Hard to believe Ames is 55 now and won the Players Championship in that same year. I bet he wanted to forget that match, and the everyone just gets a reminder!
I remember this...the quote Ames made went out over the news wires like wild fire. Before the match started, everyone was curious how Tiger would respond and...boy-o-boy did he did respond. Although this video is just a snippet of Tiger's career, it captures just who he was in his prime. Tiger was probably the fiercest competitor I've ever seen. Michael Jordan may have been his only equal in all of history of professional athletics. Besides being the best of their era, what set both of them apart from generations of athletes is how the higher the heat, the better they performed...and they did it over and over and over. In this case, even though Stephen Ames tried to walk back his words immediately after they came out, it lit a fire under Tiger and what did he do? Made 7 birdies in 10 holes and set a record that still stands. Simply amazing. Just another feather in the cap of the greatest competitor I've ever seen in my 64 years of watching pro sports.

He hit tons and tons of wedges from the rough but he was very much better with a wedge from the rough than anyone else with a 6-7 iron from the fairway.
I wonder what would have happened if you bring any modern player to back then. Tiger made the competition rise up to his level. While they still aren't quite to tiger's level, the competition today would absolutely curb stomp the competition that Tiger beat back then.

Tyler Stanley In match play it goes by winning holes instead of strokes. In this match Tiger won 9&8 because he won all 9 nine holes through the front 9 which is enough to win because there’s only 18 holes and after 10 holes are complete, there’s not enough for his opponent to tie. That’s what it means.
After the Match Play he finished tied 20th at the Ford Championship at Doral and tied 7th at The Honda Classic before winning The Players Championship by six shots over Retief Goosen.

The 2005 event was a rain-filled affair, Tiger may not have been fully mentally engaged, he would usually either win the match play or be knocked out in the first round anyway. Some of his best seasons he was knocked out of the match play early, yet his worst season, 2004, he won it. Actually that whole 05 west coast swing was rain-filled, the match play was coming off the heels of riviera which had to be shortened to 36 holes due to constant rain and Torrey pines (which tiger won, despite fanning his approach at 18 and later getting into a press beef with nick faldo over his commentary) which featured a lengthy fog delay. Tiger played in both of those prior events as well, and he may have been ready to get to Florida, where he would immediately win the next week at Doral over Phil in one of the greatest non-majors of all time. In 07 I’m not sure what happened, but he didn’t really seem engaged either, which as I said earlier was typical of tiger some years at the match play
