While the modern day Cavalier switches back and forth between being an elaborately-dressed thief or a mental patient who thinks he's a real-life musketeer living in modern times, the Golden Age version with the wealthy socialite alter ego was a collector of esoteric antiques, curios, and just plain knickknacks who became a costumed villain when he couldn't purchase the junk he wanted, either because the owner did not want to sell or he didn't have the available funds. In this modern era of hoarding as a recognized mental illness, this version of the Cavalier would actually be kind of relevant.
Believe it or not, Cavalier was once engaged in a closeted gay relationship with other swashbuckling Batman villain Captain Stingaree. There's nothing really important in knowing that. It's just a fun fact.
That just made them both twice as interesting to me. It makes sense, they have a lot in common. They're both weird sword dudes who are usually just chilling in the background whenever there's a big group shot of Batman villains.
I found out about the Cavalier for the first time in a book on the History of Batman. Since then, I actually looked up both "Blades" and his first couple of appearances from the 40s. I have to admit, while he's far from the greatest Bat-Villain of all time, I do enjoy him quite a bit, and consider him something of an underrated villain. The version from "Blades" is probably the incarnation I appreciate the most, simply because he's a more interesting character in my opinion, and I think there could be room for that version in some more modern takes on the rogue. But the Mortimer Drake portrayal is a lot of fun, too, simply due to how flamboyant and strange he is. He's a little bit like the Mad Hatter in that way, I think. Anyway, I am glad to hear you enjoy him, too. :)
I could honestly see this guy being reworked into a decent C or B list villain. A guy with a Hoarding addiction and an obsession with swashbuckling rogues becoming one to acquire the things he wants. You could even give him a modified Guys Fawkes mask, like the ones from V for Vendetta to conceal who he really is. Having him be a mental patient would fit with the collecting/hoarding idea as that is a real world problem that unfortunately hits home for many.
I believe he was also the JLA reboot out of costume after countdown. Black Lightening meets him to get information, after outing to Vixen as a couple with Captain Stingaree
It's really upset me this guy does not become batman's top villain. i mean,he have a gimmick and a proper background story to be batman arch-nemesis,still they don't mention this guy quite often
Surasi Sansanga are you serious how in what way can he compete with the joker and rah al ghul. the 40s was a silver age were violence was void of comics and while I think yes he could be revamped to work in the age of today him being batmans main villain doesn't feel right somehow joker has nilism and is the like alternate batman if he saw the whole world as a black joke he could be a reciting villian but I don't think him being batman arch nemieses would be right
I'm also a bit of a fan of the Cavalier, probably because of my love for classic swashbucklers. Perhaps he could become the enemy of another hero, like Green Arrow perhaps? Only time will tell.
I have an idea for making the Cavalier somewhat interesting: Make him an expert assassin/thief with flair. Like he wanted to be part of a brotherhood of heroes but a falling out made him disillusioned by the idea of nobility and honor when he stole an indestructible sword of mysterious origins, so now he kills and steals for crime bosses. Also make him very skilled, probably on par with Black Canary. Also instead of him being an enemy of Batman, he could be an enemy of the third Robin, Tim Drake. The original’s name is Mortimer Drake so he could be Tim’s uncle who tries to get him to follow in his footsteps of being a killer.
You know, after watching a bunch of your videos for like the tenth time (I honestly love your videos that much!) and revisiting this classic video, I gotta say that Cavalier is very underrated, I really like him and he actually has a bit of a following from what I've seen. I personally consider him to be a Underrated Rogue rather then a completely forgotten one :)
Hi Rogues I have some villains that would make great editions to your series. 1. Miracle Man (Joshua Ayers) 2. World Leader/Futoro X 3. Mr. Scarlet (hero actually) 4. Grey Gargoyle I love researching the old rogues, this series is awesome and I hope you continue it :)
The Cavalier is an interesting villain, in my opinion. I really like his first costume in his first appearance in the golden age of comics. It is a real shame he doesn't have that much attention in any Batman media ( well, Brave and the bold that is ). I wish he could appear more and be ranked as an A-list villain, who knows only time it's self would tell. He is still fantastic, in my opinion. Thank you for reviewing this forgotten Batman Rouge.
Anyone else watching this in preparation for his upcoming Arkham Session? Or maybe you just like Mr. Rogues’ videos. Both are great reasons to rewatch this video.
I remember reading a fairly recent Post-Crisis comic where the Cavalier reformed and was working in Leslie Thompkin's clinic as a helper/bodyguard. When two gang members from opposing gangs started their feud in the lobby, the Cavalier waved his fencing sword around to disarm their guns and told them (gently) no firearms or violence within the hospice. It was nice seeing a D-lister get his act together since I like seeing Batman make a difference.
Howard Chaykin wrote a Batman/Catwoman story with Cavalier as the villain? That... makes a lot of sense, actually. Two things you didn’t bring up: 1. Cavalier was briefly romantically involved with everyone’s favorite C-lister, Captain Stingaree. It didn’t really go anywhere, but it happened. 2. Hudson Pyle showed up during the Blackast Night event as a member of the Black Lantern Corps, since he was... y’know, dead and all. Anyway, what do I think of the Cavalier? I like him, but I feel like he isn’t hasn’t been fleshed out enough. I would mix Mortimer Drake and Hudson Pyle, kind of like what TAS did with Clayface. Mortimer Drake is a stuntman who grew up with a love for classic movies like Zorro and other pirate and swashbuckler type movie. He eventually decides to become the vigilante the Cavalier as a publicity stunt, but he enjoys it so he decides to do it full time. But he soon finds that he has a compulsion to steal, and he eventually fights Batman. He would continue to attempt to do good, but also commit heists. I would give him the classic Cavalier costume, as it looks great, and better than Pyle’s costume (also, is it just me, or does Pyle kind of look like Jack Sparrow?). Aside from that, the Cavalier is a fun villain, who really does feel like a golden age or silver age villain, which is a good thing. I feel that he is an underrated gem in the rogues gallery. Although maybe if you put him several centuries in the past as the archenemy of the Black Pirate (anyone remember that hero?) he’d got in better. At the same time, it’s how much he stands out in the modern day that gives him a lot of his charm and entertainment value. So, I guess you could go either way.
I like the premise behind the second Cavalier. A would-be hero corrupted by his wants and desire into becoming a pariah. I feel like they could have gone further with that one.
I actually own the last issue of the 1992 three part story Blades. It was a random comic issue I bought for cheap at a comic store when I was very young and didn’t realize most comics needed to be read through several issues and I wasn’t getting a full story in just that one single book. It’s sitting among many other single issue comics that I don’t have full collections of.
Honestly i always had a soft spot for this guy, the only story i have of him is the Hudson Pyle version in legends of the dark knight, and a cameo he had in knightfall.
I’ve been reading the newest Suicide Squad comic series and currently there are only 3 issues. And so you know the Cavalier has become a member of the Suicide Squad along with Deadshot,Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Magpie. Task Force X is also under new management, unfortunately I can’t remember Waller’s replacement name. If you haven’t read them you should quite enjoyable so far but I still prefer Ostrander’s and Glass’s New 52 series more. Great video Rogues.
"The Swashbuckling Rogue" Cavalier (DC Comics) is a perfect fit for the CWA (Centeral Wrestling Action) Universe, my caw wrestling program for the UA-cam channel that will be born in the Year of 2030. - As a 'Next Generation' figure in CWA History Don't you agree with me?
The Cavalier briefly reappeared in Batman Vol. 2: I am Suicide in just one panel. Spoiler (if you care about that) In just 3 pages, Batman and Catwoman beat up Magpie, Gorilla Boss, Werewolf, Signal Man, Ten Eyed Man, Copperhead, Amygdala, King Snake, Condiment King, Cavalier, Zebra Man, Film Freak, the Mad Monk, and Kite Man. All one panel each, so they were all taken out in single blows. Cavalier, Zebra Man, Film Freak, and the Mad Monk must have been working together because they all got beat up on the same rooftop, or at the very least somehow ended up on the same rooftop, but if they worked together you have to wonder what they were doing.
So Mr. Rogues i've been wondering this question and i know it's a strange one but if you were dropped into the DC Universe with the powers to travel among the panels of the comics kinda like Gwenpool what would you do besides meeting Two-Face and slaping Kite-Man For having a lame theme I would hug Mr. Freeze the poor guy and i would disrespect Darkseid
Ya know For the certain obscurity this guy has that makes him like a bad joke I can't help but think of how suitable he can be as a Batman foe with that certain go to Like u got one villain obsessed with *Riddles* U got another obsessed with *Alice in Wonderland* U got another obsessed with *Greek Mythology* U even got one's obsessed with *Kites* *Calendar Dates* *Polka-dots* *Signals* *The Nine Planets* Who says u can't complete that with a dude obsessed with *Shakespeare* and uses as a Go To for a villain gig
Cavalier Hon hon hon! Monsieur Batemane, I wish to duel you for ze honour of being Gosham's #1 embodiment of vigilance! Batman:... Cavalier: EN GARDE, BATEMANE! Batman:...I miss Joker. (Sorry about the fake accent, it's literally how I see him talk.)
I'm surprised the Cavalier never turned up in the 60s TV show he would have fitted in quite well.
Batman: [Somewhwere, Shakespeare is spinning in his grave.]

The hoarding problem and dangerous thrill seeking does make him out to be a very unhinged character when you look at it.
Believe it or not, Cavalier was once engaged in a closeted gay relationship with other swashbuckling Batman villain Captain Stingaree.

Cavalier showed up in the 2019 run of the Suicide Squad by Tom Taylor, as a member of the Squad. He was quickly killed.
I could honestly see this guy being reworked into a decent C or B list villain. A guy with a Hoarding addiction and an obsession with swashbuckling rogues becoming one to acquire the things he wants. Did you do that voice for Cavalier? that was awesome !
I like how the Cavalier was portrayed in Batman: The Brave And The Bold. He is an awesome villain. Hudson Pyle version is awesome too.
With a proper modernization, I think he could be a big shot, a romantic and theatrical foe is never too much.
I like the Cavalier concept among the Batman rouge.
I liked how Bats in Knightfall admits to himself he is so run down it took everything he had to take down the Cavalier.
It's really upset me this guy does not become batman's top villain. i mean,he have a gimmick and a proper background story to be batman arch-nemesis,still they don't mention this guy quite often

He’s joking obviously

I guess he may be. The line between forgotten and underrated is pretty blurry with many of these rogues.
I like to think Cavalier and Killer Moth are best friends and have been for years which is why they teamed up often.
I wonder how Firefly would react to that.. ;)
Gotham Rogues He could ally with firebug
Daniel Nesbitt
Firefly and Firebug are rivals, I don't think so.
Also, Cavalier (Mortimer Drake) was in a romatic relationship with Captain Stingaree.
Donte Morgan please tell me what comic this is...for research purposes of course
Weird Roblox player It Justice League of America #2 (November 2006)

I can’t read a story with him, without making him sound like J Peterman from Seinfeld
He was in batman the brave and the bold
He said that In the vid...
And most recently, DC Super Hero Girls
Yes he was. His most notable role was in the episode Bold Beginnings where he was Ruby Ryder's partner in crime.
Tim Curry would be a good voice for the Cavalier!
Yes he would. I’m surprised Greg Ellis is the only British actor who has voiced him.
Can you do the amygdala as the forgotten Batman villain

Fortunately, it seems that the Cavalier is reappearing in the new Batman show.
If you're talking about the guy withr the hat and black robes, that's the original Clayface. However hopefully cavalier does appear in season 2
good video
They named a Basketball team after this guy

I just saw this guy on dc superhero girls. He had a benders with Zatana. She didn't even remember who he was. It's a good show.
That episode of Super Hero Girls makes a lot more sense now...
I like the premise behind the second Cavalier. A would-be hero corrupted by his wants and desire into becoming a pariah. I feel like they could have gone further with that one.
"My eyes doth deceive me! Batman thrice?!"
X X A Bat divided!
He should be a green arrow villain
He worked with Leslie Thompkins in Batman: Battle for the Cowl
Well, Hudson Pyle appeared in Suicide Squad... for one issue... and then got brutally murdered
He can Make a Good Green Arrow,s Villain.
I really like this fella
2:08 Over on the left... what the heck does "dominoed" mean? Since when is that an adjective? x-D

Don't you agree with me?
Unfortunately he died on a suicide squad mission after being punched in the nose and having his head explode
the vigilante version of him also appeared in the batman adventures comics
The best villain
The cavalier is the most underrated villains
Why was the first video taken down
There were major glitches on youtube last night affecting monetization, thumbnails etc.. So I took it down and then reuploaded it today.
Ya if you read the Suicide Squad comics than he pops up again, but not for long when his face is punched out
Cavalier could work if they would go for the „V for Vendetta“-Way.
He was in Forever Evil : Arkham War !!
dc.wikia.com/wiki/Mortimer_Drake_(Prime_Earth)
f list characters love teaming with the killer moth... that's one less I learned while watching your videos
The Cavalier briefly reappeared in Batman Vol. 2: I am Suicide in just one panel.

Pointless use of these characters. It's just Tom King saying "Ooh look at how many obscure characters I know."
If I remember right I thought he was in a issue of the batman the animated series comics as a side story. I could be wrong
Wasn't there a "Cavalier'" who was a "Batman" of France? I do remember that "The Knight" was the "Batman" of England.
that was the Musketeer
So Mr. Rogues i've been wondering this question and i know it's a strange one but if you were dropped into the DC Universe with the powers to travel among the panels of the comics kinda like Gwenpool what would you do besides meeting Two-Face and slaping Kite-Man
For having a lame theme
I would hug Mr. Freeze the poor guy and i would disrespect Darkseid
Mr Rogues do a Jakolantern show he was kinda a poor man's green goblin that I feel didn't get enough push. If you already did my bads.
Ya know For the certain obscurity this guy has that makes him like a bad joke
I can't help but think of how suitable he can be as a Batman foe with that certain go to
Like u got one villain obsessed with *Riddles*
U got another obsessed with *Alice in Wonderland*
U got another obsessed with *Greek Mythology*
U even got one's obsessed with
*Kites*
*Calendar Dates*
*Polka-dots*
*Signals*
*The Nine Planets*
Who says u can't complete that with a dude obsessed with *Shakespeare* and uses as a Go To for a villain gig
welp now he's dead
Now in the Suicide squad so good for him
Didn’t this guy die and come back as a Black Lantern?
Cavalier Hon hon hon! Monsieur Batemane, I wish to duel you for ze honour of being Gosham's #1 embodiment of vigilance!
