Of all the videos of Soundgarden on UA-cam, this performance is my favorite 🤘🔥🤘🔥 CHRIS WAS EPIC ROCK GOD HERE. That audience should’ve been going wild. I’m loving all the details you’re helping me appreciate. And right when I was thinking this song sounds like a dragon of rock was being born - you throw in the part about Thayil’s little Pteradactyl screech sound 🤘😜
Thank you so much for taking on board my suggestion, I’m humbled! Glad you appreciated the mind blowing power and passion from this performance. By the way, for your convenience, the lyrics are as follows: Far beyond the road Between your house and home There is a churning storm Of hailing burning bones Tiny baby cries Little, tiny pawn In the profit gain Tiny baby grows Mother, who's your man Is he doing what he can To make a proper home, home By overturning other stones, stones Father, mighty man Loves his little boys, boys Shows them how to kill To save his precious stones, stones Far beyond the wheel Spin your life around By driving flesh and blood Deep into the ground, ground Far beyond the wheel Steers life around By driving flesh and blood, blood Deep into the ground, ground
I'm a bit late to this, but this was a great reaction. I liked that you actually broke down some of the things that were happening. No doubt this is one of the best Soundgarden performances on video! However, there is a better live version of Beyond the Wheel that is deep in the Super Deluxe version of their Superunknown album. Live at Exhibition Stadium, Toronto, CA 1993, you should be able to easily find it on UA-cam and Spotify. Chris' voice is even more immense on that version, you'll love it!
Even better in my opinion: this record store performance in 1989. ua-cam.com/video/ZBfnTdXP_Cs/v-deo.html He goes even higher at 28:11 than in any other performance I've heard.
Thanks for this. I'm a 50 year old guy who has been listening to everything Chris has done since 1990, and I've never heard this performance. Great analysis. 👍
same here... i am 51 and exactly that song was my startpoint listening grunge till now.... my kids often dont understand me, when i listen that music as loud as possible... ^^
@@seelenwinter6662 I've managed to turn my teens into big grunge fans. I love watching them discover a song that I've known about for 30 years. "Dad! Have you heard this song!" Haha!
I really enjoyed watching you break this performance down. The intro to this song where Thayil is hitting that open chord and sliding into that harmonic is tricky. It was cool that you picked up on that signature Kim feed back thing, that Soundgarden sound.
i got to this late but you're genuinely curious so I hope you see this. that 'soundgarden sound' is specific to Kim's Guild Polara. The stop-bar tail leaves 2-3" of string behind the bridge and he only uses the Guild Polara for this sound. It's a somewhat offset SG clone. also 'pitchiness' isn't inherent to grunge but harmonic dissonance is. this is one of the rare tracks where that dissonance doesn't really translate in this performance but that's likely because of the mix. probably the best example I can think of is 'Limo Wreck' as the chords shift Chris holds notes from one chord to the next.
I watched a Rick beato interview with Kim back when Chris was playing drums they were actually looking for a singer. They didn't know what they had in Chris. Lol unbelievable
@@TaylorJohnHardin Check out Beyond the Wheel BadMotorvision from their 1992 show at the Moore theatre. That performance is insane, even better than this one imo.

He’s hitting the chord then sliding his finger down the low strings with light contact, creating a harmonic without plucking again… giving it a gliding feel. You need your amp cranked.

This video blows me away! Chris is other-worldly here. Nobody can sing like this. He is F-ING AMAZING!
Matt sounds awesome here as well! The band is hitting on all cylinders!
Absolutely amazing! My favorite group and voice.... His voice has always great. His voice was very suited for this type of music. Musical Genius ❤

"Have a Happy Day" is Chris LOLOL He was dorky funny.
Matt is a GOAT for sure. He's one of my fav drummers no doubt.
Definitely several other better live performances of this although this one has high production quality.

Love your passion!!!!!!! More Layne please, he is God!!!!!! . . Chris is thunderous in this.
Not even the best live performance of this, he was suffering with a heavy cold on the night...Cornell stands head and shoulders above the rest
my god!! hahaha that explains the low notes. Im now on a hunt for the BEST!

Best vocalist ever!
saw them play this at bumbershoot (local seattle festival) in 1990 when I was about 13 years old. These guys were incredible

Another spectacular song on this album is the blues cover of smokestack lightning

I would love to get to crank my amp like that!
“Jesus is my friend” is his vocal warmup
Haha amazing
You can here it on other live performances from him, especially near the ends of sets and before challenging songs
Everyone overlooks the blues influence in this u can tell they were fans.
Totally!
That’s not a SG guitar. It’s a Guild.

Will do! Cant wait.
Two weeks after he lost his best friend and roommate, Andy.

Have a happy day, he was just trying to say: "Now go and have a normal working day german wageslaves."
Whatever, AIC (TRUE Chains, not that imitation thats around today) is untouchable, no one can match their (Laynes) greatness.
sounds like you got punked !
He's muting the lower D string so the 4th D can ring out. He slides slowly up so as to allow the bass D to slowly drown out.
It's crazy how many guitar techniques/playstyles there can be!
@@TaylorJohnHardin So true brother. 👍
