There's a bunch of live versions from early Soundgarden singing this song, some even more impressive, but many are audio only or doesn't have this video quality. Their shows were fire, and his voice even more unbelievable.
This was like a month after he had just lost his best friend and roomie, Andrew Wood; singer of Mother Love Bone. As you mentioned, the sadness/darkness about him is palpable. Certainly made for an intense performance
This is an early Soundgarden incarnation. They're working out what kind of band they want to be so played all their influences. This is Sabbath meets early Death Metal. Chris became more melodic with his voice and less screamy with time. Fucking great band.
@@MindRiotSolitude 😅 I'm getting a kicking for mis-gendering a genre. Of course it's not Death Metal but maybe just Metal? but it seems too dark to be Judas Priest. Put me straight.
@@petertrotman7708 Maybe just “heavy metal.” For a taste of death metal, look up bands like Necrophagist, Nile, and Decapitated. I think you’ll find that your initial description doesn’t quite hit the mark 😂
This is real visceral, I agree and it’s early on in the band’s career. The best voice in grunge IMO and the one with the best range, intensity, and emotion. RIP Chris.
Please do any of the Motorvision live videos. One of my favorites from that show is Mind Riot. They also did a Beatles cover of Come Together you might be interested in.
Sucks that I had to be 2 years old in 1990, I would have loved to see this show live and be able to remember it. If I had a time machine, I would go back at the current age that I am now and get a fake ID to get in there.
I know you are a big Beatles fan, so you should try chris cornell at the troubadour Jan 29 2010. He does ticket to ride with just an electric guitar and a looping pedal. Epic fan recording
Sometimes I just start singing 'Jesus is my friend' out loud. All bc of Chris Cornell 😂 I may have watched this performance too many times 🤣🤣 And those poor mic stands. They were always in trouble when Chris was around 😄
You should LISTEN TO "COLD BITCH" BY SG. It is an side B from BMF album. It's even higher than this one, Chris pipes were monumental. This gig in Germany was just a few weeks after the passing of Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone (at the time Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard band, PJ didn't existed). You are damn right about his sadness, he was grieving his friend and roomate Andy Wood. After this him and the whole Seattle scene started to take off!!
This performance is better. The recording may not be as good, but the vocals and his energy are even more insane here. So fire the videographer got distracted & vid veers away for a bit - ua-cam.com/video/Szht5RFy-LQ/v-deo.html (song starts :45 in). Worth a watch, even if you don't do a reaction.

Nobody can sing like Chris. Nobody!!!!
Saw them live in 2013 and they ended with this, my ears were still ringing next morning. So good.

Death metal? No
Wtf!? Death Metal? 🤨😆

What a gift. Thank you. And thank you Chris

This was right after his roommate/friend overdosed. Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone.
Exactly. His interpretation was spot on. Chris certainly sang from darkness here. The greatest. May they both RIP.
One of my favorite songs by them. This was right after Andrew Wood died, so the pain is real. At this tempo it has a real Doom Metal sound to it.

Shortly after his best friend Andy Wood died from a heroin overdose.

I love this song but on a side note, you're smokin' hot sir.

Good call mate… For me, that song is the very essence of grunge!
