Ragnvaldr's obituary after visiting a dungeon of fear and hunger: - A proud warrior was scared by the outline of a door in the darkness and shot himself dead
Ooh, so phobias ''work''. I legit thought phobias were a scare tactic, since I never found the difference between getting my teeth kicked in from getting my teeth kicked in while being scared
A buddy of mine described it pretty well. This is a "Gaslightcore" game, most mechanics seem way more impactfull than they are, maybe not supposed to be like that but it is how it is.
There should be more effects of phobias outside of combat, for example: Characters with erotophobia shouldn't be able to transform into Marriage or join the bunnymasks Rhabdophobia can't cast spells Zoophobia can't recruit Moonless Necrophobia can't do necromancy Also certain characters shouldn't have certain phobias due to their backstory, so Cahara can never start with erotophobia, and Enki can't start with rhabdophobia
In my first play-through with Cahara, I accidentally clicked on the ‘go to brothel’ option before going into dungeon and he gained an itch on his crotch and erotophobia… Bro was traumatized after he got an STD
Ideas: * While Weakness is active, you lose Mind every turn and every time you take damage * While Weakness is active, you have a chance to lose your turn (being too scared to act); maybe a coin flip at the start of your would-be turn? * Weakness can be temporarily cured/prevented by drugs * Trading the girl to the jellyfish lady will get rid of your Phobia and replace it with Courage, granting you improved evasion, damage & damage reduction for the rest of your run. The only other way to get this effect would be to perform the 2nd marriage (though the 1st marriage would at least wipe away your current Phobia) * Having the attention of a creature that triggers your phobia reduces your character's movement speed by half (or, alternatively, it doubles it but makes you susceptible to being surprised, giving the enemy an extra turn)
I had a sort of similar idea that phobias can be counteracted by keeping your mind above a threshold, say 80 for an example. But as you said it goes down slightly every turn and more if you take damage from said enemy. That'd make it still impactful, but also something you can interact with more. Plus, since it's more easily avoided this way, you can also make the downsides stronger.
@@zepol1000 I would also suggest adding some interesting interactions with phobias, or at least some flavor text for each (Like erotophobia making the character completely insane - 0 mind after the umm.... thing)

Oh wow, i only recently remembed about this game and watching your videos about it years ago, i was surprised to find you still making them. That's very dedicated of you.
I hope your event went well!! Phobias reducing your mind when attacked make sense. Although, because it's fear and hunger I could even see a small chance you lose your action or your character does a random action (which could be really evil as when you reach 50 mind or less you unlock suicide), although that makes panphobia even worse, yet incentivizes giving away the girl. Of course you would still be a monster if you did so but you would have the option. Maybe also include a consumable like a vial or herb to ignore the effects for a short time I think phobias should reduce evasion and increase damage across all types of damage. Maybe the overworld effect could be reduced speed when the associated enemy targets you. Most of these phobias can also include a non-combat problem they introduce. For example, erotophobia would not allow you to create a marriage, or necrophobia would not allow you to use skeletons or blood golem On how to influence which phobia so if you understand the mechanic you can do something, the first enemy that causes you to drop to 1-20 HP causes one of their associated phobias. that way, if you want a specific phobia, you would have to intentionally let yourself be damaged. Regardless of these ideas, there is a lot of potential with this mechanic that F&H could benefit from. We'll just have to wait and see how F&H 3 handles it
I've some ideas as well for Phobias: *If a phobia is triggered, at all times evasion is lowered by instead 20% and ALL damage taken is increased by 10% *Affected character's mind deteriorates faster over time than usual. *Below 80 mind with a phobia triggered a number of things could happen... Drop(unequip) weapon, miss a turn(affected character cowers in fear), affected character may fumble and damage themselves, or another party member... or affected character may actually RUN AWAY.(You can find them later cowering somewhere nearby though, and YES, this can happen to your main character... aside from the cowering nearby of course. The run away event has a much lower chance to happen at high mind values, but might actually happen the moment they hit an extremely low value, like around 25 mind.) *You will get a warning a turn before these things will happen to a character, and when the event happens, it will trigger a coin flip. *Panophobia(The fear of everything.. don't know if I spelled it right..) won't trigger the 'RUN AWAY' event.(Can you imagine how annoying that would be? xD)
As funny as the contradictory phobias thing is, I think that something that could boost them "lore-wise" but not really mechanically is each character having a single or a pool of their own phobias. Even if the mechanic is complete nonsense, at least it would work as characterization. The dungeons of fear and hunger are terrifying on their own, but each character having a different reaction toward different terrors makes that even more interesting. Making it entirely random really takes away from that.
i find it funny that fear and hunger 2 has so much more content and things to do but he still finds more content to upload on the first game, which isnt a bad thing, its just funny
I feel like if I were to implement phobia into a game I'm making, I'd probably introduce a minor increase to defense but significantly reduce damage output of all types, but then add an increase crit chance...I don't know if I'll add a coinflip mechanic, I'd probably just rely on a hidden RNG system for whether attacks hit or not, but I would increase the hit chance of attacks on characters with a phobia, depending on a few factors based on playable character, enemy, and other contextual things
Bro can't handle the game confirming Sir Seymour is hot or Cahara is envisioning everyone in their underwear like Squidward did in that one episode of SpongeBob with Squillem Fancyson in it.

One thing that does seem like an interesting fix is to instead make it so when a phobia is triggered, characters enter either a fight, flight, or freeze response, raising and lowering certain stats while also gaining other effects. (Fight becoming uncontrollable at times or freeze losing turns, stuff like that) It allows for more playing around the mechanic, and really builds up the enemies that cause fear to trigger
The sheer fact gro goroth just kinda fucks you up despite of the fobia is the reason I have never bothered trying that ending a second time Good ol Funger spaghetti code
Grande video Frapollo, questo sembra un video risposta a quello di Kirou, dove tu però fai un passo ulteriore definendo il gioco stupido pieno di pecche. Ora lo guardo
I feel like it was probably added early in development as a cool concept, then left alone because it couldn't be finished until the battle system/enemy roster was complete (because that would determine the types of phobias and where they apply - thus why many enemies don't have phobias or have phobias that don't make sense). Then by the time it was returned to, the battle system was filled with so much spaghetti it would be too time intensive/technically difficult to rework phobias to work with it.
I know it's been a while since this video was posted, but ever since I watched SuperEyepatchWolf's video on Fear & Hunger, I've been down a rabbit hole and binging both your and Conner's content lol. But I agree with all of your points at the end and there are a couple things I'd personally add for harder difficulties or make it more apparent in said difficulties: 1. You should take extra damage from magical attacks too. I'm not sure how hard this would be to program, but I think it doesn't make sense that you only take extra damage from physical attacks and it would make enemies who use magic even scarier(Though, one could make it to where the magic doesn't do AS much extra damage since spells hit really fucking hard). 2. Redistribute certain phobias so that the Greater Blight invokes teratophobia and zoophobia(Since, in lore, the Winged and Greater Blights were Lizardmen). Honestly, eratophobia from a fucking T. rex makes no sense to me unless it just decided to whip out little blight. 3. There should be another type of phobia in Theophobia, which is the fear of God or religion. And I think making it apply to both New Gods and Sylvian makes the most sense due to Gro'Goroth and the God of Fear and Hunger already putting that condition on you. 4. When an enemy triggers a phobia, you have a reduced chance to hit the target. This, to me, makes the decision to fight a battle you would be in a disadvantage in more impactful as some people freeze when they are scared. This will be more important in 6. 5. In the late game and specifically when you've killed the Crow Mauler, White Angel, and Skin Granny, you should be able to remove phobias by learning a recipe from the older Francois(Fear and Hunger and maybe Terror and Starvation, not really sure) using an Elixir of Mind and Opium Powder(Though, it won't cure Theophobia for game balance sake). 6. In Hard Mode, there is a 10% chance that a character cannot act due to fear. They may not be perfect and they might be either unnecessary or rather cruel, but I tried to be reasonable. Hell, a couple might just be stupid, but I still wanted to share. Hope you have a cool or warm pillow(Depending on your preference) tonight. As of writing this, you are still streaming Blasphemous and I'm tuning in now. Good luck, my guy!
Resetting the run and savescumming is actually lore-friendly: You're just jumping to another cycle in the greater scheme of things, one where things align properly

Good luck on the theatre stuff, man! You can do it!
Maybe also include a consumable like a vial or herb to ignore the effects for a short time
I think phobias should reduce evasion and increase damage across all types of damage.
Maybe the overworld effect could be reduced speed when the associated enemy targets you.
Most of these phobias can also include a non-combat problem they introduce. For example, erotophobia would not allow you to create a marriage, or necrophobia would not allow you to use skeletons or blood golem
On how to influence which phobia so if you understand the mechanic you can do something, the first enemy that causes you to drop to 1-20 HP causes one of their associated phobias. that way, if you want a specific phobia, you would have to intentionally let yourself be damaged.
Regardless of these ideas, there is a lot of potential with this mechanic that F&H could benefit from. We'll just have to wait and see how F&H 3 handles it
Frapollo's "KILL ME" killed me.
Also good luck on your performance. Amaze everyone with your knowledge about Funger!
7:22 "is that a DOOR?!" had me laughing so hard. 😂😂
I've some ideas as well for Phobias:
*If a phobia is triggered, at all times evasion is lowered by instead 20% and ALL damage taken is increased by 10%
*Affected character's mind deteriorates faster over time than usual.
The run away event has a much lower chance to happen at high mind values, but might actually happen the moment they hit an extremely low value, like around 25 mind.)
*You will get a warning a turn before these things will happen to a character, and when the event happens, it will trigger a coin flip.
*Panophobia(The fear of everything.. don't know if I spelled it right..) won't trigger the 'RUN AWAY' event.(Can you imagine how annoying that would be? xD)
ERM ACKSUALLY, the Greater Blight is a dinosaur, and dinosaurs made love in the past.
Making it entirely random really takes away from that.
good luck frapollo!!! YOU WILL DO GREAT
i find it funny that fear and hunger 2 has so much more content and things to do but he still finds more content to upload on the first game, which isnt a bad thing, its just funny
Good luck Frapollo!
Bro can't handle the game confirming Sir Seymour is hot or Cahara is envisioning everyone in their underwear like Squidward did in that one episode of SpongeBob with Squillem Fancyson in it.
I would love for you to check out blasphemous
I'm sure you'll love with since it has the same gritty and dark world as fear and hunger, but with a Spanish and Andalusian twist
Ragnavaldr should have no phobia as a feature of his stoic character.
He is severely traumatised what r you on about
he watched his family die in front of him the fuck
@@K-yu-ko8dvI mean, it could make sense. Dude has nothing else to lose, he got only one life goal, to kill Le'Garde. It makes sense he wouldn't be afraid, since he doesn't have anything valuable waiting for him outside
Maybe on an easier difficulty he & Enki could have "no phobia", but that'd be it.
Or one of the alternate starting bonuses characters could achieve
@@DBArtsCreators YOU PICKED THE TWO MOST TRAUMATISED ONES THEY HAVE SO MUCH TO BE SCARED OF!!!
I legit guessed none of them were certain hits.
Damn you, Frapollo! You tricked me AGAIN!!
I didn't know you were part of a troupe! Best of luck!!!
Good luck w the play!! I hope you guys had a lot of fun!!
Hey Frapollo! Buona fortuna con il teatro eh :)
E bel video come sempre ;D
Great video as always
Gl on your performance!
"That door may be our greatest foe yet"
i get so hype when you say "fear and hunger" at the beginning of the video very nice showmanship
7:22 Why did that make me laugh as much as it did? 🤣
You know you're cooked when a door is more intimidating than you.
sir seymor after this video: i can't help it i'm just too good looking
The sheer fact gro goroth just kinda fucks you up despite of the fobia is the reason I have never bothered trying that ending a second time
Good ol Funger spaghetti code
0:28 flawed, frustrating to deal with and stupid? Oh, I know, the whole game itself
Good luck on the performance mate
Grande video Frapollo, questo sembra un video risposta a quello di Kirou, dove tu però fai un passo ulteriore definendo il gioco stupido pieno di pecche.
Ora lo guardo
Good luck with the show Frap!
But I agree with all of your points at the end and there are a couple things I'd personally add for harder difficulties or make it more apparent in said difficulties:
I almost lost it when ragnavaldr shotted himself and his phobia to doors made him deal critical damage to himself.
2:20 This joke releases much dopamine.
Best part of phobias is that they are shown below character's name. It's giving game a flavor.
Good luck with your performance
Ragnvaldr self killing by throwing a fcking arrow in front of him is a truly Mista moment
