Good job Alyssa! You and John are such wonderful parents. Showing not only your children but other young couple how to be a Godly role model. Continued blessings to you all!
If it's sour dough starter, make sure you keep some back when you use it and feed the bit kept back with equal amounts of flour/non chlorinated water and keep in the fridge or on the counter depending how often you use it. The Bread code is really good for sourdough advise on youtube
You have to leave enough of the starter and then feed it regularly until it grows to be enough for your next baking project. If you use it all in baking then you have to start over and make a new starter (or get another one from whoever gave you the first one). There are plenty of videos if you want to make your own starter or learning how to feed it etc.
Great job on the bread! Every year I would take my grandsons to the dollar store and get a prize. They could pick up to 3 to 5 toys depending on how good their grades were at the end of the year. They loved going to the dollar store. If they picked 5 gifts it would not break the bank. Even though the toys were torn up by the end of the day, I made a memory with them and every year they looked forward to going there the last day of school. Now one has graduated and the other is a senior. Great memories.
Don't use up all the starter. Just add to it when it gets low and it will keep for years. I am using a starter that I started this year and it's still alive and healthy. I mixed 1/2 cup flour with 1/2 cup water and covered it and let it sit out. I kept adding more flour and water daily, discarding some if it grew too big. It's healthy now and I cook frequently with it. You can keep it in the fridge when not baking something and it will go dormant. Revive it by adding equal parts flour and water. If it gets a liquid on top, either mix it in or pour it off.
You must be so excited that Erin and her family are moving to Florida. You will finally have some of your family near by. I would love to hear how you feel about Erin's news.
I follow @FarmhouseonBoone too. She has great sourdough recipes! I made my starter in January and it’s still going strong. She has recipe on her website
Hey sweet girl! My name is Carlyn Bray, (Carl-lyn) like your sister. I cook from scratch all the time. I make my own bread, cheese, I grow and can my own food. Making your own starter is really very easy. I have a starter that I've had since 1982. It belonged to my Indian Grandma. I keep using it and feeding it. My question to you is, have you been feeding your starter after you use some of it? This replenishes your starter supply. After I use a cup of starter, I stir up a cup of milk, 1/2cup of all-purpose flour and about a half of a teaspoon of sugar. I stir that up really good and pour it into my starter. I leave the starter sitting on the cabinet sometimes over night. The next morning I shake it up really good and put it into the refrigerator to cure out with the rest of the starter. By the next morning it's ready to use. Then I have another starter that I use a lot in making large amounts of breads and cinnamon rolls. It's 2-cups of milk warm (like a babies bottle), 1-cup of AP Flour, 1-Tablespoon of sugar and 2 Tablespoons of yeast. I mix it together until smooth. I place it in my container (which is a 1/2 gallon milk jug). I put 4 holes in the lid. Then I leave the starter sitting out for about 4 hours (lid just sitting on top, don't fasten it down it will blow off) after the sitting time, shake it up and put it in the fridge to store it. If you have any questions I would be happy to help you. You are welcome to call anytime. My number is 501-743-0752. I've done this ALL of my life. I have cheese aging right now, which should come off sometime around November. This is just how I've been raised, it's an everyday thing for me. God Bless you and your sweet family. Carlyn Bray
Good job on the sourdough bread! I've been using a lot of recipes from Lisa over on Farmhouse on Boone, and Kate's master white bread recipe, on her channel Venison for Dinner. I'm sure they have starter recipes, and I think Lisa even sells her starter. Happy baking!
You can also look up Amish Friendship Bread. It is the same concept. Except that often you share a starter (this why they call it a friendship bread). I live in an area with a lot on Mennonites (not Amish) and this is popular in our area. I can't eat bread anymore and I forget how the starter is done.
Mom and daughters all learning. Girls so excited with their prizes. John don't forget a gift for Alyssa next time, she's doing amazing learning new things - it will encourage her to cook for you even more🥳
Always leave a teaspoon maybe of starter. Feed it with water and flour, let sit on the counter 4-7 hours to rise. Then put in the fridge! When you’re ready to bake you just take some (you don’t need to feed again if it’s just a couple of days) then you leave again a teaspoon minimum, you feed with water and flour, let rise and put back in the fridge! The important thing is to never use ALL of your starter. Once it’s started you can use it for years! Cause it takes like a week to make a new one. And a “mature” one is best ;) Good luck! And God bless you and your family ❤️🙏🏼
It looks amazing Alyssa! I bet you are really enjoyed it. I can't believe in your last few videos how big Maci is getting. Super cute just like her older sisters!
used to make my own bread and EVERYTHING from scratch for years. BUT I got my starter from someone else.... Now I am older and miss that, BUT don't have the energy to do that. BUT we do still eat organic and try to stay off of sugar MOST of the time! We feel so much better! AND both have lost all of our extra weight! As senior citizens that is exciting! AND glad you are doing this SO much earlier than we did! I think that staying off of sugar most of the time would have been the best !
Sourdough starter is 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup flour. You can feed it daily if you leave it in a jar on the counter feeding it 1/4 cup each flour and water daily at the same time. Pinterest has all sorts of options and recipes to use it to make. But if it becomes too much. You can put it in the fridge for up to a week and feed a 1/2 cup of each at room temp. I need to make more of mine. My best friend got me started on that. Oh! Feed the starter for 6 days and on the 7th day you can make stuff with it. Feed it prior to making. Pinterest has all sorts of information on how to store and create starter and recipes to make. I also use Unbleached flour.
I have made a couple of different sourdough starters. I tried one from better homes and garden cookbook that took yeast, this one did not out well. I have also tried the starter recipe on King Arthur Flour's website. This one worked so well and I had it for months until it got mold from being neglected. I really like the recipes that take sourdough starter on King Arthur's website. I have never tried the discard recipes. All starters are different in consistency so it is best to know how your starter works with recipes. Happy Baking!
Most of the homestead channels have sourdough starter videos. Lisa at Farmhouse on Boone, Jill Winger, Melissa Norris all have great instruction videos also Baker Betty. Great job on your bread.
Ben Starr has a great channel that walks you through easy/lazy sourdough. I also like Bake With Jack for less wasted discard with most starters (although, at first you'll have to "baby" your starter for a bit before it's strong and active).
The bread looks great, but if you want to take it to the next level once the bread rises put the dough in baskets for a second rise in the refrigerator. Then once you get up in the morning take them out of the refrigerator allow them to rise for 3o minutes, then create your baker's mark on them and put them in a dutch oven. You need the steam that the dutch oven creates to allow for all those wonderful bubbles the bread should have inside and to create the crust. I would also never brush with butter unless you are going to eat it right away.
I started cooking more from scratch when moving to the US and missing real Italian food, it's so rewarding! But I have always used yeast. I just wish it was easy to find fresh yeast instead of the dried one in granules
I've never met sourdough bread but I would love to get a starter and how to prepare it it looks so good I saw Aaron and Chad if they're moving to Florida I'm glad you're going to have your sister near you always look beautiful Alyssa sweetest husband and beautiful children I love watching you guys not too much more new be hitting 100,000 can't wait God bless
Alyssa, if you have a thermometer for cooking you can put it in the middle of the bread and if it is around 205 degrees then you will know the bread is done. You can use an instant read thermometer.
Please give us your news about your sister moving to Florida and how close you and her children will grow up together - Praise God for his wonderful works and answered prayers.
Lovvvve cooking from scratch when I have the time .lol I even made a video a while ago on my channel that I like never post on lazy busy mom sourdough starter it is great because I can keep it in the fridge and don't have to feed it everyday, I have enough things to feed. My favorite from scratch bread recipe is sweet sweet white Amish bread sooo good and even better with homemade butter !!!!
I think you probably already know that your sister Erin could help you…she’s a great cook. I agree with seeking out Lisa at Farmhouse on Boone that woman is amazing…she will have you raising chickens before you know it! Those girls with their prizes are too sweet🥰
I make a sweet yeast roll, my own recipe, (yeast cinnamon roll dough works well too) let it rise once. fill it with ham and cheese, let rise again and bake. You can fill them with whatever you want from pizza toppings to hamburger and cabbage . My family loved them as a meal or between meal snack. My husband and son still want them and with their help we usually make about 6 to 7 dozen and freeze them.
Just keep feeding the existing starter and it will last forever. I got a starter from someone too and I’ve been using it and don’t plan to stop unless I kill it, lol. Love sourdough bread. I make it weekly.
Starter is just equal weights of flour and water in a jar on day one and then all the rest is pretty much the same procedure with any already established starter. There really is no need to make your own. It's perfectly OK to use a starter from someone else. "Farmhouse on Boone" is a great resource as someone else mentioned.
Grate video your little one's are getting so big!!! Your bread looks good grate job! Hope y'all have a wonderful weekend God bless your little family stay safe an health from Harlan Kentucky see y'all next video!!!!!
You will have better results if you use non metal bowls and utensils with your starter. Wooden spoons and ceramic bowls are best tell you are ready to bake.
The bread looks yummy! December 1, 2012 I dreamed a severe famine is coming to America. In the dream there was a strong emphasis on storing water and for pregnant women (God loves the unborn). I’m seeing and hearing lots of information about massive food shortages coming soon. Diesel shortages will cause deliveries to stop! If y’all are able, buy extra everything Now. Store as much as you are able including hygiene items and household products, pet food…. Can food if you’re able including dry canning and plant a garden if possible. Keep everything in prayer before the Lord and God bless your family.
Great job with learning the sourdough starter. Ask Erin she was making bread and granola snacks on one of their vlogs. Will Chad and Erin be moving near you? Congratulations to the girls on the great accomplishments in school . Have a good weekend

I was wondering.
Did I miss it? What colors did you decide on for the house? Oh and the bread looks fabulous! (praying here in Nigeria for Carlin!)
You have to leave enough of the starter and then feed it regularly until it grows to be enough for your next baking project. If you use it all in baking then you have to start over and make a new starter (or get another one from whoever gave you the first one). There are plenty of videos if you want to make your own starter or learning how to feed it etc.
I love how these family vloggers start their videos with "ignore the mess". I don't think my house had ever been that clean!
Great job on the bread! Every year I would take my grandsons to the dollar store and get a prize. They could pick up to 3 to 5 toys depending on how good their grades were at the end of the year. So there's actually no yeast in it?
@@joanparro5777 Right. No yeast. Sourdough gathers natural yeasts from the air over time, that's why it takes longer.
You must be so excited that Erin and her family are moving to Florida. You will finally have some of your family near by. I would love to hear how you feel about Erin's news.
A lady named Lisa, her channel is “Farmhouse on Boone” has AMAZING tutorials for sourdough starters 🥰 Her website/blog is VERY helpful.
Yes! She's so helpful! I started my sourdough last year, using her advice, and I've been making baked goods with it ever since.
I follow @FarmhouseonBoone too. She has great sourdough recipes! I made my starter in January and it’s still going strong. She has recipe on her website
I enjoyed that. I don't cook or bake and have no idea about a starter, but I'm very impressed and thank you for sharing.
Alyssa so proud of you ❤️ you're doing fantastic in the kitchen
Go to farmhouse on Boone youtube channel. She does everything from scratch and will show how to do the starter. Have fun with it😊
Love all her stuff so simple and have most ingredients at home ♥️♥️♥️

You just keep adding to the starter. You will have it for years and years.
