What Makes A Great Engine? The Honda S2000 & Its Legendary F20C

  • This week I'm looking at three cars known for their engines. We start with the smallest and least powerful - but in many ways the most impressive. Honda's S2000 launched in 1999 and 20 years later the bonkers F20C at the heart of the car still sets car guys imaginations on fire. I ponder why that might be.

I'm having to sell my S2000 very reluctantly to fund a property purchase. Boy will I miss it. Not only a superb engine, but everything about this car excels; the handling, the looks, the seats, the roof mechanism, it all comes together in a truly special machine. Not surprised these cars are going up in value, they are true classics. The person who buys mine is truly blessed. Long live the remaining S2000's.

I have had one of these for a few years and I love it....great sound, great gear box and engaging drive as you have to work the engine and keep it over 6k if you want decent power. I always thought whatever about the engine, the S2000 gearbox is incredible, so smooth and so precise it's just perfect. I had my S2000 over 4 years, the longest I owned a car. Had it modded nicely with J's Racing bonnet, Volks Racing CE28N wheels, Mugen hardtop and loads more. The sound of the Powerhouse Amuse exhaust when going through a tunnel was superb. Great choice of car James. One of my favourite videos of an AP1 S2000 is called 'Tuned AP1 Honda S2000 Road Impression' uploaded by 'The Slip Angle' youtube channel. Its a 29 minute video of Quinn hooning his tastefully modified AP1 through tight-and-twisty roads whilst he tells his ownership story of the car with extensive knowledge about the engine, drivetrain, chassis and brakes. At the 19:43 mark, he talks about how the F20c is more superior than the newer K20a engines regarding its cam gears, internals and low friction roller rocker design.

The thing about the engine is that you can smash on it all day and have loads of fun. But, no, it’s not a “fast” car. When you are driving a 500+ hp Porsche turbo you can only use half the car’s capabilities in most situations. Even on a track most people can’t handle a car like that.

    Top engines:
    1. A Ferrari 12-cylinder, especially in an old 60’s example
    2. A GM small block 5.7 liter -> 6.2 liter. Extremely flexible. Horsepower can range fro, modest to extreme. Mileage is pretty good. Packaging is amazing (fits in everything from a MX-5 to a Jaguar XJ to a Corvette)
    3. The Voodoo engine in the Mustang GT350 /GT350R
    4. The 3.0L BMW straight six. Smooth, fairly good mileage, bulletproof
    5. The 3.2L Type II from the Acura / Honda Legend. 230hp in 1992 with a 7,000 redline and with titanium parts, could spin-up over 8,000 (as seen in the NSX).

I've had mine since 2012. In 2018, my wife and I bought a new Outback, and then we were short on garage space. So rather than sell the s2000, I built a new extra garage. It now sits in there, waiting for warm weather. The thing about it is this: I look at it and think "you know, if I didn't have it, I could put something else in that space". So I start thinking about selling it. Then I take it out on a drive. And on every drive, there is a point where I come out of 3rd gear at 8000 rpm or so, into 4th, and I think "I am never selling this car." It's been like that for about 5 years now.

I wish Honda would keep making F2Xs engines. Honda absolutely nailed all the categories with this engine: performance, reliability, and cost. They still maintain their reliability under boost and/or during track conditions. Unfortunately, this block doesn't take well to being rebuilt. So when they're gone, that's it.
There ARE enough of us out there that have a very strong desire to keep their S2000 forever, whether they serve as a daily driver or track car. Almost everyone who owns or has owned an S2000 experiences the inevitable "pride of ownership". It is a special car. I have almost 90,000 miles on mine, but I'm already dreading the day when my engine gives up the ghost because there probably won't be clean-low mileage engines available for a swap.

I definitely get the appeal, drove an AP1 on an weekend road trip and that 9000 RPM redline is glorious. Made me start shopping used S2000s.
However I must say that I feel like the SC Toyota engine in the Elise is almost as special (8000 RPM with the supercharger whine is still ballistic and sounds fantastic) and frankly I felt like the S2000 was just a tad too slow for my tastes and the overall appeal of mid-engine configuration and rarity of the Elise won me over so I decided Elise.

I disagree a bit about 'tech specs not being important at all' point. A lot of people seem to not care so much about hp per litre but for countries like Japan that have engine displacement tax, or countries that have high insurance quotes because of engine displacement, it makes sense to have good hp per litre. It also shows how efficient it is at making power (not talking about fuel consumption of course). I love the S65B40 from the M3 E9x - its 15kg lighter with its aluminium block than the predecessor S54 (which was already an amazing engine) and sounds sensational as revs over 8250rpm (like the 4.2FSI V8 from the R8 and RS models and the Voodoo V8 from the GT350). I think that any engine that revs to 9000rpm reliably (like the 991.2 GT3) automatically deserves to be called a great engine too. I think Rotary engines are great because they feel smooth when you rev them out unlike most piston engines and they use less moving parts too. I do think that an engine that can be robust over a few decades of abuse (e.g. F20c and 2JZ) deserve a mention too.

    • @joetaka7620
