In part one of this project, I removed my mantel so I could cut it shorter for a better television height and demo’d the tile on the fireplace surround and hearth. I realized my substrates were in pretty rough condition, so I replaced the drywall and prepped the floor with cement board. To see more of the that process, see below.

For this project I installed a marble tile in a mesh-backed herringbone pattern on the surround, and 3x6 individual subway tiles on the hearth. As a quick note, I’ll say that the herringbone pattern was not the easiest to cut and install-it takes precision to cut the small pieces and keep the pattern aligned, and I definitely made my fair share of mistakes. Having said all that, I love how it looks, and I’m still glad I chose it.

1. Prep the materials and layout
2. Mix the mortar
3. Spread and comb the mortar
4. Lay the hearth tile
5. Cut the tiles
6. Lay the first surround tile sheets
7. Cut the hearth tiles
8. Grout the tile
9. Clean the Tiles

Enjoy her narration, however; it would be nice to see more of the actual work performed.
It's always the case. She just want to put content to generate revenu. She doesn't care if it's incomplete and sometimes useless for DIY

I took a chance and built the wall prior to receiving the unit which arrived sooner than expected and it fit right in the space I constructed. The heat output is perfect for the space we needed and made the room exactly how we envisioned it to turn out. I am happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability. I will add that the premixed mortar I usually use states that it should only be installed in areas that will be less than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. So another vote for mixing it up.

Wow fireplace looks so awesome..Can I put the same tile over my brick fireplace? Not sure if prolite thinset will hold the tile. Please advise.

Looks nice, where the tile meets the bottom of the fire box looks a little sloppy, mortar on firebox frame.
Can you put tile over Bedford stone on the front of the fireplace or do you need to take the stone off?
What kind of mortar do you use for high heat areas?

At 7:20 there is a triangular piece that is missing tile at the top; how did you correct for that?
Might be a dumb question but with the herring bone tile, how did you make sure you had the smaller pieces for the random gaps?
The black strips you used to hold the tile in…why are they used? I have heat tape there now but I think it needs to be removed.

Is it just me, or does everyone have these tile saws set waaaaay too high. Shouldn't it be set lower to protect your fingers? Setting it lower also gives the tile a more vertical cut, instead of angled cut of the blade, which would be useful if you want to notch out part of the tile instead of cutting all the way through it.
I agree. Cutting tile is easier and safer if the blade is set to a deep plunge. Otherwise the blade pulls the tile pretty badly.
How to tile vs. how to talk about DIY? How about some drop cloth to protect the floor?
