So sorry to hear y’all are having boat problems. The right answer will come, God won’t bring you to it without bringing you thru it. I know it is hard to have faith at times when it seems to be going so bad. Prayers for y’all. Can’t wait to see what future holds, know it will be great‼️🦀🦐🐠🌝🍤🚤🇺🇸
Well -- Glad to see you finally understand the benefits of useing a TRAWL Winch with further developments and improvement you will be able to call it a Mini Trawler. Well done so far n respect for never giving up. 🤜🤛
Thanks, man. It's hard starting out with nothing, but with dedication, nothing is impossible. We've learned a lot from our mistakes. This is my buddies boat, not mine.
I'm not one to criticize, so please think of this as a suggestion. At about an hour into the video and watching Billy drag that shrimp bag on the starboard side of the boat and watching that door swing too close to his head and body in those rocky seas. Wouldn't be safer to shorten the port door cable and grab the bag from the port side board and then maneuver the boat so the bag comes in on the starboard side so the use of the winch still works to your advantage.
No harm done. We appreciate your suggestions. I don't like the door swinging so close to us. It would be easy to let the door hang a little lower so the door isn't swinging as much, but the door would do damage to the boat. I wouldn't want to trawl using this boat in any rougher conditions than this day.
Y’all got a great setup on that trawl boat. Thirty years ago I would pull a 50’ trawl by hand “sport trawling” in a 17’ fantail boat. I gave up trawling when here in Louisiana they made trawlers use a huge metal “turtle excluder device”. In about twenty years of sport trawling I never once caught a turtle in my nets.
@@flintmcrock636 Unfortunately we have caught a couple of turtles in our trawl, but we were able to set them free alive. We have to use the TED in our net if we're using any kind of winches or mechanical devices that helps with the trawl net
You need to let your bib line out some ; your door runnner not riding flat on the bottom letting the shrimp go under the led line !look at the shin on the runner !
I hear that there used to be lots of guys that trawled with small boats like we're doing. These days, there are only a few around our area still doing it. What happened? What made you quit?
@@SaltyReflections We did it about 3 or 4 years and then he sold his boat. So we just got out of it. We would shrimp like 2 or 4 hours and then we came to my shop and de-head the rest of the night and part of the day.
@@SaltyReflections We didn't trawl we put in poles and threw a net. But enjoyed it very much. I can't now due to my wife isn't doing to well but I would love to go out on the trawl with you.
@@randyleasure8763 We've spent many days bait shrimping. We got into trawling about 5 years ago and haven't been back bait shrimping. Shrimping ain't easy no matter how you do it.
It’s should be 16 inches in front of the bottom line so when it jumps the shrimp 🦐 up they go in the net not under it and net goes over then 🎉. If you take some of the floors off what you call three line ,and let it out2 feet longer than you have it ,your door runner should shine all way will make your net shrimp seven 🦶 more than it is !
Not ‘testing/sampling’ the area you are trawling is a big gamble and relying on luck will not be financially feasible overall! Could be an expensive gamble…🤔🤔Retired w/35+ years as commercial Louisiana shrimper. PS: Possibly too much floatation on bib-line and/or bib-line too tight (could let out 145’ on both pulling cables to lessen pressure on bib therefore boards ‘may’ stop hitting nose and have more wear on middle of boards; OR let out the top/float line 8””-10” EACH SIDE!?!? Bid-line/bridle-line/third-line will MAKE MONEY OR COST MONEY if not set properly!!!! Seriously… 48’ net w/5’ boards… spinning your wheels PLUS$$ larger fuel expen$e! ANOTHER TIP: because not testing=noticeably more live shrimp indicates ‘just caught/just getting’ into the shrimp!!!!
Thanks for all the info. I've never seen anyone use a try net on a boat as small as we're using. It's definitely a gamble pulling without one. Someone else was also telling us that it looks like our center line needs to be a little longer. We'll keep making adjustments.
Hi, Oliver Hey, I hate to see that by catch. Seems like he kills so much. But when you have that, why don't you save that for the crabbers? For bait? Instead of just tossing it over. Maybe there's a reason you don't, but just seems like you can make an extra few bucks by selling it to the crabbers for their crab traps.
We hate seeing the by-catch in our catch too. The number one reason we don't keep a lot of it is because we are limited on space and ice on the small boats we use for trawling. We do keep some of it to crab with ourselves.
I just wish someone would invent a project that was separate the unwanted catch from the shrimp like they do turtles doors seems like it's such a waste
Nets have different mesh sizes & the fish eye (BRD - bycatch reduction device), which helps reduce some of the bycatch, but unfortunately, it doesn't keep it all out. We wish it did. It would make shrimping a lot easier not to have to sort out so much. The TEDs do help keep out any turtles, of course, but also other large sea creatures, like rays & sharks, which is a big help!
SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR BOAT . YOU WILL GET BACK TO SHRIMPEN THIS YEAR. WAS OFF LINE LAST NIGHT HAD TO GET BACK ON YOU TUBE FACE BOOK AND CLIP CHAMP TO RECORD VIDS BUT EVERYTHING IS BACK TO NORMAL. SAY HELLO TO PHIL NICE TO MEET YOU . I LIKE PHIL LIKE YOUR BOAT .
I hope Philip is reading the comments, but I doubt it. lol. I'm thinking his boat set up is pretty dang good compared to others I've seen. With some adjustments, we should be able to make some good pulls this year. Our shrimp trawl boundaries change this Tuesday, and we'll be able to pull closer to the beaches where we're used to pulling. If the shrimp are there, we should do good this coming week.
36-40 for frying an 16-20 for the grill we call em corn cob shrimp size i think taste the same smaller just little less chewy IMO but i take 36-40 all day i love grenntails an Brown shrimp to but white shrimp AKA green tails have a sweeter taste spotted shrip taste good also but we don't catch enough to have a market anymore
We eat a lot of small shrimp and sell the bigger ones. I'm good with that. I shrimp because I love doing it. The money we make selling them is not much for our efforts.
Shame how u killed or let die were the other 80% of other seafood. And we wonder why the seafood industry has went to shit, and the prices have quadrupled!!!
Unfortunately, bycatch is a part of the wild caught seafood industry. We keep as much for bait as we can use, but the rest goes back to the sea & becomes food for the other wildlife (birds, dolphin & sharks) that are eagerly waiting on it to be tossed back.
@@chuckhartey9349 Wow. That's a lot more than what we've been selling them for. That's good for you man. They're worth every penny you can sell them for.

Being on the water definitely helps me mentally. I've loved being near or around the water since I was a kid. There's not much that I'd rather be doing. Lots of my buddies love it, too.
We've been lucky that our friends and others have helped us by buying most of the shrimp we've caught. We don't catch enough to sell them for $1 a pound. On our best days of shrimping, we might catch 400 lbs heads on. And there's plenty of days when we catch less than 100 lbs. I've spent more money trying to catch shrimp than the money we've sold them for.
Nice to see y'all back on the water.
We had a great time and ended up with a good haul. Thanks for coming along.
