4 years to make the album.
it is quite obvious that no one else controls the portishead machine except themselves. i cant say the same about other people that make music.
Portishead still sounds up to date.
'It's out but it's beautifully in, with it's outness'.
'If you were into Sting, which I'm not, but if you were....'
Such brilliant quotes.
the baby is modular
"I asked my daddy to show me a dinosaur and he showed me an ARP".
Why do things from 2008 now look like 1988. I was there in that time. Video wasn't that crappy then... was it?
I know right
It’s the digital encoding. Back then, UA-cam was macromedia flash movies, far from 4k mp4!
He’s working on the second album so it’s 1997-1998 😉
@@sydchelyhotwheelsracingthis video is about Third not Portishead Self Titled so 2008
how can you be so lost lol@@sydchelyhotwheelsracing
Portishead are quality musicians that only put out quality art.
Thanks for making the sour time's more life affirming.
Yep true artists - and what Adrian says about grim, sneaky and de-constructive goings on is so true. He’s a good guy.
P E A C E : )
The guy is a genius
I'm not at all sure what other commoners, affluent and/or afficionados consider modern day musical genius, but it's quite clear to me that Reznor, Utley, Chemical Brothers, Dan the automator and Dj Muggs are the modern day virtuosos when it comes to production and perfection.
Jim Thirlwell taught Reznor everything he knows
Fascinating interview, this is the first time I've ever seen a synth set up like this. I wondered how they created such incredible sounds on Third. 4 years of work...wow.
that stuff about the creative process, being stuck, aiming for a particular thing, this is what i love to hear about in interviews it’s inspiring and shows sometimes it’s a slog from one end to the other. not some magical five minute song that wrote itself
The best 15 mins I've spent on UA-cam in YEARS... AWESOME stuff! Thanks so much for posting this... More, more more......!
Give the baby credit. She hung there 😊
+tallgeese1 also credit to the dad, not all dads are able to make their babies feel comfortable in their lap
Such cool indifference to her dad's vintage gear! Long may it continue!
Yeah my dads awesome
Also thank you(:
Todular
Little baby stayed calm for almost 15 minutes, that is really awsome, I mean, music is awsome too. jejejejejeje
Greatest band ever! 💯
What an easy-going, top bloke. Thanks for posting!
In fact this is an AWESOME interview (15 mins !!). And full credit to the interviewer who did a fantastic job in every sense (i wish i had his job !!). i wish ALL interviews were of this quality.
Utely is a real MUSO !! He is really 'tuned in'. Interesting comments on 'Dirty Harry' and he obviously knows what he wants and what he is looking for. Seems like a top guy all round !!
That is the chillest toddler I’ve ever seen.
I always love when musicians come across as any person you could run into at Guitar Center. He seems like such a normal guy.
Agreed about the interviewer...too bad so many of them out there just want their chance to meet the stars, with no thought given to actually making a connection between themselves, the artists, and the audience.
I used to live in Bristol. This is one chap I'd love to hang out with for a day! Seems like a fantastic person and a musical genius.
It's so...beautiful...
Very good interview, thanks.
Amazing!
That was brilliant! thanks for uploading and cheers, adrian, for being so normal.
Great interview.
So where did Portishead get their Darkness from ? well I know that the year before their debut ablum and ours ( both albums released in 1994 ) Geoff was really into Black Sunday by Cypress Hill, they were using our studio in Bristol a lot at the time ( which they went on to co-own ) so our paths crossed often and we were working on our music which was really dark Gothic Rock/Metal often with horror filmscore style keyboards in it to, I reckon that some of that darkness must have rubbed off on `em, heh heh
In the background - at the right of his head - you see the EMS VCS3, a wonderful machine that's will be certainly on my future gear list.
"it's beautifully in, with its out-ness".......
I like this humble genius guy
This is one of the Most Inspirational Videos I've seen EVER! And I've got to Got to Bed now! What kinda shit is that? Sleep? After finding out how the Portishead Album was Done? I've Been listening to it for AGES now! And have even done an extended Version of Machine Gun! Totally Amazing Sound!
Oh How am I going to getto sleep now?!! What a Video! Wow. So inspired. Help me! Dying of Inspiration right now man!
Muy bien very good...animo con todas las cosas y vayamos con alegrías..
Great interview !! Gonna check out some more of this guy !!
PORTISHEAD forever 🅿
@davidmckenna96 Its Adrian.
Awesome interview. The kind of technical shit that's lacking on youtube.
Thank you :-)
@sonicstate do you know what happened to the rest of this video? Where he shows his guitars and the singing bowls? I know it wasn’t a dream and that it actually exists somewhere
Really interesting interview.
7:48 "It's out, but it's beautifully in ...with it's outness."
the ARP!!!!! we learn to use that in electronic music class back in '83 #pinknoise #whitenoise
I wish they would re-upload this video in a better format. 240p is low!
That’s me(:
no it isn't
no it isnt i know the real one
6:09 You Sunk my Battleship
9:46 Does he say Seal Orchestra? CL Orchestra? Any ideas?
Siel Orchestra. There's a great in-depth interview with Adrian Utley on the instruments and production of Third - www.soundonsound.com/people/adrian-utley-recording-third
ur dad makes fantastic n dark triphop. b proud
I am proud dw
Love P3.
"Its like synth Crack, really..."
:) modular time warp. I love it
what separates men from boys is the price and size of their toys
8:59 Baby is like "mmmbooooooring! 4 years to record an album... give me an empty box and I will create a whole universe in seconds!!"
I'd die for digging in that "P"-Box under the ARP
His baby is so well behaved
It is like getting into old campervans. Lol!
The MS-20 on the top shelf above the ARP looks lonely.
Its the Siel Orchestra
sehr sympatisch !
thanks !
cute girl!! she's super chilled and relaxed with her Dad
Why thank you 😆😂
i wish i was that kid...
@kyuss Directly. Some Like the VC3 for example will be a Single Jack as it's a Mono Poly Synth. But they All have Jack outs. But the Last Time I saw one of those sell, it went for £7,000. EMS are Even Better than Moog.. And they were Beofre aswel.
Some may say it's the Key to Portisheads Sound. There's nothing else like it, & nothing else that has Not Patch Cables, but Patch "Pins"! I've Studied! Sorry! Fawning arn't I! But yeh, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop used1 a LOT! Not4 the DW theme tho.
I heard it too!! Fucking hilarious!!
The baby didn't made any sound, probably will communicate exclusively with dad's oscillators.
First word: 440hz?
Signed by Bob... wow. want it.
2:49 To use with the Mooooog. 😢
that will be:-)
whats the track at the beginning ?
Machine gun
Polly was quite tired. She put up the good fight though. Honestly what they were saying was Greek, I was just amazed that Polly lasted that long.
Yes it was very hard I tried not to fall asleep
As someone said: " While mens grow up, they only change the price of their toys"
is that a boss dr55?
Does behbeh has 1v/oct?
A?
Roads...... :)
synth crack
Question: When recording with these synths, do they record with a mic, or plug it in directly?
Could just take a picture of the patches and settings..
This was before smartphones
@samsaturos 423
Machine Gun
11:15 was this a fart ?
a comment about the baby ...
0:14 Baby is not impressed :-)
If that filter is the holy grail, but it didn't get used on the album, then is it really important? Nope.
its pronouced mohg
He sometimes seems as though he has no idea what he is talking about.
Who cares?
Amazing!
