This is an old ass video but just something for all those still watching this to consider: most if not all the stuff on Loopop's wishlist at the beginning, even a sort of glide, can be achieved with a Beatstep Pro. The big difference is that the BSP completely bypasses the internal sequencer for pitch and volume information. The BSP itself is tuned chromatically which means you can achieve pitch quantization by patching BSP pitch out to DFAM pitch in. The BSP CV outputs and its sequencer work REALLY well with the DFAM. You can send pitch, gate and velocity information from BOTH(!!) sequencers to practically any patch point on the DFAM. You can even patch the DFAM's internal velocity and pitch to any other point you want and sequentially modulate the chosen patch point if the BSP is feeding it velocity/pitch information.
Nice, I'd imagine 0xi One or Hapax could help out here in spades as well. 0-Ctrl as well (though it's not chromatic). But the cost point is the main one for me. BSP is flat out more affordable then a skiff + power supply + 4 or 5 modules if you don't want to get sucked in like that to eurorack :)
If I had to pick a single moment when I went from simple DFAM owner to developing a fascination with modular, it was this video, perhaps in late December. ‘Twas a tipping point. Now I’m making music just about daily; spending too much; learning a new, ever-changing instrument; and scratching my itch. In short: joy. Thanks, man!
Semi-modulars do a terrific job of introducing folks to synthesis and patching. Playing with friends, even a small number of modules like in this video, unlocks semis and launches them straight into outer space. Excellent job here! You should do a video like this with all the popular semis!
Brilliant! Been using these tips as jumping off points for continued exploration of the DFAM and they've taken me to places that I never thought the DFAM capable of.

The sequencer is active but the first step seems quite mute. At the same time, once i've change again the length of the sequencer (from three step to two or at four step) the first step don't run again, so seems that are only one or three step on. awesome video, thank you! one question please, I am getting the m32 and dfam as a starting point on my modular journey and was wondering about the rack, at first i thought the 2 tier would be nice, then I spotted the 3 tier, like you use here, which is great to add more modules, my question is , do you need an empty case to mount the modules in the third tier? many thanks
@@johnpalmermusic They have a 4 tier now as well, and uZeus is a great power option for that case (1 per case if you went 4 tier with say dfam, m32, and two empty skiff cases to fill with modular.
Love your videos, loopop. I have a DFAM and, sure enough, it is making me very curious about modular. Do you know whether the DFAM's Trigger Output can serve as a clock source for a Make Noise Rene? I feel like it should but the Rene manual says the clock input "width greater than 2.5 ms" while the DFAM manual says the trigger output is "roughly 1ms in width." Thank you!
Hi Matthew, I think it's possible to use an enveloppe generator to simulate a trigger-to-gate converter, A-140 from Doepfer can handle this. Anyway I think the Make Noise Rene will be fine with the DFAM clock
@@trapcodien Thanks. I went ahead and got a Rene, and if you (or anyone else who sees this) are interested, it works. The DFAM Trigger out serves as a clock source for a Make Noise Rene despite the width disparity. But that's not actually how I use it. Instead, I sampled the DFAM Trigger out with my Octatrack, and I send the sample out one of the Cue outs on the Octatrack to serve as a clock source for one Rene channel. This is cool because it allows me to do weird irregular clock patterns depending on where I place triggers on that track of the Octatrack. I can even do boutique swings using the retrigger and retrigger time functions on the Octatrack. Moreover, I can clock a second Rene channel with the other Cue out, either using a second Octatrack track or with the same Octatrack track depending on my parameter lock on the Balance setting on the Amp page of the track (since the clocks originate from the Cue left and right).
Wow great vid. I am new to synthesis and I have a dfam what other modules in your opinion should I start with. I love the way you coupled yours with the dfam. Did you convert an empty dfam case into a rack. I appreciate your help
Thanks! No I didn’t empty a DFAM, Moog sells these cases. Regarding where to start - with research and your needs :) don’t listen to recommendations from others
@@loopop I knew you was going to say that lol..but you are right I'm just bamboozled by the choices . I'm just beginning and it's just a new hobby at the mo. Having fun learning the jargon and How it all works
Bro thank you so much for always putting out the highest quality reviews and tutorials. Quick question.. is there another way other than eurorack to quantize the DFAM? Any semi-modular options that come to mind? Wondering if patching it to a Mother or to a Minibrute 2S could make this possible. Still new to semi-mod & modular
I'm not sure if the mother 32 or Minibrute would do that (possibly) but the korg sq1 is an inexpensive option that can send quantized pitches... A surprisingly powerful yet simple and intuitive sequencer which is affordable new and abundant and cheap second hand. Enjoy
Hi loopop! Your videos are extremely helpful and thanks for all of your hard work! I would appreciate it if you could please clarify one important point. In the back of the DFAM, there is an audio output. Are the modules being layered into the audio output of the Moog DFAM into your audio interface, or is the sound from the DFAM coming out of the VCA into the ES-8 and the sound ends up through the USB connector into the DAW? I am confused based on the cable set-up in that I do not see a separate audio mixer (i.e. ALM Tangle Quartet Eurorack module) where a 1/8in to 1/4in TRS cable converter is used. Thanks for your help!
Hey - I don't know which point in the video you're referring to, but the same audio comes out both the VCA output in the front and the line audio in the back (probably different levels)
@@loopop Hey loopop! Around the point where you show how to map the Disting Mk4 with the DFAM for quantization. So, I gather that the Disting is quantizing the output sound of the DFAM, and the final sound is being sent out from the back of the DFAM's audio output. Is that correct? Also, in this case, what is the purpose of the VCA output from the DFAM being inputted into the ES-8? Thanks for the clarification!
@@Tidewater500 I need a specific timeline to be sure, but DISTING doesn’t quantize audio, it quantizes control voltage. My guess is es 8 is just acting as an audio interface into a computer
@@loopop Awesome. Yes, it all makes sense now. The point of reference is 4:20. Earlier I was just confused where the final audio source would go after the control voltage was quantized. On different Eurorack rigs, some sound designers have an audio mixer module in which the instruments are outputted from their VCA ports into the mixer. This might be useful if trying to combine / layer the DFAM with a Subharmonicon and only have one output signal instead of two separate channels. After I get my Eurorack parts in the mail, I will try the appropriate configurations. I just wanted to make sure that I understood how the components operated before purchasing them and making unnecessary mistakes; however, as I have learned before, with systems like these, it is best to try them out directly instead of solely relying on a theoretical approach. Thank you for your help loopop! I will be more than happy to support your work with a donation. Keep up the good work with your reviews and instructional series!
Nice vid, do you have reccomendations for newbies who start out with the dfam as there first modular? I think the mother-32 is a good match, but what modules would you recommend to put in the limited space of the moog case, that would extend the mother 32 and the dfam? The Disting from expert sleepers? or maybe Maths from Makenoise? An amp to get output and headphones connected (Black Output from erica seems nice, but is very wide)?
h ag thanks! My top recommendation for first module is ES-8 from Expert Sleepers, if you’re open to the idea of trying out modules in software form - this will help you figure out exactly what modules you need. Please watch my Hybrid Modular video for more info. Maths is nice but will take up a lot of space. Try the modules in virtual form in VCVRack and then buy the ones you want in physical form. Makes sense?
Hey bud! I am really happy with your videos. Very informative and really helped me originally to understand synthesis and tricks with the Mother 32. I just purchased the DFAM though don’t have enough to get a eurorack yet. Any tips on how I can achieve this kinda parasonic sound with just the Mother32 and DFAM? I also have a subsequent 37. But I really don’t know how to hook it up the set up and perhaps have it trigger the DFAM and Mother32. Still learning
I think I understand the connection from Sub37 to M32. MIDI cable of MIDI out. I've never connected the DFAM to the M32. M32 has Assign, Gate, KB, or Assign OUTPUTS. DFAM has Tempo, Trigger or Clock IMPUTS. Sorry for the beginner question. Just trying not to fried the 2 Moogs. What would Imput / Outputs would you use to run the DFAM from M32.
loopop OK great! Thanks for getting back to me I’ll check these out. I’m fairly new to modular so I don’t want to start off with something too complicated. 👍🏽
Trovarsi - check out the Intellijel uScale II. It's pretty simple to use and has a secondary output which you can set to an interval. So you could, for example, bring the pitch out of DFAM into uScale II, send quantized pitch 1 (root) to VCO 1 IN, and quantized pitch + 7 semitones (fifth) to VCO 2 IN.
Started to freak out thinking I need a Disting (quantizing as demonstrated here) for my DFAMily but then I thought about the WM Eloquencer I have on the way...that should suffice for all my quantizing/sequencing needs, right?
*can I use the DFAM on the drum track of my beat step pro? I'm new to analog synths and have no idea what I'm doing. But that seems like a good idea. So on my beatstep pro I have a behringer 2600 on track 1, a Neutron on track 2 and a DFAM on the drum track*
Responder Music yes this one. By either modulating tempo or using an external sequencer. I know it’s not as good as having the feature on board but hopefully better than nothing
hi! thanks for the video I bought a dfam a while ago, and I like it a lot, but what is such a shame is that you can't skip steps easily i sync it with logic (via midi tot a doepfer msy2) and then patch it in the ADV/clock is there a way you can keep it in sync an only use for instance 5 steps (the technique you demonstrate doesn't allow to sync but only in stand alone mode...) almost criminal you can't skip steps (I'm into polyrhythms :) ) I hope you can help thanks so much nico
Does it really shorten the sequence by just speeding up the tempo in the audio rate? I mean I know it sounds like it but would it eventually get out of phase with a metronome?
Probably this is a very basic question but can you tell us how you fitted those modules to the Moog stand? How did you get the same wood panels and also how are the modules get power?
Sure - you can buy that case from Moog. It needs a power supply which moog doesn’t sell. I use uzeus from tip-top audio which is overkill for this case but can stay with you as you grow
I see it now. I missed it when I was looking at their website the other day. It's the Moog Eurorack Case. Cool. I get it now. The power comes from a power module in the rack. I think I am getting the modular virus from your videos.. I tried the DFAM in a store the other day and I can't stop thinking about it.
I know....that one caught me with my knickers down as well. Did not expect the pitch to eliminate steps. Been playing around with that technique all afternoon, and its bloody awesome.
There's noise, and external audio. But at LFO range VCO1 can still FM VCO2 while patched to something else, and if you switch Pitch to MOD VCO1 you can get some really interesting sounds.
So I’m going ahead with th mk4(for th explicit use u describe in vid)! I’ve also decided t get a few other modules, this will b my first real foray int’ full modular...if I may ask, can you recommend any reasonably priced powered cases? Please forgive my directness and naïveté. Thanks mate!

awesome video, thank you! one question please, I am getting the m32 and dfam as a starting point on my modular journey and was wondering about the rack, at first i thought the 2 tier would be nice, then I spotted the 3 tier, like you use here, which is great to add more modules, my question is , do you need an empty case to mount the modules in the third tier? many thanks
Thanks - yes, Moog sells this case - and you need to get a power supply separately
@@loopop thanks so much
@@johnpalmermusic They have a 4 tier now as well, and uZeus is a great power option for that case (1 per case if you went 4 tier with say dfam, m32, and two empty skiff cases to fill with modular.
Thanks! I’ve not tried sorry and my studio is undergoing a bit of renovation so they’re not accessible
Hey Hey! Do you have a vid showing how to hook Keystep(and setting pins) and Mother 32? Thank you
I made one with a simple trick in the past, but since they updated the firmware I've not covered it
Wow great vid.
What is the name of the quantizer you are using in this video ? Thank s !
Hey, Loopop! Can I ask a question, please? The trick with Pitch out - Tempo in (
Bro thank you so much for always putting out the highest quality reviews and tutorials.
Thanks for your comment! I haven't tried it but you should be able to send MIDI from Sub 37 -> Mother-32 and then clock DFAM from Mother
Great video! I love watching your videos. You explain things very clearly. Question, what other quantizers any would you recommend? Thanks!
SC _ Trovarsi thanks! Sorry I haven’t used any others than Disting and VCV quantizers. Tip-top Audio has a nice one
SC _ Trovarsi oh and ornament and crime of course
loopop OK great!
That is a sweet setup!
presumably if you're just speeding up the steps to "remove" them, the sequencer will quickly go out of time when clock to anything else?
*can I use the DFAM on the drum track of my beat step pro? I'm new to analog synths and have no idea what I'm doing. But that seems like a good idea. So on my beatstep pro I have a behringer 2600 on track 1, a Neutron on track 2 and a DFAM on the drum track*
Nice Video, i just got my DFAM yesterday. I miss a rest function
Responder Music thanks! - this video shows two ways to do that
Your video?
Responder Music yes this one. By either modulating tempo or using an external sequencer. I know it’s not as good as having the feature on board but hopefully better than nothing
I mean, Reset in sync to external clock. When i stop my external sequencer and start it again, the DFAM should start from the first step.
Fab demo lovin this would be great with my M32's but looking at your modular setup..... Ideas!
lol i just noticed you spelled loopop on the sequencer at the start
How are you liking that case with a mother, dfam, and modules? Was considering something like that.
It's a fun small case - obviously it doesn't scale much and needs power, but it doesn't take much space
@@loopop so how are you powering the eurorack modules?
uZeus from tip-top in this video
Sounds great! Is that your whole setup or just for this video? Very interesting what you can do with so few modules.
Juan A. Matos Thanks! I do have more stuff but in general I always prefer the smaller setups - and yes, you can do A LOT just with what’s here.
hi!
thanks for the video
I bought a dfam a while ago, and I like it a lot, but what is such a shame is that you can't skip steps easily
i sync it with logic (via midi tot a doepfer msy2) and then patch it in the ADV/clock
is there a way you can keep it in sync an only use for instance 5 steps (the technique you demonstrate doesn't allow to sync but only in stand alone mode...)
almost criminal you can't skip steps (I'm into polyrhythms :) )
I hope you can help
thanks so much
nico
How did you connect the seg with the dfam ?
What module can I use to reset the sequence? That would be really useful.
Does it really shorten the sequence by just speeding up the tempo in the audio rate? I mean I know it sounds like it but would it eventually get out of phase with a metronome?
What reverb are you playing the DFAM through in this video?
Clever!
I have noticed(or haven't seen it),
Seems like there's no way to sweep the cutoff on dfam unless you do it by hand. ??
There’s a vcf envelope on board and vcf input in the patch bay
Great work, man! Now I need to find money to spend.
Very cool
Can’t I just use the mother 32 lfo out to modulate the pitch of the oscillators on the dfam?
Elephant Kid yes you can
wtf! lmao how did cranking the pitch eliminate the steps?? i get the note being faster etc but huh? lol .,.,,and THANKS
I know....that one caught me with my knickers down as well. Did not expect the pitch to eliminate steps. Been playing around with that technique all afternoon, and its bloody awesome.
High pitch = high tempo
Where can I buy the Vari. F.O module ?
Check out voicas.audio/
Awesome!!!
I played a lot with lego, thats probably the reason!😉
DFAM has two potential LFOs. Each osc can go as slow as about one cycle per 4 seconds if I'm counting right.
but what will produce the sound instead? only one osc? meh
There's noise, and external audio.
But at LFO range VCO1 can still FM VCO2 while patched to something else, and if you switch Pitch to MOD VCO1 you can get some really interesting sounds.
Fantastic
Pardon mate, which disting?
MK4
@@loopop thanks mate!
Awesome but EXPENSIVE!
What's more? The moog grandmother...... It's awesome sounding & fun to patch but $900 !
Not that it would stop me buying a DFAM in the slightest, but it is a bit of a shame that sequences
All pitches adhere to the scale, yo! ;)
TL;DW: never forget to get your synth some friends :)
Please stop showing the SEQ... Damn temptation... 🤤
CloudSounds! Ok - next video no SEQ!
No no no! Do show Seq on all your videos! ;)
Piotr Raczyński don’t worry I only promised one ;)
The sibilance is deafening
So you’re saying I need to buy a Disting... ok.
Are those ‘your’ Legos, or were they supplied by the Lego company? 😆
