Adrian mentioned about Syd Barrett's tone and old strings. I also think the pickups were wound percussive and woody. I recently had some broadcaster pickups in a Tele and it nailed the Syd sound

    Hi!
You people should do this more often!
I’m watching this on 09-12-‘23 for crying out loud.
I love all the people of Radiohead, because they’ve studied not only music, but sound too!
    Hope everyone is doing well!!!
I play bass: I’m in love with low mids, 😄.
Best to everyone! Best for 2024!
    🖖

This is like a dream lineup of musicians I just love. I also just love hearing the massive difference in approach between each of them. At the same time the all have the same foundation

Ed, I’d love your 64 335! My grandfathers 1984 es335 was the guitar I learned on after inheriting it upon his passing. I have such a soft spot for those guitars and can’t imagine what it would be like to write on an instrument with so much history and mileage around the world. Much love to you all for this gift of a conversation!

I’ve heard of so many players with a Kemper and their guitar on a flight to a gig. That’s having your shit together, but getting to be a top flight guitarist in a killer band….
    Priceless!

In the past (before I was born in ‘72) and in the later ‘70’s, everything was about mids!
Than, in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s came the shitty sub kick drum sounds at live concerts. You couldn’t actually mix bassguitar, kick drum and synths anymore, because the kick drum was way down there where it shouldn’t be!
We needed freekin five string basses to be heard (felt, actually), and the synths came to get us of course...
Then came downtuned guitars!! Not Em or D, but they tuned down to freekin C and B!
Because of that, bassguitar wasn’t in the mix anymore, and every other instrument had to be in the higher frequencies!
Because we took the bassguitar, synths and kickdrum from low mid to extremely low end, and the guitars went below that in heavier genres, we lost the luciouds beautiful mids for low tuned instruments!
Just listen to any ABBA song or even Earth Wind an Fire Song! Listen to any Queen or Bowie record!
    There’s your beautiful mix again!!
Radiohead mostly does a great job, mixing their albums! I love the bass and drums! Synths sometimes going beneath, but there’s a strong and exciting low-mid presence in the rhythm section, like there should be!
Because of that low mid presence, this band sounds heavier than any metal band, kills them!
And, the other instruments and strong vocals get to be in the high mids, where they should be.
Great music is all about mids! Don’t forget, because that’s where our brain and ears live, 😉.
    🖖

apparently Neil Young is also keen on keeping his strings for as long as possible, i just wait until they feel yucky or start rusting

I play in various bands. Been doing so since ‘89. I play bass and bass synth.
Let me tell you: we don’t get the great PA’s and sound people!
Joke: In one of my bands we play Radiohead music too. And music by Peter Gabriel and some late Bowie stuff. I can’t bring any bass cabinets by any brand!
I have to bring two (Taurus) amps and two HK Premium Pro 2x10 PA subs (with their low pass filters taken out) to get a decent Radiohead bass tone!!! That’s two 800 watt cabs 🤣. Most of the time FOH will only take my direct bass DI-sound. I use a few effects. For Radiohead songs, it’s just an eq and a JAM pedals fuzz. But for Bowie or late ‘70’s early ‘80’s sounds, I need my synthy pedals. They won’t (can’t) take that: they’re too ignorant.
Only sometimes I use an octaver, for Depeche Mode stuff, but FOH-idiots get scared, always. Because there’s so much low and high end comming from the drums and guitars!
I’d need a new Ampeg 8x10 every week if I would use those... They just can’t handle the low end I need with my little Fender P or StingRay...
Just because the kick drums are tuned too low, and the guitars are too low and too high.
In a club, that is..., every freekin week!🤣.
IMO: modern drum sounds and guitarsounds (too much low end) are the cause!
Not the beautiful mids that are on the actual albums...
    🖖

New electric guitar strings every day would be torture. If using drive, they take a few days to smooth out.
