      Service Dog Paws I dealt with a woman(an employee) that kept harassing me the entire 20 minutes I was in the store. It got to a point where she was just standing in the isle staring at my dog. He alerted but he jumps to alert so she then squealed with delight on how cuuuute & what a huuuuge meatball doggy he is. 🤬(hes a large 98 lb Cane Corso/American Bulldog mix) I started sweating profusely & shaking so then he started nuzzling & barking Bc I still wasn’t down (I’m really trying to work on him not barking it doesn’t happen often but especially not in stores) mind you my dog is vested has SDIT /do not pet/distract / I even have a Hey Karen don’t touch my damn dog patch (lol I know I know) my boyfriend was in the car because I just wanted to run in real quick. It was so awful. I legit lost my shit & ended up cussing her out when she really just wouldn’t stop. I’m in CT so I don’t think we have actual harassment of SD laws I need to look more into it. Then last week I was going into my doctors clinic & the security guard stopped me at the door & refused to let me in saying that the director said I wasn’t allowed to come in with my dog & that my counselor was coming down. I tried to explain calmly that he is a service dog like I’ve explained the 2 weeks prior. My counselor came down & said according to the director she said I can’t bring him in without papers/Id card & a doctors note stating exactly why I need him & he needs to have a professional vest on or he can’t come in. Mind you I had him still with me & I got upset so he started alerting I was so stressed out & embarrassed I brought him back to the car where he was frantic & stressed out himself (I’ve never seen him like that) my boyfriend was trying so hard to calm him down but he was just so focused on me. In my frustration I yelled enough! Down! And he laid down in the back😐 I went in did what I had to do & I was so dizzy and I said well if I pass out it’s on you and they said: well we have nurses you’ll be fine. I told my counselor to go on ada.gov where you’ll find REAL information about SD’s because me explaining the laws were obviously not making any difference. Later that day he called & told me the director (still after reading the laws) said he can come in with a vest & a muzzle (wait what?) or he can’t come in at all. I’m scheduled to go next week and my counselor said he’d have my back on filing a grievance. What would you do in this situation? Specifically It’s a methadone clinic where I unfortunately have to go twice a month. I know I’m calling myself out for people to talk shit but whatever I’m genuinely unsure of how to handle it

    Goddd, stuff like that is SO annoying. I understand an “aww” before someone realizes it’s a service dog or because they genuinely just don’t realize that can be distracting (people do that to my SD all the time), but for a grown adult to growl/bark at a dog and continue even after being asked to stop? SO rude. Unless they have a disability themselves that causes them to do it, like maybe Tourette’s or autism, in which case I can understand not being able to control it (I have some vocal tics bc of my OCD, and they SUCK, so I get it), there’s NO reason to do something like that to any dog, ESPECIALLY a service dog. It’s so disrespectful. People need to learn basic manners smh

      I always feel so bad when I walk by a service dog and my brain goes "dog dog dog cute dog cute dog tell them they have a cute dog awww dog dog dog" and I'm trying so hard not to say anything but it's eating me up inside😂 and I'll be like in the next isle over like quietly "that was a cute dog aw I love dogs did you see that dog aw dog..." Just talking to myself like I'm mad pointing the dog out to myself away from the dog.. 😅 can't focus on anything then suddenly hyper focused on the wrong thing...

      @@Carlie_flower Aw, obviously I can’t speak for every other handler, but I think it’s safe to say that most of us don’t mind compliments on our dogs as long as you talk to us, not them! I always appreciate when people tell me stuff like “I love your dog” or “he’s so cute/well behaved/etc.”, as long as they’re talking to me and not him. People going “awwww hi buddy!! You’re so cute!! Look at you!! What a good boy!!” in that high pitched dog voice annoys me and is distracting, but something respectful like “your dog is really cute” or “aw, he’s so good” is always nice! Basically compliment the handler on their dog like you’d compliment them on their outfit or their hair, and they’ll probably appreciate it as long as you’re talking to *them* and not their dog! ☺️

    • @Carlie_flower
      @Carlie_flower 3 роки тому +3

      @@peachy4358 that's so good to know. ❤️ I have had a few times where I just couldn't help myself and it slips out but I never talk to the dog just the handler, I actually do that with all dogs if I do say something. The people usually smile 😅 so I always am like wheeeewww. My mom always taught me never to distract a service dog but she also taught me that you never talk to a dog first, always their human haha cause like, you don't know that dog. You could get bit or worse. That advice has been proven to me soooo many times. Once at ren faire a lady was petting this person's lab and she put her face too close... Dog bit her nose and I had to ban the dog from the event... And more recently my best friend was at a shelter and we had to pull her out of a kennel because the dog had decided he was going to rip her lip off... as someone in the "pet care" career field I have tons of these stories... 🤔 Now I'm not saying that a service dog will do that but all animals can be unpredictable. My own border collie went ballistic the other day on the neighbors dog and she's usually very dog friendly. So never fully trust a strange dog just like you'd never trust a strange human lol
      This is why I never understood why someone would just randomly approach any dog, let alone service dogs, and touch them or talk to them ESPECIALLY when their harness says NO TOUCH NO TALK 🤔 people are so weird sometimes...🤦🏻‍♀️

    You can't fix stupid, and you can't quarantine it either. I'm sorry that this happened to you; Mya did so great in her refocusing. This same thing happened to me while I was ordering at a McDonalds once from an employee on break (turned out to be best friends cousin) and I turned to the manager who was assisting me and said "I thought McD's had a no pet policy so how'd this one slip through the cracks". The manager replied, "Oh don't worry the dog catcher is about to shove him out the door into the unemployment line." Dude was fired by his own aunt and caught crap at home from his mom.

    OH, oh! Today my SDIT went to Walmart for the first time.
    First off, the entrance man that I see regularly, only asked if she was a service dog and I nodded and said yes as I continued to walk with my sister. He didn't even ask what tasks she performs. To me I get a little upset because so many people can say yes and continue on with a fake service dog.
    But that besides the point! Lulu did so well! She didn't get distracted and performed her blocks so well! She was in a down stay when a kid walked by and she payed not mind to her. And she even gave me a small alert that I should leave the spot I'm in. (Which she does by touching/bopping my leg with her nose) I had looked around for a bench but they have been removed so I just stayed standing in line and moved closer to my sister. She looked upset at me but continued with her blocking and paying attention to surroundings! So proud of her and we didn't run into any PA issues.

I explained to him why not to do it and he walked away doing it. Then he followed us through the store and continued to do it by distance. This just made me feel better, (misery loves company right?) my SDit was with me in the ER, they left us for 3 1/2 hours. A man kept complimenting Baron, and five people remarked how well trained he was. To me, he was jumpy and I realize it was too big an ask right now- just too long. That man came back a third time, while I was browning out he snuck up and made kissy noises right behind me! 🤬 Baron gave one loud bark, and a hospital staff member told me to take him out. I was in too much pain to argue, so he went in the car. On hindsight it was too big and ask for that many hours (I shouldn’t have been waiting either!) but I had already told that man several times he was working, and looking back I shouldn’t put all the blame on myself. I don’t know who the noises were even aimed at, I don’t want Baron to be reactive- but quietly he’s also my hero.

Talked to the manager about and she said there is nothing we can't do anything about it. Then I proceeded to say yes you can and she still said the same exact thing to me. and then I went on and said if I pass out in your store out of my manual wheelchair you could be sued and had to pay for my medical treatment. And then I just rolled on out with my husband and of course my service dog Gracie.

      Period no one should do this to a service dig.
      You never interact in anyway with a service dog. The moment you draw the service Dogs attention away it can miss an alert to something like a seizure and that could hurt or kill an disabled owner.
      It's also illegal under the ADA which states:
      No person shall interfere with the use of a service dog by obstructing, stairing, touching, speaking, intimidating, or otherwise jeopardizing the safety of the user or animal. Whoever violates this subsection shall be guilty of a class B misdemeanor.
      If an individual continues in the action of interacting and or distracting the service dog leading to the missed alert and injury of the disabled handler (owner ) the person would be guilty of attempted manslaughter.

    I just found your channel and have been watching your videos and learned a good bit about service dogs. I was wondering if one would possibly help with my anxiety. I've been looking up a lot of stuff about how service dogs help people with anxiety and trying to figure out if one would help me. I showed my mom some of your videos and videos from other channels with service dogs. my stepdad mentioned getting one. I don't know if he was joking or not. I really don't know how bad my anxiety is compared to others but I really don't like to be around people. I broke out crying on my first day of my current school because the sub told me to be louder and everyone was focused on me and I felt anxious even before that, but I'm pretty sure anxiety because of that is normal. I sometimes feel overwhelmed trying to answer simple questions even from my parents. And I always feel hot and it gets hard to breathe when I'm at stores. I don't know.. It's been stuck on my mind.

      Best thing to do is if you have a therapist, phyiciatrist to talk to them see if you can get a recmiodation for a phyicatric service dog to alert to anxitey/ anxitey attack and block people from going to you .
      They are furry angels.

    do you know what exactly might qualify someone for a service dog? I dont have any "serious" medical conditions but im extremely prone to passing out, falling over, etc. I can't walk far on my own cause my body just gives up,, and was wondering if it was maybe something to look into.

    • @ServiceDogPaws
      @ServiceDogPaws  Рік тому +1

      Look into mobility service dogs. Just google service dog programs near you and you’ll need to inquire about what services they provide. Fainting is medical- but a lot of programs do mobility so you have a harness on the dog to assist you from falling and helping you walk

    I really really HATE when people bark at emotional support dogs/service animals in public ( not in public stores or any mall ) it’s just so frustrating when others think they can interact with an animal when the animal just thinks your a dumb human. It’s also really disrespectful to do it if your grown up and know the rules of a service animal/emotional support dog ( unless you have a disorder that makes your mind into a child’s mind ). So dumb like seriously.

Like i don't own a service dog, and i will sometimes complement a dog but i would never purposely distract a service dog. It will really sad that there is people out there who will put someone's life at risk just to be funny.

    I have been thinking about a service dog. I already have a dog that is able to be trained to be one.
    You may be wondering why I need one. Nobody in my family knows about these problems, I’ve been too scared to tell them. But I have depressed thoughts all the time, like wondering why I’m here and if I should be alive anymore, but at the same time I have an uncontrollable fear of things that wouldn’t fear other people normally, like if I would die in my sleep, or if there are murderers in my closet or outside, and scared my loved ones and pets will die, I know lots of people have that but I just am constantly thinking about it and I can’t do normal things because of that fear. I also feel like self harming myself so bad at random times,
    And the last thing, is recently I’ve been shaking and heart pounding at things that wouldn’t even bother me before, (ex: asking my parents if I could do/make something, scary video games, UA-cam videos that have something traumatic in them, even watching videos like this) it sounds like ptsd but I can’t think of anything that would cause that. If someone asks me if it harms my daily life, I’d say yes. I just sit there in bed, crying, wondering why can’t this feeling go away. And all of this I feel is messing up my young life. I don’t know if I should have a service dog, I’d be glad to take opinions.

      Sounds like you need to talk to a therapist or something more than you need a service dog. Those things you described really arent medical issues or disabilities that would legally require a service dog. None of what you described is PTSD in the slightest. Heres the description of PTSD so you understand it better - Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, or rape or who have been threatened with death, sexual violence or serious injury. How old are you to think you have medical issues? You sound like a young kid or teen who is just having some life issues.

    I want to ask - in your country it is illegal to talk/interact with service dogs but to they need to have a paper that tells it's a service dog? Because in my country it has to have a legal paper for that, so in wondering if it's only case in here. They can also ask you to show this paper if you want to go into shop with service pet.

      In America under the ADA there is no registery, ID or paper work.
      Only two questions are legally asked.
      1. Is that a service dog needed for a disability?
      2. What tasks does it do for you?
      Here it's illegal to distract a service dog too. In fact it's a misdemeanor punishable by jail time, a large fine and community service.

      @@dreamersfantasysutdio5322 Ooh, thank you. So it's a lot different. Here the dog have training from pup and have paper it was trained to be service dog. If it didn't get the papers because he failed tests (yup, there are some tests for behavior and other things but I don't know exactly) it can't be service dog and doesn't have papers. I believe they done the papers thing because people were overusing this to take their aninals everywhere or something. That's what I assume happened. Anyway thank you for answering me. Love to know all the differences between countries. 😊❤
