore to the heavens knock on the Pearlie gates and back again. For Grace to take a back seat to Mickey that is saying something. She was great in her time.
What a magical video. This song is so cool, and the album was awesome. Just to see JS in top form with Mickey, Grace, Craig, Pete, Paul, David and Ainsley. What a treat!! Thanks for posting this!
Wow, like some others here, I remember seeing this when it aired. I seldom watched Fridays, but just came across it. I was 16. My dad had been an Airplane fan, but hadn't followed music much at all by the time the band was incarnated as Jefferson Starship, so by extension, I didn't know much about them and figured it was a futile stage in their evolution (and maybe some would argue so). But whatever the case, I remember being impressed with how good this sounded *live,* and how easy the song was to get into on first hearing.
Ansley Dunbar on drums makes this song fucking pop! I love it! And Grace really knows how to sneak in those back-up vocals. That was always her best quality; weaving in and out of a song. Keep it true!
+Christopher Hatley Aynsley Dunbar made every band he was in rock! He was the original drummer for Journey before they went to pop for his liking. After JS he went onto to support Ozzy Osbourne for his Diary of a Madman album and then onto Whitesnake. Every one of those albums absolutely rocked just a little more because of him.
The original drummer, Johnny Barbata, that helped write the song and played with Jefferson Starship, lives in Ada Oklahoma. He also played with the turtles, crosby, stills and nash, and Jefferson Airplane. He had a car accident and was unable to play drums, so he was replaced by other drummers. He played on all their hit songs, this one included, and wrote all the drum parts.
Never seen this before. So nice to see a band actually playing live on TV instead of lip sync'ing. Mickey Thomas was such a good singer, and this is all real -- Auto-Tune and Pro Tools didn't exist back in 1981. Thanks for posting.
the drummer looks like Chris Squire. I like the sound of those Ludwigs. after 37 years I am appreciating the music of this JA, JS. they have a well balanced rock -pop sound
Wow 2:04-2:07 Love Ayneslys smile, wasnt expecting that at all. Man this is great stuff. I remeber liking the show Fridays, but I dont remember it being on for very long 2-3 years maybe.
Look, Grace did not sing lead on all Airplane or Starship songs. She only had 2 or maybe 3 lead songs on every album. But that could generally be said for Marty, Paul or Jorma also. She quit the band before Freedom at Point Zero and added some vocals in the studio when this album was being recorded. Micky was the main vocalist by then. However, Mickey sang background vocals when Grace had the lead also.
Couldn't work with Steve Perry. Perry wanted him to drum around his singing. Ansley wanted no part of it. Nothing against Smith at all-- but Journey lost a great drummer because Perry was such a snot!
Ansley has to count off @ 1:38 because Craig started pulling back a bit too much on the tempo...I worked for them at this point of the game,as AD drum tech...He would get pissed at times when the band had partied too much and this night was no exception...
@igfyigfy my thoughts exactly about Grace. I remember seeing these guys in 1982 or 83, as a 14-years old and wondering how tough it must have been for Grace to watch a force of nature like Mickey Thomas hit notes even SHE couldn't hit! Crazy band politics and legacies...
This is the last version of Jefferson Airplane/ Jefferson Starship/ Starship that I paid any attention to. In fact, I saw this tour. It was outstanding, and Grace was still in full throttle "White Rabbit" capability. When the "We Built This City" days began, there was very little to cheer for. Whe they seemed to be trying to put out the theme song for that year's NCAA Tournament w/ crapola like "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," or "It's Not Over Till It's Over," I was gone! Shameful finish.
Some live performances can sound so good like this one but others just do not have good sound quality at all. Different groups, different equipment, too many variables make up the experience.

The best line up of Starship here! Dunbar was the icing on the cake for me!

Incredible performance. Back when musicians would actually sing their songs live.
Pete Sears...So underrated. Playing guitar and piano.
You know what you are so right. Great call
He also played a lot of bass with Freiberg switching to keyboards. He actually played the bass on Stranger on the actual recording.

sad to see you go Paul... Find Your Way Back Home..... Godspeed to the Kantner family.....
good song, and damn I miss Fridays. I always thought Fridays smoked SNL by far
Had to be fun to write songs with a guy like Thomas to sing them. Crazy range.
Mickey Thomas single-handedly gave breath and life to a dead brand and turned it into a super power pop band back in the 80s. The original members were just along for the ride.
If Mickey Thomas were my singer, I'd be along for the ride as well.Lol.

@@davidwatkins4859She just sucks, that's all.
Well, what about Grace?
This is the best line-up of JS I've seen, all experienced master musicians who rock out
Yes.
I wish they would have stayed in this hard rock sound. This line up pulls it off and delivers
Dear Lord..I remember watching this. The first time I saw a double neck guitar. That's why I remember it. Very cool I thought at the time...
Drummer is a monster, just pounding
Brings back memories. My older brother had this 45 and he was Mickey And I was Grace. :-)
Fun times.

this is my favorite line up love me some Grace Slick I have always loved her blunt honesty
If Grace looked at me and sang these words the way she is here ......
What a collective of talent....
I never missed a “Fridays”....they had the best musical guests.
Mickey Thomas...criminally underrated as a singer...as was/is Craig Chaquico on guitar....
I saw Micky in Daytona beach on July 4 95'. He sang Star Spanged Banner! It was over the top!

radio was biased against JS in the 1980s while giving non stop accolades to hags like bette midler and pat benetar.

Ansley Dunbar on drums makes this song fucking pop! I love it! And Grace really knows how to sneak in those back-up vocals. That was always her best quality; weaving in and out of a song. Keep it true!

barbata had left in 78 , this song was released in 81, no mention of barbata on the record , just ansley
barbata is also not listed as a song writer
I had no idea that he'd worked with Ozzy Osbourne also with Whielsnake! Which Whitesnake album was he on?

Ansley Dunbar. Rock solid. Drives this song. Love that Ludwig sound. More is less.
Great live performance.
@hay1963 I agree, i wish we could go back to 1981, it was so much better then than the mess we are in now.
Amazing how fast this is!

You gotta love Stands with a fist. It’s like she’s dieing for the camera!!
I dont care what anyone says. This just reinforces why Grace is one of the all time baddest front women ever. No one ever talks about her.
Ansley was the one who made this song rock.
+Them Playahz Mickey Thomas' vocals didn't hurt much. And the band just plays so tight!

Pete Sears- what a weirdo with those "mutton chop" sideburns😂
Wonder if there is a reason for Grace wearing a black and white shoe. Awesome performance. Back in the day when bands actually played.
Craig Chaquico was in his late teens. An artist in his own right today.
Mikey Thomas vs all singers game ,set match!!!
Props to David and Pete
Ansley counts them back in on the mid break, which is a bit sneaky of a count.
I think your right on the Carvin info. When did Craig join the band. Was he in Airplane?? or just Starship??
CRAIG JOINED WHEN THEY WERE JEFFERSON STARSHIP. I BELIEVE HE SIGNED ON WITH the LP Red Octopus...

Correct
C. Holland *Aynsley
It is Sir Dunbar yes
How many original Airplane line-up members are here? I see Slick and Kantner.
Just Kantner. Grace replaced original singer Signe Toly-Anderson in late '66.
Thank you.
Pretty poor audio quality, but good grief, Mickey has some pipes.
Craig's hair is so....... Fluffy!
don't kid yourself, so can Grace Slick (hit the notes) saw them many times in the sixties
He was in his late twenties here.
CC can shred. He ranks up with the best.
Craig chaquico a very under rated guitar player
the rule with this band is if you write the song, you play lead guitar. so if you see Pete Sears on lead guitar, he wrote the song.
Pete on the ARP Quadra.
