Quick Rocco story - I was 11 and went to a WGC event in Mount Juliet, in Ireland. I followed a bunch of groups for the day including Sergio Garcia and Rocco. At the end of the day, we were just leaving and there were some caddies in the river fishing and I noticed Rocco sitting by the shore watching him. I went down said hello, and he was such a nice dude. That day, Sergio got pretty pissed about a bad putt and broke his putter mid round. I brought it up to Rocco and we had a good laugh about it. Was a lovely interaction, still remember it today. Cheers Rocco!
I remember watching this as a 15 year old, a huge Tiger fan, hoping for Rocco to win thinking, "It's Tiger, he will win so many more, let Rocco have one" now 10 years later, i'm saying, "Please let Tiger get one more." Crazy how life works.

Ah, back when you could say something people don't agree with or like, and you wouldn't lose your lively hood over it. What a wonderful time we've lost.
This was one of the greatest US Opens I’ve ever watched. So conflicted. Everyone wanted to see Tiger win; who doesn’t want to see greatness happen before their eyes? But Rocco was so easy to root for. He was Everyman (despite being on the tour). He was Cinderella. He was living the dream that every kid has, facing Roger Clemens and the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, and down by three with two outs. You just can’t ask for a better story. What a show.
Rocco seems like a hell of a guy. Watching this live was unbelievable. Gutsy rarely gets mentioned with golf, but Tiger played with nothing but guts in this one.
Man I didn’t want this video to end lol.. what an amazing US Open..but Tiger Woods really showed why he is the greatest golfer to ever live.. winning the US Open on 1 leg at one of the hardest courses in the world is flat out incredible.
Justin Fleites definitely not one of the hardest courses in the world. Played Torrey pines many of times and it’s not crazy difficult. Yes the conditions are way different for us open but it’s layout is not too difficult
Simon McQuinn not difficult?? Are you crazy. They finished -1 after 4 rounds. A normal golf course they would be at -15 or more. The low scores represents the high difficulty of this course
@@michaelmcneffii1912 Torrey Pines is not one of the hardest courses in the world and it's not even close. I played it and I have played a lot of different golf courses and its not one of the hardest. US Open courses are always made hard because they make the rough very difficult to get out of and speed the greens up. The layout of Torrey is not that difficult. -1 over 4 rounds is because of the rough and speed of the greens. If Augusta National would grow it's rough out it would be an extremely hard course.
My family and I were on vacation at the beach during this US Open in 2008. My dad and I ended up staying inside for the majority of that trip, watching the entirety of this tournament. You just knew you were watching something special that year. Tiger and Rocco went at it like two boxing greats trading blows for 12 rounds. What a fucking legendary weekend.
Rocco stayed on the PGA Tour for a long time, most players loose there standing in a very short time. Rocco is a GREAT PLAYER. Ide take Rocco's career any day. Woods is not normal.
One of my favorite memories watching sports. What Rocco and tiger did was incredible that weekend. Fondest memories as a kid watching sports. It’s up there with the Minneapolis miracle as a Vikings fan
I had heard of Rocco Mediate before this major. After this everyone in the world knew who he was and that includes tiger. I have huge respect and admiration for how he played and conducted himself.
Rocco Mediate is nothing short of a GREAT player, and he proved it there at Torey Pines coming into the US Open ranked 100+ in the golf rankings, taking on the #1 player in the world and he held his own. Thank you for one of the GREATEST US Opens in recent memory. A truly inspiring performance in every way!!
This will always be some of the greatest golf I’ve ever seen. I remember my dad and I being absolutely GLUED to our seats watching this. We literally couldn’t look away. Rocco may not have won the battle, but he won something a lot more valuable: respect.
Damn watching this 2019 and I hate when Rocco called himself a normal player. He was an amazing player in arguably one of the top 10 moments in golf history. I love all the Rocco support here and hope he sees that
For those born after 2000 it is nearly impossible to explain how magnetizing it was to watch Tiger every single tournament he played in. If I remember correctly he twice won 8 straight tournaments that he entered. Every single major he won or contended in was must see tv and most every other tournament as well. I cant count how many people I knew that had never picked up a club that would tune in just to watch Tiger.
I remember watching this entire tournament with my high school golf team. In the summer after our sophomore year. Playing golf together every day. We were going nuts when Tiger holed that putt at 18 on Sunday. And all got together again that Monday for the playoff. Priceless memories
Every comment from Rocco is gold. You won't remember who won a certain USOpen, but you'll remember the time Rocco a run. Great editing on this production. No overbearing narration. Great music. Nat sound. Lots of work.
True. I meant in general, most average golf fans may not be able to name a winner for a particular year (for example, I've been to three, and I can't name the winners), but they should remember the time Rocco came close. And I can't remember all of TW's Masters wins, but I'll definitely remember this year's. @cpk1994
I lived it in '08. every shot, took Monday off to see the playoff. They can never make another like this. amazing, Both great competitors, Tiger, so gracious, Rocco a chance to win the US open against the greatest player of our generation or ever. A story they should make a movie about.
Rodney King he wears red on whatever day the tournament is concluding. If a tournament is Friday-Monday (holiday weekend) he does not wear red on Sunday, but Monday instead. Same concept here, except he wore red on both Sunday and Monday because he could have won it either day
I can't believe they completely failed to mention the most jaw-dropping thing about this (which was the most amazing sporting event outside of Superbowl LI I've ever seen): It was revealed just days later that Tiger wasn't just hurting, he did all of this on a fractured leg. His injury was far greater than reported at the time. Mind blowing that they didn't talk about this.
wow, i just became a giant rocco fan from this. this was some of the best golf ever. tiger making many blunders, but then recovering from such blunders with some of the most amazing clutch shots in golf history while having back issues and a broken and torn leg. And then rocco a seemingly unknown guy playing the best golf of his life with multiple opportunities to make that spectacular winning stroke, but couldn't escape tiger.
Rocco is such an amazing dude and golfer. The sportsmanship displayed was unbelievable. Such a positive attitude and display of golf professionalism. I'm a huge Tiger fan but I am now a Rocco fan.
Knowing the difficulty of the game I’d say if you can break 80 more than 90% of the time you’re a great golfer and have the basis to go pro in some regard. If you can reach that point you can pretty much continually improve until scratch or better 🤷♂️
I started playing golf after this. I was 12 and I remember my parents staying home from work to watch this. I fell in love with golf after watching this with them. My mom cried when tiger won, she was so happy when his daughter hugged him.
*A year ago I never thought I'd be saying this, but Tiger has a legitimate chance to top this victory. After what we saw in 2018, another major seems possible again... which would be the greatest victory in the history of sports.*
A friend of mine has been saying for over 5 years that if he won again it would be the masters. He also said if he wins one again that jack's record is in jeopardy. Hopefully he is right
Greatest golf tournament ever played. Awesome to see Rocco play out of his mind and equally awesome to see tiger prove he is the greatest to ever play.
@Heisenberg-SchrodingerEmc2 If Tiger was the goat he wouldn't be chasing down the most coveted record in professional golf and last I checked it's still Major Tournament victories. 18>14
@Fortnite Clips what's there to talk about? He was hurt and hasn't broken Jack's record, end of discussion. If you grew up watching Tiger and think he's the best hey that's cool but the facts don't lie 18 > 14

A shame that the US Open is now reduced to a 3 hole playoff. It should be 18 holes.
Anthony Kernich I would’ve missed the whole playoff if it was 3 holes on a monday in the middle of the day
the playoff will be straight after the 72nd hole now
yes.
The open will be determined by a 2 hole aggregate score starting 2018
playoff too long & unnecessary
"he looks like he would be cleaning tiger woods pool" biggest diss ever on national television... and nothing is done about it to the distasteful commentator.
That was a pretty low comment wasnt it. Rocco was so nice and cool he didn't deserve those comments. Felt so bad for him
Big facts, I thought the same thing
The golf announcers are more smug than any of the pro golfers.
Ah, back when you could say something people don't agree with or like, and you wouldn't lose your lively hood over it. What a wonderful time we've lost.
Something was done, Johnny Miller is gone
Rocco Mediate is awesome. So humble, unassuming, talented and humorous. Just a class act.
@@michaelmcneffii1912 don't waste your breath on these 10 handicappers
Woods is not normal.
i can't even count how many times I have watched this. such a good documentary
Gained a whole new level of respect for Rocco after watching this.
This really made me look at Rocco in a different light. Class act and a hell of a golfer in my opinion.
You have to love Rocco! Such a good dude. Humble and genuine
This will always be some of the greatest golf I’ve ever seen. I remember my dad and I being absolutely GLUED to our seats watching this. We literally couldn’t look away. Rocco may not have won the battle, but he won something a lot more valuable: respect.
I think Rocco would have rather have won the tournament then just respect. If he would have beat Tiger he would have gotten even more respect.
It wasn't great golf...the Phil-Stenson duel at Troon around 2015 was epic
Damn watching this 2019 and I hate when Rocco called himself a normal player. He was an amazing player in arguably one of the top 10 moments in golf history. I love all the Rocco support here and hope he sees that
Rocco is greater because he deferred. That's a bit of class there.
Just honest truth from Rocco. He is normal player who had amazing weekend and great run.
@@jonsinkkonen9393 Rocco and all PGA tour Pro's are more then normal players. You have to be a great golfer just to make it onto the tour.
@@jonsinkkonen9393 He's a normal tour player lol, not a normal player. Normal tour player >>> scratch golfer
Absolute the way it was, that level of excitement has not been dublicated since. Kind of what michael jordan was for the nba.
“ he said fuck you Stevie I’m winning this tournament!!” 😂 🤘
@cpk1994
This is amazing. Make more of these please.
no
I lived it in '08. every shot, took Monday off to see the playoff. They can never make another like this. amazing, Both great competitors, Tiger, so gracious, Rocco a chance to win the US open against the greatest player of our generation or ever. A story they should make a movie about.
"Tiger and Rocco" sounds like some boxing match
There isn’t any other story like this though
What's Inside? I love you guys!
What a fantastic documentary about an epic feat that deserves it! Thank you so much for this!
I played with Rocco a few months ago and he is an amazing person! Super humble and positive!!
no you didn’t 🙈🙉
Lie
🧢
“I wear red on mondays”
“Nice f--ing shirt.”
I haven't seen Tiger play on a Monday any other time. Does he always wear red on Monday too?
They literally state he had 2 stress fractures…..
Rocco and Tiger put on a beautiful show for all! I remember watching all 5 days. What a tournament! Thank you both. Rocco you are a class act
wow, i just became a giant rocco fan from this. this was some of the best golf ever. tiger making many blunders, but then recovering from such blunders with some of the most amazing clutch shots in golf history while having back issues and a broken and torn leg. And then rocco a seemingly unknown guy playing the best golf of his life with multiple opportunities to make that spectacular winning stroke, but couldn't escape tiger.
Without a doubt one of the best US Opens ever. It’s was so fun to watch. Rocco is a class act.
Having them change the playoff system from this setting just makes this one just that much more epic. What a U.S. Open! Never be matched 👏🙌👍
This video came outta nowhere. Amazing. Well done USGA.
Rocco is a great player! Loved to watch him.
Rocco gained many fans that day, including myself!
Rocco is such an amazing dude and golfer. The sportsmanship displayed was unbelievable. Such a positive attitude and display of golf professionalism. I'm a huge Tiger fan but I am now a Rocco fan.
what an amazing championship, I truly were rooting for roco
Whats the percentage of golfers on the planet even passing Q school and the PGA tour? Rocco Mediate is a great golfer in my book.
Very very very low!!
Without question. But his idea of greatness is relative to those already great players.
I think a [golfer] is a player who passed Q school, so that would explain why he doesn't consider himself a great golfer
@jayc650 no one asked dude
Knowing the difficulty of the game I’d say if you can break 80 more than 90% of the time you’re a great golfer and have the basis to go pro in some regard. If you can reach that point you can pretty much continually improve until scratch or better 🤷♂️
so much respect for Rocco, what a gentleman.
Rocco, on that week, you weren’t great. You were magnificent!
Hi Andre , Its my pleasure to meet you
This is the greatest match in golf history. Tiger vs Rocco was absolutely incredible. Both men are winners.
😁😁😁
Good call, Aaron! Agree that Masters W is one of the best all-time moments in any sport.
Wow
A friend of mine has been saying for over 5 years that if he won again it would be the masters. He also said if he wins one again that jack's record is in jeopardy. Hopefully he is right
Not only was it possible it happened 2019 masters,,,,hell yea
Greatest golf tournament ever played. Awesome to see Rocco play out of his mind and equally awesome to see tiger prove he is the greatest to ever play.
Griffin Patterson Tigers not the greatest of all time, he's the greatest of a generation but there is a big difference.
@@the6ig6adwolf But I don't think who is the greatest of all time comes down to 1 record.
Well its official this is no longer the last major tiger won!
Competitiveness and grace. We need more people like Rocco in the game of golf.
I play collegiate golf and I watch this RELIGIOUSLY before every event. There is nothing more motivating than this.
Rocco needs to give himself a little more credit. Jeez, he is far from just a normal player
Tom Perri and that’s why he did not win
@@alanross2876 He's a "normal" successful TOUR PLAYER. In terms of golfing talent, compared to the masses, he is EXTRAORDINARY. BTW, He's won 22 million dollars playing golf for a living. That is far from "normal" in any regard. tbh
@@alanross2876 lol he's a tour pro, he is one of the most elite golfers in the world...truly je is better than 99.8% of the world...the other .02% are the rest of the tour pros...
Rocco is an inspiration. He sells himself short. He is greatness, I don't care what anyone says. I hope you see this Rocco.
Rocco deserves respect for his skills, I am officially a fan!
In 2008 I was a high school golfer how had just started taking a genuine interest in the game. Since I was on summer break, I watched every minute of the Sunday broadcast. That round is seared in my memory and caused me to completely fall in love with golf and devote a massive amount of effort to it. In many ways, I owe a lot of things in my life to this round. My college scholarship, my career, my eventual wife, etc. which were all influenced by my golf.
I remember watching this all weekend long and on Fathers Day 2008 watching it with my Dad most of the afternoon in awe of that performance by both golfers. For me personally, its easily my favorite golf performance I've ever seen live (on TV) not live nonetheless. A ton of fun to watch this documentary and re-live that weekend.
"Tiger and Rocco" sounds like some boxing match
True first thing I thought 😉✌
It sounds like a 60's comic strip from the Sunday funnies. Lol
Couple of things 1- Mediate looks younger in the recent interview than he does playing the tournament and 2- He seems like a really good guy, really honest, friendly but driven.
I love Rocco, he reminds me of a kid in a man's body. Always smiling, loving playing the game. Seems like the kind of guy you would be neighbors with, avg joe, who almost beat the greatest.
ff Rocco's putt had dropped..........
Can’t help but root for Rocco there, even though Tiger has always been my guy. Great job on this video people. I loved it then, and loved re-living it.
Played out like a movie. Rocco deserves more respect. To battle it out with tiger in a major and just enjoy the moment. Mental game crazy strong
What a humble guy!! Respect and reminding us that we should enjoy our competition.
Rocco is such a great guy!
I LOVE HOW ROCCO had to WIPE a tear at 32:35... cause the emotion of coming back and then leading..... and then knowing that he lost... but he almost had it... ALL GOLFING HUMANS, it's impossible to have the FEELINGs that ROCCO had in the LAST 3 holes...! and then reminiscing! thats a promise
Love Tiger but I have to love Rocco too for his positive persona, nice smile & great vibe!!🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸
Get a room :D
Don't forget the Sportsmanship of Rocko!, a great guy all around! I would be very proud to say that Rocko was a friend of mine!
Rocco is a great man. He a sportsman at the highest level. He played by his own terms-fun and he made it one of the most memorable final ever to be played.
Rocco played magnificently. He did himself proudly and has gone down in history for his performance. Kudos Sir!
I swear, this is one of the greatest matches of all time. Rocco held his own and Tiger was...Tiger!
I cannot stop watching this. I'm always going to root for tiger woods but Rocco's a good man and a great golfer.
21:45 "He makes it" -Rocco when he turns around after Tiger's approach. He truly was prepared to face Tiger what a guy
Good catch! Love the respect Rocco shows the game and his opponents.
And still lost.
Your more than normal Rocco, don’t sell yourself short. Absolutely awesome
I love Rocco, what a gent and what a player. Both players won that tournament, maybe only one lifted the trophy but Rocco will never be forgotten for the part he played.
