    Tesla says the Model S Plaid is the quickest accelerating car in production today, and they claim the Model S Plaid+ has the quickest 0-60 mph and 1/4 mile acceleration of any production car ever. The Plaid has a 0-60 mph of 1.99 seconds, and the Plaid+ has a 0-60 of less than 1.99 seconds, if you believe the order page. Unfortunately, these numbers are deceiving, and the real zero to sixty is likely above two seconds. No, Tesla's Model S Plaid won't hit 60 mph in under 2 seconds. In this video we'll discuss rollout, Tesla's actual 0-60 time, 0-60 theory, and what today's theoretical limit on 0-60 mph is. Watch to learn more!

    It kind of surprises me to see that the P100D almost accelerates as fast as it full emergency brakes. That really puts things into perspective. Flooring the accelerator has a similar effect to smashing the brakes!

    Nope, you cannot compare braking distance to acceleration. Braking uses ABS which actually extends the stopping distance due to the ABS nature - it quickly locks wheels and releases them , what ultimately changes the friction. Whenever it moves from static to dynamic friction, the grip changes (dynamic is, I think always, worse).
    If you were to brake without ABS at the limit of grip, that is using all braking force without allowing the wheels to slip - then it would be one, long smooth process. Otherwise it has multiple interruptions, which is not the case during acceleration.

    Front engine corvettes always had very low stopping distances because of engine location, the opposite would be true for acceleration. Mid and rear engine cars have more weight on their rear tires for acceleration but less on front tires for breaking. So that theory may not work for all production cars.

    Is it really that deceptive by Tesla explicitly though, if they're using the same standard of measurement as everyone else in the industry have done for ages? It may not be technically correct, but if the method of measurement is equal then the playing field is too, then the _comparison of _*_relative_*_ results versus other cars and models_ is still producing accurate, non-deceptive results.
    Current doesn't actually flow from positive to negative, but as long as standards are established and adhered to equally in every area where this technical incorrect element doesn't make a notable practical difference, then we don't tend to call out industries or individual companies for being deceptive in their componentry data sheets and schematics (and by extent almost every data sheet and schematic in the world, from every manufacturer under the sun).

    • @ThorsteinKlingenberg
      @ThorsteinKlingenberg 3 роки тому +1

      That's the problem, it isn't equal. Tesla is, to my knowledge, the only car maker that states 0-60 or 0-100 times with the first foot substracted. Because every other manufacturer knows you can't put zero to something without measuring from, you know, zero.

  • @PaladinofRealm
    @PaladinofRealm 3 роки тому

    I'm sure the assumption for the breaking isn't quite right.
    Here's why: The car starts the breaking with the engines which aren't as strong in breaking, secondly electric cars can be a bit different in the aspect that the brakes aren't as strong in relation to the weight of non electric cars.
    Therefore I don't think the Tesla can do under 2 seconds, but your reasoning does seem to be flawed.

  • @jasonjarosz5897
    @jasonjarosz5897 3 роки тому

    The Plaid and Plaid+ have more powerful motors that can also apply even more braking force than is available in the P100D. So, at least at the wheels, the Plaid and Plaid+ should be able to apply more braking force than any other production vehicle. The real limiting factor is the amount of traction available between the tires and the pavement. The GT2RS is able to stop in absurdly short distances not only because of its massive brakes but also because it's incredibly lightweight and also because it has a *ton* of aerodynamic enhancements that create downforce. While the P100D will be able to apply more braking force to the wheels, it'll be carrying much more weight with less aero than the GT2RS.
    The only way I can see Tesla accomplishing these claimed numbers is with *very* wide tires and extensive weight savings in the upper 75% of the vehicle. If they can get the center of gravity at or below the height of the axles, then accelerating or braking would actually press the car into the road and create downforce/grip.

    They know it is deceptive... but all the automotive magazines do it, all the manufacturers do it, there really isn't any way to accurately measure when it moved from zero... just like cam duration advertised vs .020 lift on a cam. No one can accurately determine the instant it goes from 0.000000 lift but it is relatively easy to measure from .020 because it's moving.

    **UPDATE** Now that MotorTrend has tested, here's an updated video on the subject! ua-cam.com/video/HAmv2IO9row/v-deo.html The new video will not address much of the how/why, as this video does, so both will remain up as they explain different aspects.
    **CLARIFICATION!** Two major points, as there is some confusion:
    1) Drag strips don't measure 0-60 mph. They do time the first 60 ft. When I reference "when the clock starts" (after the tire has moved 1 foot, once the stage beam reconnects), I'm referring to when the clock starts for auto magazines. They delete this first foot in their 0-60 times (though this is done with GPS, rather than stage beams at a drag strip).
    2) Many people asking about why you can't accelerate faster than you can brake. This is assuming you have a car with modern brakes and properly serviced, well maintained brakes. Pretty much all modern cars can lock up the brakes, that's why we have ABS (anti-lock braking system). The job of ABS is to keep you as close to peak braking deceleration as possible (maintain a high static friction, so the tire does not lock up and slide). This allows the car to stop as fast as possible, and this also informs you what your average grip is during an emergency stop. Grip is ultimately the limiting factor for acceleration in very powerful cars (like a Tesla Model S Performance). If you know what your peak grip is, you can assume you will accelerate at that peak grip, so long as you have enough power to do so. You cannot accelerate faster than your grip allows! (Unless you use rockets, as the video states). That's why I find it fair to use braking as a way of predicting theoretical acceleration, with the disclaimers discussed in the video (discussion labeled "Why Trust Me" on the whiteboard).
    *Edit:* 3) If it wasn't abundantly clear, this video is talking about road legal tires on a flat surface, not drag tires (which aren't road legal) on a prepped surface (sticky drag strip). When car companies quote 0-60 times, unless otherwise stated, it is the former (road legal tires, road surface) they are quoting, not the latter (drag tires, drag strip). Obviously you can improve 0-60 times of traction limited cars with drag tires, hence top fuel cars are hitting 0-60 in well, well under 2 seconds (under 1 second!).

    • @Wydarr
      @Wydarr 3 роки тому +22

      Jason, pardon me, but a road legal car can definitely brake higher than 1.1g.
      In the latest Nordschleife record run, the new 992 GT3 brakes at 1.4 - 1.8 g (e.g. right before Aremberg).
      As far as I can tell (and anybody that's regularly tracking cars can confirm) there's a huge difference in the grip level between the cold tyre and the properly warmed one, and I have yet to see a 0-60 time that details the tyre temperature and pressure...
      Just sayin'

      I don't know whether they're legally allowed to, but there is also a chance of them measuring the acceleration on a drag strip like surface, where the ground is coated in rubber and has a higher friction coefficient. That might skew their results higher than a car magazine or other reviewer where they might measure it on regular asphalt.

And since 100 kmh is 62 mph, it makes sense it's a slightly longer time. So actually 0-100 kmh will likely be around 2.3-2.4 seconds.

Time goes by and he becomes a high school teacher. You know what they have to do quite frequently? Yep, write on the whiteboard... His writing skills are still not something you appreciate for it's beauty, but it is 100% readable. Only took him a few years of training to achieve...

I don't know that it has anything to do with this but he is also one of very few people who are even worse than me at drawing and sketching, and I'm pretty freaking bad at that. I also are one of the last to criticize any ones hand writing as mine is pretty bad, but it is easily readable. On the other hand everyone I know who has some artistic talent seem to write a very even and flowing script, though some of the really gifted tend to embellish letters to the degree that it becomes more art and less readable.

Their only takeaway is that they should merge at the far end of the lane and somehow forget that a successful zipper merge requires not only that both lanes are moving at the same speed, but also that you merge behind the car in front of you.

    Tesla just did it. World record time at a certified drag strip with a speed faster than a Bugatti Chiron with 1.99 sec 0-60. Yes that was with the roll out. Yes, that is how every other car is measured 0-60. Apples to apples please.
    But just to consider what you impressively explained, using mostly cars with a single axle being driven, and in the Porsche braking comparison. Do the math once again as Tesla probably did, using four wide tires for its four wheel acceleration/deceleration curves not just for two wide and two not so wide. Sizing them for the task on a car weight v tire contact area equivalency with the Porsche might just get the acceleration to fit the formula. I may be wrong but did you factor in the weight transfer effect in braking back to front wheels v acceleration front to back wheels that that Porsche was fighting in its deceleration G forces?
    Four wide wheels, three big electric motors, superbly traction control engaged throughout the acceleration, instead of just at the instant of start that you use for the roll-out calculations. Are not all of the ICE cars in the comparison slowing for a shift before reaching 60?
    The telling characteristic in the Tesla1/4 mile, Famoso Raceway record against the Bugatti Chiron's 1/4 mile record time was the top speed lower than the Bugatti. Obviously more acceleration G's were encountered in the Tesla earlier in the curve where the Bugatti had better acceleration later.
