A question, why do you use both motar and glue on the black metal part? That is a great video
The quick dry adhesive helps hold the tile in place while the mortar sets up. After a great deal of research, I found this to be common practice in fireplace surround installation. Some installers just use the glue, but I wanted both. Hope this helps and good luck with your project!!

I made a faux fireplace but would like to add tile. Should I attach plywood or something to the inside to put the tile on similar to what you did?
Absolutely! Try Lock Tite tile adhesive.

Wen Chen It’s a basic square foot calculation. I always add 15-20% for waste to be sure I have enough tile.
How did you finish the inside edges of the tile surround?
I also wondered this, and I think they just covered it up with the mantel. Comparing 7:53 to 8:08, the tile extends more than 2 long tile lengths beyond the edge of the fireplace opening, and with the mantel, we can see about 1.5 long tile lengths, so it would not be possible to see the edge of the tile.
What is the style name of the fireplace surround/mantel? where can I purchase one?
Well, it started out as a builder style Federalist mantle. I covered the fluting with a thin piece of plywood and removed the dental moulding. I don’t live in a federalist style house so those details were ones I wanted to remove.

Did you trim the edges of your tile before re-applying the mantle?
Only on the outside to make it even with the sides of the fireplace. I left the tiles that extended behind the mantle that would be covered by the mantle. No one can see it and it just made faster work. :)
