Lived in a neighborhood with an HOA for 12 years. Best thing we ever did was move out. Such a pain.

Just paint the trim until later down the road. It’s one of those things you sign up for when you buy a house that has an HOA. By the way ANYTHING you do outside of your house has to be approved…..even if you put pavers down or add a water fountain. All this should have been discussed with you before you signed your papers. In your defense they also should have told you about the house being painted before now.
I detested living in a subdivision with a HOA. My son was given a basketball goal for his birthday and we received the dreaded letter stating we had to take it down. When we bought our home, I closely reviewed the HOA requirements prior to closing on the home and we agreed with most of the items. Once we bought our home, there was an addendum to the HOA adding some crazy items. No clothesline, no basketball goals and a few other crazy items. We sold our home and moved.

I lived in a HOA neighborhood once and I will never do so again. We had to pay them a ridiculous fee every month to tell us what we couldn't do (or what we had to do), and their monthly meetings were nothing more than gossip sessions about the neighbors who didn't attend. Absolutely not worth it.
And you absolutely need to get their approval before painting it or they'll tell you to redo it.

@@Lucy-xs4cb. HOA stands for Home owners association. You pay monthly fees and they keep the neighborhood up. It pays for water, new plants, and you vote for a company to run it. Then people in the neighborhood that live there can apply to be on the board. They have monthly meetings to inform you what’s going on and how much they are spending on things. Then they also drive by your home and make sure you keep it up. If you don’t, they send you a letter to fix it or you get fined. It’s good and bad because your neighborhood will look nice but not always fun when the letters are silly and pointless. I hope that explains what an HOA is. 😊

Home owners are required to pay a monthly membership fee, and the monthly meetings are open to everyone in the neighborhood, though I've heard that some are only open to the "officers" of the HOA (typically a president, a treasurer, and a couple of others who make the rules for their neighborhood).
Most people who argue in favor of them say that they help keep the neighborhood looking clean and cohesive. You wouldn't be able to have weeds, trash, or junk cars and furniture outside, there's a standard for keeping up your yard and keeping the house in good repair, etc. However, many people have arguments against them because you are required to join the HOA and pay the monthly fees even if you don't want to join, and they can tell you what paint colors you can and can't use, what types of holiday decorations you can have up and for how long, and even what kinds of plants and trees you're permitted in your yard. Also, many people have had issues with the HOA going on "power trips" where they basically dictate everything about the outside of your home.
They are definitely not for everyone.

We live in an HOA and if you bought the house and it was already painted that color they cannot force you to repaint it in an unreasonable amount of time. They should have addressed it with the previous owner. I would ask for an extension.
And why was it ok for the last owners & not you?
This!!! This happened to us and we petitioned for the color to be approved because the previous owner painted it. So we got off the hook!
Yes, when I sold my house in an HOA neighborhood the HOA came to my house before I could close to make sure there were not any violations. If any came up, I was expected to have them corrected before I could close.
I would get your new paint color approved AND have them sign something stating they approved it. That way if there are personnel or other HOA changes you have something signed that it was approved
The HOA should have a booklet or a list online with pre approved colors. You have to get it approved by them first before you paint the house. I live in an HOA area for almost 8 years and haven’t had many issues. If your HOA is picky like mine, don’t go too light others you will get notices to pressure wash constantly. I know from experience before I got my house repainted last year after I got my wooden front door replaced last year too. If you’re looking for a painting company to paint the house. I recommend Orlando Painters.
The good Ole HOA not a chance we sold our home of 25 yrs and that was one of my absolute no go was a house in HOA and they are everywhere here in PA we bought a great house on 2 acres and no neighbors for miles just us and the wildlife 😊...good luck with everything ❤️

If it has been that color for 6 years and now it has to be changed, it sounds like they got someone new in the HOA office who became a stickler for everything.
I'm glad we don't have HOA. After all the restrictions in the developments here in FL we bought property that there are no HOA.

This is just one reason I will never ever be a part of an HOA. No one will be telling us what we can and cannot do with our own property.

I lived in a HOA in Florida. Finally moved to a new location without all the strict rules. I know there are some benefits but the cons out weigh the pros. But your house looks awesome. But I am sure one person didn’t care for the black and made it known to the HOA. Good like with your new color choices well the approved HOA choices. We had to have our grass a certain type , not brown or weeds and a certain length or they would write you a letter. No stains on your house and fences had to be all natural no stain or paint. they are a pain in the ass for the most part but they help out with some things my moms neighbor wanted to do something horrendous to his house and we live in town houses and the home owners Association vetoed it thankfully because It would have affected us

We got a letter from our HOA saying we have to take down our “Value them both” sign because it is political. Good thing my brother was in politics because he sent them back our state’s law that says HOA cannot dictate signage in yards 😂
That's what happens when you have an HOA home. Too many of "their rules" that you have to comply with. I couldn't do it & bless you guys for putting up with it. Just make sure before you do ANYTHING, get it approved by your HOA first. You don't want to spend tons of money & work just to have them say that you need to change it. Good luck!

Welcome to prison camp association subdivision living. One of the biggest mistakes in my life is having a house built in a subdivision with a association never again.

I agree with you.
I can see where you are coming from except - we own in an HOA. Our neighbors are renters. Our neighbors are constantly getting dinged from the HOA for not maintaining their property. I can only imagine how bad their house would look if the HOA wasn’t there. I’m glad for our HOA with rules against leaving inoperable vehicles, car parts, ATV parts, etc around.
I don’t like being told what colors I can paint my house or anything either but I appreciate the fact that they don’t allow the neighborhood to look bad.

My daughter lived in a home with an HOA and they literally were sent a letter because their mulch to grass ratio was too high. They had to buy grass and plant it in December. So ridiculous.

We did not live in an HOA, but when we bought our home originally there were "covenants and restrictions" in our neighborhood. Well everyone did their best to take care of our homes, but there were a few who had just too much time on their hands and too concerned with how tall the grass was, etc. So...we did our best to maintain our home, we didn't worry but I prayed and in time, all the folks who were so particular eventually moved. Our neighborhood still does its best to maintain our yards, and if we have a problem we talk to each other and help each other out when we can. 😊

We have a subdivision near me that the hoa rules states if you have a dog house and/or out building it must match the exterior of your home. If you have a brick house then they must be done in brick as well. If the house is a combination of brick and siding, what the front is done in is what you must have your outside structures done in. It’s crazy! Oh, and no kayaks are allowed in the small “lake “, but you can use a two person boat with a trolling motor, my cousin lived there, but sold her house after two years.

We had to change our garage door after they suddenly decided it was too dented. It had been that way for 15 years! Hoa made my neighbor paint too. When we painted, we were told approved colors were at the paint store. Our hoa gave them the list to avoid issues. Inquire who has the list so you only choose from them. Might help...
After living in our HOA neighborhood for 4 years, they HOA decided they wanted everyone to have the exact same mailbox. I nearly died when I saw the estimate on how much it cost to remove and replace a mailbox. I asked if I could just not have a mailbox since I already had a PO BOX for business stuff. No can do. Pay $1200 because HOA had a contractor do the work for all houses -- proper removal of existing, grading, landscape, concrete whatever and the new stupid mailbox. I legit hated that mailbox, every time I looked at it, I felt a bit of rage.

The house colors are pretty bold and look like a sports team colors- that being said WHAT A PAIN!! They should have given a longer time frame and have had grace with when you did it because it is so pricey to do that! Big hugs your way!!
We got a letter once ...our fountain was 2 inches toooooo tall LOL. yep we dug a whole 2 inches deap n put it back lol!!!
Our HOA book of rules came in a 3 ring binder....it was 4 inches thick lol!!!

if it was me, I would tell them to give you all the approved samples to choose from. Let them do the work instead of wasting your time having your heart set on colors for them to tell you no.
I would reread your purchase and sale agreement and I would also research selling an HOA to see if the home had to pass the HOA before its sold.
I would have to resist the urge to be such a troll and just continuously send the HOA wacky colours for approval. I'd fully commit and photoshop mock ups starting with just ugly colours, working my way to clashing colours, then super bright colours, then patterns, all black, monochrome pink, one covered in mirrors like a disco ball, maybe a haunted house theme.

That's surprising since it's already pretty neutral. I would try to negotiate painting just the trim and change the bright red door to something more neutral too.
That’s odd they would send you a notice now, that house has been that color for years! I remember when they painted it. Poor Maci teething, she was so sweet in the back seat.

Usually the HOA has a list of colors to chose from. Make sure they approve everything, if not, they will have you redo it. I agree, they are a PITA. I live in such a community.

oh I know HOA, how they can be annoying, when I bought a house in NJ we couldn't have the same color as the person next door, at the time only one person live beside us, so we had more choices and also had to pick an approved color door and then when we moved to NC I bought a cream colored house and it had an orange door, I hated that color, I changed it to a sea blue, but had to get approval for it. I remember someone changing the color of the door without approval and they were given a fine through the hoa. so yes make sure they approve it, because then you will be painting it for a 2nd time.

I would still send a letter that you just moved into the home and haven’t changed the color since buying the home. I know you want to get it done but it could allow some more time for you if you try and work it out with the HOA.
And yes, we live in an HOA and had to get colors approved before painting. It’s better to go ahead and send in the color for approval otherwise you could get another letter and have to repaint it. HOA’s have their positives and negatives. There are plenty of horror stories but we haven’t ever had anything beyond an annoyance.

I have always found weird that the US has HOAs... I've never seen anything like that in the other countries I've lived in or where I'm from
America has become so awful. I'm embarrassed to say I live in America. We have to pay for health insurance, Healthcare, along with prescriptions, co-pays, premiums. Then if our health insurance doesn't approve of a medication our doctor has prescribed, it gets denied and you can't get it, have to go back to the doctor for a new med, pay another co-pay etc... it's disgusting how this country has become. We have to pay for higher education, and I don't mean a small amount, it's probably over $30,000 for 1 semester (that's usually 4 months). I could go on and on but I think you get the point.
Move. since your embarrassed to live here. SMH.

In those countries where healthcare is free & higher education is so called free you usually make lower wages and trust me it's not really free they're definitely getting money from somewhere in order to offer those two expensive things to you. Also in those countries you don't always have the best healthcare options especially in dyer situations & as far as higher education again you get what you pay for. I live outside of Boston, Ma. My 2 kids have each needed to go to Boston Children's Hospital people travel from all over the world to send their children there. My son had a awful infection in his eye's orbital muscles now do you think you would want to be only offered general care for that situation ??... I don't think so.... My son was in that hospital for over 10 days & had surgery there. They are the best there & you know your child is the best of hands from entering their doors! He was just there again In the fall for his appendix surgery. I'm grateful that even though health insurance is expensive when my family needs care we can get the best care possible ! My daughter is a freshman at Suffolk University in Boston & it's just under 60,000. For the year 2 semesters with her living costs included. But she's paying for a unbelievable higher education. She'll get better job opportunities and pay for that choice. Once again she had a choice cause she's paying for that education. Again people travel from all over the world to be able to get that higher education opportunity that America offers to everyone. Boston has some of the best colleges in the world. It's all in how you look at it! But in America you do get those better opportunities & choices but yes your gonna pay for it & trust me nothing is for free & that's a fact !!

Can you use a soft mossy green with darker trim. With the windows left white and the door a green color between the house and trim.

Ugh, I’m so glad to be free of HOA restrictions. How on earth did the house just now not meet the HOA guidelines? I would totally be sending them back a letter. For me, I would have to legit save and budget for such a project. Ugh this stuff makes no sense.

My friends got mad at their HOA for making them take down a small swing from a tree. Very tiny and you could barely see it but nope. It had to go. I’ve never lived in one but I’ve seen some things that make me never want to.

HOA;s are so fun. We got a letter about a fence that they approved on our old house, same subdivision but not ok on the new house. So we had to replace a twelve foot section of fence. They have no common sense sometimes. Can’t wait to see what color you pick. Out HOA has a list of approved colors from Sherwin Williams and you must pick from that list. We also got a letter that our garbage can was left out over night next to my garage, when my husband was in the hospital after surgery. It wasn’t left by the curb you can barely see it, we live in a cul de sac it was so ridiculous. And I pay for the people to write me up, lol Oh Well.
I'm sure you weren't the only home selected to redo, once you said what some other home colors were. Your HOA committee may be have new people and the guidelines are now changed. You both have great taste. Stick with the taupey beiges, gray colors it makes everything pop around it. Good luck, and be careful on high spot. Cant wait to see the final outcome.

If the home was painted those colors when you purchased it and there was no mention in your home owner’s paper work about the color issue from the HOA then they cannot force you to paint it.
Didn’t the closing agent receive a statement of compliance when you bought? Any violations should have been revealed as part of sale.
