In this video I build, paint and install a fireplace mantel. I show my various methods for building the structure. Then I dig deep into how I cut and install the various moldings, and I give a behind the scenes look at my spray finishing process. I also show a few of my favorite router bits and where I use them. Hopefully you enjoy the video.

I used to watch the New Yankee Workshop as a kid to marvel at Norm’s technique, shop, and tools. Mike, I think you may be the 21st century Norm Abrams.
Thank you. That is the best compliment I can receive. I grew up watching Norm as well.
Norm taught me what i know too. Loved the NYW
@@chriswebb810 He's a great teacher.
I used to love that program.
@@johngunning2123 It taught me everything I know about watching other people have really cool tools! lol
"I've never needed to do that either"...Love it, and the mantle is absolutely stunning! Love watching you work sir!
Ha! Thank you.
And the 2020 Award for Best Deadpan Humor in a Woodworking Video goes to..... Mike Farrington!!!!! Congrats man, I always get a chuckle out of your videos.
Ha! Thank you.
I do appreciate a carpenter whose every cut is right first time. ;)
Thank you.
I've been a carpenter for 20 + years starting out rough framing and made my way into trim and I'm here to tell you that you're the best I've ever seen do it just saw one of you're videos today and plan on watching the rest , I will be a forever subscriber! Very Very nice work
Thank you. Coming from a fellow pro, that is great to hear.
I’ve missed listening to your hypnotic narration... great video as always, hope you and the family are doing ok. 👍👏
Thank you.
Grandma was right - it DOES look smart! Great work, as always. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you.
This gentleman is not only a great craftsman but a stand-up guy. I bought a double taper disc from him and had some issues with UPS. He ironed that out right away.
Thank you James.
God, it's so refreshing to meet a guy who also never makes mistakes! I was starting to think I was the only one. Fantastic, as always.
Ha! Thank you. We are few and far between.
😂My dad says, "I've only ever made one mistake. It was that time when I thought I had made a mistake but then I realized I hadn't." 😁
THAT. . . is, once again, SUPERB WORK!!!!!!!
Thank you Mark.
wow, you have everything in your workshop. im impressed!
Always something amazing when Mike drops a new video. Thanks for taking the time to make us all smart(er).
Thank you very much.
You sir are a craftsman of the highest quality thank you 😊
Wow, thank you!
Who knew building a fireplace mantel could be so entertaining! Looks beautiful! Welcome back, we missed you!
Thank you. Great to be back.
it's good to see someone who doesn't demonise the use of biscuits and pocket screws.
Both are important for millwork projects.
Great job! Years ago when I was a trim carpenter mantels and staircase were my specialty.
Thank you. Both are fun to do.
Very nice job, your shop assistant is very cute, must take after her mother.
Ha! She does. I laughed out loud when I read this. Great comment.
Another great project perfectly executed. The size, spacing, proportions, and fit of the moldings really work to give the project the look of an old master! You're getting the hang of this woodworking game. Mackintosh would approve.
Thank you. Funny you should mention Mackintosh, who happens to be one of my very favorites, I am considering building a small table based on one of his designs.
Thank you for the detail on the mountain spring water versus the desert oasis water when thinning paint. That cleared up a lot for me
Good to hear. Ha!
Used your video to inspire me to build my first mantle. Your pro tips and router bits very helpful . Thank you
Great looking San Diego style mantel. I worked for my dad's stair company in North County in the 80s and early 90s. We built nearly identical mantels for every 3rd or 4th project. Although, back then they would be solid oak 75% of the time. They are definitely fun to make.
Same here, I have probably done 50 just like this one. From Chula Vista to sound Orange County.
I think I speak for everyone when I say: You're a badass. Love the Zelda shirt.
Thank you. Zelda was one of my favorite games. Brought back memories when I saw the shirt on the rack.
Nice project. I like the Naplean Dynamite reference.
Thanks!
Wow I wish I know a professional master carpenter like you. This is my idea of perfection which rarely exists in the UK
Wow, thanks
Can’t wait to see the rest of the build! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Great video. So glad I found your channel !
Thank you.
COOL !!!
Awesome job
Thanks guys.
You sir, are the Jedi Master of moulding! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you. That is a great compliment to receive.
Stunning. This will be an invaluable resources in about two months when I tackle my first commissioned mantle.
Thank you. Good luck. Keep me updated on how it goes.
would love to see an after pic when the stack stone is installed.
Me too. Who knows when all that will be done. I maybe be doing some more work for the same customer, if that's the case then I'll snap a pic.
More likely “for the other contractors to come mess up my work” in my experience haha!
Ha! I didn't want to say that.
Ahh a Mike Farrington video. I am at peace in this chaotic world. Awesome video, as usual
Thank you very much.
Great build, Mike. I always like the way you can take a fussy build and simplify it for us along with adding your humor. Take good care of the little ones.
Bill
Thank you. Will do.
“While their name implies they’re worth nothing, their number one in my heart” 🤣
Ha!
losing Eddie really hurt, at least he made peace with Dave and Michael before going. Its a shame we wont get that tour they were working on with dave and mike rejoining.
Yup, total downer, may he Rest In Peace.
Hi Mike- nice- can't get enough these projects- I learn something new every time!
Thank you.
Crisp and sharp clean lines and edges in your designs produce a classic and handsome mantel that is understated yet timeless. Good work as always.
Thank you very much.
Its ok if you’re into that perfection thing.
Ha! Thank you.
It really should have been "The Shop Apprincess". Missed opportunity there.
I thought he did say that??
Yup, that's what I tried to say.
@@MikeFarrington Yeah, I caught that later when you actually said it. LOL
Nice work, btw! Looks great!
@@dgoddard Thank you.
Just discovered your channel yesterday and I've already picked up so many useful tips and lessons as well as providing me a great deal of entertainment - thank you
Great to hear!
Always a treat when a new vid appears. Excellent work and adorable apprentice!
Thank you very much.
"I'm mike farrington and welcome to my shop, AKA The Board Room", I missed that at the beginning.
Seriously....you're slipping Farrington.
Ha! Sorry about that. I get that sorted for next video.
Honestly thought you’d go with “Miter Clamp” for the heavy metal band name there.
Ha! Maybe that will be the title of our first album.
really appreciate all the projects you have done... technics are essential addition and very useful to anybody's arsenal who loves woodworking... well done Cabinet Czar...!!!
Thank you very much.
You seem like your do your work and do it at a high level too!
Beautiful project and video. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you. I don't know what level I'm at, but I do enjoy my work.
0:50 i think somebody has a clamping problem. You know, the 1st step is admitting to yourself, your addicted to clamps
Yes, I do have a problem...
If I ever start a metal band its going to be called "Guillotine Discharge"
Ha! I'll open for you.
Well done. It is a pleasure to watch you work. Thanks!
Thank you Jerry.
Absolutely beautiful work. Love the care to detail and your shop set up is on point! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Nice! How much would one of these cost?
Thank you. I don't talk price in the UA-cam comments section, it wouldn't be fair to the customer. If you would like a bid, send me an email via my website.
0:55... needs more clamps
Ha! You can never have enough clamps.
beautiful job and I really like the French cleat attachment. clean and simple
Thank you.
Very smart, our grandmother must have been friends. Glad to see you videoing your work, always take a minute and play with your children, they grow up to fast, later.
Ha! Thank you, will do.
Wow!!!’ This is gorgeous. You did an amazing job!
I hope the shop apprentice is well. Nice to see the new shop apprentice princess 👍😎
Thank you. They are both doing well.
Great build! Incredible craftsmanship. Even better narration.
Thank you very much!
I built a fireplace mantle for electric fireplace and tv enclosure based on your Video! awesome work Mike,!! My family loves it!
That is awesome!
I really ❤️ your carpenter work, and your calming voice...

man! i love watching your videos and how you explain everything in detail and having the kids in the videos too makes me smile, keep it up!!! from Australia
Glad you like them!
Great to see you back. Very nice project, and like always, I learned a trick or two. Thanks.
Thanks Chuck.
Awesome work Mike, the sarcasm travels beautifully across the pond 👌👍
Ha! Thank you.
Excellent work, Mike. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you.
Always a good day when a new Mike Farmington video comes out!
Thank you.
Holy cow, that flush trim bit is awesome. Now I gotta get one! Good to see you back in action.
Thank you. Its a useful bit for sure.
Here I am about to build a mantel and now this video. Thanks Mike.
Thank you. Good luck with your build.
A appreciate your precision and quality of your work, and wish I had a shop like this.
Thank you very much!
Ooh, a new Mike Farrington video! Forget everything else on my 'Watch Later' list for 22 minutes... 😃
Thank you very much.
One reason I love your channel is because it's the perfect mix of OCD and sarcasm, just like me. I really need one of those v-groove flush trim bits *SANTA*.
Thank you. The v groove bits are really cool.
Looks awesome!!! I love seeing your work Mike.
Thank you.
How did i not know such a router bit existed !! Thanks
Its a good one to add to the collection.
Always enjoy your videos and watching you work. Listening to Todd Rundgren - Bang the drum all day.
Thank you.
Gorgeous fireplace!!The sanding disc was just epic! Wish I would have one.
Thank you.
Your craftsmanship is amazing.
Thank you.
Your precision is divine ! Stunning.
Thank you.
There are two shows I get excited about when I see a new one pop up...This Old House and Mike Farrington! Thanks for the video (s) !
Thats the highest compliment I could receive.
I'll watch anything with Tom Silva in it!
Thanks for the tip about a flush trim V groove bit. In the past, I have used a 1/16" router bit to create a shadow line on a seam for the same purpose. Way too tedious.
Lots of other great tips, like the shoes on the mantle. BTW, so glad to hear that you never make a measure/cut mistake! 😮
Thank you. Yes, the V groove bit is a neat one.
Nice timing. Tomorrow I’m installing a very simple mantle in my granddaughter’s apartment. Nothing as grand as this but still fun.
I aspire to one day doing work like this😀
Thank you, good luck.
As usual, nicely done 👌
It strays from my usual way of mantle building but in the end I picked up a few new tricks ...
Thank you very much.
Wow Mike!!! Once again you have shared a wonderful video. I am especially thankful for the lesson you shared on spray finish. I really needed to see that aspect of the build. Thanks so much for your your great teaching I truly appreciate all you do.
Thank you. Great to hear you like the spray finish part. I almost cut that out.
@@MikeFarrington I’m so glad you didn’t.. there’s not a lot of good information on spraying paint finishes..Most people like to show the build aspect but the finishing part is what makes the peace and most people never show that so I’m so happy you did
@@gregroberts875 I have wanted to do a video on spray finishing, but I just haven't had the time. Honestly, I have yet to see any one really do a good video on the subject.
Nicely done. Your humor is as good as your craftsmenship!
Thank you.
Finally someone else who also makes perfect cuts the first time every time! 😂😉
You and me both.
Thanks Mike, beautiful work as usual. I have to replace our mantel and surround and I will probably try to duplicate something very close to what you just did. Happy & Healthy Holidays to your and your family!!
Thank you. Same to you.
that pro tip about the v groove flush trim bit.. i can't wait to use that!
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful work! A very nice project.
Thank you Bill.
That’s beautiful work. Thanks for the video 👍 🔨
Glad to see a new video from you! Keep up the good work!
Thank you.
And the main man is back. Don’t leave it so long next time Mike. Another master class from the woodworking messiah. Great work pal 👍🏻
Thank you very much. I'll try to be around more.
Mike, you are the "Biscuit Samurai"! keep up the good work.
I like that, thank you.
Dude, I really enjoyed watching your video. I'm a smoothe jazz musician and my music teacher reccomended I watch interviews of many other musicians to learn from them. the reason I especially appreciated your video is because you let us know that we lost eddie van Halen. I really enjoyed his interviews. Your mantle video is a huge help to this wood working novice.
JD Jones Toledo ohio 🙂👍
That's awesome!
Beautiful job Mike, and the shop Aprincess is beautiful too !
Thank you.
Just beautiful, just beautiful!
Thank you.
I used to work at a winery (for fun) and said if I ever started a band I would call it "Crushing Merlot". Nice work!
Crushing Merlot, great band name. Ha!
Great presentation of your skill. Loved it all.
Thank you.
Fantastic build and video. Been looking for a mantle build and one from one of my favorite UA-cam carpenters was just icing on the cake. Stop making me wait for your next video and get on it!
Thank you. I'll try to get more videos out.
Yup, always enjoy following along. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Love the tip about using a v-groove router bit on MDF butt joints.
That is a cool tip for sure.
Fantastic job. Great detail work. I think I need a separate video just on how to figure out, set up and cut those perfectly fit compound miter cuts. I always learn something from your videos. Very nice shop apprentice.
Thank you. I will be doing a crown molding video soon.
Wow! You are so smart. I wish I could learn what you do. Looks like a lot of fun.
Thank you 🤗
Details are FLAWLESS !!!!!
Thank you.
Nice build. I really enjoy all the moldings as well. I always said moldings is an art mort than skill. Keep putting out these videos Norm. I mean Mike!
Thank you. To have my name mentioned in the same sentence as Norm is a high compliment.
You are awesome dude. It’s rare to see someone that really knows what’s he is doing.
That mantle is perfect!!
Thank you very much.
