  • MY MEDICAL ISSUES. I have POTS Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, a condition that affects the autonomic nervous system (including my heart) and causes me to faint among other symptoms. It comes from EDS Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Among other medical issues. I do have PTSD as well from childhood sexual assault that lasted over 10 years. But my fainting is related to my POTS and I can faint anytime, anywhere that I have been standing or walking too long. Basically my heart doesn't pump my blood right and it pools in my legs and I pass out.

    I live in Canada so I don't know about anyone else but when I was in elementary school we often had people with disabilities and service dogs visit the school and answered questions that the children had. They talked about walking sticks, personal disability questions, how to tell if someone was blind, and service dogs. In my community almost all individuals know and understand service dogs are working because they were taught in school. I think it would be beneficial (if you are comfortable) to visit a few schools in your area and teach a generation of children the importance of service dogs.

    • @BabyTXGrl
      @BabyTXGrl 6 років тому +5

      unfortunately most schools don't do this, of course there are always exceptions but a majority of them don't even speak of it! When i went to school yes we had kids with disabilities in the school but they were in self contained special education classes that were pretty much far away from everyone else, you rarely saw them. In smaller communities due to lack of funding they have one school for children with disabilities for about 3-5 school districts so most "main stream" kids don't even see them. This was my experience anyways.

    • @caiyu
      @caiyu 6 років тому +3

      Niki Harper that is a very different experience! Is that in the United States? In Ontario, classrooms and activities are modified to include children with disabilities. Educational assistants are assigned to classrooms to help teachers that have children who have any sort of special needs.
      It’s never to late for people organize special guests to visit schools though. I think teachers and kids would love it.

      i agree 100% unfortunately though most do not, in my experience as a teacher there are so many fears about teaching it wrong, or a child being scared of the dog, or the allergies, it's a lot of red tape and a lot of maybes to even talk about it!

    i mean you can’t expect everyone to know how to act around a service dog. my aunt had a service dog that was by her side since it’s puppyhood. not once did i see my aunt get overwhelmed or angry like you do sometimes. not everyone has been exposed to a service dog, much less one in a store, a place you never see animals.

      well, when you see articles online about a person who complains that the lady walking by with her 3yo won't stop her kid from rattling the fence and poking her kid fingers through the tiny gate gap and attempting to tease two 90lb dogs, who the person has been told are not child-proof... and only tell the kid...the nasty lady won't let the doggies play... instead of "leave the gate alone, those are stranger dogs" and walk her child elsewhere, knowing that 180lbs of dogs could kill 30 lbs of toddler, and she was warned that the dogs weren't mean, but were not kid-proof, and to not let the kid tease them. the dogs were behind a solid fence... but still.. you don't let a little kid tease big dogs. that's like putting out kid-bait.

      Yes because a kid can read his vest. And you can't keep an eye in your kids all the time. Learning is a process. You don't just say something once and kids automatically understand forever. And with how uncommon true service dogs are it may take a long while for kids to get that.

    • @violetbitch9492
      @violetbitch9492 6 років тому +1

      Ashli Caldwell why are those kids not able to read, they don't seem to be that young. My parents taught me to ask every person if I can touch their dog because it might bite or it might be a service dog, I didn't need to see a service dog and disturb it to learn. It's like teachers giving you a test without explaining the subject and then teaching you what you did wrong. You don't need to watch your kid all the time, but not even teaching them that other people's dogs are not public property or zoo animals is a basic thing, either someone or they might get hurt if you don't.

    I appreciate your putting up these videos. Educating people must be exhausting, and I'm sorry that is another burden for you. I had No Idea of the danger until watching your channel. I was educated to ignore Service Dogs when I encountered a dog who had one of her tasks be to pick up items for her owner -a chair user. I did ALL the wrong things when meeting this woman and her service dog. I said Hi, and bent down in front of the dog, offered her the back of my hand. Just ALL the wrong things. The woman was very patient (as you have been) and explained that when a service dog is working they should be ignored so they stay focused for their owner. My shame was real over the guilt I felt for not knowing. Then I realized I didn't know because I hadn't been around anyone with a Service Dog before. Thank you for educating people all the time - sending you strength and patience (and somehow a long-range deflector for people who would try to distract Max).

      MrsMissLisa You shouldn’t have been made to feel ashamed. Most people just don’t know any better...in fact they probably feel like they’re doing the Right thing..being friendly ..NOT making a big deal over someone with a disability. It’s terrible of someone to berate and embarrass someone just being kind.

    Thank you so much for making these videos! I knew very little about serivce dogs before your videos and was just as scared around them as I would be around a normal dog due to very bad experience I had as a child. This has opened my eyes and made me more calm and relaxed around them. I saw one today at Walmart and decided to go in the opposite direction of them only because I had my 2 year old son with me and he is still trying to learn animals and I didn't want him to yell at the service dog and distract him. Thank you so much for your videos and I hope you keep making more!

    • @hisdarlingclementine
      @hisdarlingclementine 6 років тому +2

      Service Dog In Training Chopper that is wonderful that the mother was able to teach the little girl about seeing a serivce animal that not to let it is working. That is what I would have done if my older daughter was with me since she can fully understand what I am saying. Sadly my son has a huge learning disability that he might mimic words but won't understand any words. The only ones he uses correctly is juice and thank you. He calls every one and most animals mommy which we are working on in therapy and can't follow one step direction like to pick up a coat or throw your diaper away. That is why I knew that even if I tried it won't make sense to him and he would not understand it. As the therapy for him progress and he starts to understand and communicate better I'll be able to teach him about the difference between a non serivce animal and a pet with the help of the therapist. I do thank you for your suggestion though and if my son was better in understanding I would start teaching him now. Thank you

    • @pbmechura
      @pbmechura 6 років тому +4

      Karen Bradley
      Not a felony- but this link gives a description per state of what type of interference is an offense and what the fine would be. Most states describe the issue when it is done “knowingly/willingly.” Which is like someone who specifically wants to stop a service animal from doing its task. Which is a rare psychopath, definitely none of the type of people she encounters in these videos who are unaware that saying hi is wrong.

      Spoiler, it's not. Good luck getting a court to do anything because you looked at a service animal. Or said "aww look at that puppy". Unless someone where to legitimately go over and pick up the dog, or kick it while it was trying to "help" its not illegal to distract a service dog unintentionally.

    I was at church on Sunday and there was this guy who was a retired U.S marine and he had a service dog. And one of the volunteers at our church was helping people sit down and he went through the aisle that the guy had his dog with. The dog was in the aisle not blocking the way of course and the guy while he is leaving the aisle he goes down and pets the dog roughly saying “who’s a good boy?!” And then thanked the marine for his service. The guy just said “no problem bud” and watched the volunteer walk away... he looks at his dog and makes him move in between him and his wife so people couldn’t see the dog and couldn’t distract him. Then after the service he went to the owner and all that.. I’m not sure what’s it’s called and told them about it and right then and there the volunteers were called and got a talking to. That was my first experience that I see someone with a service dog have a problem with that.

    The way you addressed the manager as opposed to the employee who actually called out to the dog was wrong. It’s condescending and patronising, why not directly inform the worker of the potential risks? What was the purpose of telling management? The excuse that she was working is invalid, she was scanning groceries and can still engage in conversation. You’re attitude is atrocious, inform people yes and yes I get repeating yourself is irritating but manners cost nothing.

    • @fereallacz_0
      @fereallacz_0 6 років тому +7

      Emma Wright hunny your way of thinking is atrocious and you need a new perspective. She is someone who clearly deals with a lot on a daily basis including randomly collapsing and PTSD . The fact that she still has the courage to go out and run errands on a regular basis is amazing because I would not have the same strength. It is not her job to let people know they should be able to use those same eyes that they're looking at the dog with to read his vest which clear as day says DO NOT DISTRACT IT IS ILLEGAL. People are distracting her dog who has a 1-2 min timeframe to let her know if she is about to collapse. You must have not seen her other video where the guy was calling the dog, she ignored it (as you would have liked) and then 3 mins later she falls and gets a serious concussion. Don't talk until you've been in her shoes and have got multiple concussions all because people wana act like they're 5 yrs old when they see a dog. You wouldn't be too happy and her talking to a manager is the best idea because she can educate all ber employees as a whole instead of this woman having to tell people one by one while she's trying to shop like a normal person.

      Get off your high horse and get on with your day... millions struggle with debilitating anxiety/stress everyday who cant manage to pull themselves from their beds, eat regularly, spend time with family and friends... think yourself lucky you have a well self trained dog to help you run your errands and get through your days.

    I stumbled across your videos a few nights ago and have watched soooo many the past few days as well as other handler's videos, yours are my favorite. But I am soooo glad I came across them. It is so fascinating to me the different tasks and assistance a service dog can perform and I must admit, I, because of you, am educated now and truly enjoy it and look forward to learning more. I am an elementary teacher but stay at home for my kids now and I will most definitely educate my children (as I heard you tell a lady in a store to educate her kids) on what not to do when we encounter a service dog. I NEVER thought that saying hi could have such a devastating impact on a person's well being but because of your well thought out, calm, and knowledgeable way you go about educating people and shooting these videos....well, you will kept us from contributing to the injury of someone else. I look forward to talking to my children about this issue and educating others as well. You are awesome! You should be on Ellen lol! Seriously, thank you and God bless!

    I HATE it when people feel it's necessary to talk to my service dog. Literally everyday I leave my house, some adult tells their kid "Go ask if you can let him!" And he has a Red vest with SERVICE DOG in big letters and a crossed out hand for kids that may not be able to read. He is still young and can be distracted because, as you said, they are not robots. I get severe anxiety that cause me to have asthma attacks and get hives all over my body (weird, I know, I'm told all the time). When he gets distracted, I get anxious. People need to be better educated about service dogs and how to behave around them.

My friend has a service dog his dogs name is Alex. I go with my friend to the store sometimes and I help him out with other people. I tell them,”plz don’t talk to the dog I’m sorry but this dog is a service dog it’s working rn sorry!” Alex is a wonderful service dog for my friend they are best friends. I hate to say it but it almost seems like having Max with you makes you an angrier and more anxious person. Don’t get me wrong. I fully understand he is a life saver for you and no one should be talking to him or distracting him. However you do these videos to show people not to distract service dogs but you’re willingly putting yourself out there with a camera intending to catch someone and get mad at them. It’s only increasing your anxiety. I love what you do but I think taking a different approach would be healthier for you, I think your videos are important so people can learn but I feel it’s adding more stress on you than you need.

    Thank you for posting these videos. I'm a HUGE dog lover, and I think service animals are amazing. But I must admit, I have been guilty of talking to them in the past, and no one ever corrected me. I guess I never thought to compare them to wheelchairs or oxygen tanks. I knew never to touch, but I didn't realize speaking to them could be a distraction. I have taught my girls never to pet, or even ask to pet, but now I will add to that and just let them be. Keep up the good work, you are making a difference!

I posted your other video of when Max missed an alert and you fell and hurt your head to my Facebook page to help get the awareness out there. I was one of those people that didn't understand about distracting a service dog. I thought as long as I didn't pet it, that it was ok. I feel so bad now for the times in the past that I've distracted a service dog. I'm such an avid dog lover and it's a knee jerk reaction to freak out over a cute dog, especially one as cute as Max, but I see how dangerous that can be now. I will never do that again. Thank you so much for your videos. You're getting info out there that I'm pretty sure not a lot of people know about.

    Hi I’m new to your channel. I have new found respect for people with true service dogs. I have a question. How does Max know when you are getting ready to faint? Thank you for letting us in to your life and educating us on proper and safe behavior around a working service dog.

    • @Lycanbride
      @Lycanbride 6 років тому +4

      Max was originally for PTSD and for responding to her syncope (which we now know is POTS). He then showed signs of being able to alert so she shaped it.

    • @siphoncipher849
      @siphoncipher849 6 років тому

      I was gonna guess a sudden drop in blood pressure or heartrate. I was just about to ask this same question to be honest, because I'm curious about just WHAT Max is watching for.

    • @danitaylor691
      @danitaylor691 6 років тому

      I think it’s something to do with her heart rate. I don’t know much about the passing out side of POTS. But, I do know that standing up from a lying position increases heart rate (30-40 beats per minute), drop in blood pressure, and faint like symptoms. So, maybe it’s her heart rate increasing, and her blood pressure dropping that gets him to alert. I don’t know, maybe she’ll reply with the answer.

    for people saying her attitude is wrong and it’s just people passing by, her attitude needs to be firm because max is as she said a lifeline she could get badly hurt and she only has perhaps a minute before she faints, also those few seconds that a passerby comments on the dog, the dog is distracted and could miss an alert. it’s extremely important that max doesn’t miss an alert. if you have a problem then get off her channel.

I actively avoid service dogs, i will take a lounger route in a store or go across the street if i saw a service dog in my path. Service Dogs to help individuals outwith Guide dogs and "hearing" dogs are a relatively new thing here in the UK. Fortunately most Children are taught at school about Guide Dogs because it's common place for schools to raise money for the cause.
    We are taught not to pet or distract the animals when wearing the harness.
    I'm currently teaching my 3 year old as we will very near a training home for the dogs so we see them daily. The trainers also take the dogs passed the schools to desensitise them from screaming children.
    Good luck with the training and spreading your message.
