So in a way, The Great Mouse Detective is the reason why The Disney Renesence happened. So the great mouse detective is the father of the Disney Renesence. And savior
Oliver and Company and Who Framed Roger Rabbit also helped Disney to be on its feet
yep
Though I do think that does make it kind of fall through the cracks. It's not really part of the Disney dark age nor part of the Disney renaissance.
Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a huge reason the Renaissance happened, but I see it more as a precursor to said Renaissance rather than part of it.

Fun facts:
-This was the first animated movie directed by Disney legends John Musker and Ron Clements, the duo behind classics like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog and Moana.
-While it did well at the box office, The Great Mouse Detective was outgrossed by another mouse movie, An American Tail, directed by Don Bluth and released four months later.
-Vincent Price also voiced another animated villain, Zig Zag from The Thief and the Cobbler.
-Veteran voice actor, Candy Candido, was the voice of Fidget.
Brenda Rivas Didn’t they also do Bolt too?
Another Fun fact: Mr Flaversham is voiced by Alan Young the same voice actor who voiced Scrooge Mcduck.
@@powerpup97 No, they didn't. Bolt was directed by Byron Howard and Chris Williams
Vincent Price also voiced January Q. Irontail in "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" and Vincent Van Ghoul in "The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo".
@@maldon3659 And it's funny because Duck Tales came out one year after The Great Mouse Detective
As a Sherlockian I've always put this as my favourite Disney film, a most excellent hommage and I've particularly enjoyed Vincent Price in the roll of Professor Ratagen.
You just scared the crap out of me with that intro
You’re not the only one, mate. You and me are in the same boat.
I honestly laughed every time it got used.

Disney fans and people in general need and should realize that without "The Great Mouse Detective", there would basically be no "The Little Mermaid", "The Lion King", "Frozen" and any other popular Disney movie.
I also feel like this is or was one of the last Disney movies where they actually took risks. Such as kidnappings, Ratigan smoking a cigarette stick, The bar scene, Graphic fights, The burlesque performance in the bar by Lady Mouse, Adult themes, etc. etc. .
This is such an underrated movie and I think it's one of Disney's best
agreed
It's easily top three for me
me too

@@yoboibeerus1387 Well, yes, but underrated as the fact that no one really talks about this movie today
The fact Vincent Price played Ratigan helps make me appreciate his over the top performance. Nice videi
awesome! I agree, Ratigan is criminally underrated! When one such as Vincent delivers the line "I love it when I'm nasty!" that oozes horrendous glee, you know he's having a total blast and that you've got the perfect guy for the part!
Price has said Ratigan was one of his favorite roles. You can tell he was having so much fun voicing him.
@@L1701 Absolutely!
@@celticpoet21 i’m sorry, but this extra rat is one of the most delightful creations to ever come out of the studio. And honestly, this might actually be my favorite film from the studio. Did it just how fun it is, I can literally never get enough of this film
Definitely my favorite Disney movie, and almost totally forgotten by its own studio.
You forgot to mention Henry Mancini's incredible score for the film. Very underrated music IMO. I think it should've gotten an Oscar nomination for the Big Ben fight alone.
agreed
I love the light horror in this movie. And hey, as long as it has a happy ending you can show a kid just about anything!
That was Don Bluth's philosophy.
Name one reason to watch The Great Mouse Detective.
Vincent Price as Professor Ratigan!

Luigi Marinus Vlogs Yes but I choose that time to sum it up in a nutshell.
Luigi Marinus Vlogs Ohh.
If any Disney movie deserved a spin-off series it was this one.
I mean, even Chip n' Dale got their series. Why not the great mouse detective? It would have been a super cool detective series for children. I would have been so here for it.
The Great Mouse Detective definitely should be given 10/10
This is a nice and wholesome little movie. Sure, there are a couple of extreme closeup jump-scare shots of Fidget’s horrid, bloodthirsty, ugly, disgusting looking face, but it’s still a great movie, nevertheless. Plus, Vincent Price did an excellent job at voicing Ratigan. That, and Zig Zag from the Thief and the Cobbler.
Overall, this is miles better than Sherlock Gnomes. (No disrespect to those who enjoy Sherlock Gnomes)
As much as I loved the original Great Mouse Detective film, I would definitely love to see a sequel! I mean seriously out of all the Disney sequels we got with The Rescuers Down Under, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and the upcoming Frozen 2 or even sequels to Marvel films, Star Wars, or even live action remakes they didn't even greenlit or make a sequel to The Great Mouse Detective?!
The film's ending did show where Dawson is now serving Basil's assistant to solve cases and the sequel would've gone many adventures and mysteries for both Basil and Dawson to solve. If it wasn't for the Great Mouse Detective, Disney would have shut down their animation division and the Disney Renassisance would have never existed and we would've gotten so many beloved Disney animated films like The Little Mermaid, The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Emperor's New Groove, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, Zootopia, Moana and so many more. The Great Mouse Detective save Disney from all of their troubles!
That's a sequel everyone ask for and a sequel we really wanted to see.
I feel like it would have been perfect for a Disney afternoon series
This is like the most underrated Disney movie
Vincent Price is just simply perfect in this
No one will ever match him.
Ratigan is the saltiest Ex ever
Watson does show personality on his own.
his banter with his friend Sherlock Holmes is always entertaining to listen to or to read.
He’s also a war veteran and a Victorian playboy
Ratigan is my favorite cause hes the villain he doesn't hide it he enjoys being evil and snarky i just love it
This is definitely one of my favorite Disney movies. Everything you said here is spot-on to what I think of the film, especially with the characters. They in particular are so enjoyable for me! Ratigan stands out the most for me thanks to Vincent Price's entertaining and infectious demeanor, but Basil and the rest are definitely notable as well. Great review, Animat! :)
Such a great and underrated film. Definitely one of my favourites. Thank you AniMat for doing this review.
As a 90s kid, I am so glad I grew up with this film.
Underrated Disney classic, I remember my mom found it a bit dark and scary, I loved it
I loved this movie as a kid, and I really ought to see it again soon. I think the last time I watched it was a few years ago on my family's old VCR (yes it was still working at the time). Ratigan's songs and The Big Ben climax have always been the biggest highlights for me. It's also awesome that you got to meet the directors John Musker and Ron Clements, especially for signing that amazing animation cell of Ratigan.
AniMat I am HIGHLY grateful that you reviewed my favorite Disney movie.

This is among my top 3 Disney movies ever. I litterally had this entire movie memorized as a child. I could quote it word for word.

Animation 9/10

6:33 Aww Vincent Price-Your Ratigan was such a sophisticated treasure whose charisma was only rivaled by Rescue Rangers Fat Cat! You will be missed!
I bought this VHS for my daughter in the early 90s and we watched it dozens of times as she was growing up. We both loved it then and we both still love it now. Thank you for reviewing this underrated Disney classic!!
I really wished this movie got more appreciation from fans of disney and Disney itself. It’s an excellent portrayal/interpretation of Sherlock and Ratigan is one of Disney’s best villain characters. It’s too bad they didn’t do more with the characters. Imagine if they had a cute chemistry lab at disney land with Basil talking step by step instructions to find a clue or solve a puzzle.
I think it's called The Great Mouse Detective for a reason... it's a great movie! Seriously, this movie is one of the most under appreciated Disney films I've ever seen, and I'm happy to finally see you do a review on it.
So, from the comments I've been reading, it appears that the next classic review is a 1971 animated feature called The Point. I've never heard of this movie before, so I have no idea what it's about or anything like that. Should make for an interesting classic review.
Great means big. Like, The Famous Mouse Detective.
Dude, you scared me like crazy with that opening. Other than that, great job on the review.
Great to see the great Pikachu detective getting some love.
Wait.
Professor Ratigan is on of my top 5 comedic villains in animation.
This movie is #9 on my list of my favorite Animated Disney Movies. Ever since I was a child, I loved The Great Mouse Detective. It's just as Animat said, it's not the case to solve in this movie, it's the journey that is all about fun. And I always have fun watching this movie. For example, I personally see Olivia as my favorite character in this entire movie. Remember, I love child characters, and Olivia is no exception. Her cuteness as a child is what lets me sympathize with her when she loses her father. Don't get me wrong, Basil and Ratigan are great characters too, but Basil starts out quite selfish and its more around the middle that I start seeing his charm and laughing at his comedy. Also, Ratigan does deserve to be recognized as a Disney Villain, and I'm glad Vincent Price enjoyed himself so in his role, but since he's the one who kidnapped Olivia's father, that's more a reason to be mad at him than to like him (but I guess that's the point of a villain, isn't it?) Now, one particular scene that I love remembering is the bar sequence. It makes me think of Western Cowboys, one of my favorite genres in film. Not only does this sequence give me ideas for what a Cowboy saloon can be like, but as far as drunk references go, seeing Dawson get drunk is actually funny. And the battle of Big Ben? That was epic! That was an awesome sequence and I can only assume the animators had plenty of fun doing that. Yes, I would rather watch An American Tale more, but I will still gladly watch this movie for some cartoon fun.
Dammit Animat, it’s a good thing I was distracted when you added that damn scene with Fidget smothering the screen with his fang-toothed red-eyed face at the begining! That was one of my big childhood scares, even more than that donkey transformation scene or Pink Elephants! It doesn’t help that you added it at the end as well.
I remember closing my eyes for that jumpscare.
0:07 Jump scare warning!!!
Sherlock Holmes + Goregous animation + Likeable characters + Unbelievably cinematic claymax = The Great Mouse Detective.
Story: 10/10
Animation: 9/10

Great review on The Great Mouse Detective!
It's a great and fun movie
I feel like not only the film is the reason that we got the Disney Renaissance but The Fox and the Hound as well
Because that movie is the one where it started to have young people come in during the making of the film and those young animators are the people that would create the Disney Renaissance despite a lot of arguments during the production
Looking forward you your review on The Fox and the Hound someday
It's my favorite Disney film😊

That bar dance scene tho.
Ratigan....animated by Glen Keane!!
0:10- It’s funny, this scene has never creeped me out in the past, yet here, it almost made me jump.
When I was about 7-8 this was my favorite movie! It's been about a decade since I last saw it, but I remember how delightful it was. If it saw it again, I would probably love it more today! I also remember that my VHS did not have it's case for some reason.
Honestly my favorite thing about this movie is definitely Basil. He's so goddamn expressive and fluidly animated, his character design and movement made me grin each time I saw him on screen. But I also adore his personality, it's quite rare to see an early Disney's movie protagnist being such a dick it's honestly incredible. I love seeing his eccentric personality, witty actions and arogant behavior, he's a great foil to Watson and Olivia, that's why their relationship is do great. And god, his chemistry with Ratigan are just iconic, they are both such extra drama queens, I love them. They feel like ex-lovers who despise each other yet can't help but tease eachother because of their history, it's so funny. Basil is probably my favorite Disney protagonist and his relationship with the villain might also be my favorite need to think about that some more tho. Yeah, a very underrated movie indeed.
If I can be honest, I truly love and admire this Disney film in my childhood and I added this in one of my Top 10 Best Disney Animated Films list. I will admit whenever Fidget does show his scary face on screen he does scare the hell of me! I got some goosebumps in my skin!
Anyways, since I love talking animated mice films like The Great Mouse Detective and The Rescuers Down Under I came up my own idea and concept of talking mice and rats but this time bring back 2d hand drawn animation.
Fun fact every major character in this film was 50+ when it was made except for Ms Flabersham who was 9 at time of release.
I believe if I recall correctly in the UK I think it’s just called Basil The Great Mouse Detective, That’s it.

black heart19 What does any of that have to do with what I said?
Underrated Classic!
Out of all the Disney films to get sequels, why didn't THIS!? This one actually has more to tell due to a cliffhanger.
It DESERVED a sequel. Unfortunately, with the deaths of Barrie Ingham and Val Bettin, who voiced Basil and Dawson, respectively, it remains to be seen if a sequel will ever be made.
Definitely one of their most underrated ones. For my money though (potentially-controversial opinion alert) this is actually one of the few Disney classics that hasn't gotten a sequel, but totally could use one! I'm serious! Make a sequel to it with the same scale as the Rescuers Down Under, and make it a parallel to the Hound of the Baskervilles, and maybe even give it a theatrical release! Sure it's not the biggest name, but it's very much an ideal one that I would chose if I had to think of a sequel to make!
you used the worlds greatest criminal mind as you background music (lov dat)
Next classic review: The Point (1971)!
A round boy in an Edgy world? I've honestly never heard that before
An edgy version of Kirby?
Jordan Fazende I thought and was thinking of Peanuts.
My ALL TIME FAVORITE DISNEY ANIMATED FILM which I own on Bluray
Darn. If hardly seen anything of this film, but now I'm gonna need to.
Not only is this animation slide really cool, but when something like that is used in a movie, it can be worth a good amount of money. Something tells me you wouldn’t sell it though and I don’t blame you at all. That is a real one of a kind piece of Disney memorabilia
Fidget's first appearance scared the living shit out of me as a kid, that and Ratigan going mad with rage towards the end of the film didn't help at the time. But besides that, it's one of my favorite Disney movie! Great review @AniMat. BTW I saw that cell with Nicodemus from The Secret of NIMH next to Ratigan behind you.
To AniMat, to Animat ...

@@scoutart1508 Yeah. But as much as he's one of my animation heroes, one thing that upsets me was his review and thoughts on "Sgt Stubby: An American Hero." I think he was a bit harsh on that film because I loved it and made it my #1 favorite animated film of 2018. But I still love him either way.
@@scoutart1508 One more thing. That first comment I posted before you replied, you know it was something I came up with that's similar to Ratigan's song. Right? Just a little fact.
I love this movie. It's one of my favourites and they've captured Sherlock Holmes vibes very well here. well someone in the department knows about the famous bomb under the table.

I love that movie!
I was born in 1992 and this was a movie I CONSTANTLY rented from Hollywood video i loved it so much. It always made me sad no one else seemed to know of it even to this day. I still love it to peices.
The Great Mouse Detective is such an under the radar gem. This film had great and charming characters, and is one of the few times that you like a character for his intelligent. In a sense, this is one of the most intelligent Disney Animated films. Another thing to mention about the animation is that this film along with Black Cauldron improved the Xerography process by using the Animation Photo Transfer, which takes a drawing, then uses the negative to transfer to a cel, but instead of a sketchy black line, it uses a clean black line. The Black Cauldron uses color tones to the Xerox lines to give it a classic look. Great Mouse Detective instead decided to keep the black ink lines because not only does it save money, but it matches the environment of the backgrounds like they did with 101 Dalmatians. But thankfully with the APT process, the black lines look more solid and less sketchy.
If there's going to be a live action version of The Great Mouse Detective, which is more likely, they'd cast Johnny Depp as Basil of Baker Street, James McAvoy as Ratigan, and Mark Hamill as Fidget.
Me at 0:07 and 16:31 - "JESUS CHRIST!!!!" And yes, I meant that in the manner of King Arthur in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". Also, on one hand, I can see why you didn't talk about the songs because there were only three of them, but on the other hand, I'm shocked you didn't talk about "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind"!
I'm surprised he didn't talk about the songs, even if there aren't a lot of them.
Fun Fact: originally Peter Cook and Michael Palin were considered for the role of Basil and also Patrick Macnee was considered for the voice of Dawson.
John Cleese was also considered to voice Basil.

The Great Mouse Detective >>> Anything Sherlock related in the last 20 years.
Ratigan is up there with Scar, Ursula, Jafar
So basically, this movie is for Disney what Road to El Dorado is for Dreamworks.
The next Classic Review after the upcoming one will be the 100th, are you planning to do anything special?
MagicalRanter224 Maybe something most extravagant.
This was my favorite growing up and I still love it to day. As for next times classic review, I think we'll get The Point soon.
I know this one! The next movie is The Point.
Harry Nilsson music gave it away for me.

I love this movie. I've never watched it until I was 19 because I never believed in it, and oh boy was I wrong about it
Yes underrated! Among fa aspects beside the CGI: inventively sophisticated period tech in Basil's lab, the Queen 'animorph', and Ratigan's gramophone(78 record)- triggered lethal setup Basil and Dawson.
Animat should do a classic review of space chimps and give it the beating it deserves.
Luigi Marinus Vlogs which one?
The first movie is bad, but it’s at least watchable in my opinion. The sequel on the other hand..... it’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.
Daniel Attrell space chimps is my guilty pleasure, I’ve never seen the sequel and I don’t plan on it either.
@@danielattrell as of 2020 I rewatched space chimps and my opinion has changed, I hate that movie
I couldn't really think what to get out of this description. "round boy in an edge world" It could be anything! Jimmy Neutron, Doug 1st, Hey Arnold, Anything!
This was actually the first animated Disney film I saw in theaters at four years old.
Oh boy! IT'S HERE!
Now, here is a good theory, Are 'The Rescuers' and 'The Great Mouse Detective' set in the same universe?
Personally I'd rather have a prequel than a sequel, maybe one about some of the crimes Ratigan mentioned having committed in his villain song, or maybe a story that more emphasizes the mystery aspect (making that 'the clues are in' tagline more justified). I also wonder if every human in that world also has a mouse-world equivalent.
I'm gonna miss John Musker from his career. He deserved better along with his partner Ron Clements. They deserved better.
Katie Mealey agreed.
The Point is next
Some of the other names of this movie, depending on the country, are Basil the Great Mouse Detective, or The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective.
Honestly one of my favourite Disney films
