      1/2 mile would be hitting speed limiter in the Tesla Plaid. Try this again when the speed limit unlocked.
      There's nothing too fast here, it comes down to can you handle it and whether do you need it. If you think that this is too fast and dangerous, than this car is not suitable for you, pick the lower variant with less hp. In fact, most supercars have worse handling compared to Tesla in the unpredictable street.
      Suggestion: Consider add u turn and some slalom to the drag testing so we can see acceleration, braking, turning, and handling of each car. You can combine it, maybe like, start/finish -- 1/4 drag -- u turn -- some slalom with cone -- full acceleration to start/finish.

    Dan, I don't think 'it hit a wall' at 150. It's just that's its top speed is limited to ~160mph ATM. Tesla said they are going to release a software update to let it get to it's true top speed for 200mph. This thing will still walk a 720s up until 200mph

    In regards to the comment made about how the Plaid hasn’t changed much in terms of exterior looks (4:55) that’s arguable. It’s the most aerodynamic production car made and undoubtedly why Tesla didn’t change it much in terms of exterior design. You go with what works and obviously Tesla got it right. It ages very well and still looks very aesthetically pleasing and very modern even though it may seem a little understated against the competition. But looks can be deceiving and that just adds to the intrigue of this car in that in terms of performance it stands head and shoulders above anything else, including any super car, and gives it that special aura of stealthy invincibility. Not bad for a daily driver family sedan.

    I have a genuine fear that this speed is too accessible to the average driver and people will get into bad situations with this car. If you were to buy a 720S, you know that you are getting a crazy fast supercar and there is a natural acknowledgement/fear of the capabilities the car has as soon as you get behind the wheel. With this, it's a sedan that happens to be the fastest car in the world and looks totally approachable from a driving perspective. 120mph will sneak up very quickly just merging onto the freeway. I'd love if there was a mode to reduce the power significantly if desired, especially when allowing your kid to drive it. You should be required to take a high performance driving class when buying this, especially to understand how much longer braking distances are when you increase the speed every 10mph.

      Sport and Chill modes are available. I rented one about 2 months ago but didn't try those modes. I drove in Plaid mode which makes roughly 90% of the car's power available to you. Sport and Chill modes reduce power as well as throttle input.

    Right now, you can't go faster than 164 due to the software limit at that speed. You'll notice that at 2:24, your speed goes right up to 164 then stops. You actually got one more MPH out of it than the software limit. Eventually, 200+MPH will be available with a firmware update. Surprised you didn't know about this. :)

    • @rrolf71
      @rrolf71 2 роки тому +2

      I'm also wondering if the 1020 hp limit is really hard, or just conservative to protect the battery. The motors can deliver 1200 hp, and maybe this level will get unlocked once the engineers learn more about the power delivery system...

    • @floorpizza8074
      @floorpizza8074 2 роки тому +2

      @@rrolf71 I agree. Since the Plaid is the first Tesla to retain its performance numbers below 85% charge level, I'd be willing to bet that the battery can deliver more continuous energy that what the Plaid currently taps.
      I wouldn't be surprised to see Tesla sell a 200hp bump via firmware after they have enough reliability data on the drive train to justify it.
      Would probably be enough to see a 9.10 or maybe even a 9.0 1/4 mile.

    The new plaid looks painfully similar to the previous generation and I witnessed this in person yesterday. A grey plaid drove by me as I was driving back home and I literally thought it was a previous generation, however when I looked back at the rear of the plaid I see that it didn’t have the chrome strip on the back and had the blacked out strip instead, plus the rear lights was a bit brighter and more refined, and the overall rear just looked more dynamic. So I knew it was actually a plaid. But, I have learnt that the biggest secret to tell the difference would be the front fog lights. This might be the most major factor when telling the difference between the refresh and the old gen whether it’s daytime or nighttime. When it’s darker it’s much easier to tell when the fog lights is turned on. It no longer has that ugly tacky yellow hue in it. It’s all white now like on the model 3 and model Y.
    But, as much as the minimal design language change, I would still love to have the Plaid. Plus, to be honest I don’t ever think Tesla is going to completely “makeover” the model S, it was the icon and the start of everything for Tesla, that refresh back in 2016 might be the biggest redesign you’ll ever see. And I do think it’s a good idea to not rock the boat much on the more iconic models. I just honestly don’t feel like Tesla is a brand that always “changes the car” when a new generation comes out. That’s not their main focus. And now that more and more brands are coming out with their own EVs, they might not be spending all that time and energy on redesigning the cars as well. For some odd reason, a design change only sounds familiar with petrol cars. We are in a such different and innovative generation now, automakers might be shifting their focus completely to something new when making cars nowadays. I don’t imagine the Taycan will ever get a major design refresh as well. We will see.

I can't afford a Lambo or any car to compete with the Plaid, but I would much rather take a significantly slower car that engages me and provides the kind of feedback that has made the automotive industry such a great culture. Thanks for sharing.

    That is a fast car, no doubt. But I suspect that just like you say, it's too fast for it's own good or more than anything for the skill level of the driver. I see it a lot in the motorcycle world where a lot of bikes are just like that. I do agree with you on the exterior, as much as the model S is aging much better than the other models, it's time for a redesign. Great video Dan, absolutely nailed the intro and the transition to your garage at the end was pretty neat.

    • @ronin7645
      @ronin7645 2 роки тому +1

      I don't think it's time for a redesign. It's a really good looking car. The exterior has changed since 2012, albeit small changes. The front bumper today is no where near what it looked like in 2012. They flared the fenders out as well for this years model. The 911 has looked basically the same for 50 years. The bmw 3 series and 5 series did as well. VW bug? The Lexus es 300 stayed basically the same for over a decade.
      He says in the video that the model s looks the same as all the other model s's out there. Duh, so does any honda accords. Or mercedes, or any other car. If you buy a model of any car, yes, it looks the same as the model someone else buys.
      I saw a new model s a couple of weeks ago and it in no way looked ordinary next to the cars by it. In fact, it stood out to me and is why it caught my attention. It's also much much wider than I expected. I would bet it has a wider back end stance than 95% of anything in it's class. If not more. It's that wide! I will say that car had a stealth satin gray wrap with black wheels so that may have enhanced the look a bit. But even if it did, I was blown away of how beautiful that car was.
      Boring looking? Not a freakin chance in hell in my book.

      @Francois Boisvert Thanks Francois. We were really debating this the other day, because it becomes an ethical problem here. It is very much like a motorcycle where it’s a lot of power for very little money. In terms of cars, 140K is still quite a reach for many people, but it’s not as unattainable as a 720S or something of that caliber. Plus the Tesla is more practical so it’s justifiable for some to spend that money. So really, it’s plausible to be purchased by anyone who can get the financing. Ultimately what I’m saying is, the Plaid is democratizing a level of performance that is just unsafe for people on the road, especially people who just don’t have the experience to get behind the wheel of something with so much power (i.e. teenagers, certain housewives, guys who just want to flex).

That sort of performance was only kept for AMG's, McLaren's, Ferrari's in years gone by. Has anyone taken the electric power system out and made a real drag race car out of it ?

    I see he going for clicks.. hooligan just raced a plaid against a McLaren and the plaid had no problem stopping but the Mclaren did and the had 3 or four people in the car. I seen the plaid ma out and almost max out in a quarter mile it doesn't need a half mile. Not picking and doing more research won't keep you viewers. When there other review keep it real. You should know the info on the car you're testing.

    PLAID comes from the Movie Spaceballs where it is fastest version of travel, faster than lightspeed, ludicrous speed and insane speed.......it's PLAID speed!!!

    It doesn’t hit a wall at 150, it is speed limited currently. Full disclosure would be nice. It’ll be released soon. You’re obviously a Tesla hater since it gaps everything you drive or own.

    Plaid is halfassed. Elon put all his effort in the motors, and forgot about anything else. Like proper brakes. Or a steering wheel.

    Plenty modded cars with only 700bhp go faster in 1/2 mile

    Kind of a wanker video... too fast - come on. They ran it on the Ring.
    And yeah - they keep it the same because it is their classic style. Don't like then you can just watch it walk past whatever you are in.
    Really a swing and a miss with your comments.
